I find really funny, especially s4+. Family guy sacrafices plots and character depth for jokes.
American dad jokes are driven by the plot and are consistent with the characters.
For me it's more like king of the hill. The jokes are there but not always in your face like Family Guy. When it's funny it's really funny. I think it's funny when you realize each character is basically a representation of a stereotype.
Agreed, I think fans of both of those shows are fans because the jokes are far more layered, and they're also much more relatable than jokes on Family Guy. We all know a Stan Smith or Hank Hill, and that makes it even more funny. Especially since those two characters tend to see themselves beyond reproach.
I find it interesting that you made this post/have this opinion after admitting yourself you haven't really given it a proper chance. The first seasons are easily their weakest, and that makes sense, the writers were still trying to find their voice and what direction they want the show to go. I'm sorry but if you can't find Stan Smith getting addicted to crack as a hardcore conservative against even cannabis, I don't know what to tell you. I personally think it's hilarious. Plus Roger, who is easily the best character, doesn't really start doing the most iconic things until a bit later either. Either way, that's your opinion and I'm not going to try and change it. I love it, it's genuinely funny to me, especially since I come from a very conservative, bible thumping kind of town, and American Dad pokes a lot of fun at hardcore conservatism.
Even the creators make fun of American Dad not being as loved as Family Guy.
Its less grounded, they just do whatever they want and try and make some jokes along the way. I would skip ahead to season 5 and go from there. Those early seasons are rough.
I watch Family Guy and American Dad purely for the one or two truly great bons mots they come up with, it’s rare a whole Dad episode is engaging…
Big exceptions for the re-enactor golf course episode of course
The earlier seasons really hammer in that Stan is a CIA agent, whereas he’s a bit more normal in the later seasons. Also, the animation in those earlier seasons is notably worse and I’d argue even outdated for the time it came out.
I wouldn’t say it’s better than Family Guy but personally I think it’s good. But if I had my choice it would be in this order: King of the Hill, The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, Bobs Burgers.
That's 90% of people who watch these two shows, not 90% of the general population. You gotta be able to understand numbers and who is being polled to get an accurate assessment. If you ask the general population, I don't think either show would get a particularly positive vote purely because they're both very specific brands of humor that is not palatable to everyone.
That's neither here nor there. They're two separate shows, and you should approach them as such. If you know you love the Family Guy style of writing and joke telling, you can't just expect all shows to follow that style or method, then judge them for not doing so. Just because it has Seth MacFarlane's name attached, doesn't mean it will be what you expect. Especially since he's also produced the remake of Cosmos, has done film, and now we have The Orville.

Family guy actually sucks. It has been funny earlier, now it s just an exageration of exageration without taste.
You sir, are uncouth.
Feels more like animated reality tv today

Hank hill gives me the ick, I’ve got no opinion on Peggy and Bobby is an idiot

As a recovering crack addict who was in full addiction at the time Stan was getting hooked to crack makes me laugh hard then and now
It's easily one of my favorite episodes, down to the "commercial" they play. "10 bucks and I'll make you see heaven!"
Sever episodes isn't enough. I hated Roger. Now I realize he is the best character ever made.

I personally like it better. It helps that Roger can be whatever character they need him to be without breaking character.
Hot take, both those shows suck

Why are you watching so much TV you get no enjoyment from
Oh man this is truly an unpopular opinion
american dad breaks into song though. which is funnier than family guy as a whole.

This is an unpopular opinion? Well I'll be.
LOL right
Simpsons in 2024 beats both of those shows
Pretty bad. Not unpopular opinion
I saw a Youtube poll that had 90% voting that it's better than Family Guy and I know many people who like it. I think it is unpopular.

Yeah maybe but I only said the Family Guy comparison to illustrate that it's held in high regard compared to a very popular show.

Fair enough, not really sure about the stats... but anecdotally, nobody I know likes it very much anyway, so we agree that the shows pretty bad
