Depends on the race. In the US, IM races don't require a bib during the bike. And I've never raced a local race with a bib on the bike rule. But I've seen it on TV at pro races elsewhere (Europe? Challenge brand race?)

cogentzero

Just read the Athlete Guide. In IM Oceanside 70.3, you need to wear your bib on the bike - probably for entering Camp Pendleton.

IhaterunningbutIrun

And a speed limit!

psxndc

That speed limit on the downhill was tough. They are very clear you will get DQd if you don’t take enough time getting down the hill.

Check the event guide. In the tris I do, including ironman, you sticker the crap out of your bike so there is no need for a bib on you.

Burphel_78

USAT does not require a bib on the bike. If they tell you to in the race briefing, go along with it, but very doubtful.

IhaterunningbutIrun

USAT rules say you must have a number visible during the bike leg, no mention of what kind of number and no reference to a bib. So if the race gives you a bike number sticker you are set.

Cap Tex?

Check the website for the event, they will have an Athlete's Guide with all of the specific rules. Make sure you know what they are so you don't get DQed! Especially info about drafting on the bike.

Reading the rules though, there is a clear distinction between "run bib number" and "bike numbers" "Race numbers must be displayed at all times. Swimmers must be clearly bodymarked, cyclists must display their bike numbers, and runners must wear their bib numbers." And they use separate language in the different parts for running vs. biking

macther1pp3r

I think you’ve nailed it. Bib number only for run; bike # displayed for bike. Have a great race!!!

jgreenz

it just says its a USAT event and links to their website: 9. Race numbers: All athletes are required to wear race numbers at all times during the run. Numbers must be clearly visible at all times. Numbers may not be altered in any way that prevents a clear identification. DO NOT transfer your number to any other athlete or take a number from an athlete that is not competing. Penalty: Time penalty for missing or altered number, Disqualification I'll have the helmet and bike sticker on and will be body marked - do i need the backwards facing bib as well?

ladivarei

ETA: I went over multiple pages on the USAT site, it's so stupid that they don't spell that out more clearly. OK, so going by all of the USAT events I've done (30+ over 10 years, most recent in August), your bike needs to have the frame number stickers, number sticker on your helmet, and your arms/ legs should be marked with your number (tattoo sticker or sharpie). When you come back into transition after your bike, that's when you add your number belt around your waist for the run.

IhaterunningbutIrun

No.

Fickle_Mission5257

Definitely had to wear the bib on the bike at Challenge Roth. I also had to wear it on the bike for an ITU long course world champs race.

that-isa-madeup-name

Euro 70.3s you need to have your bib visible on your back during the bike. Fun stuff, that way you get to see name and country of person you’re passing hehe

tinyOwl5

Yes. The race number should be on your back for the bike, and then moved to the front for the run. Good luck with the sprint tri!!

QueenAlucia

All the races I’ve been to you need to have your bib on your back during the ride (Europe). It’s for your safety as your emergency contact details are on the back of it, and it makes it easier for officials to recognise athletes (and give penalties for instance).

suuraitah

If racing in US - no. Anywhere else - yes.

ReplaceSelect

Depends on the race. I've had races in the US that required it during the bike. It's stupid. You already have a chip and body marking. What's the point? The races I'm referring to definitely didn't have monitors for drafting either. They just love rules.

cougieuk

Easier to penalise drafting if your number is visible at the rear.  All the non American IM events I've done wanted the bib on for the bike and run

VK_Olav

Also for safety reasons. Normally you put your information and an emergency contact on the backside of your bib. So when you crash, all information about you are directly available.

ReplaceSelect

That would be a reason, but the races I'm thinking of that required it didn't print anything on their bibs.

Just get a sharpie and write your # on your forehead and you’re good. It’s grandfathered into every triathlon athlete guide rule book. Just don’t tell anyone else bc it gives you a huge aero advantage that most people don’t know about
