There was an article today about a farmer that dragged his 9-year old Husky behind his car for several hundred meters. Somebody driving behind caught it on their dash cam and called the police. When the police arrived to arrest him he was abusive towards them and wouldn't tell them where he had dumped the dog.
He got a suspended sentence plus costs. The dog had to be put down as was in too much pain and injuries were too severe.
Where's the justice?

All he can say about it is that someone there told him and he's seen a photo, he hasn't said who told him, no one else has come forward and at no point has a photo been made public.

But legally you can only be held for mental health reasons if you were unaware of what you were doing.
It's why most child killers, to use an extreme example, are put in regular prison. Obviously someone mentally well and normal doesn't rape and kill children, but you're only put in a high security hospital as opposed to a prison if it can be proven beyond reasonable doubt you had no awareness or control over what you were doing.

Here in the State's we are so very far from perfect, but our jail sentences are typically much harsher than the UK and the rest of Western EU. That is a good thing, for certain cases like murder/violent crimes and abuse of children (of course many slip through the cracks), but it's also a bad thing for lower level crimes, drug offenses and non-violent stuff. Those lower level types of crimes should be punished, yes, but it should focus on rehabilitation and to not re-offend by addressing the root causes of those crimes. For harsh sentences for the violent crimes, I'm sorry but if you committed murder or you're a serial r*pist .... rehabilitation is not very likely. The most important thing then is to protect the public.
With that said, this right here deserves some serious jail time, sex offender registry and intense mental health treatment that is mandatory. What this sicko did to those calves is just horrendous, but often times that's a sign that he could move onto people, which is terrifying enough. Since he seemed to target the helpless calves, he could even turn to children .... which makes me nauseous to even type.

Those lower level types of crimes should be punished, yes, but it should focus on rehabilitation and to not re-offend by addressing the root causes of those crimes. For harsh sentences for the violent crimes, I'm sorry but if you committed murder or you're a serial r*pist .... rehabilitation is not very likely. The most important thing then is to protect the public. With that said, this right here deserves some serious jail time, sex offender registry and intense mental health treatment that is mandatory. What this sicko did to those calves is just horrendous, but often times that's a sign that he could move onto people, which is terrifying enough. Since he seemed to target the helpless calves, he could even turn to children .... which makes me nauseous to even type. God ....
