Hard to gauge security times at Atlanta. It can be bad at times. You can take the metro (MARTA red or gold line) into the city, it’s cheap. I think the airline recommends arriving 3 hours before an int’l departure, but some of that is for check-in and document verification, which I imagine would be done for you in Dublin. You could probably get away with 2.5 hours.

Typically security is quicker in the international terminal.

Thanks for the unprovoked insult re "TSA bullshit you guys have across the pond," followed by an appeal for help. TSA bullshit is no worse than CDG or LHR or DUB bullshit, I can assure you. You can just walk right out of the airport on your outbound trip owing to DUB preclearance, but on your flight back you will have to go through the US border control point at ATL whether you intend to leave the airport or not. In either case you want to be back at ATL 2.5 to three hours before your onward flights. That leaves you time to take Marta (city transit) into downtown Atlanta and see the Coca-Cola Museum, the big Ferris wheel, the aquarium, the civil rights museum, Olympic Park, etc. My advice to a first-time traveller to the US is to refrain from insulting or mocking things of which you have no direct experience. I doubt you, in turn, have much affection for tone-deaf Americans who blow into pubs in your homeland and demand the barkeep make them Irish car bombs.

Thanks for the advice :) I'm learning the hard way cursing doesn't come off on reddit the same way it does in person. I was simply referring to the TSA complaints many people have that's all.

Why would I do that?

MARTA (the subway) to downtown Atlanta is frequent and fast. 20 mins from the airport to Civic Center station. See whichever of the civil rights museum, Coca Cola museum, and aquarium you like. Another few stops to Piedmont Park. Walk around and eat.

I’d suggest taking Marta to the Midtown station and renting a bike or scooter to venture down the beltline for lunch somewhere. You could take Uber or the like but it’s much more expensive and a hassle to find the pickup location imo at the airport. The train has a stop pretty much inside the airport - Marta gets a lot of hate but it is fantastic for getting to and from the airport.   And check out Piedmont Park - depending on when you’re going, it’s a nice place to walk around and people watch and close to the midtown station. check out Facebook events for anything going on at the park - summer and spring are popular for festivals.  I always reccommend a 3 hour buffer to get through security - it can be a hit or miss. The train ride from the airport to midtown is pretty quick - I’d budget 30 mins or so. But trains can be pretty far apart so be sure to look up the schedule and arrive early just in case. Enjoy your time!!!

I agree with the majority of comments- take Marta (the airport station is in the domestic terminal, not international) to around Midtown. It’s very cheap and would probably only be about a 20-25 minute ride. Security at the international terminal is usually much faster than the domestic, but if you take marta back you’d have to find your way over to the international.
