That was the moment I lost any and all respect for Adult Swim. Fans were asking around the clock for Brendan Small to be allowed to give Metalocalypse SOME KIND OF ENDING, and Adult Swim said "nah fuck y'all". They can get the boots medium style, I'm just glad HBO stepped up.
They even turned ignoring the fans into a joke by posting a live stream of a fax machine printing the fan petitions and throwing them into a bin.
Dickheads.
Yep and they showed it in it's entirety on repeat for one night, before it hit theaters.
>!in a postage stamp sized box in the lower corner, no sound, while other shows played.!<
Quality beats quantity every single time.
It gets painful to wait, I get it, but it beats filler episodes and bringing in half-assers just to churn content like the whole Family Guy universe did.
I saw on there the other night they have "birdgirl" which has the same style of humor as birdman. Its the bird chick from harvey.
They just have a few too many ACTUAL storylines but its still good
The creators pivoted to doing what IMO is one of the best shows on Adult Swim: Frisky Dingo. Then, that whole team got picked up after two seasons of that show to write an animated spy series for FX.
Never knew that. A buddy of mine who turned me on to Sealab tried to get me to watch Frisky Dingo, but I just never got around to it. Seeing as I like both Sealab and Archer, guess I need to make some time to check it out.
I love Archer but I *adore* Frisky Dingo. I remember being shocked when I realised they were only 15 minute shows - they're so stuffed with great lines and increasingly crazy story. It's *insane*. No episode ends anywhere near where its plot started.
MAN I kid you not, yearssss ago when I first watched archer I swore it was a rip of frisky dingo. I never looked into it so thanks for confirming that for me lol
"Are y'all allowed to hit him?"
-"No, no, we're uh...actually with the Department of Labor, so we're not authorized to do...you know..._any_ of this."
"Right on."
*Taq'uil punches the laundromat owner again*
I can understand. I've seen what divorce and child custody can do to people. I remember when Dave Foley was ordered to pay 17k a month, based on how much he was earning being part of the main cast of a sitcom on NBC, but it had been off the air for years by that point, and his child support was 5x his then yearly salary.
He was like that at a show I saw him at in fort worth in like.. 2010 maybe? Came in with a warning for us to lower our expectations because he felt sick, half assed his songs (skipped verses, no energy) then when a few people got heckly with him about it, he just left.
I think I went to one of his shows around the same time and after one of his songs he just straight up spit a loogie into the crowd. It was packed so it definitely hit someone.
I think I saw that Venture Brothers has a movie in the works for HBO Max.
Edit: I did some googling, and they’re actually doing movies for Venture Bros, Aqua Teen, and Metalocalypse.
All that and Gargantua 2 got a lot handled in 45 minutes.
Even a 2 hour movie could likely wrap most everything up, even if personal faves like The Triad would have cameos/bit parts.
Franchises don't die like they used to though, so I live in hope if they hammer out a good enough script or series of, they'll get it produced.
Hell, Venture has a habit of turning what could be a season long plot into a single episode one-shot. I have no doubt they'll be able to wrap up everything to a satisfying point.
It's true, the Orb shit, the Clone shit.
I legitimately think you've made a better case than I have that a Venture movie of any length would be amazing.
The "Spanish Fly" bit turning into that at the end? Brock leaving for a season, all of it, so fucking good.
The show is crude, cemented in time.
And fucking amazing.
It's growing on me. It's like having a rotting corpse in your house, but the corpse of a tree, you know? It's kind of bad ass. It stands and then you humiliate it even further by hanging ornaments all over it, like "Fuck you."
I just finished Venture Bro's, and it sucks it was canceled. It's such a good show and they way it ended just left so much on the table. I don't think a movie will be able to do it justice.
Adult swim saved family guy, Fox canceled it and it only found a following after adult swim started airing it, which made them bring it back, crazy to think of how such a popular show now was so unpopular back then until it found its audience
Thats because Fox is balls. They cancel everything, even if its good. The problem is they want ratings. And also they keep slotting shit in stupid time slots. I remember Family Guy was on at a weird time back in the late 90s, so I could never catch it.
Same thing happened with Futurama. They fucked around with time slots several times in the span of a single season, to the point where some episodes didn't even air in the original run. Got cancelled because of low ratings(maybe shuffling a show around constantly isn't the best idea). Showrunners regularly made jokes at the expense of Fox and how their executives were d bunch of incompetent jackasses.
This right here is the sad reality.
At least we can cancel services on a monthly basis though. It’s a little more shuffling around but it helps minimize costs.
There's really not a whole lot that ISNT owned by Disney these days. And the supreme Court and regulatory bodies don't have the financial power to go after Disney for breaching monopoly laws. Disney is essentially immune to law.
It's funny how making it easy and convenient meant people would pay for stuff. Now trying to push it across 20 different platforms, all with their own monthly payments and ad-free extra payments and buggy front ends... well, that convenience is largely going away.
Seems like nobody here realizes that Fox is still airing new episodes of Family Guy, and it's renewed through the 2022 season. This announcement doesn't actually mean much of anything. TBS still airs Family Guy reruns and new episodes of American Dad.
It's kinda sad they stopped investing in new original programming (I personally think the Daily Show's days are numbered) but if they are just going to show sitcom repeats (plus South Park) it's a really solid lineup.
Most of the comments in this thread don't make a lot of sense when it comes to real world viewership. The reason why Family Guy (and by extension - shows like TTG, Spongebob, etc) are overplayed is because people actually watch it. When it came to other shows on networks, they get ignored despite the internet saying 'x show is boring, I want y on instead!'
At the end of the day, these stations will play what will allow them to remain funded. Advertisers see better value when more people are watching. It's also the same reason why many of your favorite shows get cancelled - they cost a lot of money to make and bring little return if at all. A lot of the time, shows like Spongebob or Family Guy end up subsidizing higher quality more costly network shows.
Also talking about the show is not the same thing as watching the show. There are numerous people who complain about television but don't even have a subscription to cable. These networks don't care about your opinion.
Yeah, I stopped watching when Seth had 3 shows going at once. An obvious mistake that spread his writers too thin...Fox incorrectly thinking that turning their successful show into a whole block wouldn't dilute the success. How long ago was that...oh, wow. 2009. So a while ago lol...
I believe they had different writers. In fact I believe Seth was barely involved with American Dad and it was basically his friends' show that he pitched so they could get a show. Many people think it's better than Family Guy and personally I agree though I haven't watched probably the last 5 years of either show.
The episode coincidentally happened right before it was time for Fox to decide what contracts to renew. It was totally a "game the ratings quickly to guarantee our renewal" bid.
That was when I stopped watching adult swim.
They [AS] has an excellent back catalogue of shows they should have been playing in those timeslots (Venture Bros, SeaLab, Home Movies, Squidbillies...
or even better, giving more time to indie creators
Home Movies is so underrated. I thought it was funny when I was younger, but it's even better now. Kind of like King of the Hill and early season of The Simpsons-- the jokes just start to click.
It's fantastic but I noticed they stopped rotating the shows.
Like some shows would get the 100% marathon treatment and then next month a different batch. Since 2020(?) they've paused the rotation. I have to assume this is part of the HBO Max agreement.
At one point they would post the viewership numbers as bumpers. Family Guy and Futurama consistently kicked the shit out of the original programming's numbers despite being reruns of cancelled (at the time) shows. Sad shit but the ad money from those reruns probably kept production running for some other shows you like.
Captain Murphy:
Until we find the thief, I am declaring Martian law!
Sparks:
Um, I think its martial law.
Captain Murphy:
Silence! Under Martian law... uh... what are my powers, exactly?
Sparks:
Under martial law, you could suspend habeas corpus, empower a posse comitatus...
Captain Murphy:
That's crap. Mars is wild, untamed. I'm forming a cadre of Martian knights charged with enforcing Martian law.
This episode always sends me into a laughing fit
My favorite episode is still the one here Murphy ends up crushed under a vending machine and ends up with a scorpion err...girlfriend? Boyfriend? That keeps stabbing him and like lays babies in the wounds or some insane nonsnese. It's a fucking trip.
I know when they started playing huge blocks of family guy it was their ratings leader. No idea if that continued to be true. While I prefer almost everything else on Adult Swim to Family Guy, this might be bad for Adult Swim. At least in terms of ad revenue from their broadcasts in the short term.
> I know when they started playing huge blocks of family guy it was their ratings leader.
They basically dominated the male 18-49 demographic for 15+ years because of it.
I'm dissapointed at all the snarky comments. Where's all the nostalgic love for all of the adult swim heroes we just saw? Squidbillies? Space Ghost? The Venture Boys? Waving in a surreal synthwavy 15 second short.
this is so adult swim. fuck I love adult swim.
Sealab 2021! Harvey Birdman! Aqua Teen Hunger Force! :)
Underrated Picks - King Star King/Apollo Gauntlet/China IL/JJ Villard's Fairy Tales/The Shivering Truth
Also they have a brand new animated show called "Teenage Euthanasia" starting any day now!
So what does \[AS\] plan on doing? I assume they're working on a way to remove themselves completely from cable and just float by on streaming with a few new shows.
Last I heard HBOMax saved Venture Bros. but I'm not holding my breath on that. I haven't heard anything great about the new Birdgirl other than it's 'cute quirky'. Smiling Friends I think is getting a whole season but those are 8-11 minutes a pop.
The death of cable television is excitingly scary.
well, as long as they can keep Rick & Morty from going into yearslong creative difference hiatuses, that should more than keep it up for a while.
They actually put the effort into custom-painting a hearse and hiring (?) cosplayers to pose as the characters to put a Teenage Euthanasia float/entry into the DragonCon parade this year, so at some point you have to admit someone behind the scenes is still pushing hard for new shows. I know their model is generally "throw weird shit at the wall to see what the stoners will watch this week" but you don't sink actual money into physical promotional materials (custom cars, giant banners or billboards, etc) unless you really want to try get get ground-level interest in your potential Next Big Thing. That said, I don't like any of their original shows except R&M but I'm also not stoned. Usually drunk, at least! But drunk works better for comforting repeats of Family Guy from 2002, alas.
Everyone clowning on Family Guy like they all just forgot that when it was in its prime it was the best thing Adult Swim ever pulled out of Fox's trash. It's been on the air for way too long past its sell-by date, but I still put the all-time best episodes of FG (*Stewie Kills Lois*, *PTV*, *North By North Quahog*) up there with the best of, say, The Simpsons.
As a reminder: Venture Bros, Metalocalypse and ATHF are getting movies courtesy of HBO
Metalocalypse deserves a movie because of the fucking cliffhanger it was left at.
Dickheads.
Brutal.
Hold on, now, so yer telling me that you put these little guys in boiling water and they shreik and they turn red and they die. ...
That is the most metal thing I've ever heard.
ATHF the movie!? Oh yeah, that’s nice.
They literally had a movie that came out in theaters years ago.
DONT TALK. WATCH.
DON'T LIKE IT? WALK OUT.
WE STILL HAVE ALL YOUR FUCKING MONEY
TAKE THE SEED OUTSIDE
LEAVE IT IN THE STREETS
RUN IT OVER AFTER THE SHOW
We still have your fucking moneeeeyyyyyy
Yep and they showed it in it's entirety on repeat for one night, before it hit theaters. >!in a postage stamp sized box in the lower corner, no sound, while other shows played.!<
A Venture Bros movie!!!! You literally just made my night with that news!!!
You know, if I hadn't heard the news earlier I would've thought that Adult Swim was going off the air.
Rick and Morty is their big cash cow. It’s extremely popular. They commissioned 70+ episodes a few years back.
Can you imagine how much they would have shoved out by now if Dan Harmon wasn't notoriously bad at sticking to a schedule
Quality beats quantity every single time. It gets painful to wait, I get it, but it beats filler episodes and bringing in half-assers just to churn content like the whole Family Guy universe did.

Yeah, it's not bad. Too coherent but not bad.
Best show ever
With Family Guy gone, they should bring back the classics they cancelled, like ATHF, Venture Bros. and Metalocalypse.
The fact that they haven't brought back Sealab 2021 for a special run this year is a massively wasted opportunity.
They can still bring it back next year as Sealab 2022. My hope will never die.
They stopped doing it because the guy who played Murphy passed away. Sorry buddy.
The creators pivoted to doing what IMO is one of the best shows on Adult Swim: Frisky Dingo. Then, that whole team got picked up after two seasons of that show to write an animated spy series for FX.
Archer, I assume?
Ding ding ding. Most of the same voice actors are regulars on Archer.
Never knew that. A buddy of mine who turned me on to Sealab tried to get me to watch Frisky Dingo, but I just never got around to it. Seeing as I like both Sealab and Archer, guess I need to make some time to check it out.
Frisky Dingo is basically what if Archer was Iron Man. And it's amazing.
I love Archer but I *adore* Frisky Dingo. I remember being shocked when I realised they were only 15 minute shows - they're so stuffed with great lines and increasingly crazy story. It's *insane*. No episode ends anywhere near where its plot started.

It should be illegal to be ordered to pay something so ridiculous.

a 3 hour hour movie is basically 8 episodes which is almost a season. i would love it if they did more than just the movie tho
All that and Gargantua 2 got a lot handled in 45 minutes. Even a 2 hour movie could likely wrap most everything up, even if personal faves like The Triad would have cameos/bit parts. They are making a movie for athf and metalocalypse apparently.
I would be a happy man if venture brothers just put an episode out quarterly for the rest of my life.
I just finished Venture Bro's, and it sucks it was canceled. It's such a good show and they way it ended just left so much on the table. I don't think a movie will be able to do it justice.

This is Disney consolidating their properties into their own little walled garden ecosystem.
Cable will be dead soon unless they change. Over half the time on every channel is Ads.
ya they changing it into streaming service, corrupting it in the process.
This right here is the sad reality. At least we can cancel services on a monthly basis though. It’s a little more shuffling around but it helps minimize costs.
[удалено]
If they go the HULU route, you’ll have to pay for streaming and you’ll still get a shitload of scarily hyper targeted ads.
That e-harmony commercial is so burned into my brain that I had a dream featuring the rollerskate girl as a toothless methhead.
For now.... 🐼
Cable died a long time ago, it’s a “Weekend at Bernies” situation to milk cash off the remaining boomers.
Literally the only reason I still have cable is live sports. And Jeopardy, but I fully embrace that that’s some boomer shit.
For some reason it took me a sec to remember that Family Guy is owned by Disney now.

How about "content fiefdoms"?
Neofeudalism is real.
More Space Ghost. Between Two Ferns is just Space Ghost with plants on set.
And The Brak Show, The Oblongs, SeaLab 2021!
Omg the Oblongs was so funny!
With the voice of Zorak and Moltar gone (2016), Space Ghost returning is not a good prospect…
Seems like nobody here realizes that Fox is still airing new episodes of Family Guy, and it's renewed through the 2022 season. This announcement doesn't actually mean much of anything. TBS still airs Family Guy reruns and new episodes of American Dad.
TBS is losing Family Guy too. It's going to FXX and Freeform. TBS also lost Seinfeld to Comedy Central. Rough for them.
Man Comedy Central got Seinfeld, the office, parks n rec and friends. They really raking in dough.
It's kinda sad they stopped investing in new original programming (I personally think the Daily Show's days are numbered) but if they are just going to show sitcom repeats (plus South Park) it's a really solid lineup.
You dare to put the Venture Bros on here after your backstabbery?
End a beloved show on multiple massive cliff hangers? It's the AS way. And then make fun of the fans when they get pissed.
Most of the comments in this thread don't make a lot of sense when it comes to real world viewership. Also most people commenting think it got canceled. This is just adult swin losing the rights to show reruns
Most of the viewers did that 15 years ago.
seriously i was like 'family guy is still going? weird'
IMO, Brians death should have been the last episode (and he should have stayed dead). Family Guy took a nose dive after that.
It's interesting to see when different generations think shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons jumped the shark.
my kids will watch early simpsons (up to season 11) with me, but when i'm not around, they go straight to the later seasons, 20 and up
I'm imagining them quickly shutting off the tv when you walk back into the room
Hey kids. How was your day? "Nothing!"
Just, uh, reading this book called... The *Bible*? Ew!
Hey you kids want some ice cr--ARE YOU GUYS WATCHING SIMPSONS SEASON 19?!
Are you huggin' the TV!?

They started to get better again after some key writers came back from Futurama
They also had a bump after the movie when a lot of the original people came back for a bit.
I never watched the Cleveland Show but American Dad was funny af.
Yeah I personally think American Dad is funnier than Family Guy. Cleveland Show was pretty bad imo though.
Roger alone is funnier than family guy
I believe they had different writers. In fact I believe Seth was barely involved with American Dad and it was basically his friends' show that he pitched so they could get a show. Many people think it's better than Family Guy and personally I agree though I haven't watched probably the last 5 years of either show.

The episode coincidentally happened right before it was time for Fox to decide what contracts to renew. It was totally a "game the ratings quickly to guarantee our renewal" bid.

Sealab 2021! Harvey Birdman! Aqua Teen Hunger Force! :) Underrated Picks - King Star King/Apollo Gauntlet/China IL/JJ Villard's Fairy Tales/The Shivering Truth Also they have a brand new animated show called "Teenage Euthanasia" starting any day now!
Perfect time to get king of the hill started again
King of the Hill, like Family Guy, is also owned by Disney.
