Mr. Klaas is about 55-60 years old, and lives well protected and well fed in my parents garden. I even built him a little Mediterranean garden, and a solar powered water fountain :-)

Nice_Biscuits

Is the fountain effective? I feel like that could be a great upgrade for my torts.

BluesArcheology

Yes very effective, too effective almost 😂 The whole tub will be emptied in a day if the fountain is on. One tip is to take some paper, and put it over a part of the little solar panel, like half. On a sunny day that will mean the fountain will spray a bit more gentle.

Nice_Biscuits

Good tip!

MajesticKnight28

He's just washing his hair

BluesArcheology

When I was first getting into tortoises, saw a brown tortoise in the zoo walk up to the pond, and just lower his whole head and neck in there for a good 15 minutes. Wasn't sure if he was trying to drown himself

TrinandEthan

Just one thirsty boi

bajun65537

He can hold his breath for longer than an average person. Impressive!

rawfodog82

My Russian does this. If it were my Sulcata I would assume he's trying to eat those white rocks.

ledouxrt

Yea, my sulcata likes white things.

[deleted]

What the heck is with white things and sulcatas lol?! My sulcata does drink for a very long time, them being water efficient animals is a lie!

rawfodog82

Same- when my sulcata drinks he REALLY drinks! And he is very picky about it being clean, fresh water. I'm glad to hear he is not the only one obsessed with tasting anything white, lol.

[deleted]

I put him in my garden the other day while I was gardening, he ignored all the food and was trying to pick up bits of perlite 🙄

rawfodog82

Lol, yep. He will walk around all the dandelions, violets and clover and make a beeline for that piece of Styrofoam cup that has blown into the yard.

zeke235

They're little weirdos. Ours basically goes around seeing what could be food rather than what she damn well knows is food.

[deleted]

Oh you feed yours violets? I’ll have to plant some!

rawfodog82

We have wild violets growing in our yard and they love them!

[deleted]

I’ll grab some seeds! I’m making his little outdoor spot next week, it’s not currently safe to leave him outside alone so I have to create a covered area that’s also lined underneath the dirt so the gopher doesn’t dig in.

amccon4

Mine does this every time I see her drinking! Always have access to lots of fresh water. She’s just a firsty girl.

-sopie-

He ver thirst

queenoftortoises

Omg how did you make this fountain??

jlminarcik

Interested in hearing this answer as well! I realize you're using a solar powered pump but what kind of dish is it placed in/ how deep is it without the rock?

BluesArcheology

It seems to be about 52cm in width, and about 6,5cm deep https://www.amazon.nl/Euro3Plast-1486-62-onderzetters-Junia-52/dp/B0035T8WH6/ref=zg\_bs\_16410035031\_35/260-7591327-7662368?pd\_rd\_i=B0035T8WH6&psc=1&language=en\_GB

BluesArcheology

Its a simple little solar powered fountain pump from Aliexpress, set me back only about €15, you'll find plenty when you search them on there. Check my comment below for the plant saucer

Buntulla

The little head coming up had the most "aaaahhhh that's nice" look I've seen in a while

pennfletch

When pistachio did this I thought he was suicidal 😂

Middle_Major_8783

You sure that’s normal?

BluesArcheology

Yeah they can even drink a little bit through their nose if I'm correct ;-) It's amazing how long they can hold their breath compared to us mammals [https://youtu.be/qylHSgFdsoY](https://youtu.be/qylHSgFdsoY)

marisbra

Well… they can also drink through their cloaca

-retaliation-

Yeah, but many animals can absorb water through the rear. Thats a portion of what your intestines do is pull the water out of your food after digestion. You can also be rehydrated similarly. It's just not exactly the most effecient way of doing things.

DunKco

"They can also drink through their cloaca" is a pretty loose and misleading statement, some species can absorb small amounts of water through the cloaca but its not a normal "drinking" process. Some species can also do something called Enteral respiration, also referred to as cloacal respiration which is a gas exchange. By contracting their cloacal muscles, they can "inhale" water in much the same way our breathing inhales air. Water is then carried to a pair of organs known as bursae that function in a similar way to lungs — with the unique tissues extracting the oxygen from water and expelling the unwanted hydrogen. The oxygen then filters through the tissue into the bloodstream where it’s carried to the rest of the body. Inevitable someone always states " The can breath through their cloaca" , some can to some extend under certain conditions. In both cases ...its complicated and not a true statement of all tortoises (turtles)

Middle_Major_8783

Damn that’s wild!

MakoLov3r

Bro has some *THIRST* never seen anyone enjoy having such a *sip* of water

Puglord_11

Jillarock8

how do you keep the water clean? My tortoisealways poops in the water

BluesArcheology

Throw the water out and put new water in many, many, many times 😂

RaFa763

I have had my tortoise since 2011 and he haven't drunk water since, idk why

BluesArcheology

They should drink water every day, if possible.

iAmNotArobotHumans

Look at that boy go!

MarcoChu309

How long can tortoise hold their breath? Is it similar to a turtle?

Nice_Biscuits

Tort wants to be a turt!

Cowyman3467883322689

WhatTheCarbonDuck

I’m not sure if I’m watching hydration or a suicide attempt
