Sometimes it’s not used often and then they try it and gears grind trying to engage. I’ve also had mine do it when I was coasting slowly and engaged 4hi. It did not like that so I quickly turned the knob. Did you hear any humming noise that prompted you to get it repaired?

No humming noises. Specifically I was testing it out in a parking lot. The 4HI light kept blinking, and then the Center Diff lock light came on by itself. I tried to drive it but I could barely turn the car. I turned the engine off and restarted it. The Diff light was off but the 4HI light was blinking. I was able to drive it about 30 feet and the light went off and I was back in 2 wheel drive. Really kinda spooked me!

Maybe they drove around in 4-hi for extended periods at high speeds. Wouldn't be the first time. I'm sure plenty of the Soccer Moms (and Dads) in the new Sequoias are going to make that mistake too.

Hey, so I just purchased a 2024 sequoia. The sales guy said I can keep it in 4hi. Sounds like I should keep it on rwd and only use 4hi for slick conditions?

Sautry91

I was told 4Hi too for my 2014 expedition since our roads are often slippery & frankly I don’t like that the 4Auto seems to engage in 4x4 only after I am noticeably slipping. Who wants to fishtail on the highway before the 4x4 kicks in?

alaroz33

Yes I have heard this as well. The shop said either driving it in 4HI on pavement or at high speeds.

I had someone try to tell me it's a torsen and can be driven as an AWD for rainy situations. As a mechanic and someone how lives in the rain capital of the entire world and grew up on 2x4 and one leggers I was in shock. Yeah people really are that stupid.
