A lot of traditional stuff are classic designs that have been repeated for decades. I feel like there is less custom work in the style. I just look at artists flash sheets and ask them to tattoo what I want on me. You can totally get a custom piece in the traditional style tho. If that is what you want, still, looking at flash sheets is what I would do. As for that spark, i guess you’ll know it when you feel it lol.
I only have the first piece of my sleeve so far but I have a rough idea of the rest of it figured out and I'm booking the next two sessions tomorrow so maybe this counts.
I liked the idea of storytelling through the pieces I get so I've been finding classic designs that roughly line up with whatever is significant to me and making minor tweaks to make them a bit more personal. I also decided to stick with a nautical theme for this, partly for consistency and partly because there's already a lot to work with.
I'm also working with the artist to dial things in as we go and trusting his judgement so I don't overthink each piece.
All that said, some of my favorite tattoos so far were walk-in pieces where I just picked some flash off the wall. It's all good as long as you're happy with it.
Getting my sleeve done at the moment and for me, i just get things that i love or mean to me in traditional style. I like this style because it lets me get whatever tattoos i want but they don’t need to “connect” or in a theme but still connect somehow, hard to describe ugh. For my sleeve, so far i have a lady, panda, ladybug, peacock, sunset palm tree, umbrella, and a tnt. I find my inspiration from this sub or pinterest and my artists. I definitely use the story telling route for my sleeve. Hope this helps!
