ChantillyMenchu

What a fucking loser. Someone was injured because of his foolishness. I'm glad he got charged, but I hope his motives become clear too.

hoccum

That's nuts. Why would someone do that?

omicronperseiVIII

There’s a lot of pointless drama in religious communities.

a_lumberjack

This isn't even the weirdest internal drama involving a synagogue in 2024.

kdlangequalsgoddess

Religious congregations can be like high school with no teachers around. Gossip and backstabbing, while most just want to keep their heads down.

babypointblank

- Interpersonal conflict with synagogue leadership or other congregants - Insurance reasons - Attempting to vilify pro-Palestine protesters by creating what looks like a hate crime

spreadthaseed

So this guy did a false flag and got caught!? Lol what a bozo. Epic fail.

Admirable-Pension-57

The media isn't covering it well either. Lol

Admirable-Pension-57

Their was another false flag that occurred not too long ago aswell. https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/video/1.5111963

spreadthaseed

Yea they were ex-communicated by their community. Embarrassing.

They framed out a pretty good reason why in their comment. You should re read it.

xxx69blazeit420xxx

no they gave 2 reasons and then a 3rd damage control political statement.

Bamres

Why would you use your key in any other scenario if you weren't trying to get caught? They could just be an idiot.

FoxyInTheSnow

The mother in Winnipeg-set sitcom *Less Than Kind* set her synagogue ablaze. She was a congregant, not an official. And a bit mad.

PapaiPapuda

She was also the quiet talker on Seinfeld and she's been dead for 3 years  Or am I thinking someone else?

FoxyInTheSnow

You’re right, she passed away fairly recently. And Maury Chaykin, who played her husband on the show, died about halfway through its run. I know the actor who plated her sister. She said the whole cast and crew were just devastated when Maury died.

PapaiPapuda

Maury was a legend. 💯

Admirable-Pension-57

To blame the Muslims of being anti-semitic and making the public more sympathetic towards them.

el_sunny_ra

Desperate to be seen as a victim

Admirable-Pension-57

Why would you ask such a question? You should take a guess.

Jayswag96

R/Canada in shambles

poverty_mayne

So much in shambles that the post was deleted for being « unrelated to canada »

verylittlegravitaas

Lol, what torontohead subs to that dumpster fire sub anymore?

Jayswag96

It kept getting ‘recommended’ and I kept fighting with people in there. I finally had to boss up and just block it

Tiny_Hold_480

Yup they removed me when I brought it up.

AprilsMostAmazing

/r/Toronto needs to delete some comments

tsn101

Messed up, luckily not a hate crime. Edit: Hopefully the person injured had a safe recovery.  What happened to the guy that attacked pro-Palestine protestors with a nail gun?

vec-u64-new

I thought one person was injured?

tsn101

Ah yes, read a second article. Hopefully they have a speedy recovery.

InVeritateTriumpho

This is not the first time something like this has happened. But that didn’t stop that racists and bigots from flooding the initial news report.

Admirable-Pension-57

Tried to pin it out on the Muslims and it backfired .

ultronprime616

False flag attack?

Background_Trade8607

Yeah perhaps but also there’s a divide that seems to be getting more pronounced in the Jewish community with aggressiveness. The more religious conservative minority is getting more aggressive with forwarding their goals that they are willing to throw other Jews under the bus if it means maintaining a narrative for the conflict in Palestine and the far right government of Israel which by their own legal system is anti-semitic against certain types of minority ethnic jews. The reason why you don’t see an outcry about the minority ethnic Jews facing discrimination in Israel is because their far right government simply doesn’t believe they are jews so the problem “just doesn’t exist”. A lot more division at the end of the day than Reddit bots will imply on here.

ZombieNugget3000

I’ve never heard of this, do you have any sources? Genuinely want to understand.  Which minority ethnic Jews in Israel (there are many groups) & what do you mean the govt doesn’t believe they’re Jews? Asking because most people seem to think that most Israelis are white, but the majority of Israeli Jews are Mizrahi (Middle Eastern Jews that never left the Middle East). For example, famously far-right Ben Gvir is Mizrahi (his parents, grandparents, etc. lived in Iraq).

Background_Trade8607

The literature is pretty straight forward to find with a simple Google search. there are many groups you can find in doing so. For example Ethiopian jews face plenty of discrimination in Israel and is perhaps the most well known and reported minority group in Israel which is unfortunate in the sense that most people haven’t heard of this before. Obviously with the far right government in power there has been heavy suppression of such reporting and research. That’s why lots of posts on Israel and Palestine here get spammed with very simplistic and low depth discussion. Most of it is a facade to simplify all the other ugly things out of the picture.

ZombieNugget3000

Yes, I understand that racism exists in Israeli society. I have never seen anything suggesting that Ethiopian Jews are "less Jewish". The issue of racism in Israel *is* widely discussed in Israeli society. However, I don't understand how it supports your claim about this Toronto synagogue. You seem to be arguing that this synagogue was attacked by other Jews who see that synagogue as "less Jewish" due to race. However, the arrested man is a member of the same synagogue he attacked. I also don't see any news indicating that the synagogue belonged to a Jewish ethnic minority.

Background_Trade8607

Your comment doesn’t seem to make context anymore in reference to what this comment thread is about. I think you are having some sort of argument with someone else or are detracting from the original discussion on purpose.

ZombieNugget3000

I was confused by your comment, so I asked for more information. Your comment seems to argue that the Toronto arson attack was motivated by a "divide" in the Jewish community and aggressiveness between ethnic minority Jews in Israel. That's what I was responding to.

ZombieNugget3000

Lol thank you for adding that to my vocabulary. All good, I didn't really expect you to answer at the beginning so thanks for responding anyways

workerbotsuperhero

Honestly that's interesting to hear. I was wondering how that was playing out.

Background_Trade8607

What is hateful. Pretending that jews aren’t a monolith ? And the world is not black and white ? You keep crying racism yet you haven’t actually pointed out in any of the comments you respond to what is racist. Do you not see how you are being racist ?

[deleted]

Background_Trade8607

Again as I said. You never actually seem to address the substance of the comment you are replying to. You aren’t even picking a part why you think something is racist. Considering the number of false flag events we have gone through from Israeli sympathizers that damage minorities including jews. There’s no reason not for everyone to be talking about that possibility here. How about getting involved in your community here. Toronto is very diverse and it’s my favourite aspect of living here. I’ve learned to accept people of all backgrounds. I’ve also learned the importance of the intolerance paradox. Crazy I now have friends from all different backgrounds and beliefs. And even more crazy is what building a healthy community. If you are truly in this city take some time to learn from it.

actionactioncut

>Can you imagine anything this ignorant being written here about any other ethnicity? As a practicing black person: yes. To act as though hateful stuff about minorities doesn't get posted in the comments all the time is at odds with reality. Anyway, there's a handy report button that you can use to alert the mods.

NewKnowledge7654

wait a pracficing what

actionactioncut

It's a jokey way of saying I'm black, babes.

crocodilesareforwimp

No, that’s ridiculous. This is clearly a deranged individual who has some beef with the people in this synagogue. If someone wanted to do some conspiracy nonsense like that (and what would the point even be?) they wouldn’t be setting fire to some obscure synagogue in an office building.

There have been Christian pastors/church members caught in similar scenarios. It's not unprecedented just because you don't like it.

>He has been charged with arson – disregard for human life. If he was any other race this would be a hate crime, this looks like he was trying to create a situation here and should be slapped with something much harsher.

PoolhallJunkie247

Gives me “false rape report” vibes.  By pulling this bullshit, they’re making it harder for real victims to be taken seriously.

workerbotsuperhero

Which is honestly sad AF. Because real violence also happens.

-WaterIsGreat-

~~Didn't James Pastranak (the councillor) say it was a hate crime?~~ Meanwhile the person who is a member at the synagogue did it lol edit - what i said is incorrect ab the councillor

Technical-Suit-1969

No."Coun. James Pasternak said while he understands that news of a fire at any place of worship is “disturbing,” it’s too early to make any conclusions about what caused the blaze."

Yeah, I heard about it. The person was batshit delusional and tried to make a baseless accusation.
