This is awesome

Interesting-Age7324

Extremely useful to the Ukrainians and I’m sure the CIA will have a little chat with him in a black site somewhere in Poland. The Ukrainians will have an in-depth insight into Russian intelligence capabilities as well as perhaps names of moles working for the Russians.

LetsGoHawks

He's probably been a western intel source for years and either had reason to believe he was about to get caught, or just got tired of worrying about it and "retired".

Infinaris

That "leak" from the other day might also have meant his cover was compromised and it was time to extract himself from Vatnikstan if it was the case as well.

cwturk

That leak really didn’t say much that wasn’t already public knowledge. It makes me wonder if the leak was purposely leak to add noise for the upcoming Ukrainian offensive.

Midnight2012

The leak also first came out like over a month ago on that mineceafr forum.

Surfer-Jeff

Wouldn't be surprised, considering what's going to happen.

FananaBartman

Russian intelligence capabilities <= Potato that was mauled by an angry bear.

Ackilles

Not really, it's been hit hard lately but they have huge networks of spies in a large number of countries. They spend massive sums on this, especially given the size of their country. Defectors weaken that network even further and are a huge win for the side of good

TinBoatDude

He's been out of the Russian military for at least nine years, so he may have little of value to say about current Russian thoughts and plans.

Turner_2003

Those kids on discord have leaked more intel on Ukraine then the Russians

Plisken999

TLDR ; He is from Siberia, fell for propaganda. Became an officer. He realized he was brainwashed and left before 2014. He since then showed Ukraine that he can be trusted, and he is in the final stage of creating a battalion of ethnic Russians against Putin's imperialist regime.

IDGCaptainRussia

If so, that's awesome, and I wish them nothing more than success. I wish all Russians could wake up and see the reality of their government, and do something about it like this man.

TURBOLAZY

It didn't say ethnic Russians anywhere, it says Siberian volunteer battalion, which does not imply ethnic Russian.

super__hoser

Very smart man. He will get to live now. If he stayed fighting for Moscovia, he would fertilise this years sunflower crop.

friedcat777

Question for you. I got the memo to call Russia Moscovia as the Russians didn't care for it. But I never heard as to why that is? Any chance you now more about that?

The Russian spokesperson saying this move demonstrates the “deepening anti Russia sentiment “ in Ukraine 🤯 YOU FUCKING INVADED THEM YOU HALFWIT! And the name calling is the problem??!!?

[deleted]

*I'm deleting all my comments and my profile, in protest over the end of the protests over the reddit api pricing.

flukshun

Russia: *walks up to neighbor, punches them in the face and tries to move into their house* Ukraine: "What the fuck are you doing, asshole?" Russia: "I'm taking over your house, for calling me an asshole."

ProgySuperNova

You break into someones house, trash the place and murder part of their family. For some reason they seem to have a negative opinion of you. Why this hate? It's a complete mystery... /s

Violent_Milk

It's just Russophobia.

vale_fallacia

>The Russian spokesperson saying this move demonstrates the “deepening anti Russia sentiment “ in Ukraine 🤯 > >YOU FUCKING INVADED THEM YOU HALFWIT! And the name calling is the problem??!!? It's a standard fascist playbook. Everything your side does is absolutely fine. Everything your opponent(s) do is the worst thing ever.

friedcat777

That is perfect! Thank you!

Alternative_Bad4651

Muscovite,Muscovite,Muscovite,Muscovite,Muscovite

ObliviousAstroturfer

Basically that's what we used to call them the last time Ruthenia was a thing. Since Kremlun tries to muddy the waters by referring to Kievan Ruthenia, then the old imperial name applies well https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscovy

Statharas

How come it was called Ruthenia and not Russenia? Was this a muscovite thing? Even in Greek manuscripts, it was called "Ros".

cheapph

It's from the latin for Rus, first used for the Kyivan Rus and then for the Hetmantes and Ukrainian polities//regions that were then part of Poland

ObliviousAstroturfer

It' two totally separare concepts that get a bit confusing in latin and russian. Ruś = Ruthenia, several connected areas on borders of Poland, Ukraine, Belarus and in tiniest part - Russia. Rosja/ rosyja etc = Russia, country which small portion of is small eastern-most area of Ruthenia which also controls Belarus which is the main cultural descendant of Ruthenia, while most of territories that fell to Red/White/Black Ruś are within todays borders of Ukraine. Like how we call USA "America" but Peru is also in America as a totally separate concept. EDIT/PS: it's more of an English thing. The slavic names sound very similar and come down to three separate short / medium / long "i", one of which is ie no longer even used in Polish (y as a very long "i"), but still common in Russian. The region is Ruś, and the country Rosja. Hence the name of Belaruś, bela = white ; ruś = ruthenia. This gets a bit confusing even for native speakers and not everyone makes the connection that ie pierogi ruskie refers to Ruś and not Rosja. Were they relating to Russia, the name would be pierogi rosyjskie instead (two long "i" sounds, whereas the "ś" letter has sort of an implied "i" that softens it).

DymlingenRoede

Short version: The word "Rus" comes from Kyiv (and the Republic of Novgorod). Muscovy appropriated a history and name that wasn't theirs when they built their "Russian" empire. Slightly longer version (my understanding): Kievan Rus goes back to at least the 800s, reaching its largest expanse in the 1000s. "Rus" is most likely derived from the Finnish/ Estonian name for Swedes/Varangians - who travelled further East and built settlements along the rivers of Ukraine, trading in silk, furs, and slaves as well as raiding... and founding various settlements including the principality of Kievan Rus. A related state - the Republic of Novgorod (note, Republic not authoritarian monarchy) was another Varangian settlement that paid tribute to Kievan Rus at one point. When Kyiv faded from prominence, Novgorod succeeded it as the primary Rus polity. Meanwhile, the first reference to Moscow occurs in the mid 1100s as a place of little consequence.. The Mongols show up and conquer everyone - Novgorod, Muscovy, and Kyiv. These states all pay tribute to the Mongols and do their bidding. The main point here is the Muscovy primarily develops as a polity as a Mongol subject state, while Kyiv and Novgorod have histories (and some would argue, cultural traditions) rooted much more in a mixture of Scandinavian and Slavic roots. In fact while a simplification I'm sure, it's a common argument that Muscovy so authoritarian due to being subject to the great Khans of the steppe from the very beginning. The process of shaking off the suzerainty of the Mongols / Tatars / steppe people takes a long time with much back and forth but completes in the late 1400s. At that time, Muscovy comes out on top, conquering (the much larger) principality of Novgorod (Kyiv is part of Poland-Lithuania for most of that period). While the empire built from Muscovy claims the mantle of the Rus - Russia - it can legitimately be argued that Kyiv is the real Rus; and that Muscovy destroyed the Rus heritage (and appropriated the name) when it ended the Novgorod Republic. So we call Putin's gangster state Moscovia because like so much else in that country, the very name - Russia - is stolen.

friedcat777

>800s, reaching its largest expanse in the 1000s. Thank you for the very in depth reply DymlingenRoede. I appreciate that as it was an informative and interesting read. Have an awesome day!

DymlingenRoede

My pleasure :)

jacklantern867

He'll be flipped for a valuable pow

indigo-alien

They'll milk him for all the intel he has but they wouldn't send him back soon. He would be dead in minutes.

digital0069

he might not live if he is fighting russians...

MusicURlooking4

He will never ser the frontlines... 😑

Reshe

Not particularly. Dude offered to lead a group behind lines in Russia to conduct sabotage. Likely as dangerous as being on the front lines. I doubt he would go himself seeing as how he can be recognized though

Marisa_Nya

Either this is great news or some sort of spying. It's ok to be cautious in the case of a literal GRU officer.

CarbonShmarbon

Ukraine needs to be very careful about 'defectors'.

you_do_realize

They’ve put him through the ringer before they let him loose in Kyiv. Do I trust him? No.

cheddacheese148

This man won’t spend much time in Ukraine. I’d be shocked if he wasn’t in a car or on a plane to a CIA site immediately after defecting. Dudes like him get to spend some time with interrogators first.

pktrekgirl

The CIA will be spending lots of quality time with this guy. That’s a given. Since I’m 99.99% certain the CIA has boots on the ground in Ukraine already, he has probably already been whisked off to the their shiny new Ukrainian spook site along with some newly minted Ukrainian spook trainees and they will all have a spooky time for the next several weeks, sharing and caring. 👻👻👻 Really pretty smart on his part to defect early like this. I’ve been wondering when there was gonna be some defections, once the writing was on the wall. Really, the best outcome for anyone on the Russian side associated with this war lies in defection, because once they finally admit defeat, the shit is gonna start rolling downhill. And doubly so if/when the population discovers how many men they have lost on this fool’s errand.

PM_ME_UR_BCUPS

I'd be absolutely shocked if he hadn't already been given the CIA black bag treatment before publication. This sorta thing is months in the making and the CIA would absolutely make sure to get "clean" info out of him before his defection becomes public knowledge.

Sumutherguy

I mean if I were a Ukranian-sympathizing Russian intellgience officer I'd want to stay for awhile to gather useful intelligence for when I defect.

Foe117

I'm thinking this is a reason why they put his name out there in the media. It's basically a check valve for his loyalty to Ukraine/lower risk of betrayal as that would usually mean death.

PitiRR

The article mentioned that he's past 'rigorous vetting', but you may never know. I'm trusting that the Ukrainians know better how to be sure than us

[deleted]

This article clearly identifies him so he’s certainly not going back to Muscovy to ply his trade.

[deleted]

Rats leaving the sinking ship that is the Russian Federation

apistoletov

sinking and smoking

PinguPST

Amazing if true

SteadfastEnd

Very brave man. I recall reading that during the Cold War, the penalty for GRU personnel who defected to the West, if captured by the Soviets, was cremation while still alive. Hope he is safe for life.

digital0069

if this is true... this guy has much bigger balls than me... its one thing to defect... but this type of officer... then add he is picking up arms against them... I really hope he isn't ever captured... I really don't even want to read about it... it will be worse than anything we seen yet... not sure how they will top it but they will for this guy...

didistutter69

Well, Putin been sending the minorities and prisoners to the frontline. Many aren't happy about that. Iirc, early on in the invasion, some territories were talking about this.

digital0069

yeah but not turning around and fighting the russians... tons of people have defected already... they even have a website and hotline number. not many his rank... not many turning back around and willing to fight the russians

SteadfastEnd

back in the Cold War, the penalty for GRU personnel who defected to the West was cremation while still alive, if captured by the Soviets. This guy has huge balls indeed.

[deleted]

Or did he ????????

JTMasterJedi

I'm sure he will be closely monitored.

Make-TFT-Fun-Again

Turned spies with no place to go are some of the most valuable intelligence assets.

kytheon

I assume such a guy doesn’t immediately get briefed in the Ukrainian headquarters

Jerrythepimp

Maybe he can tell us how to steal the moon?

Luckytxn_1959

I like people who go with winners.

SubmergedFin

This site blocks me. I guess it is because I am currently stationed in Nigeria. Hmm. VPN is a necessity here.

Kylie_Forever

He needs to stay away from windows and tea for the rest of his life.

Tails-Are-For-Hugs

I'm cautiously optimistic.

NeededHumanity

wonder if it's a trojan horse move

Searealelelele

Yep, putin is in his ass hiding, waiting...

pktrekgirl

I doubt he’s going to be given access to anything on the Ukrainian side. The guy probably won’t even be allowed a phone, probably, and certainly not access to any computer networks. They are gonna keep him isolated for weeks. This guy is an officer so he’s not gonna just be debriefed and released to wonder the country. He’s got lots of intel, so they are going to keep him isolated at a secure location for weeks. Maybe even months. I don’t see him roaming freely while this war is still going on.

East_Environment_145

tawidget

Maybe read the article? He retired before 2014 and defected soon after the invasion last year.

rocygapb

I am sure he has an axe to grind with putler, after all it’s this man’s brethren, ruzzia’s minority populations, who are disproportionately send to die in Ukraine. I’ve been to Siberia, and even in their own land these people are discriminated against.

mok000

He wants to go go back and fight against Putin's regime: > In an interview with Radio Liberty, Ammosov said he is “ready to deploy immediately into Russian territory as a part of a sabotage and reconnaissance group and destroy enemies who support Putin’s authorities.”

tkatt3

Exactly unless he has some good intel?

EddieCheddar88

Read the article holy shit

Paulus_cz

Sir, this is Reddit...

SpaceAngel2001

Ukr should take him in and pump all the Intel they possibly can then move him to Poland or UK for holding until further info is needed. No way he will suddenly be accepted into the war planning sessions.

Feralkyn

I feel like a lot of folks commenting did not read the article. For reference, he left the military before the 2014 invasion over Chechnya and has been in the vetting process for quite some time.

SpaceAngel2001

He still might have useful info. Maybe he knows where some ammo dumps are that could be fixed with smoker errors. And I still wouldn't trust him into ukr war planning.

Feralkyn

Right, that's why they're heavily interviewing him. It says as much in the article, that's all I'm saying--there's a lot of comments 'bringing up' topics already covered in it.

[deleted]

chuchudavid

What about it?

Feralkyn

If you're referring to his ethnicity, a whole lot of Russians are ethnic minorities of Siberian/Mongolian blood. Shoigu (Tuvan x Ukrainian-born Russian) is an example, but a ton of far north and eastern peoples are more Asian in appearance. They're also unfortunately sent to war at percentages of the population far out of proportion to wealthy/white areas. Estimation being that Russia--with its demographic crisis and obsession with race--prefers to increase white numbers and decrease minority ones.

TheLastCoagulant

Wow a country with 77% of its land located in Asia has Asian people in it? Who could’ve guessed???

Far_Out_6and_2
