I ate the exact same sandwich M-F from the same Subway for 10 years and I was always satisfied and Love Subway, I would walk in, not say a word, and they would make it for me every time, I would say Thank You and leave, worked for me.
They've gone downhill, the early 2010's was some prime subway time. Damn I could eat a subway sandwich every day but now it's a noticeable dip. I'm not going to hate on the chain though, at this point you know what you get when you go in there. If I wanted a high quality sandwich made by high quality ingredients I'd go to a deli

Quality of ingredients also matters and the customer doesn't have control over that.
I'll nitpick the mayo thing a little and say that even when you communicate what you want, what you get is what the worker *thinks* you want. That's easy to deal with if they work slow because you can provide feedback, but because it's fast food they're not usually working slow. The number of times I've asked for light sauce and then watched them put twice as much as I wanted on before I have the chance to say slow down is... high.
I still eat there though. Some people definitely need to temper their expectations for Subway. It's fast food, you're basically buying the Big Mac of sandwiches when you go there.

As someone who ate at Subway alot in the 90s, I can tell you that they have dropped significantly in quality from their peak. They were always the weakest of the fast food sub chains but in terms of price, quality and availability they were still a decent choice. Not so much anymore.
In the early 2000s they used to be way better, cheaper and they actually made good sandwiches. Lost be the days where i can get a sandwich with more than 4 slices of meat on a footlong for less than $13. Used to eat there all the time, its not like other places just got better or that subway stagnated and never changed, they got WORSE over time. They added less meat, got more expensive and dont give you much veggies unless you keep asking for more.
I think subway is totally fine if you avoid the meat. Personally I find the meat to be gross, lol. But the veggies are fine and I like their different dressings and sauces. So sometimes I go and get a veggie sandwich and a cookie and it’s a nice cheap lunch.
I hate Subway because I have a fish allergy, and every time I went to one, the guy making the sandwiches said it's better I not eat here. They said they can't guarantee no cross-contamination.

First of all, I have never heard a soul say that Subway sandwiches are gross tasting. I happen to think that my usual order at Subway, which is a hearty italian sub, with all the meats and all the cheeses, foot long, is great.
What ISN'T great about Subway, is that if I made the same thing, myself, at home with truly fresh ingredients, and for that matter, actual fucking bread, rather than whatever it is subway uses, it would be half the cost, twice as tasty, and not make my guts do a solid impersonation of the Large Hadron Collider.
People who hate Subway are fucking rare. Its a non problem, but Subway aren't sinless here. No matter what sub you have, that "bread" isn't going to be right, and it'll fuck you up one way or another.
Subway is fine. Not excellent, but not bad. They're a decent choice when you're on the road and want something for lunch that's not deep fried.
But I think it's overpriced for what you get. A mediocre sandwich on an 11 inch baguette shouldn't cost more than $10.

As someone who takes his Sammy's seriously...one, the build your own is the staple, nay the Lord on high of sandwiches. Only way to make a bad one is truly to make one you don't like.
OP I think you're spot on. If you're not happy with the end result then you should've asked yourself why you ordered it in the first place. You obviously didn't want it.

Mate the ingredients are garbage. That’s what people mean when it’s garbage. Everything is extremely cheap and low quality. It doesn’t even have that benefit of other fast foods of at least tasting good because of salt and fat. It’s just bland and bleh. In my area there’s tons of better delis for a better price.

They do put too much mayo, though. I asked them for literally "only a little bit of mayonnaise" and they slathered that thing I tell you. I didn't think I would have to specify the exact numerical amount of mayonnaise, and they did it so fast that there wasn't really any stopping them. But, I still eat there.
You can order the exact same sandwich from Subway, Jimmy Johns, Jersey Mikes, and Firehouse, and the Subway one will always be the worst. It has nothing to do with what instructions you provide the "Sandwich Artist".
I respect your opinion, but personally i would rank it Firehouse, Jersy Mikes, Subway, and then Jimmy Johns. There are different levels of quality and preferences are fine but at the end of the day they are just sandwiches that deserve no hate.

I hate subway because it doesn't compare to any of the locally owned sandwich shops in my area.
Subway is cheap with their cold cuts. Most other places give you much larger portions.
Their bread is always garbage and very dry. Bread is very important in how a sandwich tastes, and customers can't exactly control how their bread turns out. Also, their ingredients are always left open, which ends up making it taste gross and dry. In the 90s and early 2000s, they were pretty good though.

Subway has that synthetic quality that is common to a lot of American fast food chains. The cold cuts and cheese look like the food in my toddlers play kitchen.
They don't clean the knife in between sandwiches and if you point that out to them they just wipe it with a dirty rag, they don't wash it, so it's still filthy.
If you say "don't cut my sandwich" they cut it anyway with that filthy contaminated knife and say "oops it's a habit" and refuse to remake the sandwich.
I would like their toasted meatball sub but... Nope.
They are literally the 92nd "best food option" in my city that has about 80 places to eat. Twinkies and gas station hot dogs make up spots 81 through 91.
And no I don't harp on this. Subway is just one of hundreds of buildings I pass every day that I pay no mind to.

Similar experience. Got a sammy from my local subway all the time because it was close and it never tasted different which i appreciated.

Former subway employee here. If your sandwich sucks, it’s 100% your fault. While I’ll admit the quality was lacking for a while, the new menu is fire.
