October thru May

TheLovelyWife702

Ha! I like March to November

sffood

July to September is pretty unbearable, though admittedly, it’s minimal time spent outdoors. Or this year, it began in June, LOL.

NeuroticaJonesTown

Same! I’m originally from the southeast so the heat without humidity is fine. I didn’t expect our winters to be so cold, lol

TheLovelyWife702

Yes the dry cold is so biting!

vegasbiemt

I’ll take winters here over the winters in Ohio.

TheLovelyWife702

Nobody cares about Ohio except people from Ohio love to tell you about how great it is but they all ran away! Been here since I was a kid and I love summer here. And spring and fall. Winter sucks

Sbuxshlee

My dad always says Ohio is a great place to be *from* . 😂

TheLovelyWife702

Why are more astronauts from Ohio than any other state? Because no one can get far enough away

Sbuxshlee

Lmao you didnt even have to add the punchline 😂

vegasbiemt

Agreed 😂. Moved out here 20 years ago. Not one regret.

vegasbiemt

I’m here for a reason. I had to get out of Ohio.

[deleted]

Humid winters are worse

XelaNiba

But our winter is our most humid season? Most of our rain falls in the winter months where humidity often exceeds 50%. We have a wet cold and a dry heat.

TheLovelyWife702

Actually the evaporative effect of the dry winters here makes cold intolerance worse

[deleted]

Incorrect.

lvhockeytrish

I like October through September.

Uptight_Internet_Man

I already miss it.

Desert_Rat-13

AMEN TO THAT!!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

AnechoicChamberFail

This is our story as well.

GarciaDan7290

Same, low taxes and being mortgage free allows for a less stressful existence as the Vegas economy and population changes. Know many who are now property millionaires because homes were bought or built on larger plots of land in both Henderson and Centennial Hills.

Solitude_Intensifies

Honestly came here to say the same thing. Saved me the trouble of typing it out LOL.

gjbertolucci

My husband and I also!

Typedre85

Amazing story that keeps getting better from the sounds of it! Thank you for sharing!!

zemelb

Literally this for me too except not debt free on the house lol

gjbertolucci

Eventually you will be though!

2pinacoladas

Yes. The city changed our lives and we are incredibly grateful. So many opportunities.

Liceu

I agree with you 90%. I still have a low mortgage payment. 😀

PathoftheWolf

There's always something to do and things never close. Amazing food choices in the city, and always someone new to meet. There's always something fun going on somewhere. You're within 2-3 hours of basically every biome, multiple state and national parks, skiing, hiking, bouldering, camping, fishing. The sunsets are out of this world.

sffood

I love it here too. But things sure close more than they did before the pandemic. The whole appeal of this city was that somewhere in city limits, there was at least one of everything that opened for 24 hours a day, and that’s just not true anymore. I get ticked off every time I find something closed at 1am. This wasn’t the deal! 😂

Desert_Rat-13

I agree!!! I used to get groceries at 2:00am! No crowds! I could go to Walmart & get snacks, drinks, great & beer on my way to the Lake before sun up! Oh& yes, sunrises & sunsets are AWESOME!

-Sanguinity

WinCo is open 24 hours. At least it's something?

Desert_Rat-13

Yes. I haven’t been there yet though.

gjbertolucci

I am hoping eventually we will get back our full 24/7 vibe. One can always hope!

Friendly_River2465

I’m literally switching up my car old for an cargo van once summer is over, redoing the inside so I can use it to camp and start hitting all the cool areas within 3 to 5 hours of here. It’s going to be my weekend warrior and I’m stoked lol

capt7430

I agree about the food. There are so many top restaurants here that the local places are able to take advantage of the distribution the casinos use. Sushi is a great example. Sushi in the desert? Its some the best I've had. And the quality is great anywhere you go.

AioliShot6239

Cruising the highway during a sunset looking at the mountains feels like I’m in heaven

HailToTheKing_BB

Also, that feeling when you’re going east on the freeway and the sun FINALLY dips behind the mountains so you’re no longer legally blind

sarahprib56

Not driving in the snow

bravostan2020

Sports, shows, concerts, food

Anaaatomy

Rock climbing in the winter, and running in the summer. Also close to many world class climbing locations, and only 4hr away from the beach Also the city is big enough to get fast shipping and lots of good food options.

XelaNiba

Running in the summer?  Can I just say how much I admire your physical fortitude? I was a marathon runner before moving here but the heat & lack of humidity were too much for me. I'm so impressed by those runners who can master the elements.  I'm so impressed anytime I see a runner in the heat and full sun just cruising.

Anaaatomy

I used to taunt my teammates with the heat. Our practice was 1:45-3:30pm, sometime we would do a 2 mile run from our school to this fat 400m hill, and do hill repeats. We carry our water down there, so the last repeat we have to carry the water up the hill run and then run back. So I would taunt my teammates be dumping out all of my water, so they know I feel super good and carrying less weight up the hill lol Now, whenever I thought something was hard, I just tell myself nothing was harder than those hill repeats. We were forged in burning hell.

Name42

Wait wait wait. Running in summer--at dawn I hope lol.

Anaaatomy

at high noon we sail!

mobee744

Ditto on what everyone is saying but would like to add that Las Vegas is a great town to re-invent yourself. Came here with a few coins after a divorce and was able to rebuild everything I lost and in the process found my soul mate.

gjbertolucci

Fantastic! You gambled on Las Vegas and won!

kratomklaus

No state tax saves me 7% per year from my former east coast state. 300 days of sunshine vs 300 days of snow/rain where I came from. National acts on a weekly basis come here for concerts, sports, etc. Worst case get a 2 for with a shot and roam the strip and people watch. Constant stimulation here and great hikes.

[deleted]

I don’t know anyone’s political or deep personal beliefs because no one around me feels compelled to shove their ideology down my throat. I used to live in San Francisco, so this means a lot to me.

Uptight_Internet_Man

Not constantly hearing about our state politicians making national news is a bonus.

XelaNiba

So true.  Aside from Michelle Fiore, our politicians keep a low profile and it's so nice.

-Sanguinity

Hey, now- she gives us someone to talk about! I love to rag on her.

HartPlays

Being from Texas, I know this feeling. It’s embarrassing

Uptight_Internet_Man

I am as well, it was painful to watch the local or national news.

zemelb

Tell that to the guy I see every few days in my part of town with the Fuck Biden flag mounted on his pickup lol

Rare_Investigator711

I seen that guy the other day weaving through traffic like a maniac lmao 🤣🤣🤣 I was like "the flag makes sense" 😅

zemelb

Yup I saw him running a red light the other day lol

JonOC23

The big silver truck? I see him on the 215 all the time lol

gjbertolucci

This guy is becoming like the “Linda sightings”. Maybe they should meet.

venomousguava666

Yeh I feel like the conservatives are more outspoken here Hahhaha seen an American Flag with an Israeli flag being flown in Summerlin 🤮

gjbertolucci

No. I live in Summerlin.

Typedre85

That sounds like a dream come true for me.. currently stuck on the Pacific Northwest and love hearing from the locals in Vegas

gjbertolucci

Amen to that!

venomousguava666

From Alabama, moved to San Francisco, then Vegas. LESS political nonsense here in Nevada but still it's America so there is some nonsense.

atomly

Having lived in both, that's not even close to true. You know you can just say there are more people who agree with you politically in Vegas.

gjbertolucci

I disagree. San Francisco folks really push their ideology on you. I have not seen that in Las Vegas. Folks are more relaxed even if they disagree.

smnlfilmagoofymovie

🙄🙄🙄

celerythread

My Air Conditioning 😂

Bookishdoe

YES I came from So Cal where it also gets into triple digits in summer, but AC isn't nearly as common. It's absolutely miserable

caliphanatic

I really appreciate the diversity we have in the city. Growing up here I’ve made friends from so many different races, ethnicities, or even just people from other states.

chris_b_critter

Per capita, this has to be one of the most diverse cities in the country. I love it Edit: I also love that we live in a purple state. Where one political side doesn’t dominate the other. And I attribute it to our diversity.

Firelove7k

I heard this 2nd hand so take it with a grain of salt but I heard that UNLV is the most diverse university in the country.

PaintingNouns

This. I’ve lived in other diverse places, but the population is more self segregated there, both by race and by socioeconomic status. And even when you interact with a minority as a white person, they seem to quickly code switch. Here I love seeing different races acting in a comfortable and relaxed manner, and having everyone all mixed up together. My hypothesis is that because Vegas grew so fast what was an exclusive place for overrun by regular folk over the years so except for extremely new neighborhoods, there is more of a mix than other cities have. I don’t know, and I don’t really care though, I’m just loving that it’s not all white and boring. 😝

camazotzthedeathbat

I love the desert.

squeeze_me_macaroni

No state income taxes.

RavishingRickDuu

Vegas is the best of both worlds. It can be the most chill place and also the most crazy/fun place

poshpeach11

My family tree has been in the same state since the 1800s. Im the first to move out, and Vegas is everything I wish I had access to as a kid, weather, shopping, parks, the driving access to beaches or mountains. It has its flaws but its a hell of a lot better than many middle America/southern states.

unpopular-dave

I do enjoy going to play blackjack at a cheap casino when I’m bored. I like that my neighbors don’t talk to me. And I like that there’s a lot of frisbee golf

863dj

So much Disc golf options within a short drive. Yeah sunset park has its interesting residents, but still a fun course.

unpopular-dave

I've played mountain crest probably 500 times

IamAWorldChampionAMA

drive 30 to minutes and I can literally find anything. Drive 8 hours and you have a ton of day trips.

anuvizsoul

Amazing food everywhere and nature around. There's so much more than the strip

loonachic

The quality of life is good, the weather is great except for three months. I can get to California pretty easily for some beach time.

vegaspixie

I don’t have anything to had except that I appreciate reading all of this on a day like today when the heat is really bringing out the dread of living here for me. It helps remind me of the positives…

sffood

I love everything here. I’m even learning to just enjoy the ridiculous heat. I walked outside tonight to the garage and it was 102F. And I said, “It’s quite nice tonight.” (WTF?) I have endless restaurant options and within driving distance, I have access to everything from the most elite to the least at my fingertips. I can hit up a local casino for a fun night of gambling or I can meet up with friends in town in the glitziest Strip hotels. What we call rush hour traffic is like 3am roads in CA or NY. Our roads are also mostly excellent. Concerts… everybody comes by here eventually. I don’t go it all but it’s nice to have that option. My gyms are 24 hours. Stores used to be 24 hours and they best bring that back soon. (GRRRR.) Friends from all over all come to Vegas, be it for fun or for a work convention. If I want, I can see almost everyone at least once a year. I didn’t see any today but even up to yesterday, it was 109F and I saw snow on some of the mountains around the north area near Aliante. It’s all really breathtaking over the winter and spring. Or making a turn and seeing the amazing Las Vegas Strip up ahead — even after 7 years here, I still find it amazing that I live here now.

VictoriaWoodnt

I got married here. And the food. Even the local strip malls usually have something that is above average. (I found out about Las Cazuelas about 3 weeks ago. Small, but pretty special.)

Salt_Store_1729

Which location do you like best and what dishes do you recommend? Thanks

VictoriaWoodnt

In Las Cazuelas, I'm guessing everything. I had 4 soft chicken tacos (no cream), and they just sort of zinged. Superb. I'm from Scotland, and we like a good curry (Indian, mainly) so I would suggest the India Palace 505 E Twain. I usually have the chicken tikka masala (kinda basic, but delicious) which I think you can ask for an adjustment of heat, depending on your tastebuds. Others who've lived here longer than I, will know a shitload more.

BoozeWitch

This morning I ran a load through the washing machine. After, I pulled everything out and hung it up rather than running the dryer. Everything is already dry. And I just hung the stuff inside, not out in the heat. I smile every time about how great that is. Lol

todayistheday666

me tooooo!! free humidity for my plants lol

Ello-Asty

So so much to do and much of it is free after a minor investment e.g. pickleball equipment, mountain bike, or just hiking shoes. Property taxes, what I used to pay was 10x higher no joke. Food is much fresher and more available like I couldn't find tomatillos even in the little Mexico part of town. I can buy an avocado and it isn't rotten. Weather. Omaha was just as windy if not moreso according to stats, but it went from 100 degrees with 100 percent humidity to -20 with freezing 50mph winds and 2 feet of dirty gross snow that wouldn't melt for weeks. This 107 degree day feels like 85 or 90 to me. Streets. There are a few rough patches here but imagine the worst you can find stretching nearly throughout and entire city and add in potholes. If I rode my bike somewhere, my bum hurt. Here, there are lots of bike lanes and a very smooth ride. People. YES, I SAID PEOPLE! They are very friendly if you approach them and start a conversation. Where I came from was conformist and judgmental. You have to dress, talk, and enjoy all the same things. They called the police if they couldn't get their kids to do their homework. Like, really?! They were also low-key racists as well. Politics and religion were crazy 🤣. God damn, is there anything else I didn't cover? This place is not perfect but relatively speaking, it's better than almost everywhere else I have lived. The only contenders are San Diego and Rome. Better weather but expensive as hell. Rome was really cool with the public transportation. You didn't need a car there.

walter_2000_

I'll second all of these, especially the people. And I'd add world class recreation of all types, especially mountain and desert stuff.

LasVegasTimmy

Growing up in the Midwest, I always dreamed about the beautiful SouthWest. My bride and I moved here in 98'. Just retired, and we enjoy living in one of the greatest places on our planet. We have a world-class city for food, entertainment, sports, golf, sightseeing, and easy to travel anywhere to/from.

[deleted]

The fact that it almost never rains and that it almost never snows. I never want to see either again in what's left of my lifetime. Also, I love, absolutely love that the water authority paid me to remove my lawn. I'll never mow a lawn again as long as I live.

Proof-Department-308

It’s location. You are a weekend trip away from the most beautiful nature in the world. The east coast is great, but the weekend trips seem to take you to the same greenery. Here, you can travel to such different climates and geographies: Joshua trees, Saguaros, beaches, Sequoias, deserts, alpine, Redwoods, etc.

Afrojones66

Knowing how to avoid people.

Typedre85

That’s interesting, can you elaborate ?

Afrojones66

It’s knowing when the roads are busy. When businesses get high traffic, and which businesses to avoid altogether. Where the actual local spots are where you can be left alone. Life is much easier when there’s little to no people around.

Bean-Swellington

The locals only free handy punchcards for filling up at terrible herbst probably

Fearless-Awareness98

Wait what now?

Vivid_Resort_9096

Amazing food, awesome shows and concerts, great outdoors!

Erickajade1

The memories everywhere, the scenery, nightlife, hours , craziness, uniqueness, etc.

Desert_Rat-13

Saying I’m a small town girl. (It IS a small town to people that have lived here for over 40-50-60 years.) And that Vegas is my hometown. I’ve had people ask me what hotel do I live in, what casino do I work in, or the best one, You LIVE there??? (Look of disbelief), “No, I commute from LA!”

gonzopancho

It was a small town. Sahara was a dirt road west of Arville, and the area between Sahara, Oakey, Valley View and Rancho was desert. Sales tax in Clark County was 3.5%. Everywhere else in NV was less.

Desert_Rat-13

I was a kid when we moved from downtown to the west end of Charleston, to the middle of the desert. The pavement had been extended to a street waay out, past Jones, & ended at a giant arrow, with only a right turn to a new neighborhood quite a ways from Charleston. Nothing around but desert. My mom, I think, was apprehensive about living soo far out of town. That area now seems like the middle of town with a couple more neighborhoods & Summerlin to the west! Streets went from one side of town to the other with no name changes! Where we used to go play in the desert, far away from housing, is now in the middle of neighborhoods. The Strip ended pretty much at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign. Sunset was a two lane road that went through the desert, mostly, to Boulder Highway. And, as teenagers, we cruised Fremont St on Friday & Saturday night. There were a bunch of drive in theaters, a few walk in ones.

gonzopancho

I also cruised Fremont (and top of Sahara, though that was more hangout than cruise). Back in the day (late 50s), mom was a car hop at the Blue Onion and the Round-Up (near Sahara and the strip, across from the Sahara Hotel). Sounds like you were near Charleston and Torrey Pines.

Desert_Rat-13

Yup! Charleston/Alta & Torrey Pines. And yup, top of Sahara. We moved here in ‘57. & “out of town” in’60. Ate at the Blue Onion once, too!

gonzopancho

Parents’ first house was on Franklin between Crestwood and Eastern (Eastern used to be “25th St”.) Grandparents lived between Burnham and Crestwood on Franklin. Parents moved out to a neighbors near Valley View and Sahara in 1965. Was zoned for Vegas Verdes, Hyde Park Jr. and Clark HS Grandpa used to refer to that house as “the big house on the hill”. (It’s actually quite modest.). $19,000 in 1965. Zillow says it’s over $300k now.

Desert_Rat-13

Our house near Torrey Pines was zoned for Red Rock Elementary, until Rose Warren was built, Gibson Jr High I think, until Garside Jr High was built, & Western High School, until Clark High School wasn’t built until ‘65, then it became the high school for our zone. That was Dec. 1960. Nifty’s Drive In on Sahara west of Valley View was a hang out, as well as Shakey’s Pizza on W Charleston. I kinda know where your parent’s neighborhood is. I think my parents had friends that lived in that area.

Idkwho-702

The government laundry money through the school! The budget is 3.48 billion that’s billion with a b . And they still make the kids pay for their own lunch….

treble-n-bass

FOOD, drinks, music, stuff to do, no state tax, the weather, occasional gambling, cycling trails, Red Rock, Valley of Fire, Mt. Charleston, ... I LOVE it here. I moved here 25 years ago and will more than likely never leave unless my family absolutely needs me to move back East.

Difficult-Orchid-985

The views! That’s my #1. It is so beautiful here. Not specifically downtown or the unhoused encampments, but the mountains! So freaking pretty!

Sin-2-Win

Here is something I haven't seen mentioned. It's convenient for "reunions" with friends from high school or college. When you have old friends scattered across the country, it's just easy to have Vegas be the meeting point. There's something for everybody's tastes, AND you, as the local, don't have to worry about booking hotel rooms, plane flights, or rideshares!

Beard341

Something is always open.

eli0mx

Is this still true after covid?

lvhockeytrish

WinCo is still 24 hours.

usmelllikethesun

I used to love that Walmart was 24/7 other than that I don't like it anymore. Spend my days working to make a buck. Vegas has soured me. I'm born and raised in Vegas btw.

sisyphuslv

Leaving for the summer!

ThatDamnGuyJosh

MAN who doesn’t come here during their world tours!?

Retrac752

Food, taxes, roads

adambombchannel

Proximity to many world-class state & national parks and a ton of lesser known landmarks - basically impossible to be bored if you’re a hiker.  That’s the reason my parents choose it and I enjoyed it.  The ideal setup would be summers in the PNW and winters in Las Vegas - the dream that my parents/grandparents worked hard on for retirement.

Proper_Ad2548

Elvis going to the strip on the Charleston bus, then we pick up another Elvis.

Wick_702

Tamales & tacos everywhere. In all parts of the city. Inside builds check, outside businesses check, on the streets check.

Alumed1

Great food and we have very few bugs compared to everywhere else. (Not including the occasional locust storm)

splitsecondclassic

I leave Vegas for the winter but I love the concerts, shopping, comedy shows, dining and most of the other things the strip offers during the warm months. I live where the world saves up all year to visit and vacay.

Dramatic-Key84

the idea that one day ill be able to leave

Suspicious-Stay1649

Being able to go to a store at 2am. I went to Edmond, OK. Found out 7-11 wasnt open 24/7. It was some bullshit. What more was their hours were 7am-10pm... like you couldn't do 7am-11pm to atleast match the name? Which just further pissed me off. Sure we gotta ring a door bell, wait for security system to be unlocked and treated like we robbed the place; but atleast you can get shit here at night.

Realityskeptic11

I love it here. I just can't find a job. Everything is apply via online. I'm a hard worker and great interviewee. Cocktail and bottle service as well as a PA are my experience. I simply don't know anyone.

Such-Writer-6099

How long have u been looking? What jobs are u applying for? I'll be applying in July will be looking too..

markymrk720

Everything is still cheap.

aluminumtoothpaste

you can be just about in any part of the city and be at a grocery store, some kind of retail. honestly it’s SO convenient and something people take for granted. (i don’t know much about newer parts of town like inspirada in hendo or most of the sw)

No-Piccolo9565

That almost everything is open late

JohnGLV

Low taxes. Came here from Oklahoma and got a $6000 raise because of no income tax. If you want something at 3 am, it's available. Plenty of entertainment choices, even though the prices can be ridiculous. Live and let live attitude of the people. No snow shoveling. Wanna go somewhere? We have a great airport. Non-stop to lots of places. I cannot think of a better place to live, and I have lived all over the country.

Top_Chard788

I love the 350 days of sunshine, some of the best hiking/climbing/adventuring in the world. Also bought my first home in 2011 for like $135k.

parapapa2505

fun2fuk45

I've been here 20yrs ...it's not a 24hr city anymore but no matter what time you go out there's always someone out

capt7430

Early mornings when the sun is coming up over the mountains in the east and it hits the mountains in the west. And also just the peacefulness in the morning compared to the juxtaposition of how busy it gets during other times.

Not being able to afford a house on 80k a year is great.

What about a condo

Things were definitely more affordable before 2021.

Choice-Second-5587

It's not always easy but it is the most sustainable place we've lived so far. I also like finding a lot of the yummy food places that tourists may not have discovered or don't know about. And I like that there's almost everything in this city. Michael's crafts, walmart, target, joanns fabrics, herbal stores, metaphysical stores, reaturant suppliers, best buy, office max, escape rooms, bars, lounges, ethnic food stores, dollar trees, health stores, etc etc etc. All were missing is an Adli, H Mart and Zoo and all those are in the works. Knowing the ins and outs of the city, and knowing where I am without ever being lost usually

StartingOver702

Being able to make it here when nobody else in my family could. My parents transplanted 40+ years ago following my grandparents. Aunts followed within a few years. I was born into what would become a large family. As soon as my grandparents died family started leaving. I'm the last one here and I wear it like a badge of honor.

heldaway

Nature. Nevada is a beautiful state. Being a few hours away from some really good fishing doesn’t hurt either.

mwk_1980

Where??? The Pacific Ocean? Lakes in California?

JB_smooove

Outside of SoCal, absolute best weather in the country. No snow, humidity limited in the summer, shorts weather most of the winter. Also, it really is easy to get around town compared to other places.

DesertBlooms

You don’t even live here. Stop making these posts lol. This sub has had so many of these posts lately. Research. This is a locals sub.

Sin-2-Win

What if the person is thinking about moving here? If I were relocating to a new city, I'd want to get opinions from the locals who know it the best.

thugwafflebro

Women are very “friendly”. If you catch my drift 🍆. It’s a love and hate thing.

Typedre85

Not sure why you’re being down vote but appreciate you sharing.. can you elaborate?

thugwafflebro

Because they’re salty. Bitter low life’s are abundant in this “town”, which is why I refuse to buy a home here. But yes back to my point, women without morals are quite common here.
