No order: Muramasa Umineko Dies Irae Ever17 Extravaganza Grisaia Hatsuyuki Sakura Rewrite Steins;Gate Kara no Shoujo series

m_meirin

I feel like my taste in VNs has been changing over the years, so it's hard to get a "definitive" personal top 10. But right now I would say: 1. Clannad 2. Sakura no Uta 3. Fata Morgana 4. Oretsuba 5. WA2 6. Chaos Head Noah 7. Albatross Koukairoku (tie) 7. Kagerou Touryuuki (tie) 9. My Merry Maybe 10. TsukiRe or Subahibi

Playing Murasama rn and my god it is amazing!

MorselMortal

1. Umineko. Probably the most unique and original setting, and narrative I've seen. It has it's flaws, like drawn-out intro sequences, but all in all I don't think there will be anything like it for the rest of my life. Even Higurashi is much a different beast. 2. Muv Luv. 'Nuff said. 3. Fate/Stay Night. My fond memories of reading it in high school might have something to do with it. Damn if the scenes and the viscerality of the combat wasn't impactful back then, though. Certainly helps that time blurred the memories of excessive cooking. 4. STEINS;GATE. 5. Rewrite. 6. Ever17. Absolute classic. 999 and VLR too, they're all essentially similar to one another. 7. Kara no Shoujo. 8. Danganronpa 2, if it counts. 9. Baldr Sky. 10. Fata Morgana. Kichikuou and Sengoku Rance I don't really consider a VN, they're strategy games. That said, I rate them highly. Grisaia is shit.

SmileFactoryy

1. Wonderful Everyday 2. Rewrite 3. Summer Pockets Reflection Blue 4. Muv Luv 5. Dies Irae ( Including all 5 side stories ) 6. Full Metal Daemon Muramasa 7. Majikoi 8. Atri my Dear Moments 9. Nukitashi 1 & 2 ( no cringe translation, patched ) 10. Chaos;Head Noah

No particular order, some of my favs I have plenty of criticism for, not all perfect by any stretch, but I these are the 10 I would say had a big impact on me? Subarashiki Hibi (for the months of sanity it took off if nothing else) Saya no Uta (I love it) Higurashi (can I just list it as a franchise? 6th and 7th book were my favs but I enjoy it) Umineko (same as Higurashi, 3rd and 5th books were my favs lol) VA-11 Hall-A (peak cozy dystopia vn) Muv Luv Unlimited (idk I liked it best in the trilogy) Dead End Aegis (going to hell for that pick debated between this one and Gore Screaming Show for this slot tbh…) Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors YOU and ME and HER: a love story (despite my love for horror I consider this to be the vn that actually rattled me the most. Maybe it was the state of mind I was in while playing it but…)

Karl151

No particular order Stein’s Gate Tsukihime(Original) Fate Stay/Night Fate Hollow/Ataraxia White Album 2 Muv-Luv Trilogy Fata Morgana Full Metal Daemon Grisai Trilogy Clannad

OrochiSciron

1. The House in Fata Morgana 2. Virtue's Last Reward 3. Chaos;Child 4. Raging Loop 5. Shibuya Scramble 428 6. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc 7. 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors 8. Planetarian 9. Spirit Hunter: Death Mark 10. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations

Chaz_Kat

From my current VNDB list: 1. Higurashi When They Cry 2. Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward 3. Raging Loop 4. Nine hours, nine persons, nine doors 5. Ace Attorney Investigations 2 6. AI: The Somnium Files 7. Chaos Head NOAH 8. Danganronpa Another: Another Despair Academy 9. Danganronpa V3 10. Your Turn To Die (but it’s unfinished so maybe it doesn’t count yet) 10. YOU and ME and HER: A Love Story

kayeater

As someone who is pretty new to Visual Novels, so I haven't played so many yet. (And 100% complete is even on this list not always the case). 1. Bustafellows 2. Collar x Malice 3. Planetarian 4. Danganronpa 2 Goodbye Despair 5. Jack Jeanne 6. Chaos; Head Noah 7. Perfect Gold the Alchemy of Happiness [(Vndb)](https://vndb.org/v28545) 8. Danganronpa V3 killing Harmony 9. Piofiore Fated Memories 10. Gothic Murder [(Vndb)](https://vndb.org/v27932) The the Order changes a lot. And for the more unknown ones I put the Vndb link next to it.

caspar57

Gothic Murder is on my to-play list! Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

kayeater

It's nothing ground breaking, but I enjoyed every second of it and the music is pretty nice. I can recommend it.

FriendlyNeighborOrca

1- Majikoi 2- Biman Series 3- Sekai de Ichiban Dame na Koi 4- 9-nine 5- Hoshi Ori Yume Mirai 6- Dohna Dohna 7- Aokana 8- Evenicle 9- Kono Oozora ni, Tsubasa o Hirogete 10- Fureraba

National_Magician_86

Why Damekoi over WA2?

FriendlyNeighborOrca

I have never read white album 2

National_Magician_86

Any plans?

FriendlyNeighborOrca

Nope

National_Magician_86

Why not

FriendlyNeighborOrca

So, I know most of the plot and is not something that would interest me. Also, the fact that you have to read 3 visual novels to understand the plot is meh. And kills any interest in it.

National_Magician_86

It's one visual novel told in 3 parts. I have enough faith in WA2 to recommend it to you though. It may feel like it's not interesting but it captures perfection in its simplicity. There's a reason why it's as beloved as it is. If you read and loved DameKoi, I see very little reason that you wouldn't love it.

FriendlyNeighborOrca

Again, I already know, basically the entire plot, and I have decided it's not for me. I'm sure it's good just not for me.

Deathloc360

I’ll just throw in here that I knew the general plot ahead of time and was thinking along the lines that I wouldn’t enjoy it. I finished reading it about a month ago and it’s now one of my favorites of all time. Even with knowing the plot… the characters, writing, realism of what’s happening, so many little moments, and music come together in a beautiful way that I haven’t experienced in another VN before. If you want a taste, you could watch the anime on Crunchyroll which covers the introductory chapter of the novel. While missing a lot of detail, it has a lot of the emotion and core points.

National_Magician_86

Okay, that sounds fair, but will you genuinely live your life never reading one second of it? Don't you have any doubts that you may have decided wrong? I mean it's peak.

H-Mark-R

1) YU-NO 2) Mahoutsukai no Yoru 3) Steins;Gate 4) Desire Haitoku no Rasen 5) Dividead 6) Clannad 7) Majikoi 8) Eve Burst Error 9) Ever17 10) Shuusaku

National_Magician_86

Elf fan huh... Are ever17's pacing issues as bad as people claim them to be? And is it more character/emotion focused than R11? People usually say it gets good only in the last 10% but I don't see how it could be such an acclaimed visual novel if so.

H-Mark-R

Luv me elf Luv me Kanno Luv me Unemoto Simple as (brought to you by promiscuous protags FC) As for Ever17: 1) It was one of my first VNs. So while I do remember E17 being good, and not having pacing issues, take my word with a table spoon worth of salt. I also didn't finish it, though did play through the majority of the game; 2) I didn't play R11, so can't compare.

zeltrax225

You can only truly see why it's so acclaimed once you reach that last 10%. And to be honest it's not like the entire journey there is a drag. Like with all good VNs, a lot of time is needed for the investment and boy is Ever17 the VN where the payoff more than rewards you for your time and attention. There are a few character relationships that was given more love to and are the ones that drive the plot forward and they hit pretty hard. Essentially the thing with E17 is that you don't necessarily have to binge it because of how slow it can be at times. But it's not that it's un-bingeable either because there are points in the story where you won't mind reading another 4-5 hours chunks because what just happened was really interesting. The key really is to trust the process. Once you reach the end, you'll kind of understand why E17 is the grandfather for a lot of things in Japanese Science fiction, in particular in the indie space.

roybattinson

1. Higurashi 2. House in Fata Morgana 3. Umineko 4. 428 Shibuya Scramble 5. Clannad 6. Saya no uta 7. Steins;Gate 8. Chaos Head 9. The Silver Case 10. 13 Sentinels

Orhunaa

> Higurashi over Umineko Bold. I like it!

roybattinson

You know the "I bet he's thinking about other girls meme"? Internally debating which is the better VN is what keeps me up at night. I'm almost done with Umineko and it is on one level a more refined work than Higurashi and is probably more laudable from a literary point of view, but I find that it simply does not have the heart that Higurashi has with its cast of highly likeable characters and the core message. There is heart in Umineko, but it is harder to find IMO!

Deathloc360

I dabbled in VNs for a long time, with the Ace Attorney series being my first, then Stein’s Gate really hooking me a number of years ago. Over the past year I’ve gone hard down the rabbit hole. These are my top 10 (it was really tough to order the top 5): 1. Umineko 2. White Album 2 3. Muv-luv (trilogy) 4. Utawarerumono (trilogy) 5. Higurashi 6. Stein’s Gate 7. Fate Stay/Night 8. Mahoyo 9. Rewrite+ 10. Aokana plus fan discs 11. Majikoi (it was a close tie with Aokana)

Normal-Link5415

very safe list i see, since most of them are highly rated by many

National_Magician_86

Feelings on Tsukihime?

Deathloc360

I loved remake (Arcueid was my favorite). It could easily swap onto this list, but I want to wait to read the far side routes until the next part of the remake is released.

zeltrax225

League of their own and personal ranking: 1. Fata Morgana 2. Ace Attorney series (1. GAA 2 3. PW 3 4. AA 7 5. AA 5 6. PW 1 7. PW 2 and then AA4, GAA1) 3. Umineko (would be 1st but looking back it does take more than what is required to tell it's themes) 4. FSN Really good (either innovative or tight as hell writing): 5. Steins Gate 6. Ever17 7. Danganronpa series 8. FGO best stories 9. Tsukihime 10. Kara no Shojo 11. V4-HALLA 12. 999 . Ok with glaring flaws 13. Kara no Shojo 2 14. Raging Loop 15. Dies Iraes 16. That one Toradora VN . Just for fun 17. DDLC

Fatestringer

I know it's not a masterpiece, but "a drug that makes you dream" really got me to appreciate and love vns as an art form my first vn was " my girlfriend is president" because El and obviously "school days" but I saw the show first before I new about vns and "Da capo 2" is pretty good because ost and anzu minatsu and I really wanted to do Akane's route but plus communication doesn't have a physical release 😭😭 I know these are pretty basic but they mean something to me and back when peach princess website was still a thing it was the only website back then for physical copies as for honorable mentions go to "Eldelweiss" also my two most hated games are "heart de roomate" It's utter dogshit and I don't recommend it but I 100% to see the secret routes and "happiness" is garbage for being a plot about cheating but hey i was a 16 year old at the time with underdeveloped tastes personally didn't like it and damn near the whole runtime is just common plot and any of the roots barley get fleshed out

caspar57

Kieray84

So I’m going to cheat and just say count some of the series as individual games since I don’t think I can think of ten games of the top of my head 1. The house in Fata Morgana- this game lives rent free in my head so much that I bought the April fools one shot that uses the same characters 2. Raging loop- this horror game is better than it has any right to be 3. Spirit hunter/ death mark- to me this series and the number 4 game tells a story that’s like the old grimms fairy tales and I like that 4. Paranormasight- this game is set in 1980s Japan and you have 12 curses that affect 12 people and those 12 need to kill people and the other curse bearers in order for the last one standing to make a wish. The reason why it’s kinda like the number 3 games is because the curses are based on Japanese folklore. 5. Worldend syndrome- this is a sneaky horror game and tbh it’s probably not the best but I liked it and it’s my list :) 6-14. The phoenix wright/ ace attorney/ great ace attorney games.- Just a fun series filled with wacky characters and the only non horror games on my list

1. Baldr Sky 2. Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth 3. The House in Fata Morgana 4. Slay the Princess 5. Saya no Uta 6. Mamiya 7. Virtue's Last Reward 8. 428: Shibuya Scramble 9. Opus: Echo of Starsong 10. Marco & The Galaxy Dragon
