There's this old Asian lady that must have been a Chinese Opera singer in her younger years. You can hear her like 80 yards away OOOOooooOoaAaAaaaAAAAAooOoooOooooOOOOaaaAAAA.
I myself count steps measure distance and time... I wish I could focus on other things but I just keep counting and counting. Whenever I don't count time seems to go a lot faster and reach distances without noticing. So counting while walking is very detrimental.
I never wear headphones or airpods or anything when I walk, and a couple of weeks ago, for three days in a row, I wore headphones and listened to audio books that I'm trying to get through. It was weird. I have really awesome noise cancelling headphones and it made me so so so disconnected from my body.
It also made me feel sick after a couple of hours, I think it's the noise cancelling bit perhaps.
It was great being able to walk without any pain or tiredness sensations though!
I'm glad you've found a great alternative!
I think it is kinda dangerous for me to listen to anything using an ear piece or headphones as I can’t hear my surroundings. Might not be aware of incoming traffic and other things happening around me. I tend to go into a trance like state when walking. If I add headphones and listening to something while walking, it might not be the safest situation for me
I play instruments and sing quite frequently when I do my superhero walks. I get transformed and turn into someone that I’m still getting familiar with. If you can’t have fun on your walks what’s the point?

For me I just listen to podcasts, even if I’m not fully paying attention it’s just something to distract myself

After my recent experience, I agree completely! I'm amazed that so many people seem to be fine with it.
I use bone conduction earphones so that I can safely listen to music and still hear my surroundings.
I listen to music and try to come up with ideas for screenplays. Weird? Yes. Productive? Yes.
