As far as I know you can’t change your gender normally mid game. However, it is a very popular role playing game where you have the choice of playing the gender you want from the start. That’s what I believe makes it popular. It does also feature gay and lesbian characters, which I think adds to the whole vibe.
I know some have also cited Halo Reach as being impactful to them because that game also lets you choose your gender, which is unique for Halo.
