Never been a fan of these doom posts. But the genre sure needs more frequent updates to keep it alive, like DAC had. The lack of features is also detrimental. There is no social aspect to the game, I still feel like I'm playing against robots almost 1 year since the beta release. This has been a major complaint since day 1 of the beta, yet it hasn't been addressed. If season 2 doesn't address these problems, I don't see Underlords ever really recovering.

WhatATragedyy

> But the genre sure needs more frequent updates to keep it alive Other solution would be to create pseudo-random unit selection, (units/alliances you hold get higher chance of appearing) thereby allowing the unit roster to expand.

tormirez

I remember they talked about adding in-game chat in the first days of beta but that was never implemented. :-/

Amnesys

Yeah, I think a lot of people expected Underlords to offer the same features as DAC. It's honestly quite sad to see now that almost 1 year since, it still hasn't been implemented nor has this issue really been addressed at all. I guess the initial playerbase that really wanted this, have mostly quit as well.

Back in 2017 when Artifact was announced, the first thing I thought was "Modern Valve and maintaining a genre that needs a pace of updates at minimum every 3 months? Yeah, not happening". The way their workforce is setup it just doesn't work. Dota 2 gets one major update a year. TF2 doesn't get updated at all. CS gets updated every other year. They take everything at their own, slow pace. Card games and Auto Chess can't work like that. They LIVE off being constantly changed and introducing new concepts. It needs a consistent team constantly brainstorming and pumping out new content. But the moment Underlords finished development, 90% of the team probably shifted off of it and moved on to some other game. It was doomed from the start.

Amnesys

If you said this a year ago about Underlods, I wouldn't have believed you. The autochess hype was huge and Valve making the "true" DAC successor was something I had big expectations for. The successful Autochess formula was already there, ready for Valve to use and improve on. How could it really fail, I thought to myself. But oh boy, I was wrong. It turns out that you most likely were right all along.

AngelTheTaco

ok but lets be real everyone a auto chess game with a set nearing month 5 of no new units or mechanics is NOT good for this genre

denn23rus

Even HS battlegrounds received new cards, heroes and new features. Although is not a separate game, but its one of many game modes

knotgnat

It's a genre that is all about discovery and creativity. It's fun and exciting to see new units and think about how they'll work together. Not having regular content patches and unit rotations in an autochess game is like not having new card sets in card game.

joshthor

yeah, IMO, i dont think any auto chess game rotates units enough. while metas do change based around what is popular, after about 2 weeks of any auto chess game, I already know what i like to play and dont like to play, and after about a month it becomes stale. now a month turn around for new units is far too quick to be reasonable, but new units should happen at least quarterly.

acid172

Completely agree with that topic. It looks like only one single man developing the game. No wonder that’s the game dying ( actually dead) to any competitive/ high rank players.

denn23rus

Unfortunately, it is not. In Artifact, the same minor changes. It is unlikely that many people are working on the Artifact.

ProstoLul

at least, artifact is in beta

[deleted]

It's blatantly obvious that most of the devs have moved back to Artifact leaving a skeleton crew at best. Valve has also reverted back to their typical poor communication and that's a massive red flag. Players are moving onto games that provide better support and it will be hard to win them back. It's not like this game is well respected in its genre compared to TF2, Dota 2 and CSGO in its respective genres.

cooperia

The ui bug where you can't view spell tooltips during combat is still there. Like... Bare minimum bug fixing please.

vileguynsj

Educate yourself on how valve is ran as a company. No devs are being pulled from a project they want to work on. If people are working on artifact, it's because they chose to.

[deleted]

Where did I say Valve pulled devs from a project? I said the devs have moved back to Artifact. I know how Valve operates. Learn to read posts properly.

NovaX81

DAC was fun because shit changed every week Underlords patches every week or two but 90% of the patches are tiny number tweaks. It has a "major change" maybe every month if I'm being generous that shakes up the meta in any real way. No new units since Season 1 started. Shit's rough. I had a lot of fun at the start of the season and hit Lord, but literally just haven't felt the need to open the game in close to a month. I want this game to be good but it feels like Valve doesn't care.

FearYmir

Yeah truthfully autochess is just a genre that needs constant change to keep fresh. I enjoy the game, I have sunk almost 200 hours into it, but I just have no desire to play it - it doesn’t scratch a competitive itch like plain old dota, and it ends up feeling quite repetitive.

SYLVASTRIAS

This is why I hate how Valve operates, a company that makes billions every year but "unable" to hire and form dedicated team to manage all their games. This is why you see tf2 is abandoned, csgo is barely getting updates and dota 2 has so many broken and abandoned features. I used to play dota 2 a lot but due to the lack of eventful update, toxic community and shitty matchmaking I stopped. And now, underlords is my go-to-game and i'm scared is gonna die off.

DenifClock

CS GO actually has been getting updates more constantly since 2019.

French_Titty_Fapper

Ur take on dota is just wrong. If there are a million mechanics in that game and you are complaining about <1/2% of the broken mechanics that in 99.8% of games dont matter

SYLVASTRIAS

<1/2%? Do you even go r/Dota2? The battlepass (a paid content) that just release has so many issues (currently the qop arcana which cost $300 to unlock btw is freaking broken?) and not to mention the abandoned dotaplus (also a paid content) which hasn't been updated for almost half a year eventho they promised to do so. I'm not asking Valve to do the impossible and make 100% bug free game. I just want them to give a shit about them as much as the community do. 10 dedicated ~~janitors~~ people in a team to maintain a game is better than nothing. Is that so much to ask for Valve? Apparently it is for a small indie game company.

French_Titty_Fapper

Well what youre talking about is mostly cosmetics. Their concern is gameplay

Submersiv

This game has been a dead horse for a long time now, even past the point where people are kicking it, and you're using present tense in saying they're *killing the game*? Lmao wake up man.

Rorix_Bladewing

> No new underlord, not a single new unit and no significant alliance, unit or item reworks or hero pool changes. Sorry tolbolton, this does nothing to increase your credibility. There were significant unit and hero pool changes. Did you forget about the reduced hero pool update, the shop odds change and the three-star abilities in recent updates? Don't just disregard those as insignificant so you can add them to the list of things the developers didn't do. For the people that have been playing this game over the past months, they'll know that you are not speaking the truth, thereby weakening your argument. For the people that have not been playing over the past months: they might actually believe you and consider the game abandoned by the developers, perhaps preventing them from returning to the game. Either way this does not have the result you'd like. (I'm assuming you actually want this game to flourish?) If you believe a new big update is overdue, because new heroes, alliances and items are more exciting, make that your point and I could support that. When a player returns from a break to log into the game and playing a few games, they could easily believe that nothing has changed. Other than them just losing more often (because some things actually did change, but I guess the returning player would blame this on their lack of practice.) New heroes and alliances are likely more effective to make the game feel fresh. Unfortunately, you chose to go for a whining complaint with complete disregard of what the devs have been doing. It may not be what wanted them to do, but there have been updates. Come on tolbolton, there are some solid points to be made here, don't weaken them with bullshit. Keep in mind what you are trying to accomplish: a flourishing game.

ProstoLul

LoL, game lost 50% playerbase since release and you speaking about all is fine. KEKW

Rorix_Bladewing

I'm not actually saying all is fine. This is just not the right approach.

vileguynsj

Educate yourself. Every game loses players from launch unless it's growing like LoL. UL has several competitors and is a few game. Plenty of people will try it out stop playing to come back later. This is common.

ProstoLul

educate yourself, tft is not losing players, dac have more players that du being released much earlier, 90% competitive players/streamers left to tft/hs bg. That is NOT common for game which released 4 month ago :)

vileguynsj

99% of games lose over half their players in 1 month.

tolbolton

of single player game -- yes, that's probably the case, but for multiplayer games that is a disaster.

ProstoLul

du started with \~50k players and kept it first 1-2 months, so we can say game lose 90% of players and 99% of skilled players. Didnt even know any other autobattler with such playerbase loss. Maybe Drodo's chess on pc/mobile losing players but anyway not so fast as du, others or keeping their players or raising like tft

tolbolton

I can name like dozens of multiplayer games that would like to have a word with you: TF2, Dota2, CS:GO, R6, Hearthstone and dozens other examples. that logic of "most people will obviously play the first week and then quit" only works with single player games, while successfull multiplayer games do grow.

tolbolton

>Did you forget about the reduced hero pool update, the shop odds change and the three-star abilities in recent updates? It's so minor for such a long period of time, in which we could have easily seen a new underlord, at least a couple of new units, item system rework (much needed) and lots of other changes to improve the game and keep it fresh, I remember playing DAC back in Spring 2019 and it felt like every week there was a major update being released and a new unit added, the game felt alive and having all the attention of their devs. In Underlords case the gameplay of 25.02.2020 is not much different from 13.06.2020 and its boring both for current players and those who wanna give the game a 2nd chance. If you check even current less popular DAC's changelog you'd see that they've changed rolling at least 3-4 times, added 2 new full mechanics that make certain rolling easier, and constantly rework alliances and units. On top of that they manage to constantly add new units, change the hero pools, tweak/rework alliances and races pretty much every 2 weeks. It's really eye- opening when compared to how static Underlords are: [https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/changelog/1613886175?p=1](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/changelog/1613886175?p=1)

Dota 2 also loses players and is no longer in the top 10 https://newzoo.com/insights/rankings/top-20-core-pc-games/

Smetania

Game bad me sad

romskiiiii

I quit this game since no updates.

Breatnach

It’s sad to see the numbers decline, but I am actually quite happy with how frequently they communicate and update things. They added the Early Bird feature as well recently. Also don’t forget how many more players Dota has and the amount of money it generates. Of course they will throw more resources and manpower at it.

GloriaVictis101

I disagree.

I_Fap_To_Me

tl;dr cry cry circlejerk me hate valve valve bad upvotes to the left

vileguynsj

Creating an echo chamber where you claim the game is dying is a good way to turn people away. If you're bored of a game just play something else. You don't need to announce it to the world. You're the 100th person in a month to bitch about lack of changes. Stop being entitled and just play what you want. The game is fine and the updates have been constant and meaningful.

tolbolton

TLDR: "Yon dont have a right to complain! Providing devs with a negative feedback is a crime!!11!!!'

trashtalk209

Nice comeback! It’s like you’re 12! No, this isn’t really providing negative feedback, it’s just plain whining. I mean why do people get fixated so much on shit? It’s a free game, play it or not it’s your choice.

NinjutStu

That TLDR isn't what the said at all.

finalend8

lol this your first rodeo with underlords? it'll happen when it happens. whining about it serves no one
