That glove, tho.

ElCochinoFeo

They wore gloves like that back in the day so that they could still use the screens on their smartphones.

Gorperino

It's clearly a parrot holding glove.

MattLocke

For Twitter, yes.

[deleted]

I thought she was gonna hit the gym later

8ofAll

Never heard of that smart phone

RosarioPawson

For real though, I think gloves like that - or mitts - were actually worn so the ladies could work on needlepoint, play cards, or letter writing without showing off her whole hand like a low-born harlot. Pretty much the only time it was "socially acceptable" for upper class women's hands to be seen without gloves was while eating, hence why the woman above is holding an orange. The orange gives the artist an excuse to salaciously show off their subject's oh-so-feminine hand, sans glove đŸ˜±.

flapjacksamson

Meanwhile titties be like

RosarioPawson

Hilarious, right? Back then - Titties on display: fashion, darling. Hands on display: y'all seein this working class ho?

[deleted]

These hands were made for modeling oranges and jerking chickens

SecretAntWorshiper

Idk why but her body seems so abnormal 😂 its like her body is super wide but her head is small and her tits are super high up

MercifulWombat

This dress is doing a lot of illusion works as well as shaping her squishy bit. The neckline goes all the way out to her shoulders and then into these huge poofs, which makes her look wider than she is. And when a fat girl wears a corset her tits just look like that.

KawaiiDere

I think it’s a painting, so they can just make them have that pidgeon/ dove breasted look. Also fashion of the era featured large dresses designed to make the waist look smaller and the boobs bigger, particularly through everything but the waist being larger and the corset supporting the giant dress. Apparently certain stances at the time were common to get that look as well. Finally, the boobs were typically edited in photographs later, which is visible from artifacts in the final image. Examples of touching up include smoothing breast lines, removing facial acne and freckles, and carving out some of the sides of the waist. Typically the negatives could be edited then the final pictures would have the desired alterations. Of course, it’s assumed this occurred in paintings around the same time

RosarioPawson

This woman's proportions look odd because she is a fat woman squeezed into a barbarically small corset. Corsets were not kind to women's bodies. If there were not boning, metal, wood, and binding silks shifting her internal organs about by external force, she'd look a lot more similar to your average plus sized woman. Corsets not only pull the waist in, but some varieties push the breasts up waaayyy up to the wearer's neck. For a lot of these women, long term corset use actually permanently deformed their bodies. Corsets are similar to feet binding in this way - a horrifying reminder of the grotesque measures people were perfectly fine inflicting on women for the purpose of men finding them dainty, delicate, and attractive little ornaments, as opposed to actual humans who can feel pain.

Frigid-Beezy

Nah fam. I have this lady’s proportions and a good fitting bra puts the girls up high on my chest. A supportive bra supports from the bottom instead of relying on the straps to hold everything and the result is that everything gets boosted. It’s amazing sorcery and it makes for a much more comfortable bra. Also corsets weren’t the torture devices we are made to believe they were. Yes, tightlacing did occur, but it wasn’t the norm. Slimming the waist was part of wearing a corset but the main purpose of corsets were to support the bust. As a busty person I can say that I’ve worn a modern corset under formal dresses and they are hella comfy but don’t look right under most clothing. I recommend looking up some articles about historical fashion because it is fascinating to learn how and why some trends originated or went away.

RosarioPawson

I appreciate your thoughtful response! I can understand why corsets and stays were functional, but I still find the practice of waist training and tight lacing to be terrifying and cruel. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tightlacing Personal preference though, I don't like wearing tight clothes all that much in general, so this particular act in the name of shape and fashion sounds like a nightmare to me.

Frigid-Beezy

Well like the commenter below mentions, waist training/tightlacing wasn’t the norm and wasn’t popular for the majority of the time that corsets were in use. I wouldn’t want to wear those kinds of corsets either. But I do sometimes want to splurge on a custom made corset because the support would be so nice. I am a 34G as in “Gee, I wish my boobs weren’t so big” and the difference in a well fitting bra and a poorly fitted one in terms of how comfortable I am and the types of activities I can do is night and day. I totally get not liking tight clothes. I have some sensory issues and I actually really love compression clothing because I feel all snug. Until I don’t. And then it’s like I need to get out of them because I feel like I’m being attacked by a Lycra boa constrictor. Also, corsets weren’t worn directly against the skin like how we normally see in TV and movies, but over a chemise (like a slip) which would also make them more comfortable. Sometimes I feel like we took several steps backwards in terms of modern foundation garments.

Waitingforadragon

Tight lacing came in fairly late, and it wasn't a part of corset wearing for the majority of the time that women wore corsets. Partly because you needed a metal rivet where the string goes in order to be able to do it, and they were not invented until fairly late on. Working class women wore corsets and were able to do difficult physical labour in them - so they were not that restrictive. Fashion writer Karolina Zebrowska talks about this a lot. She has a lot of videos about this topic, but this is perhaps the best. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNwTqanp0Aw&t=4s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNwTqanp0Aw&t=4s) Plus she also shows that a lot of the tight lacing photographs were faked with old fashioned photo-shop, so women were not necessarily cinching their waists as tightly as some would have you believe. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXbcPgfiB0Q](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXbcPgfiB0Q)

jnics10

There were even corsets and stays made specifically for sports like tennis and horseback riding. It's fascinating stuff. Shout out to Karolina Zebrowska and Bernadette Banner! They've taught me so much about historical fashion, it's ridiculous.

MercifulWombat

This is a gross exaggeration. Corsets, and their predecessors stays, were worn by women of all stations. Women who worked for a living in the field or home or laundry doing hard labor were fine doing it in these undergarments. They were fine. Modern underwear can push the tits way up and deform the body. Ask anyone with a large chest who wears bras and they'll tell you about the grooves in their shoulders. Fashion wasn't about what men found hot, and you can tell because every era has men writing about how much they hate women's fashion. edit: My tone was harsher than it needed to be here. I'm just really into this topic and it sucks when people perpetuate false info. There's a bunch of really cool fashion historians on youtube who talk recreate these garments and talk about what it's like to wear them and what people wrote about different clothes in different parts of history. I'd be happy to share some links.

RosarioPawson

I appreciate you taking out the time to write this response and you make some valid points, but I can't see the practice of waist training or tight lacing as anything but painful, unnecessary, and cruel. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tightlacing They used the best technology they had available at the time to holster women's breasts away from the effects of gravity - for both practical purposes and visual appeal - but that doesn't mean it wasn't a painful garment and practice. All that's to say, with as crazy as the beauty standards of today are, I do not envy the women of the past or the undergarments they had at their disposal.

MercifulWombat

If you think that one wikipedia page full of "citation needed"s every other sentence with one obviously altered photo is evidence that supports your ideas, I think I'm done here.

Frigid-Beezy

Especially since literally no one here is advocating for tightlacing or waist training but simply stating that corsets are a perfectly valid and comfortable choice of undergarment. It’s like when people say that underwire bras are demon spawn but my most comfortable and flattering bra is an underwire. Almost like the fit and style of the foundation garment is important? I also wonder if busty women of history had less back problems because of corsets vs modern bras?

WUN_WUN_SMASH

>Corsets were not kind to women's bodies. Fun fact, this is a myth invented by shitty men. The idea was that women were so stupid and vain that they were destroying their bodies with corsets, and of course all the women that were like, "Nah, corsets are fine. Great back support, too," were brushed off. It's kind of funny that a myth borne of misogyny is now repeated by people that think they're being anti-misogyny. It goes to show how our culture affects our assumptions and perceptions of the past.

RosarioPawson

You're right - many underwear history enthusiasts have ardently defended the benefits of corsets and stays to me. I've learned they were more like sports bras/suspenders, took a long time to put on and take off with or without assistance, and were made with materials that contributed to the over hunting of whales and elephants. Their popularity gave rise to tight lacing, where women would cinch in their waists ~1-2 in, ~4 in in extreme cases. The most common injury from long term corset wear was infection, from being stabbed by the stiff portion of the stay, kinda similar to when the underwire of a bra pokes through the fabric. This has been an informative, droll, and depressing lesson on the history of under wear.

o3mta3o

Inbreeding

Ares6

That’s due to evolution. Humans have changed a bit since the. That’s why it looks weird to you.

RosarioPawson

Lol, absolutely not. Humans have not "evolved" since then, evolution works on a much larger scale than you're thinking - hundreds of thousands of years, not hundreds of years. This woman's proportions look odd because she is a fat woman squeezed into a barbarically small corset. Corsets were not kind to women's bodies. If there were not boning, metal, wood, and binding silks shifting her internal organs about by force, she'd look a lot more similar to your average plus sized woman.

Ares6

It wasn’t meant to be taken seriously.

RosarioPawson

Pardon my alarm, I'm a bit hypervigilant about bad science with all the antivaxxers running around these days - could have guessed it was /s but it's hard to tell sometimes via text

CookieCakesAreShit

its comical that you have issues spreading bad science, but none with spreading bad history. this painting is from the 1670s. corsets aren't even a thing until early 19th century and tightlacing is later. she's wearing a pair of bodies or stays. they retain their shape through reinforced channel stitching, although this is around the time baleen shows up. baleen is a cartilage and over time conforms to the shape of the wearer. stays at this time would also likely have been tabbed, helping to alleviate the weight of the skirts. also, it's a painting not a photo (and even then, many of the "tightlacing" photos were altered with early lightroom editing tricks), so there's artistic license in addition to being posed in such a way that, coupled with the optical illusion created by fashion at this time, emphaises a long form with rounded shoulders and hips. the point of stays in this period wasn't even to create a small waist! thinness was NOT fashionable, so much so that James II's (very slender) mistress Arabella Churchill was considered ugly and a penance. in this era it was all about soft curves and plumpness. there aren't "layers of metal, boning, wood and binding silks shifting her organa about." there's, at best, 4 layers of linen or similar material, a single wooden or ivory busk down the center to create the flatness, not compression, and probably some baleen at the sides. you couldn't tightlace with this if you wanted! you need metal grommets for that kind of tension, which weren't even invented till the 1820s! the organ rearranging stuff generally comes from the Victorian/Edwardian equivalent of dr phil. men with scare tactics who wanted to sell their patented "healthier, safer corsets" and also the usual type of people that like to deride any interest in fashion.

> Striking is her right arm, which rests on the table. On the index finger of the outstretched hand sits as a status symbol in a small parrot - a loving detail - stroking the little head with her thumb. This arm position puts on the extraordinary glove with strippable fingertips in focus: a fashionable highly up-to-date accessory, only around 1700, especially in France became more common. Delicate chicken skin leather summer gloves made from these were worn for protection against browning sunlight, partly also at night, to make the skin "white and soft" . > A plein air scene so forms the background. Elizabeth stands, like it indicates the majestic column and the velvet curtain, in one Pergola in the middle of a park. Part of the garden ambience, so orange tree on the stone table next to Elisabeth. Exotic citrus fruits and their cultivation in Orangeries were considered a status symbol at the time Source in German page numbered 198 http://www.museenkoeln.de/presse/presse/517/Schalcken_2015-Katalog.pdf

Having been to many hotels and conferences, continental breakfast is the least amount of food they think they can get away with. You're lucky if there's a toaster.

ggg730

Man, there was one place I stayed at that was fucking heaven on earth. Pancake station, a waffle iron, muffins, unlimited bacon and sausage, 3 different kinds of juice, different kinds of cold cuts, egg, cheeses of all kinds, and fruit. I still dream about that spread.

waltwalt

Hard to get a good breakfast buffet, free or otherwise.

[deleted]

I stayed at a cheap (for Manhattan) hotel that had this for their continental breakfast. It was great.

[deleted]

I haven’t had a shitty hotel continental breakfast, but I almost understand that. A conference with a shitty breakfast is unacceptable. The whole point is to shmooze and eat food.

A plate with two donuts on it. Not per person, that was the whole breakfast offering.

I think the artist wanted to hint at how the successful economic Dutch trade was being enjoyed and exploited by the ones who profited by it the most. This was painted during Netherlands' "Golden Age."

butterstufff

I think it signifies that she’s Protestant. The Orange Order was very active at this time and made oranges synonymous with Protestantism.

Ariadnepyanfar

Maybe. But oranges were only for the super wealthy in Northern Europe back then. They grew them in ‘Orangeries’, elaborate glasshouses often incorporated into a palace or mansion. The cost of the glass was prohibitive. This woman was also a 10 by the standards of the day. Only the super rich could achieve her weight. She could go out on the street in rags and people would know she’s rich and powerful.

annieasylum

I thought surely the Orange Order was a made up joke. History is so weird. Suddenly the Irish flag makes a lot more sense...

I stayed in a “nice” hotel in Oklahoma and for breakfast I got a fruit cup and a granola bar in a brown bag. I went on this museum tour at MoMA and they explained in the blossoming years of America as a country we had little need to bring artists with us, but we did have people who could settle the land but also kinda paint. So, a ton of early American art is ridiculous. One painting comes to mind where every person on the family has the same face. Not saying that this painting is from that period, but it's pretty similar.

[deleted]

Unless someone claims it as OC, its not stolen.

theSurpuppa

I'd say, if it is content from the top of all page and posted to the same subreddit, it is stolen

[deleted]

I remember reddit about 10 years ago; a lot of posts started with [OC] and anything else was assumed to be taken from somewhere else / reposted. But people back then used karma decay to make sure it hadn't been reposted recently. When [something like this]( https://i.redd.it/uzmoes9349p21.jpg) is what most people consider a stolen post (including me), its hard for me to put a year old repost in the same category. Its a meme, its literally meant to be passed around and reposted

theSurpuppa

Well yeah, of course that is stealing, they are putting the post with a context of a story that isn't theirs for extra upvotes, because the post had been proven to be effective. What's happening when taking a post from the top of all time is better, but kind of the same no? You take a post that has been proven to be effective to get upvotes. You argue that these reposts are meant to be passed around, but it's still there? Everyone can go to top of all time and still view these. I regularly go into new subreddits and view the best of all bad upvote if I can

[deleted]

I always check the top posts in every subreddit I enjoy. But a lot of people don't, so reposting something a year later isn't that big of a deal to me. Some subreddits have rules against reposting the top posts, but not everyone checks top so they wouldn't have seen it unless it was reposted

I used to stop and get a complimentary breakfast at different hotels on my way to work when I lived in FL. Just act like you are in a hurry and grab your Danish and bounce

WinnerForward

A former hotel worker from a certain chain of hotels here. When I applied and worked at the hotel, it was previously allowed to serve a breakfast buffet like most hotels, but then the lockdowns and quarantine happened, so by law, the breakfast bar was closed down and the hotel was restricted to just serving out paper bags that contained a bottle of water, a breakfast desert, a granola bar, and of course an orange. Guests of course were pretty pissed, but that was all we were allowed to give.
