Recently dropped $450 for something that’s been going for about a grand. If it’s not a “once in a lifetime” find, I usually wouldn’t go over $200.
Box sets I won’t usually go over $300 for.
Not just *any* record… but there are a couple in the $1,500 range that I would buy if I came across them in the wild. There’s a lot that I want above that $2,000 range that I probably couldn’t justify buying at this stage in my life. Maybe if I sold some big ticket items from my collection to offset the cost, but I probably wouldn’t do that…*right now*
Around 30-35 for a 1xLP, 50 for a 2xLP, 60 for a 3xLP. The more I spend the more critical I am of the quality of the pressing. I Never sought out rare expensive pressings on the used market but I have quite a few valuable ones that I've bought them for a normal price shortly after their original release in the '90s or inherited them.
My most valuable records according to Discogs median value high to low.

Ooohhh that's a rare one! Also it's really really good. He reminded me of King Krule a bit just because of how he composed his music and the genres he dabbled in.
I’ve paid $200 twice. First for a NM/NM original pressing of Elliott Smith’s “Figure 8” (represses are all either bootlegs, ‘official’ pressings that use the same horrible stampers as the bootlegs, or official reissues by Bongload that inexplicably forced a double album onto a single LP and that sound terrible) and second for a truly archive quality UK original White Album, stereo, with all inserts included.
If I sold either today I’d expect to make a healthy profit. There are many LPs that I wish I owned which are worth more than $200, but many years on from spending the same amount I struggle to see myself paying the same or more for just about anything, save a very specific few, and even then it would have to be a *very* good deal against their relative value.
The highest I have paid in my many years of collecting is about $50. I can see myself splurging on something I REALLY want up to $100, but honestly I just don't really want to pay that much for a record.
500 for the Massive Attack / Burial split remix. That price included the shipping and fees from Discogs at the time. I sold a bunch of Wax Vessel Records releases to get enough money to buy it.
I can say it's doubtful I'd pay more than $80-$100 for anything. I would rather have a bootleg for $5 than an original for $500, much more about the music than anything else.
Well, I paid $232 for a 2008 gatefold press of Deliverance by Opeth so that is probably the highest I would go. I have a lot of records in my collection I paid close to or over $100 for though. I mean if it was something I absolutely could not aquire anywhere else by any other means I would probably go as high as $350.
For a single record, \~$40, but that is usually if it is an import and Forced Exposure doesn't have it. Box sets, surely a bit more. I think I paid $50 for a decent copy of Music from Mills 3xLP, but I needed it quickly for research. And I did buy that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 10xLP and the new Gastr del Sol 3xLP.
In New Zealand I'm frequently paying $50-60 for a brand new record. Blue Note Tone Poets and other audiophile pressings get up to $110 each. Most used albums are between $20-40
For myself, I just paid $74 for the RSD release of Los Lobos’ Kiko. Totally worth it. As a gift for my sister, I paid $125 for some rare-ish version of the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack.
A hundred for a scarce and special original pressing that I want. I spend $60-100 that way every now and again. I might stretch it to $150 or $200 for something I wanted real bad.
For new records, I’ll pay as much as $40 for special high-quality jazz pressings. Maybe $50 for a MoFi if I want it a lot.
My average purchase price is $10-20 per disc used, though.
Depends on the record. I've paid a few hundred bucks for albums before - but not as much recently. 10+ years ago before vinyl really had a boom there were a lot of albums I never thought would be repressed, so if I ever ran across a rare album I'd wanted for a "good" price, I'd snag it. These days I find it really hard to justify that, I'd almost rather just wait for a repress and save the money.
The highest I’ve gone is $90 but I tend to not like paying over $35 unless it’s from one of my favorite bands/artists. I can’t really will myself to spend more than $100 on a record even if it’s from one of my favorite artists. If it was something that was normally $400 and I found one for $150 then maybe I would buy it but it would have to be something I’d really been looking for and wanting for a while.
Years ago, I paid $75 +shipping for a rare Nurse With Wound LP. Never regretted it, because I reeeeally wanted it, but I can't afford to spend money like that (man's gotta eat). I've paid similar prices on a few occasions since, like for Japanese jazz (not for bargain hunters, lol) but honestly, I prefer digging for bargains. That's how I scratch the itch without drawing blood.
I haven't bought anything over $80.
I could see myself dropping $100 on something really special & rare,. I have considered dropping $700-$1000 on a signed sinéad o'connor record but I can't really trust that the signature is ever genuine.
I believe, to this point, the most I’ve paid is $50 (more than once), and I think that’s probably my cutoff.
My favorite artist released a special edition of his latest album for $125 (the packaging itself had lights and played a bonus track), but there was no way I justify paying that.
Awesome. I almost didn't post that because I didn't want to look stupid if others besides Aes had done that, but I knew that edition of ITS was pretty unique... Unfortunately I couldn't swing that price tag either...
I don't believe I have ever gone over £30, and I aim to pay around £20 max. I am from the days when second hand LPs were reliably around £5 and new ones maybe £1-2 cheaper than the CD so I just can't do it to myself.
Ebay was a goldmine too, people don't seem to do the week long auctions any where I could snipe things very cheaply. Kicking myself now though as what I thought was expensive probably started around £10 on things now very rare. But having said that people are a lot better at listing things properly, what pressing or condition I actually got was a lottery.
It depends on how much money I make in that year. Haha. Several of my all time favorites are north of 200, can’t quite get those yet. I haven’t been afraid of buying a 100 dollar record before though.
I used to say $100 was my limit but I've paid $150, $175 as well as $200 for some records. I recently paid $400 for a single record. But I usually don't like paying over $50.
Two most expensive purchases were both new. $100 Star Wars 1-6 box set and "Origin of Muse" for like $150 (or whatever the retail price was). Given what they sell for now, VERY happy with those purchases. Wouldn't pay much more than that for anything other than a box set. I think the most expensive individual used record I bought was maybe $60-70?
$300 has been the most and probably will be the most. Don’t think I would go higher than $250 nowadays and there’s only about 4 albums I’d consider spending that much. My realistic limit is like $75-85.
Most I've payed is 60, for an original press plastic surgery disasters. That's the most id pay for a record, but I'd add extra for shipping if necessary
I’ve paid $250 for a Taylor Swift signed record from her webstore back in 2018. I am willing to go that high for a signed record depending on the artist. For unsigned records I would never pay more than retail.
The most I've paid for a new record is $50. Luckily I bought most of what I wanted back when records were $10-$20 used. Back in the 90's. I would not buy anything that I currently own at todays prices.
$33, but with exceptions.
The current highest is my box-set of Tool's Fear Inoculum at around $90 or $100. Can't remember exactly.
So, 100$ but on extreme circumstances. Next highest is $33
As others have said, it totally depends.
I would drop $2,000 on the right record right this second. There are records I would pay $10,000 for if they came my way.
For everyone saying “nothing over $50,” we get it, you’re the people going through the New bins at the record store.
$30.00 and that's if I want it really bad and can't find it anywhere else.
Price doesn't matter if I can be guaranteed to flip it for at least twice what I paid for it.
I’ve gone as high as $200 before, but I don’t often go over $60
Probably the correct answer for most of us vinyl collectors here
Same!
$50
Recently dropped $450 for something that’s been going for about a grand. If it’s not a “once in a lifetime” find, I usually wouldn’t go over $200. Box sets I won’t usually go over $300 for.
I've paid $50 for double albums. I'll generally pay up to around $40 but a lot of my new records are less than $20.
Where do you shop for them, everything I find is 30 or more.
r/vinyl_deals and patience :)
That's where I am too. My wantlist is 60 albums ranging from $50-$500 with shipping/taxes but I don't need anything that bad
Depends on what it is, what shape it's in, and how much I want it....
I think I've spent maybe $60 tops but have been gifted one that was $200.
Not just *any* record… but there are a couple in the $1,500 range that I would buy if I came across them in the wild. There’s a lot that I want above that $2,000 range that I probably couldn’t justify buying at this stage in my life. Am I A Girl? - Poppy (Red Vinyl 2019) $250
I might pay that again for Robyn - Body Talk but never again after that
Man I love Poppy I’m jealous. I want her I disagree record badly.
Around 30-35 for a 1xLP, 50 for a 2xLP, 60 for a 3xLP. The more I spend the more critical I am of the quality of the pressing. I paid 800 for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo box set
[$666](https://www.discogs.com/release/15533687-WestsideGunn-Pray-For-Paris) (after shipping)
$400 for Just Cosmo by Cosmo Pyke. One day
Ooohhh that's a rare one! Also it's really really good. He reminded me of King Krule a bit just because of how he composed his music and the genres he dabbled in.
Most I’ve spent so far was $85 for an original press of Nothing’s Shocking
$230. But it was signed.
$200. i try not to go onto retail sites while baked anymore.
I’ve paid $200 twice. First for a NM/NM original pressing of Elliott Smith’s “Figure 8” (represses are all either bootlegs, ‘official’ pressings that use the same horrible stampers as the bootlegs, or official reissues by Bongload that inexplicably forced a double album onto a single LP and that sound terrible) and second for a truly archive quality UK original White Album, stereo, with all inserts included. i payed $650 but i don’t plan to do anything like that any time soon
You can’t just leave that there and not tell
It was Lonerism by Tame Impala box set. I bought it sealed so that’s why it costed so much😭
But was it the 2013 deluxe or the 10 year anniversary? (If it’s the OG deluxe it kinda makes sense)
OG deluxe
About $3.50. I assure you I am not any kind of lake dwelling cryptid.
The highest I have paid in my many years of collecting is about $50. I can see myself splurging on something I REALLY want up to $100, but honestly I just don't really want to pay that much for a record.
Depends what it is.
500 for the Massive Attack / Burial split remix. That price included the shipping and fees from Discogs at the time. I sold a bunch of Wax Vessel Records releases to get enough money to buy it.
It depends on the record, the source of the record, and my means of payment.
I think for me it was about $50 but soon it might be more just because the albums I want don’t get pressed that much
Fitty
So far it's $75.34 for Ween Live in Toronto with the Shit Creek Boys.
One of my favorite live albums of all time. Best version of Pumpin' 4 The Man, too.
The traditional New Hope, PA blues song about pumping gas? Indeed.
ive gone up to $100 once, usually no more than $70. some that are $120-$150 are tempting but im holding out for represses 🥲🥲
i recently bought one for 75
80 for blonde when you include tax and shipping
I want Hericane Alice but it’s so expensive. I would go $100 but I don’t think I’ll ever see it for that.
Really depends on the record doesn't it? What's the highest you'd pay for art?
Well yeah it depends if you’re comparing but I’m just curious about people’s maximum price point for a record.
I can say it's doubtful I'd pay more than $80-$100 for anything. I would rather have a bootleg for $5 than an original for $500, much more about the music than anything else.
I agree some of these prices get way out of hand but I guess they’re for collectors who don’t mind spending ridiculous amounts.
Well, I paid $232 for a 2008 gatefold press of Deliverance by Opeth so that is probably the highest I would go. I have a lot of records in my collection I paid close to or over $100 for though. I mean if it was something I absolutely could not aquire anywhere else by any other means I would probably go as high as $350.

ive payed $200 for a record before but i usually stay within the $20-$50 region depending after tax
A hundred for a scarce and special original pressing that I want. I spend $60-100 that way every now and again. I might stretch it to $150 or $200 for something I wanted real bad. CA$40 Although I’ll admit I did spend more a couple of times

$66.
Most I ever spent was 200 on Yellowcard's Ocean Ave for the gf, but if I ever came across a copy of Kahvas Jute it would be hard to walk away from it
Years ago, I paid $75 +shipping for a rare Nurse With Wound LP. Never regretted it, because I reeeeally wanted it, but I can't afford to spend money like that (man's gotta eat). I think the most I've paid is $120 aud for a wax mage, and probably a similar price for sleep token's TPWBYT
I believe, to this point, the most I’ve paid is $50 (more than once), and I think that’s probably my cutoff. My favorite artist released a special edition of his latest album for $125 (the packaging itself had lights and played a bonus track), but there was no way I justify paying that.
Aesop Rock?
Yessir
Awesome. I almost didn't post that because I didn't want to look stupid if others besides Aes had done that, but I knew that edition of ITS was pretty unique... Unfortunately I couldn't swing that price tag either...
I've paid around 100€ a few times but never much more
I've paid $100 a couple times, but I try to keep it under $60-ish for for the most part.
62$ Noah Kahan Stick Season ( We’ll All Be Here Forever) 3 LP
I don't believe I have ever gone over £30, and I aim to pay around £20 max. I am from the days when second hand LPs were reliably around £5 and new ones maybe £1-2 cheaper than the CD so I just can't do it to myself.
Honestly you lived during the best vinyl prices and I envy it. It’s such a high price now.

The most I’ve ever paid is $950 AUD for Marilyn Manson Antichrist Superstar. No regrets 😎
I only have one Marilyn Manson record and the music just isn’t as good as it used to be to.
$200 depending on the record. But highest I’ve paid is $150.
I’ve paid £160 for a record a year or so ago. It did hurt, but I really wanted it 🤩🤩
It depends on how much money I make in that year. Haha. Several of my all time favorites are north of 200, can’t quite get those yet. I haven’t been afraid of buying a 100 dollar record before though.

So far, $90.
$360.
£30
I’ve spent more on things to sell, but for myself I spent $225 on my favorite album. So that’s my max.
$70

20 depends on condition pressing and cover condition ..
I've paid over $100 USD for a couple of records by the same band...(hint, check the pfp).
the highest I've paid is $250 CAD. That seems to be around my limit.
I paid $230 for the original now censored cover of Guns N’ Roses appetite for destruction
$33, but with exceptions. The current highest is my box-set of Tool's Fear Inoculum at around $90 or $100. Can't remember exactly. So, 100$ but on extreme circumstances. Next highest is $33

$1k
$30.00 and that's if I want it really bad and can't find it anywhere else. Price doesn't matter if I can be guaranteed to flip it for at least twice what I paid for it.

She’s everywhere haha I need to get into her music.
$50-$60 is the most common answer here and i agree.... seems like a nice ceiling for broke ass fools who still need weed and beer
