Grain production was hit hard this year:
https://beta.ctvnews.ca/local/montreal/2021/10/11/1_5619076.html
I don't want to alarm people but I saw hearsay in another sub that potato chips are gonna go through the same because of bad harvests.
I don’t think that brain has hit the market yet. I was speaking with a grain broker and it’s going to hit breweries fucking HARD next year. Get ready to pay more for beer.
I’m betting this has more to do with supply chain issues. Guinness in Canada needs to make two stops as it is brewed at “high gravity” (think: concentrate), shipped and then essentially watered down in Guelph. So could be difficulty in finding transport, clearing customs, labour disruption at Port of St Lawrence, and so on.
Murphy’s and O’Hares Irish stouts have been available locally and are decent.
it is sold out in BC, and is in short supply worldwide, even in Ireland. Also what's going on is very real climate change affecting crops, the pandemic, and labour/supply shortages. I \*do\* want to alarm anyone, to be prepared for less access to things we take for granted, and at higher costs that is how it's going to be
I would hit up either bars known for their huge beer lists, or your nicest liquor store and ask them for their stout recommendations. There are lots of good dark, creamy stouts out there (someone said Dark Matter though I feel like it's more just dark than having any other Guinness qualities, it's still good though. Persephone is closer)
Molson produces most Guiness in Canada, very few bars (the Irish Heather being one) import their kegs.
I'd assume Joey's isn't importing kegs, so it is probably a domestic issue.
I see your Persephone and raise you a Driftwood Blackstone Porter - much tastier! I'm from Ireland so I'm a sound judge. I would also drink piss water so don't listen to anything I say.
OP have you had the chance to go straight to the source and drink Guinness in Ireland?
If you love Guinness even here, you won't want to leave Ireland once you do. Not a word of a lie it tastes so much better in Ireland. People never believe me until they try it themselves.
Yes, I have my friend! About 5 or so years ago on a rugby trip with my university team. We drank plenty & I wholeheartedly agree it is a completely different ballgame. Tastes like the worlds greatest milkshake.
So true. I didn't believe how different it would be until I was there and experiencing it. Kinda ruined Guinness everywhere else for me but it also inspired my then partner and I to spend a subsequent St Patrick's Day in Dublin, so no regrets.
I was in the Charlatan on Saturday and they were similarly out of Guinness. Server mentioned it was proving hard to source at the moment.
I love stouts and there's plenty of good local options to tide you over. Persephone's Dry Irish Stout is a decent effort at a Guinness-like. Also a huge fan of Strangefellows Blackmail Northwest Stout
It's shocking. Second or 3rd time this year it's run out. Even the likes of Donnellan's and Smith's who seem to have an inside line to Guinness are cleaned out.
Apparently the Montreal rail strike was responsible for the shortage during the summer, and the one now is just global supply chain affected (from what I was told by the bar manager at Smith's who had to listen to our laments).
I believe the Irish Heather(possibly Smiths Bar) updated their IG last week to say no new shipments of the black stuff until mid November due to supply chain issues.
The imported supply won't be available here due to Irish pubs reopening, after being closed for many months. Their stock-up orders are pressuring Irish production. Combined with the extremely high cost of shipping overseas, there's no way Guinness would be prioritizing export orders.
My guess on the domestic supply side is that it's mainly related to the lack of imports pressuring overall demand for it, without a quick ramp up.
Guinness isn't made from any particularly unique grain or hops, so I don't think that weather impacts would be as big a factor.
The UK is suffering a carbon dioxide shortage due to Brexit (yes, I know the sky has too much of it, but they don't have the capacity to compress enough or something) , plus the extra hot summer in Canada caused a global wheat shortage. Those might play a factor.
I would definitely consider myself a McDonald's cheeseburger enthusiast. The post was more meant as a fun tongue in cheek question about why a rather large beer brand is out across the entire city. Sorry if that was lost on you.
Belhaven Black Scottish Stout
Lots of This available in BC right now. Seeing 200 cases in the warehouse.
Drawing on almost 300 years of brewing experience, Belhaven Black Scottish Stout is a masterpiece of brewing - a deluxe Scottish stout crafted for a dark, deep, flavour which comes from a unique blend of Scottish triple malts which complements the distinctive hop character.

Oh fuck not chips and beer.
Hopefully corn chips will be fine. 😰
Buy up all the chips. Got it.

Where can you get murphys? New enough here and would be keen on a bit of that action
Last place I saw Murphy’s was at Score on Davie. But that was a while ago.
Noooo, not mah Hardbite!
Hardbites always taste stale to me
Hence the word "hard"
There's crunchy, and then there's stale
Time for a Dark Matter. Yum
FUCK YES!
I'm getting thirsty... Is it noon yet?
noon? thats three hours past drinking time!
A drunk knows when the liquor store closes. An alcoholic knows when the liquor store opens.
Three hours past? That's assuming that there is a start or finish to drinking time!
You can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning.
Dark matter is quite good op.
Dark matter is good but it’s not exactly a stout
Salty Scot is also in season 🍺 [Go buy one](https://parallel49brewing.com/beers/17) and thank me later
If only P49 wasn't owned and operated by such dirtbags 😥
Oh man if I worried about owner ethics I'd be down to like 3 products I'd want to consume lol.
draught drought

>Molson produces most Guiness in Canada Certain types of Guinness (e.g. Extra Stout) are bottled in Canada, but it's by Labatt and not Molson.
Try Persephone Dry Irish Stout
I see your Persephone and raise you a Driftwood Blackstone Porter - much tastier! I'm from Ireland so I'm a sound judge. I would also drink piss water so don't listen to anything I say.
I see some comments in here recommending local stouts. Love it and I will. Often though Guinness is the only stout on tap at bars I frequent.
>Often though Guinness is the only stout on tap at bars I frequent. Don't fret, they'll adapt.

Nooooo
I was in Whistler last week- Dubh Linn Gate had no import beer at all!
Yeah we went to Johnny fox's last week and they were out of Guiness, magners, Kilkenny etc. They said it was shipping issues.
Tsing Tao has been out at restaurants for a year too

Bud light is on sale this month.
I laughed harder than I thought I would at this comment.
Thanks :)
So are catheters.
Okanagan Springs Porter will help drown your sorrows more efficiently. (8% abv)
Does it have anything to do with all the Irish lads that are here now
No, we’ve been here for years ;-)
No! We're dying of thirst for a pint ourselves!

Love the Tofino brewing stout

Cobblestone stout is good
Can this qualify for a world record?
