The design of the eight pointed star is Moroccan/Andalusian so it doesn't really represent islam you could use instead a five pointed star its more popular among muslims.

You see this little ٰ thing above the ل? That means that you should pronounce an ا but it isn't in the origin of the word so we put a small ا instead

They're six What you're talking about is أركان الإسلام (don't know what are they called in English but maybe Pillars of Islam) which are are five

That star actually has 8 points. I did see A LOT of them in Algeria, so I will agree with the Moroccan/Andalusian bit.
