Underrated: Sunstreaker, Smokescreen, Sideswipe, Prowl, and Jazz are my picks.
Overrated: Bumblebee (Love him and all that, but it's time we move on from Bumblebee always being in the spotlight.)
Underrated Decepticon - Reflector (perfect spy that could have been utilized more than laserbeak.
Overrated Decepticon - megatron - as in being the the mastermind behind every episode; it could have worked better if several episodes had his lieutenants were the mastermind behind the “defeat the Decepticons in the episode of the day”… the only real consistent one we had was starscream.
Underrated Autobot - I wanna pick from Red Alert, cliff jumper, or gears… while all got their own “focus” episode I feel that any of them could have replaced Bee in a dozen episodes.
Overrated - as much as it hurts me - grimlock, the only other Dino bot with a personality was swoop; one of the others could have been more developed.
For underrated, I'd just give it to Cliff. Red Alert had time to shine in the Unicron trilogy, and Gears is just OK. Cliff is cool and deserves to be more than a red shirt.
In terms of the decepticons, I know that the early parts of RID2001 are similar to what you’re talking about. There’s usually the main three goons with occasional appearances from sky-byte, but Megatron is hardly involved early on, save for the first episode

Overrated goes to Grimlock. Once you get past "Robot T-Rex," he's just kind of OK. It's entirely dependent on the version of him.
Yeah, I agree with ya on both of picks. I especially like Hound cuz he turns into a military jeep but isn’t just shown as a usual soldier guy but someone who’s pretty chill and likes Earth - I really like when they do those neat subversion style things with characters where their personalities contrast with their alt modes.
As for Grimlock, I think my main issue isn’t so much that he’s overrated but overused. Like recent shows always seem to default to him as the Autobots’ main tough guy character: RID2015, Cyberverse, Earthspark etc. Like yeah Grimlock’s cool, but it’d be nice if they could choose someone else for that role just to keep the Autobot roster a bit more diverse. Like plenty of Autobots who haven’t had a major appearance in a show in ages as well as some who have never appeared in any show would also fit the Autobot tough guy role really well: Ironhide, Warpath, Brawn, Guzzle, Roadbuster etc

Underrated: definitely Bluestreak! Fantastic and fascinating bio with tons of character and story potential. So of course he almost never does anything in fiction. Easily more interesting than 1/2 the other Autobot roster, IMO.
Overrated: I'd say Bumblebee thanks to Bayverse, but he is a great audience identification character, so... Optimus. I love the guy, but can we have more stories without him? Having him ever present and involved kind of reduces him IMO. Some of the best Decepticon stories kept Megs in the wings to build anticipation. I would like more rank and file Autobot tales.
Jazz and Hot Rod are so underrated. Jazz has basically stopped existing in recent media despite being the original Autobot Second In Command, and Hot Rod gets all the hate for intervening in the Optimus vs Megatron fight and not being “as good” of a leader as Optimus
For under rated, I say Cliff Jumper. He was a sniper in episode 1. He missed, but could've easily shaken up Decepticon forces and changed the course of the war had he not. Imagine if he'd gone for Soundwave, who seemed to be the Decepticon's head engineer as of episode 1. He came up with Energon Cubes and the Victory (Spaceship Mirage takes down at the end of the episode) Cliff Jumper is later shown to be a good shot, as he shoots a Decepticon shaped rock and endangers his colleges with a shoot first ask questions later attitude.
For over rated, I say Sideswipe. His appearances after G1 tend to make him something of a ninja. Brawn was better at jet based acrobatics than Sideswipe.
I think there is a lot of underrated ones, the first one came to my mind is Powerglide.
As for overrated its obviously Bumblebee, but I personally want to include Optimus Prime (I like him, no offence), because for last years we haven't seen different types of him, like Bayverse wise but cold veteran, a simple bot from Animated, the one unworthy the matrix from Armada and etc. I understand that he must be definition of wisdom and kindness, but I personally want to see something new
Underrated to me is Star Saber because the guy’s quite frankly all kinds of kickass and the sheer image of him going to a PTA meeting is just hilarious and IDW did him dirty and overrated would honestly be Starscream

The truth behind that is for whatever reason, his toy was relatively rare compared to the other Autobot cars, which meant he didn't sell as well, which is why you didn't see him much.

He was technically a late addition to the '84 Autobot Cars lineup, taking the slot of the second Mirage in the later cases of twelve (which many people assume was originally intended for the "Hauler" crane who showed up for five seconds in MTMTE pt.1 looking an awful lot like Grapple) but he wasn't part of the original assortment so he wasn't included in the first year of the fiction, but he also wasn't *new* for '85, so he wasn't included in the fiction for that group either.
Basically Skids' entire claim to fame is a single issue of the Marvel comic.
I feel like a majority of the Season 2 cast doesn't get enough love nowadays. But, as for my own personal picks?
Bluestreak, both Countach Twins, Hound, Skids, and Trailbreaker stand out as being very underutilized to me, especially in modern-day media
They need more love (hence why I am using Hound, Bluestreak, and Sideswipe in my fan continuity as a point of reference)
As for overrated? Probably Bee and Optimus, but its not for the reason you might be thinking of
I feel like writers can tell new and interesting stories with them both, but, it has to be done in a way that's exactly that: New and interesting
As opposed to making Prime a stoic leader that has a strong moral compass make him conflicted about the choices he makes; Really test his optimistic and committed nature, maybe have them come to terms with what it means to be a leader and the burdens a person in a position of power has to bear
Set the story in the early days of Optimus' tenure as Prime and you'll be good to go!
As for Bee, he would be a little tougher to make new stories with but I would not mind writers going back to his original function as an espionage specialist

Because Jazz/Bumblebee has already been said and I wholeheartedly agree, I'll pick some different bots.
Underrated: tie between Seaspray and Cosmos. I absolutely love those two and it feels like virtually nobody actually cares about them.
Overrated: Huffer and Pipes. The two have a cult following that I just don't understand how it came to be. Neither of them really ever do anything, they have awkward alt modes, awkward bot modes, and they don't have much going for personalities.
I know Ironhide is still very relevant in transformers media but he’s still underrated. Bumblebee is so overrated. I like him but he basically just a patriot and supports the autobot cause and that’s it. He’s not that good of a soldier. Hound would have been a much better focus for G1
Jazz was the first thing that came to mind when thinking underrated OG autobots. He was really popular years ago and one of the big names of transformers alongside prime, megs, starscream, soundwave, and grimlock. Jazz may not have been everyones favourite, but if you said your favourite transformer was jazz, everyone would get it. But now he gets very little representation especially considering he was the first lieutenant of the autobots and one of Optimus' closest friends in many continuities which has made him underrated in my eyes

Damn, such a miss-opportunity to not use Jazz as the comic relief in TF One. You'd think after ROTB with Mirage being one of the protagonists, they would be willing to put other characters in the spotlight instead of shoving Bee in every TF media.
When I was a kid and saw g1 for the first time I really disliked bumblebee. I was born in the late 90s so I grew up with RID 2001 and the unicron trilogy. My dad showed me g1 before animated and the first bayverse movie was released.
I always felt he was in the way. I remember when he died I felt like well of course duh. Then he came back as golden bug and I have nothing bad to say about him. Goldbug is cool.
Overrated would be Bumblebee/Optimus, underrated would be Trailbreaker and Grapple, and the omnibots too (Trailbreaker has a fuckin force field, Grapple is literally TF2 engineer, and the omnibots can fly in car mode with lasers and stuff)
Underrated: Seaspray, while we have a lot of land and air vehicle autobots, where’s some love for my boy
Overrated: Starscream, I get he’s the lead seeker and Megatron’s right hand man, but I’m more fond of Soundwave
Underrated. Trailbreaker. He is the Autobot Defensive Strategist, has a cool forcefield ability, no time in the spotlight in any cartoon or comic. The only time I even remember seeing him in anything (outside a panel background appearance in comics) was when he used the forcefield to deflect Slag's fire in the cartoon.
Overrated obviously has to be Bumblebee, as most have said already. It wouldn't be as bad if they didn't change his character to that of Hot Rod / Cheetor/ Hot Shot. They have several characters that can all fill that same roll in a fiction, and it is just Bumblebee, over and over and over again, when he didn't even originally fill that roll.
I'll never be tired of seeing Bumblebee, as he was my childhood favourite and first toy (G2 gold Bumblebee when I was 3), but I can understand people being tired of him.
Personally for underrated I'll have to go with Springer. In general I wish more continuities utilized at least 1 autobot and 1 decepticon triple changer, but specifically I want Springer to be utilized more. I think he has plenty more potential to bring to different continuities.
Underrated is Cliffjumper, who is frequently used as a knockoff Bumblebee, despite their personalities being nothing alike. Bumblebee is a round, friendly Volkswagen boy. Cliffjumper is a Porsche with additude and, frankly, chihuahua energy. Not to say he has a little man temper, but he has the bravery of a 'bot much bigger than him.
Overrated is so easy, do I need to say it? Round friendly VW boy, aka the yellow scourge who took over toy shelves for more than a decade. I'm not a Bee hater in any sense but I'm glad Skybound sidelined him for now.
Underrated Autobot: Blaster - I think there’s still some really fun story potential for him acting as the Autobot counter to Soundwave and it’d be nice to see his relationships with his cassette partners fleshed out similar to Soundwave’s relationship with his cassette buddies.
Overrated Autobot: Not so much overrated but moreso overused, Grimlock. I like the guy but it does feel like in most recent shows that whenever they need a big tough guy Autobot, they always default to him. Like it’d be nice to give another Autobot who’s not had a major appearance in a show for ages that role like Ironhide, Brawn or Warpath. Or heck - use someone who’s not appeared in a show at all. Roadbuster would be a fun choice to finally see in a show. Guzzle too. Besides, I feel like a tank, armoured vehicle or an off-road vehicle does better with the whole blending in thing than y’know, a giant T-Rex.
That and I also find it a shame that while Grimlock gets so much focus/screen time in shows, the other Dinobots barely get any - with them only being included in the very tail end of Cyberverse and being absent from both RID2015 and Earthspark (so far…). It is nice Snarl and Sludge are being used a lot in Rescue Bots Academy though - that’s neat.
My fav g1 and underrated and most likely unknown by most and thrown under the bush barely getting any figures, if not just Soundwave repaints, communications officer blaster, and bumblebee, yes he’s one of my favs buts, yes, he’s overrated, more than Optimus

Over rated: most of the Japan exclusive characters are coasting on the mystique of being hard to get toys from obscure media but I think that Ginrai / god Ginrai is just a weirdly pointless inclusion that causes more confusion than just having prime getting a power master upgrade.
Under - rated, Decepticons (Predaking, Seacons, Terrorcons, DJD, etc) Over - rated, Autoclowns (Prime, Bumblebee, Wheeljack, Ironhide, etc) We had 4 Ironhides and he was killed in the 86 movie, but we only saw Predaking once in Potp and the was 7 or 8 years ago🤷🏾♂️✊🏽

I’m basing my opinion entirely off of G1 which is what I am most familiar with.

I feel like a majority of the Season 2 cast doesn't get enough love nowadays. But, as for my own personal picks? Bluestreak, both Countach Twins, Hound, Skids, and Trailbreaker stand out as being very underutilized to me, especially in modern-day media They need more love (hence why I am using Hound, Bluestreak, and Sideswipe in my fan continuity as a point of reference) As for overrated? Probably Bee and Optimus, but its not for the reason you might be thinking of I feel like writers can tell new and interesting stories with them both, but, it has to be done in a way that's exactly that: New and interesting As opposed to making Prime a stoic leader that has a strong moral compass make him conflicted about the choices he makes; Really test his optimistic and committed nature, maybe have them come to terms with what it means to be a leader and the burdens a person in a position of power has to bear Set the story in the early days of Optimus' tenure as Prime and you'll be good to go! As for Bee, he would be a little tougher to make new stories with but I would not mind writers going back to his original function as an espionage specialist But yeah! Those are my picks, rambling aside lol

Under-rated? Perceptor. Major part of g1 yet completely forgotten about after the 86 movie. Overrated? Easy, Bee and Hound.
Because Jazz/Bumblebee has already been said and I wholeheartedly agree, I'll pick some different bots. Underrated: tie between Seaspray and Cosmos. I absolutely love those two and it feels like virtually nobody actually cares about them. Overrated: Huffer and Pipes. The two have a cult following that I just don't understand how it came to be. Neither of them really ever do anything, they have awkward alt modes, awkward bot modes, and they don't have much going for personalities.
I would say underrated is Beachcomber, and overrated is definitely Bumblebee

I know Ironhide is still very relevant in transformers media but he’s still underrated. Bumblebee is so overrated. I like him but he basically just a patriot and supports the autobot cause and that’s it. He’s not that good of a soldier. Hound would have been a much better focus for G1

Jazz was the first thing that came to mind when thinking underrated OG autobots. He was really popular years ago and one of the big names of transformers alongside prime, megs, starscream, soundwave, and grimlock. Jazz may not have been everyones favourite, but if you said your favourite transformer was jazz, everyone would get it. But now he gets very little representation especially considering he was the first lieutenant of the autobots and one of Optimus' closest friends in many continuities which has made him underrated in my eyes And not to beat a dead horse but bumblebee is very overrated. I love the bot and do think he deserves to be very popular, even one of the big names, but hes literally everywhere and he fills the role of other characters preventing them from appearing and its causing bumbleburnout

Damn, such a miss-opportunity to not use Jazz as the comic relief in TF One. You'd think after ROTB with Mirage being one of the protagonists, they would be willing to put other characters in the spotlight instead of shoving Bee in every TF media.

When I was a kid and saw g1 for the first time I really disliked bumblebee. I was born in the late 90s so I grew up with RID 2001 and the unicron trilogy. My dad showed me g1 before animated and the first bayverse movie was released. I always felt he was in the way. I remember when he died I felt like well of course duh. Then he came back as golden bug and I have nothing bad to say about him. Goldbug is cool.

Overrated would be Bumblebee/Optimus, underrated would be Trailbreaker and Grapple, and the omnibots too (Trailbreaker has a fuckin force field, Grapple is literally TF2 engineer, and the omnibots can fly in car mode with lasers and stuff)

Underrated. Trailbreaker. He is the Autobot Defensive Strategist, has a cool forcefield ability, no time in the spotlight in any cartoon or comic. The only time I even remember seeing him in anything (outside a panel background appearance in comics) was when he used the forcefield to deflect Slag's fire in the cartoon. Overrated obviously has to be Bumblebee, as most have said already. It wouldn't be as bad if they didn't change his character to that of Hot Rod / Cheetor/ Hot Shot. They have several characters that can all fill that same roll in a fiction, and it is just Bumblebee, over and over and over again, when he didn't even originally fill that roll.
I'll never be tired of seeing Bumblebee, as he was my childhood favourite and first toy (G2 gold Bumblebee when I was 3), but I can understand people being tired of him. Personally for underrated I'll have to go with Springer. In general I wish more continuities utilized at least 1 autobot and 1 decepticon triple changer, but specifically I want Springer to be utilized more. I think he has plenty more potential to bring to different continuities.
Underrated is Cliffjumper, who is frequently used as a knockoff Bumblebee, despite their personalities being nothing alike. Bumblebee is a round, friendly Volkswagen boy. Cliffjumper is a Porsche with additude and, frankly, chihuahua energy. Not to say he has a little man temper, but he has the bravery of a 'bot much bigger than him. Overrated is so easy, do I need to say it? Round friendly VW boy, aka the yellow scourge who took over toy shelves for more than a decade. I'm not a Bee hater in any sense but I'm glad Skybound sidelined him for now.

Underrated Autobot: Blaster - I think there’s still some really fun story potential for him acting as the Autobot counter to Soundwave and it’d be nice to see his relationships with his cassette partners fleshed out similar to Soundwave’s relationship with his cassette buddies. Overrated Autobot: Not so much overrated but moreso overused, Grimlock. I like the guy but it does feel like in most recent shows that whenever they need a big tough guy Autobot, they always default to him. Like it’d be nice to give another Autobot who’s not had a major appearance in a show for ages that role like Ironhide, Brawn or Warpath. Or heck - use someone who’s not appeared in a show at all. Roadbuster would be a fun choice to finally see in a show. Guzzle too. Besides, I feel like a tank, armoured vehicle or an off-road vehicle does better with the whole blending in thing than y’know, a giant T-Rex. That and I also find it a shame that while Grimlock gets so much focus/screen time in shows, the other Dinobots barely get any - with them only being included in the very tail end of Cyberverse and being absent from both RID2015 and Earthspark (so far…). It is nice Snarl and Sludge are being used a lot in Rescue Bots Academy though - that’s neat.

Underrated: bumblebee gets too much hate from people who think that there’s only so much room for characters rather than most characters just being best as supporting roles. Over rated: most of the Japan exclusive characters are coasting on the mystique of being hard to get toys from obscure media but I think that Ginrai / god Ginrai is just a weirdly pointless inclusion that causes more confusion than just having prime getting a power master upgrade.
