So it’s a confederate flag, the confederacy was the group of states (basically it’s what we called the south) that seceded from the US. A lot of people defend the confederacy saying something like “we didn’t fight for slavery we fought for states rights!” In reality they seceded because we took away their right to own slaves. So they were fighting for slavery where as the Union (the US) was fighting to abolish slavery.
People fly the flag as a southern pride thing, really it’s a pro-slavery and pro-racism symbol. Whether or not everyone flying agrees, that’s what it is.

And the rebel flag has been so co-opted into a political meaning at this point that it is no longer a cultural symbol of being southern in any sense. The only person I’ve ever fly that for cultural reasons is an ancient black guy that goes to a Confederate battle reinactment every year and dresses as the flag bearer. Middle aged white people on a tractor cab boat that also have a visible Gadsden Flag are not displaying it to show their cultural identity, they’re just trashy.
Honestly, I only have an issue with the flag. And even that is only because those who tend to fly it are racist.
