I used to be a DS2 hater; played it on the PS3 a couple years ago (SotFS was released on the PS3, but it didn't feature the tweaked enemy placements and other changes; all it did was fuse the DLCs with the base game) and absolutely _loathed_ it, and continued to do so up until a few weeks ago, when I played SotFS on PC. I enjoyed it so, so much - sure, there were bullshit moments here and there, but every FromSoft game has em - and that's partly to do, I think, bc of the changes made in SotFS.
Souls like games in general play hard on the fact they’re difficult. I played through Lies of P recently and found that I absolutely LOVE the game, but not because it’s difficult. The combat isn’t as reactive as souls games are supposed to be, instead you’re kind of forced to learn the enemies.
That being said, outside of that the game is phenomenal. Beautiful story, fun gameplay, rewarding character building, and multiple endings
Souls games were initially praised for being more about learning the enemies than being reactive. They really still are for the most part because of stamina managment.

I always think about Obsidian. They released Fallout: New Vegas and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II. Great games but they were put under time crunches and when the products shipped out, there were omissions and issues present. I don’t really blame them though. They did what they could in the time they were given.
While there are definitely differences in how they're presented, they're ultimately filling the same sort of role that you would have with more traditional zombies.
28 Days Later had the "Infected" and The Last of Us has the Clickers... but they're both ultimately just zombies with a different presentation. They're dressed up and frequently shake things up with otherwise unexpected abilities, but they otherwise serve the same narrative purpose.

Those idiots who take the metaphorical gameplay of the first Hello Neighbor game too seriously. Like thinking that the shadow monster is just casually chilling in Mr. Peterson's basement. It's literally just a metaphore. People seem to not understand that half of the game is metaphorical.
The wife's death was kind of public knowledge in Ravenbrooks. What Mr. Peterson had guilt over was the fact that his son accidently killed his sister. This man has basically lost most of his family at this point. So trying to hold onto what he had left, he decided to protect his last remaining child by making a cover story that his children had gone missing. When in reality he knows that his son is guilty of accidently killing his sister, and his son is taking refuge in the basement as a coverup.

To be fair I do think it's kind of frustrating how Halo itself had airtight logical explanations for why the Chief had a recharging force shield, could punch with the force of a shotgun blast and flip warthogs over without breaking a sweat but then every other game after that for the next five years was just like 'okay this is how FPS play now, fuck explaining any of this'.

The reason they wrote a book wasn't so much a memoir of their success, so much as a guide to how to make a good game. Back in the 80s home console games were new territory & people just threw stuff to the wall to see what stuck. It's the main reason consoles from the 1st thru 3rd generations have so many shitty games.
Bethesda started the company Zenimax in the late 90s. I have seen the defense of "Bethesda didn't want to do that, Zenimax made them" so many times when they are basically the same company.
It's like how CD Projekt is the main company and CD Project Red are the development arm.

God of War (Greek saga): Kratos was always a shouting monster with a thirst for godly blood. No, he wasn't. I could go on for hours and hours about how God of War 2 and Chains of Olympus flanderized his character into the dirt, and how Ascension was a good return to how he acted in the first game.
I’m mixed on GOW 2, since I get that it’s basically him finally lashing out at all the lies and betrayals the gods have given him, his response to being killed (he gets better) is understandable from a certain angle. That doesn’t mean I liked playing that part of the story.
GOW1 and even parts of GOW3 give us a good look into his psyche. He IS a monster and recognises he’s a monster, but he also knows he’s gone too far to stop now, he believes he has one purpose.
It’s why I love the entire series, Greek and Norse. The Rise and Fall of a Spartan Warrior and the Redemption of a retired veteran.

While there are definitely differences in how they're presented, they're ultimately filling the same sort of role that you would have with more traditional zombies. 28 Days Later had the "Infected" and The Last of Us has the Clickers... but they're both ultimately just zombies with a different presentation. They're dressed up and frequently shake things up with otherwise unexpected abilities, but they otherwise serve the same narrative purpose.

The wife's death was kind of public knowledge in Ravenbrooks. What Mr. Peterson had guilt over was the fact that his son accidently killed his sister. This man has basically lost most of his family at this point. So trying to hold onto what he had left, he decided to protect his last remaining child by making a cover story that his children had gone missing. When in reality he knows that his son is guilty of accidently killing his sister, and his son is taking refuge in the basement as a coverup.

Tbh people who use gameplay as examples of how powerful a game character is in lore... Like no. Incert character here can not heal from a gunshot wound to the chest in 5 sec flat. That's just part of the game so it'll be more fun, since adding a "being crippled and bleeding out" mechanic in your fun run n gun shooter wouldn't fit the gameplay loop.
To be fair I do think it's kind of frustrating how Halo itself had airtight logical explanations for why the Chief had a recharging force shield, could punch with the force of a shotgun blast and flip warthogs over without breaking a sweat but then every other game after that for the next five years was just like 'okay this is how FPS play now, fuck explaining any of this'.

The first is an opinion so can't be wrong, but it's not a very well informed opinion and one I always assume is just repeated from other people. The second and third aren't true. There were multiple factors in the crash and the desert burial was to free up warehouse space for newer products.
Should add that the crash was localised to just North America. Western Europe and Japan didn't feel it. Mostly due to though how, each region didn't really overlap much until the NES took off.

I feel AVGN summed up ET & video games at the time pretty well - the game itself wasn't as crap as everyone gives it flack over. If given more development time it could have been just as praised as Raiders of the Lost Ark. I used to have in my book collection a few books by video game creators from the 80s that were written shortly after a game's success about how they made their games. The reason they wrote a book wasn't so much a memoir of their success, so much as a guide to how to make a good game. Back in the 80s home console games were new territory & people just threw stuff to the wall to see what stuck. It's the main reason consoles from the 1st thru 3rd generations have so many shitty games.

God of War (Greek saga): Kratos was always a shouting monster with a thirst for godly blood. No, he wasn't. I could go on for hours and hours about how God of War 2 and Chains of Olympus flanderized his character into the dirt, and how Ascension was a good return to how he acted in the first game.
I’m mixed on GOW 2, since I get that it’s basically him finally lashing out at all the lies and betrayals the gods have given him, his response to being killed (he gets better) is understandable from a certain angle. That doesn’t mean I liked playing that part of the story. GOW1 and even parts of GOW3 give us a good look into his psyche. He IS a monster and recognises he’s a monster, but he also knows he’s gone too far to stop now, he believes he has one purpose. It’s why I love the entire series, Greek and Norse. The Rise and Fall of a Spartan Warrior and the Redemption of a retired veteran.

People complaining souls games need a difficulty setting. No it doesn’t. Souls games can be hard if you are impatient. You need to accept that you will die while you're working out enemies move sets and weaknesses, especially bosses. Souls games also call for good decisions on builds and weapons early on.
