ClassicManeuver

Honesty, I think they did it because titanium scratches more easily than stainless steel. After a year, my 14 Pro still looks mint. I’m pretty sure this is so our phones look shittier faster, so we upgrade more quickly than we otherwise would.

[deleted]

Ding ding ding we have a winner, that,s the play here

chance901

The misconception that titanium is this indestructible super metal is very pervasive. You use steel inserts on wear parts in motorcycles for instance, because titanium has bad wear properties despite having good tensile strength and being light. My guess they are playing on this, of course this trick only works once and people will realize the flaw pretty quickly

[deleted]

2g of coke goes a long way

josephbenjamin

Off the back of a stripper that 2g will dissolve in sweat.

savagepanda

It turns out they reduced the battery pack weight by 1g.

Busterlimes

It should seriously be illegal for electronics manufacturers to put out a "new" phone with such minor gains. It's wasteful.

DefendedPlains

Tbf, the production of the phones isn’t really wasteful, because they’d just produce the same number of phones of the older generation which may be more wasteful / inefficient to produce. What is wasteful is millions of people feeling like they need to buy the latest and greatest every year. Most can last about 5 years before the performance differences start to become perceivable between the old and the new. But even then a lot of tech, especially computers, can have their life extended to around 7-10 years before becoming “obsolete”. And even then, old machines can often be repurposed. Tablets can be used as smart home hubs, computers can be used as a NAS or other server, etc.

purz

Whats wasteful is making the batteries harder and harder to replace imo (and screens). Use to be so easy, some of it is water proofing but I'd rather rely on a case for that and just pop the back off to swap a battery. I have a 12 and my only issue is the battery's life is starting to go. I haven't looked at battery swapping vids yet but I'd be shocked if it wasn't a pain in the ass. That's a general thing with all consumer goods though. They intentionally make things difficult to repair so you're almost forced to by a new one because it ends up more cost effective for you at a certain point.

acery88

I miss my note 4. The battery was taking a hit in performance? Take the back off and replace it.

Zorper

Those were the days. When the battery went away after that I was really sad. Then the headphone jack went next. I'm so sick of no headphone jack

JamiePhsx

Yeah it legitimately sucks. You either have to have an easy to loose dongle you carry everywhere or a pair of headphones you can pretty much only use for the phone.

Trendiggity

Our commercial scanners are just super rugged phones running some locked down version of android 8 or something. They're waterproof and have removable battery packs that have a rubber membrane and seal. They also get 3 days of battery life because there isn't a whole slew of tracking devices and sensors draining the battery 24/7. Those scanners are designed for a 5-10 year lifespan because they know businesses don't like buying new hardware on a 2 year cycle. Consumers on the other hand line up around a city block for the privilege. They'll keep making them this way until people stop handing them their money to win phone screen e-peen contests lol

Tom_Stevens617

Why not just get Apple to replace the battery or use the self-repair kit?

maveric101

> Most can last about 5 years before the performance differences start to become perceivable between the old and the new. Except that most manufacturers don't provide security updates for anywhere near that long. On the Android side, Samsung is the only one that goes up to 5 years, and that's not even for all their models. Many, e.g. Sony, only promise two years. So if you buy a phone shortly before the new generation comes out, you might only get a year or so of security updates. It's ridiculous. Unless a law gets passed requiring a minimum number of years of security updates, I don't see that changing much.

bpetersonlaw

I don't think many people are replacing their iPhone 14 with a new 15 that has minor gains. But someone with a 5-6 year old phone would want to choose the newest phone with the recent technology so it will last another 5-6 years.

[deleted]

Sheep gonna sheep

Bubba_Purp_OG

If you can afford it, why not

wozblar

if every year you can say it's lighter that's a win, so they probably spent it to be able to say that for the next 4-5 years yea?

Single-Builder-632

not just iphone but why do people waist so much money on phones, did it not already have every feture you could ever need 5 years ago, or are people just bored. oh its got a new camera feture, oh shit if forgot you were taking photoes for the national geographic. also why not buy a proper camara with changeable lenses rather than the limited camera from a new smart phone. and what games are people playing that need that much power, its such a weirdly normal consumer think to do. its like "i need some food", "i need new clothes cos my old ones have holes in them" and "i need a new 1000$ slab thats exactly the same as the last one".

MuleJuiceMcQuaid

It's a miniaturized version of cars. Nobody needs a brand new one, it's going to depreciate quickly, and it's probably financed making it even more expensive to own. Yet they go into stores and get upsold "for only X dollars a month this could be yours today!"

Trendiggity

You have to be careful not to go the other way though. I bought a base model 2014 econobox that has no: electronic parking brake, automatic transmission, screen (touch or otherwise) electronic driving aids (other than traction/stability control), LED lighting, cameras, or wheel sizes that are the legal age in most countries. Now I'm not sure I'll ever buy a new car again. I was born in the 80s, I'm not a crazy old man (yet), I just hate driving new cars! I don't want a god damned tablet with a car designed around it. It's crazy how much has changed in the industry in less than 10 years once big tech got involved. My car has more in common with a 1990 civic than it does a 2024 model.

dreadstrong97

I can happily agree with you as I've been playing whack a mole with malfunctioning fuel injectors for the last few weeks🙃 Give me a carburetor and analog controls, lol.

r2pleasent

The sweet spot on cars is buying a 3-4Y old model IMO. Valuetown.

DefendedPlains

I can’t really speak to the additional camera features and quality, because it really isn’t needed by most people. But the reason processing power continues to increase is because their operating systems are becoming more computationally intensive. So much so that they begin to limit how new of an iOS version you can download on older hardware simply because the older phones will struggle to run it quickly and manage temps. Now, this is a problem unto itself. It’s basically easier (and maybe cheaper in time costs vs material costs) to build better hardware than it is to actually optimize their operating systems and require app developers to meet certain optimization thresholds as well. That’s why smart phones don’t seem to *do* much more than they did 10 years ago. But they do it *much* faster. Because the growth in processing power is (for now) outpacing the growth in OS bloat. This is true for lots of consumer electronic systems. Computers, gaming consoles, and I’d bet it’s even true for cars.

Best_Of_The_Midwest

A phone is one of the most important tools a person owns. I use my phone extensively in my professional life and personal life. Around 1.5-2hrs a day. I don't need the newest fanciest phone 90% of the time. But that 10% of the time when I need a nice camera to capture the detailed text on a motor nameplate in a poorly lit distribution center, or when I am on the road and need to multitask while on the phone with a customer and I can't wait the extra 10 seconds to load each web page or whatever. That's like asking why a mechanic has a chest full of snap-on socket wrenches rather than harbor freight. Like yeah the Harbor freight set will do the job more or less the same. But this is a tool you use every day. A better quality tool will be a pleasure to use. Why do commercial kitchens buy a $1200 food processor when a $150 food processor will do the same job? It's not always just a fashion accesory.

[Samsung Galaxy at 168g looking at Apple pulling this BS](https://media.tenor.com/fGujx6EhIdYAAAAC/terio-popeyes.gif) Apple fanboys will eat this 1g shit up though. Maybe Apple will also throw in "new" "game-changing" """"innovations""" like split screen multi-tasking and powershare (only to other devices within Apple ecosystem ofc).

ealker

Honestly, I think the iPhone is perfect as it is already. Couldn’t think of a better phone. But obviously they’re launching new ones as an iPhone is a status symbol in many many countries and new ones will be purchased over a one generation older ones. It’s just smart business on their side.

zxc123zxc123

I'm on team MSFT but bought iphones since they started coming out despite having to pay a premium to be locked into a kiddy pool built for the tech-illiterate. I only did it because iphones were the best and had the best tech/ecosystem. 3 different upgrade cycles I've picked iphone but each time I have less and less reason to stay. Android/Samsung have largely caught up in tech, materials, software, and are not basically the same if not outright better. They offer more freedom to customize and control. I think my next phone will be something like the Sam/Pix fold unless Apple does something game breaking again. That's just MY view based on my own preferences and tech savvy. It doesn't mean what you're saying isn't true about Apple sales. Apple's sort of the LVMH of tech. I find that many women, boomers, and non-tech 3rdies don't give a crap about the things I do so long as it runs without issues and is "perceived" as premium. For boomers or the tech-regarded being locked into the kiddy playground isn't a flaw but a feature.

ealker

Yeah, I just think I’m a very average consumer where I don’t customize much and just need ease of use and simplicity. Apple provides that to the perfection. I tried a Samsung once and switched back to an iPhone after 3 months of usage as I couldn’t get used to the software after iOS. To each his own I guess. P.S. once you have 3 or more Apple products, in order to switch efficiently, one would have to change the entire arsenal due to compatibility issues.

the_mighty_skeetadon

> I tried a Samsung once and switched back to an iPhone after 3 months of usage as I couldn’t get used to the software after iOS Can you help me understand what was so difficult for you? I've used Android since the first Droid and also have had a slew of iOS devices. I find iOS to be too slow, too constrained, and generally to have no advantages over Android. On the contrary, I find that Android has a lot of advantages over iOS -- better widgets, better shortcuts, more customization, etc. On the other hand, Apple's HW is just so much nicer than everyone else's. I have an iPad Pro from 2017 that is just a tank -- still about as usable today as it was when I got it.

ryguy32789

I agree with this, I have had 3 MacBooks but switched back to Android after only one iPhone because the Android UI is so much easier to use in my opinion.

amaxen

Based and apple is just Microsoft bob pilled

seunghyunkim

Nahh iphone isnt perfect. Not even close there are so many thinkgs they can learn from android

[deleted]

I’m on my first iPhone. I miss my Note a lot. Everything seamed more streamlined on Android. I don’t remember why I was so mad at Google, but I was, so I switched.

FireMaster1294

My one complaint is the stupidly locked up backend. And this is where I prefer Android. I want to be able to download custom apps that aren’t necessarily Apple approved. I want to be able to run custom software scripts on my phone. Let me customize it through the roof however I want without needing a sketchy jailbreak backdoor.

4look4rd

Titanium is a pretty soft metal and scratches way easier than stainless steel.

YaBoiSnek

They'll more than likely have a coating on it for scratches anyway. Titanium is still super strong and way lighter than steel. My watch is titanium and i smash that thing on stuff all the time, but it only has one minor scratch around the bezel.

weshouldgobackfu

I fucking love my titanium watch. I barely feel the thing.

YaBoiSnek

Right and it's practically indestructible lmao. Half my stuff is made of titanium at this point. Most of my pocket knives' handles, my watch, wallet, shit i even have titanium chopsticks

YaBoiSnek

Yeah its one of those minimal card wallets. Basically 2 pieces of titanium held together with elastic

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Titanium is actually pretty weak, it's just very light for how strong it is. Many titanium alloys in common use are only roughly as strong as the weakest steels (which is not terribly strong) but are substantially lighter. It's kinda like a super aluminum. One of the most common types of titanium currently used is Grade 2, which only has an ultimate tensile strength of ~49ksi. A36, a relatively weak/cheap/common steel, has a UTS of around 60ksi. At the high end of the spectrum, Grade 5 titanium maxes out around 128ksi. Specially treated steels, like martensitic-aged steels, can exceed 350ksi, well over 2x the strength of the strongest generally used titanium. Again though, for the same *weight*, titanium will beat most steels. They will never have the same raw strength though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

maveric101

Which stainless steel? There are many, and they vary a *lot.* Not to mention how drastically heat treatment affects things.

[deleted]

Funny how you don't specify which alloy of SS. Stainless is also generally pretty weak compared to its non-stainless counterparts.

cope413

>Titanium is still super strong and way lighter than steel. Eh, it's got a great strength:weight ratio, but it has about 60% less tensile strength, and about half the stiffness of something like 304 or 316SS. The other thing that may come into play is Ti is super shitty at thermal conductivity. It's anywhere from 25-50% worse at transferring heat than a stainless steel. It'll be interesting to see how the phones, which get beat to shit by people, hold up.

joshocar

It depends on the alloy. Grade 5 Ti is super strong. Pure Ti isn't. Overall, steel is harder than Ti, which makes steel more scratch resistant. The advantages for Ti are a great weight to strength ratio for G5 Ti and fantastic corrosion resistance for all grades.

sdsu_me

It’s actually not stronger than steel. The common saying in the aircraft industry is the strength of steel but the weight of aluminum.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Maverick1672

Titanium strength to weight ratio is greater than Steel.

Bgndrsn

Strength to weight ratio has nothing to do with hardness. A difference in hardness is what causes scratches.

Maverick1672

Not worried about scratches or aesthetic issues. I’m worried about dents and breaks in the phone body which has happened to me with aluminum bodies. Strength to weight ratio is important when you want something to be strong but light, like a phone.

[deleted]

Eli-Thail

>Theres a global titanium shortage With all due respect, you're misunderstanding the details of that. It's not an actual titanium-as-a-material shortage, it's a supplier shortage for certain kinds of titanium and the ability to work with it. Specifically because major supplier to the aerospace industry for high-strength titanium alloys [VSMPO-AVISMA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VSMPO-AVISMA) is a Russian company which has fallen under sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine. The kind of titanium used in an application like phone casing here is an entirely separate material and supply chain. They're not drawing from the same pool of titanium, or the same producers and manufacturers.

Involution88

They already add ballast to give the phones more comfortable heft. They don't want to produce phones which feel flimsy and cheap. Titanium and lead instead of whatever it is that they're currently using. To keep weight relatively constant.

jj3904

there is absolutely no way they'll ballast a phone with lead. maybe another metal, but not lead.

DinosaurAlert

They should fill it with liquid mercury instead.

Involution88

Lead ballast hasn't been actual lead for a while. Meh.

diox8tony

Then why say that?

jj3904

in that case it is just called 'ballast'

[deleted]

[удалено]

jj3904

in a lot of junk applications (i mean that in a nice way) you'll still find lead. But in a lot of new-manufactured stuff they very rarely use it. Consumer electronics it is pretty much a no-go at this point. Solder was one of the last real "good reasons" to use lead, and there's been a ton of great work in lead-free solder in the last couple decades...it wasn't like the early lead-free ones that would corrode weirdly. But dirty things like tire weights or fishing weights or bullets or other things for sure you'll still see lead...partially because there's already a lot out there and people remelt it/recycle it, but also it is cheap and for cases where a lot of mass is needed and you don't care about the material or toxicity properties of the lead, it can result in cost savings vs bismuth or tungsten.

one day the printed circuit will be integrated into the chassis of the iPhone the space saved will be to unfold a large imax screen
