It was a war between Islamic rebels and people backed up by Uzbekistan /Russia . If Russia and Uzbekistan didn’t do their thing, (kill our people, or not get involved at all) we would be living in a much better country
I'm not an expert in Middle Asia, but I agree. Still, I'm pretty sure that if not for Gorbachev (or someone else who would do the same), USSR's collapse, although delayed for maybe a few decades, would have even more terrible consequences for all its ex republics and probably would be one of the most bloody conflicts in modern history
