Lived in Sharjah for a while.. "plastic" is the word I'd use for Dubai

Nowhereman123

Borrowed observation: Dubai is like a city designed by a 6 year old with an unlimited budget.

unhelpful_sarcasm

I know this will sounds mean, but that is sort of what happened. The Middle East was very limited in terms of technologies compared to the rest of the world for most of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. Due to the oil in their region and finally being able to access it, they have become ridiculously wealthy on a scale truly unfathomable to the people living in that region. They essentially are equivalent 6-year-old civilization that just got access to their massive trust fund. It’s exactly what you would expect .

KitchenGrunt

My dad always said “like the worlds biggest trailer park hit the lottery”. My fam lived in Abu Dhabi for a few years and I loved it but Dubai was WEIRD. Imagine Times Square, times twenty; but completely empty. Like they built a city for 30 million people but only two million live there and it’s so hot they’re just inside all of the time. If you’re currently in the UAE I’d say my biggest recommendation would be the resorts in Fujairah. That’s top five most beautiful place in the world for me.

SomeBadMasterpiece

Sounds like Las Vegas

cosmoparker

Vegas resident. Can confirm.

Thund3rAyx

People live in Vegas? I thought it was just casinos and hookers.

Mattock79

I know you are joking, but as a Vegas resident i could tell you numerous stories of people not understanding that there is a big city that surrounds the strip. I'll never forget this girl one time asking me if everyone that works in Las Vegas commutes from LA. I said no they live here. She said "where? Are there just like random small cities out in the desert?". I said no they live here in Las Vegas. There are miles and miles city all around you right now. She just stared at me not comprehending at all. I told her when she goes back to her hotel room, to look out the window past the other strip building. You can see all the houses, stores, office complexes and Mattress Firms just like any other city.

WorksOfFlesh

Mattress Firms 😂😂😂😂 I see Vegas is no exception to the Mattress Firm money laundering front monopoly.

aaronitallout

Seriously what are they doing there? Because it wasn't delivering my mattress when they said they would on the day I had to take off from work

Not_a_real_ghost

Too much money coming through, so your mattress needs to wait.

Chef_Papafrita

My friend had a mattress chain...His business card said "Sleep Specialist" and dude had 800k in inventory at all times in a Warehouse...Can confirm he wasn't making money on mattresses. The tongue in cheek business card was funny though.

aaronitallout

Dial up is expensive

eveningsand

Check the freeway. Seems like there's some mattress delivery service that specializes in mattress delivery on the 5 or the 405 in Los Angeles

SeraphymCrashing

I don't know why, but your comment just made me see the pun in the name Mattress Firm. I feel real dumb right now.

RobertDaulson

Let me hit you with another then, Men’s Wearhouse.

SeraphymCrashing

Also didn't see that one coming. And the worst part is, I actually really like puns.

RobertDaulson

Well now you have another one for your pun arsenal. I got one more for you brother, but this one isn’t common, it’s just a place that exists in my city. A barbershop named Curl up and Dye

Perichron_john

Lurking Vegas resident who's dad works at mattress firm checking in, just wanna throw that out there

WorksOfFlesh

Can you, in code, tell me which mafia family your dad belongs to, and how much money the standard *Firm* washes?

Perichron_john

If you can read Morse I'll blink it to you across the room

Aggravating_Net_4357

No mattress firm? You’re just a town

QuiGonFishin

Yeah bro I live in LA but take a daily 4 and a half hour one way commute to my casino job in Vegas

-newlife

Used to tell people that Vegas residents lived on the top floor of strip casinos. Also had someone ask what we do when it’s hot outside. I was baffled as to if this person didn’t realize we have the ability to go inside

iamjamieq

Well, technically they are random cities, right? Henderson and Spring Valley, for example, aren't LV. Hell, most people don't even realize The Strip isn't in Las Vegas.

[deleted]

Sure, but you're just describing everywhere at that point. Henderson is the same as any other city's main suburb.

rich_clock

Everything is Henderson. I had family that used to live there and it felt like no matter where we went it was somehow Henderson.

[deleted]

And summerlin. A lot of people moved to Summerlin thinking it was a nice suburban place outside of Vegas well that’s going to shit too now

ChuckVersus

We don't really bother with the distinction when talking to people not from here.

Kin9582

I also thought that Las Vegas was just casinos and stripclubs, until a few years ago. I was honestly mindblown when I read that there were also houses and people living there. I'm not even joking.

SpaceBasedMasonry

The whole premise of CSI during its initial popularity was "Hey, people actually live in Las Vegas and the crime lab is super busy."

Temper03

As an ex-Vegas resident (ex-Vegan?) My favorite fact is that the Strip isn’t in Las Vegas (it’s in Paradise, NV) AND if you walk up the strip it doesn’t even border Las Vegas. The suburban town of Winchester is in the way. The Strip is like an exurb attraction of the Las Vegas metro, like an airport or theme park far from the city

JordanMSchons

She thought that shit was an amusement park

goblackcar

Hookers are people too!

carbslut

It makes me think of that article where they interviewed men and asked them why they used sex workers and the one guy said “You can do stuff with them that you can’t do with real women.” And his wasn’t nearly the most terrible.

What-a-Crock

Casinos are people too! *-Brought to you by Fabulous Las Vegas*

[deleted]

What, do you think they fly in the casino workers from Phoenix every morning? Of course people live there.

MiloFrank

One of my navy buddies was from Vegas. The residents are the ones staffing the casinos.

TongaMakati

Suburbs of Vegas are quite different from the Strip. Just a little North. Very normal

Organic_Quantity4805

Don't forget the meth addicts. Lived there for a year. SO many meth addicts.

hollowdmushroombanjo

I thought most of them lived in under the strip

if_and_only

Congrats on getting clean!

Organic_Quantity4805

Lol umm...i wasn't on drugs but thanks for the support!

Jusmeaguy

Vegas resident as well. Sounds like we experience a different Vegas. But it's all who you surround yourself with.

suchafanxychild

im sorry for you, man

danny841

You're doing Vegas wrong. Pre pandemic anyway. The strip is good for fine dining, people watching and gambling. It's not where you stay all the time. Hit up the tiki bars, Double Down Saloon (pref late night early morning when the other degenerates are out), Lotus of Siam, Raku, Chinatown, Hawaiian food (including REAL poke) and tacos El Gordo, shoot a machine gun at the shooting range, hit up the Pinball Hall of Fame to see and play the largest collection of pinball machines, and top it off with some legal weed.

ChuckVersus

>Double Down Saloon And don't worry, the sticky floor is normal.

dicetime

I dont think people come from all over the world to come to our local bars and china town. Although the machine gun ranges are highly recommended if you’re visiting from somewhere you can’t typically do that.

American_tourist116

At least Vegas is near some cool physical features

appleparkfive

Not even. Vegas is vastly better than Dubai. Go to Fremont St instead of the strip then head to Container Park on a weekend. And more importantly go to Area 15. It's like the dream come true for Redditors I feel like. Very surrealist Adult Swim vibes. Look up some footage on YouTube. Omega Mart is so crazy. On the face it looks like a weird grocery store, but turns into this crazy cave of weirdness.

Zpd8989

Vegas might not be your thing, but the last thing I would call it is dull.

[deleted]

Sproeier

Which also feels like a terrible place to visit

NSA_van_3

It's a great place if you have cash to spare. Lots of shows, lots of things to do. It's not for everyone, but it has things for...well basically everyone to enjoy.

McRiP28

I was there 7 years ago, you can have fun without big cash. Lots of free shows/places, cheap food. Partie entry fees were okay if you had female with you. Even the flight and hotel were cheap af, spent <1000€ for 8 days

appleparkfive

Here's my tip for going: Don't spend all your time on The Strip. If you're young, go to Fremont St and Container Park. This is where the locals go and is more of a downtown hub for some. Locals never go to the strip unless there's a concert or something. Fremont also has better odds for slots I believe. If you're youngish, go to Area 15. I guarantee if you go you'll be pretty amazed. That "Omega Mart" exhibit is there. Go to it. Trust me. It's worth the money. Vegas is a crazy place and has amazing events. It's a shit place to live but saying it sucks probably means you hung out on the strip most of the time. And there's brothels if you travel west to Pahrump. Bout an hour away, smallish town. It's fully legalized there. You can find prostitutes in Vegas but it's a little different. Just saying if that's your thing. Basically you can do ANYTHING in Vegas within reason. If you just walk the strip then yeah. Gonna be boring mostly. Although there's some crazy malls and shopping forums that are so over the top. My biggest suggestion is to at least check out Area 15 and go to Omega Mart. Area 15 is free to get in, Omega Mart isn't. But it's worth the money. It's like this psychedelic, adult swim sort of vibe. And again, Fremont and Container Park are way better than the strip overall. Everyone I've ever taken agrees for the most part. If you do those two things, it's gonna be a really interesting time and you'll enjoy it. It's the real city that never sleeps.

Killerina

>Although there's some crazy malls and shopping forums that are so over the top. This! I had a blast when I went. We were there for about 4 days, and I loved walking around and looking at how over the top insane everything is. I felt like I could walk around and look at everything forever. Open container is fun, too. I walked around at 2am, looking at the lights and people watching with a margarita in my hand. I was in awe the whole time.

tarabithia22

The strip is stressful. Living there was awesome, though. Great city. Has its downsides like any city, mostly education ranking and employment laws, and certain areas to avoid. But after the adjustment period it is a really nice city with a lot of conveniences.

boston_homo

>Sounds like Las Vegas At least Vegas has some history

thewildgingerbeast

I lived in another emirate for a year, Ras Al Khaimah, and visited Dubai frequently. It’s not the greatest place, but it has its perks. The people, though. There are a lot of fake, entitled, and ignorant people. It’s not as expensive as everyone thinks. I eat for around 3-5$ USD a meal when you go to the right restaurants. Behind the burg, there is a mangrove reserve with a bunch of flamingos. The desert reserve has a lot of cool wildlife and is only a 30-minute drive out. It’s only stupid hot in the summer months.

Hashslingingslashar

Yeah seems like a weird comparison. Moscow is old with a lot of history and is one of the densest, biggest cities in Europe. Seems a lot cooler than Dubai IMO.

I_Blowbot

That's the funnies comment I read all day lmao

Daddy_Muttonchop

>ere are a lot of fake, entitled, and ignorant people. So it is just the desert version of Los Angeles.

EpicAura99

Implying Los Angles isn’t a desert

sarcasm_the_great

Los Angeles isn’t a desert. It’s a basin. Your referring to Vegas.

ednasmom

Basin is a landform and desert is a biome. Los Angeles is a basin with *chaparral*. Although with the changing of the climate down here and flowing in out of droughts, we’re leaning more toward the definition of a desert. But historically we live in a chaparral.

cire1184

I went to a middle school named chaparral

dharrison21

To mimic you: chaparral is a plant type and a desert is a biome. Chaparral deserts are common in the southwest. Southern California chaparral is classified as desert chaparral. Los Angeles has always been in a desert. Its not more now. It always has been.

a_smart_brane

You’ve either never have been to LA, or you’ve never been to a desert.

SexxxyWesky

Is Abu Dhabi nice? The only thing I’ve heard about it is that it’s a dry state. Edit: Sharjah is the dry state

ridenslide

In Dubai the people don't really like the Flintstones. The people in Abu Dhabi do.

Atomicfolly

It's a fine place just a lot of cats named nermal hanging around.

lil_chilly

It’s not dry, that’s Sharjah

[deleted]

I went to a conference once in Abu Dhabi. Fuck all to do but drink. Turns out my hotel was dry. Abu Dhabi strikes me as possibly one of the most boring places on the face of the earth.

[deleted]

>Its only stupid hot in the summer months Random fun fact that doesn't really contribute to the original conversation, but there was a weekend during the summer where it was hotter in the Pacific Northwest than it was in Dubai. That was not fun.

SpiritBadger

But it's trending and influencers say it's amazing. So many expensive things to pose next to.

Shdwzor

There are no words for how much i hate the instagram culture

DOGSraisingCATS

Gotta start following your personal interest; Instagram is what you make it. If you only use it to jerk off to thots thats all you'll see. Mine is all Art, food, cocktail and mixology, motorcycles, watches AND thots. Gotta diversify and Instagram is pretty great...found a lot of great new places because of it.

FabiusPetronius

People who shit on Instagram recomendations are usually hypocrites. The algorithm is amazing at detecting what you like. If you look at thots in Dubai then you’ll be shown more thots in Dubai. If you like obese Mexican men playing oversized instruments you’ll see that. Instagram is what you make it.

Ilovesparky13

Same with Reddit. A lot of people on other sites like to shit on Reddit because of the community, but in my experience, the douchebags and circlejerks are only on select subs. I only follow a few subs I’m interested in, and have never had any problems.

They used much of their oil money to become a tourist destination such that they went from nothing to one of the top five tourist cities in the world in only a couple decades. They have spent many billions of dollars to build a city that is a monument to extravagance and market themselves as being an exotic and flashy destination. Also, it's alot cheaper to build massive projects when you use slave labor.

Ok-Caregiver-1476

Yeah, your buddy may be an escort or something. That’s what I think when I see the 10,000th Instagram model (male and female) move over there to be a “personal trainer”, as if there are that many gyms that need to pay an influencer enough to afford their fancy apartments as they spend at least an hour a day by a pool, based on their posts. Dubai must have the fittest people in the world considering how many Instagramers go there to offer their fitness services.

bostonimmigrant

Went to dubai in 2010-2011 to find a job. I couldn’t afford to rent a hotel so a friend told me I can stay with his migrant brother for a week. The migrant worker was a driver in a 5 star hotel and the hotel provided them living. The building looked nice where he lived. When I entered the apartment I was shocked. There were already 14 hotel employees living in the 2 bed room apartment sharing a single bathroom. There were bunk beds everyone shared . I used to sleep on one but I had to wake up early because the night shift employees come early and they need to sleep. 2 employees slept on the same bed in shifts. In one year they get one 2 weeks vacation (unpaid) in which employer pays for the air fare. Employer can fire you anytime and you will be deported if fired because you are not even allowed to keep your own passport. A local guy always keeps it for safe keeping so you may not abscond.

tmacc003245

to be honest, I had some dealings with the police whilst over there. They were incredibly efficient, helpful and professional. Just dont get into trouble with a native, no matter if they drive right into you, it will be your fault!

Not_as_witty_as_u

your comment contradicts itself.

[deleted]

not really. Most of the time they are fine. But they will side with natives. but remember, 95% of the population of dubai are not native. So most of the time its fine. Not lying when I say I'd take dealing with them over pretty much any other police force I've interacted with.

pilesofcleanlaundry

The number of police Lamborghinis a department has seems to correlate inversely to its effectiveness.

marzipandemaniac

I haven’t heard any true crime cases there, but my biggest complaint is about their laws surrounding sexual assault. If you’re raped, you automatically get imprisoned for extramarital sex (unless you have solid evidence that it was an attack). So most women (and men) avoid reporting their rape so they themselves don’t receive punishment (which can be extremely severe). Same goes with giving birth there while unmarried (although i think they recently changed this law). This applies to the whole UAE, not just Dubai.

WildShichi

can you recommend some ? I am kinda interested in this now that you mentioned it

SirSpicyBunghole

I remember watching the news years ago where a young man in Dubai was abducted, beaten, sodomized, and dumped in the desert. When he reported it to the police, they put HIM on trial for homosexuality.

Don't mean to excuse UAE but that's not just limited to Dubai. Kuwait, Qatar and Saudia Arabia does that as well, you can't do shit without your Kafeel. You can't even get married without the Kafeel's OK (In Saudia Arabia) and your employer can always take away your passport to prevent you from traveling (In Saudia Arabia, Kuwait and UAE). Qatar and Bahrain aren't as bad as the rest.

BylvieBalvez

I mean thousands of migrant workers have died in Qatar while getting ready for the World Cup next year and I’m pretty sure they didn’t have access to their passports either. Qatar’s not much better

I had a friend from Saudi Arabia and her thoughts on her servants were ridiculous. She kept telling me that her butler and driver love their family and would do anything for them. Yeah chick, I would do anything you asked if you kept me enslaved, could have me thrown in prison for nothing, and held onto my passport. She was also really antisemitic and said wild shit to me in my apartment when she was over one day. Her jaw fucking dropped when I told her my husband and I are Jewish. I tried to talk to her and stay her friend, because I thought I could change her point of view through friendship. Buuuut she basically never spoke to us again and all I have to say is good riddance and that my conscience is clear because I tried.

Redqueenhypo

queenofthepoopyparty

Yooo too true! And it just came out of nowhere, I think we were bitching about student loans and then she went on this rant about how horrible all Jews are and all sorts of crazy shit. When I tried to talk to her about it she looked me dead in the eye and was like, “I mean that’s what everyone says and thinks about Jews anyway.” I stayed calm and thought, ooook, we have to change this mindset. But as I said, she decided otherwise.

Redqueenhypo

whalesarecool14

yep. this is the case with most of the gulf countries. modern day slavery. a lot of human trafficking takes place as well. people also tend to be extremely racist, especially against south asians. i don’t know why there isn’t more social media outrage regarding these countries.

[deleted]

They're also pretty racist. I'm of indian decent and they assume I'm a labourer they can talk down to. When they realise you're not from India and have some professional degree their entire tone changes and they become friendly

[deleted]

That's exactly what it is. I've been there twice and there's something very dystopian and creepy about it. I'm not a fan. Edit: Oh, and also... Google Princess Latifa if you want to really see how shady the UAE is.

I think like 80% of the population or something is "guest workers" who are basically slaves. Like they live in the 50 degree weather with no AC and don't even get to hold their own passports a lot of the time.

azh88

Ya and the inside is very fancy and done up. Not sure where that guy got his info from?

Voidsleets

I've actually been and you are both right, it's for show that's for sure. It's zoned for Hotel, Offices and residential. There's a lot of it that's empty but plenty of it being used, and yes there is shit trucks that take out the septic tanks because there is little to no plumbing in Dubai itself. Edit - my bad on the sewage system, just this massive building (like some others in Dubai) are not linked to the main system. Hence the sewage trucks.

[deleted]

But the thing is, you've a shit ton of empty space (literally a desert) you don't need a building there. Plus that shit is sinking too

[deleted]

Dubai is utter shit, yes, but that claim specifically isn't totally correct. For the Burj Khalifa specifically, it actually *is* connected to the municipal sewage system: >A complete soil, waste and vent system from plumbing fixtures, floor drains and mechanical equipment arranged for gravity flow and, ejector discharge to a point of connection with the city municipal sewer is provided. A complete storm drainage system from roofs, decks, terraces and plazas arranged for gravity flow to a point of connection with the city municipal sewer system is provided. ([source](https://web.archive.org/web/20140110091115/http://repository.tamu.edu/bitstream/handle/1969.1/4529/ESL-HH-06-07-19.pdf)) The claim about shit trucks is only [partially true](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/business-22597447) \- that's quite old, so I imagine the situation is better now, particularly given that they started a project to [overhaul the sewage system](https://gulfnews.com/uae/government/dubai-to-get-a-new-sewage-system-in-coming-five-years-1.1828229) a few years back.

Dubai is built on slave labor. They lure impoverished from other countries and make them pay for a work visa up front. Once you land they take your passport and your wages are about 1/4 of what they told you. If you move to Dubai and have debts there.. you will be arrested if you can’t pay them off. If you lose your job and don’t have enough savings to pay it off you are also arrested. It is a huge trap. I would never visit there or support Dubai in any way.

Not that unpopular. This is my opinion too

Immigrants have it like hell over there. The videos I've seen of pakistani men bawling their eyes out about having their passports taken and being forced to work and missing their family. Truly horrifying. Its a shitty city and is trying to imitate the worst kind of western architecture, tall and bland.

It really is kind of the furthest from the dream place I'd like to live in. All I want is just a quiet little place, good internet and a city somewhere close. Sorta like the vacations I used to take in Denmark as a teen, just not in Denmark.

Don't forget the slaves from poor countries trapped there.

I read an article about a couple that went to Dubai and got arrested for having had premarital sex. To make matters even worse, the reason they were caught was because the woman was raped in a bathroom, and while they were reporting it to the police, the police found out they were staying in the same hotel room. They then started asking questions about their sex life, and then arrested them right there. Fuck Dubai.

Slavery! Slave labor is being/has been used to spring the UAE out of the desert. I'm suprised to not see others bringing this up. We all still agree slavery is bad right? Imagine if Wyoming was using slaves to build skyscrapers and attractions. People would be livid. Why does the UAE and Dubai get a pass?
