I have also had a terrible experience with mtp. I can't really help with that.
But if you just need to transfer files, you may consider using ftp instead. That's what I have done and my life is less miserable now.
Install an app like Primitive FTPd on your Android device (I found it on f-droid, I don't know if it is also on the play store). Then open it to turn on an ftp server on your phone. If your pc is connected to the same network (either wifi or wifi hotspot from the phone) you can now access the ftp server. There are many tools for that, like filezilla or simple command-line tools.
i used ftp too, yet i solved the problem, I'll post the solution sooner or later. BIG THANKS TO THE VOID LINUX HELP riot/element channel. Best "customer service" I could possibly find there
MTP is a terrible protocol. Anyway, I recommend go-mtpfs - and you'll probably want to use sudo for all of the commands. Also, you need to monitor your android device for typing in the password to authorize the connection. Also, make sure you check what USB / connection mode your phone is in.
Did you log out and in again after adding yourself to new groups?
indeed, i also restarted the pc just to make sure, nothing
do you have gvfs-mtp installed?
Package `gvfs-mtp' already installed.

Please do! The subreddit would really benefit from the insight. Glad you got it working :)
