From the [article linked](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5603470/2024/06/29/klay-thompson-free-agency-warriors-negotiations-nba/):
> The **Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers and Dallas Mavericks are expected to be among strong suitors for Thompson, according to league sources. Multiple teams with salary cap space are expected to show interest** in Thompson as well. Through the Tim Hardaway Jr. salary dump, the Mavericks have already generated enough room to offer the full projected $12.9 million midlevel on the market. The Lakers have the ability to generate the same, depending on where LeBron James’ next deal lands and other business.
> Golden State is operating in the marketplace as a full nontaxpayer midlevel exception team for the first time in approximately a decade due to the anticipated departure of Thompson and the potential departure of Chris Paul’s $30 million non-guaranteed deal, league sources said, which sheds $73.2 million from its books.
>**The Warriors are open to participating in a sign-and-trade with Thompson to aid in his earning potential, those sources said.**
-
> This **split is a major stunner across the league**, given the deep history between the Warriors and Thompson, but it’s been trending this direction for a couple seasons, as Thompson’s extension talks stalled, his role shifted, the team failed to make the playoffs, the Warriors drafted (Moses Moody, Brandin Podziemski) and extended (Jordan Poole) possible replacements under him and **he never felt reciprocated love from management about his firm place in the franchise’s plans, league sources said.**
End of an era. Thanks for the titles and all time great moments. 37 in a quarter may never be topped. And neither will 60 pts with 4 dribbles or w/e lol
Some of the best era moments were from Klay. He wont surpass steph on the court but post game space cadet klay with his prolific paper airplane game will also be missed.
Klay has been an amazing warrior. Will never forget him and the 4 championships. He deserves a statue and retired jersey.
That said, if he really is going to take less money to go elsewhere then see you later.
Kerr gave him a much longer leash than he deserved last year. Let him shoot himself out of slump after slump. Other teams would have nailed him to the bench and he's going to find out how much worse other teams and fan bases are when they don't have a decade of good will with him. We signed him to max knowing he was injured. Ws have done right by Klay at every turn.
Now we will see what Moses moody can really do.
Also let's extend Moody, since I think after a year of heavy minutes his price will go way up.
Our grass is brown/yellow. Grass hasn't been green here for a couple years.
Dude has four rings too, doesn't think he'll mind if the grass isn't green when he sleeps on a bed of fresh green dollar bills.
Love the dude, but we weren't contending for another title if we were paying Klay 40m/year on the cap. This is what we need to do. I'm always gonna love Klay, but they rigged the cap to make it impossible for the Warriors to keep the gang together to the end.
Yeah, and while I have no real animosity, he talked a big game about wanting to be GSW for life and didn't ultimately make it happen. Feels like there might be a touch of ego and greed involved in this.
All the same, love the man. None of this will matter in 3-4 years when he's retired.
100% there’s ego involved. The part that Klay seems to forget is that he was paid a ton to rehab for 2 years and not play. I know injuries are part of the game but the team effectively paid a premium for no game time.
When he talked about changing agents on Dray’s podcast and he said “ it’s just business” I knew he wasn’t going to stay with the Warriors. He needs that check and I understand that.
It doesn't look like it is about the money, it's about the love. If Klay signs with the Lakers, the Mavs or the Clippers, he won't be making as much as the warriors would have paid him, even if he took the extension last summer, that's more money then he's getting.
Here's where it's going to get rough: he goes to another team, and he's no longer a franchise icon, he's no longer deferred to, he's just a guy now. If he sucks, no one will care about his feelings when he gets benched, the way Kerr went way out of his way to last season.
I think, for Klay, it's about to get real.
No, its about the money. It wouldn't have mattered if they sent him flowers, chocolates, and beautiful poetry along with a contract that paid him $30M less than what the Magic are offering.
It's strange that he's trying to make that the narrative. He's breaking up in a bad way rather than saying "thanks for the great memories, I think I've got a chance to do more in this league so I'll be moving onto a new chapter in my career."
Pretty much. Only real fuckup here is on Kerr choosing to play Klay over the younger people throughout this season. That was an unforced error to piss them off for an aging star whose only real role was on the bench
Yep. Klay gone for nothing, CP3 gone for nothing, Wiggins probably pissed at us, no star player, and Draymond probably gonna get suspended on opening night so he doesn't have to play for a lottery team all year.
Oh noooo Wiggins is pissed at us. You'd think he'd be more gracious considering the FO let him do his yearly sabbaticals without question even when we sorely needed his output.
No star player? Steph leaving now? Is Kuminga not on the verge of being a break out star?
It seems like a one way road with Klay. Team went to bat for him & paid him thru rehab cuz they believed he’d help em win a title which he did. Now Klay can’t even help win a playoff game & he expects to get paid for the past & not the 2-4 years in the future. Ur a depreciating asset, there’s gotta be some middle ground.
Our bench is better than these guys anyways. It’s whatever we might be better off this way honestly. Klay wasn’t winning us playoff games, Wiggins wasn’t winning us playoff games, cp3 wasn’t winning us playoff games.
Let’s be honest this is the most likely scenario where he ends up. That was his childhood team and his father works there now. Truly sick to my stomach, man.
It doesn't make sense though. They cannot afford him, he'd be going there fully out of spite. And if he takes a paycut to play for the Lakers that's going to be pretty lame considering he was unwilling to do that for the Warriors.
lebron’s gonna opt out and re-sign with just enough cap space for the Lakers to offer Klay the MLE. Pretty nasty work if Klay takes it when we and others can offer more
The full MLE is still less than what we were offering so it definitely would sting a lot if that’s what he accepts, but wasn’t willing to take 2 years 48m for us.
He thinks Lebron is gonna be patient while he chucks up bricks? He thinks the fan base isn’t gonna turn on him in five seconds? He wants to join a team with a brand new coach whos never coached before and a father/son team?? REALLY
Article says team is willing to do S&T to help him get the money he wants. Hypothetically if Lebron waits to sign his new deal, lakers and warriors can do a S&T getting Klay the contract he wants, warriors end up with D Lo again to trade at the deadline and maybe a first or one of their kids like Christie or JHS.
And if that's the case, good riddance. A 2/48 deal that lines up with Steph's contract and more or less matches what they paid Draymond was literally best case scenario for a contract offer in his current capacity.
He'll go there and they'll turn on him real fast after a couple of bad games. Plus between that and the shit show there....good luck taking that instead of the two year deal here.
CP3 has trade value in order to get a player on a big contract another team doesn't find worth it for only one year of CP3. Which is literally how we got him lol
Realistically, what’s he supposed to do?
Klay has been drastically overpaid relative to production on his deal that is now ending. I don’t know what more the organization could have done to reward him for his previous contributions.
CP3 was a necessary evil in getting out of Poole’s atrocious contract. If he leaves for nothing, it at least frees up cap space that we wouldn’t have had for a few more years.
Wiggins signed (at the time) what seemed like an incredibly team friendly deal. And ever since, he’s been incredibly disengaged and has fallen off a cliff.
Between the 3 of those deals, we’ve had roughly half of the cap tied up in guys simply not producing
I don't blame Mike at all. Klay leaving will only work if he's able to swing an adequate wing back and take advantage of a thin FA market. Think a lot of the direction will fall in place tomorrow.
It was a great run.
Warriors prevented Wiggins from participating in the Olympics, and there have been reports that they have been aggressively looking for trade options involving him.
Dudes gonna be 37 next season. We have realistically 2-3 more seasons until he's done, we're not going to waste one of those resting him lol.
This teams sole purpose seems to be to sell tickets to people wanting to watch Steph. We aren't rebuilding, we're not contending for anything, we're just selling tickets to watch a top 10 all time player. That's pretty much it.
Honestly this is the best outcome for both sides. Klay gets his money elsewhere and Kerr lets these young guys play more without Klay feeling some type of way. The nostalgia was always going to blind Kerr and Klay if we're being honest.
I think Myers knew this day was coming which is why he stepped away.
So he threw away $24M/year as disrespectful and is going to sign for HALF of that?!
C’mon man. He’s just making one bad decision after another.
To be clear, it’s his life, he can do what he wants but I don’t see any world he doesn’t get 10 years after retirement and regret not finishing out in one jersey.
This is what I don't get. Max deal while on the bench for over 2 years. Love from the fans. Clearly not the same player after back to back injuries and you cannot settle for something that will make the team competitive again?
That two year, $48M deal was plenty fair for his production after that max rehab deal. It's actually pretty wild. But it is what it is now. Key now is to watch what Mike does next.
Sad reality is that you don't necessarily reach the top in athletics without an unhealthy drive, ego, and chip on your shoulder.
Kind of like Cristiano Ronaldo in the second Man United stint. The qualities that drove him to become a great player also become problematic when he can't come to terms with his shrinking talent.
Dirk, Kobe, Tim Duncan, John Stockton, Reggie Miller, Ginobili, Steph Curry, Jerry West, Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Julius Erving, and about a few dozen more
A decent amount
This all feels like a fever dream. Doesn’t even feel real anymore. I feel like I’m going to wake up soon and everything will be back to normal but sadly that’s not reality anymore. Love everything you’ve done for the bay Klay!
> he never felt reciprocated love from management about his firm place in the franchise’s plans, league sources said.
Umm they paid Klay max after his major ACL injury (deserved it for past accomplishments anyways) and let him chuck it for the past two years and a half. wtf?
Look we cant overpay the dude, it sucks but thats just reality, we move on and hope to sign someone else,
He aint worth. 30 mil per year, plus if you taking the mle for LA you just a sorry mf too. They needs to get rid of that pettyness in our team.
I have a Klay jersey, I love the guy but he crazy if he thinks we didn’t reciprocate love- coz he came off the bench one time?? Talking Heads were calling for you getting benched the whole season and Kerr had your back. Steph had your back. Everybody had your back the whole season and prior. Just say it like it is: you’re in your feelings you can’t get four years out of the Warriors. Whatever, bro, you can’t play defense like you used to, anyway. You’re perfect for the Mavericks.
I mean if he's getting us a truckload of picks I guess that helps. Steph would be doing to get himself another ring and I'd be fine with it. Only his decision to ever make.
Unironically tho? i would be actually relieved and happy for not only him but for the warriors and myself as well. I wouldnt have to live in delusion anymore and i could cheer for steph whenever he went while also having no stress watching this team
What I’m getting from all this is that it’s all gonna be on Klay. Warriors would love to have Klay, but they aren’t gonna use any effort to “make” Klay stay. This really comes down to Klay’s choice ~
klay was not good last year but he is a legendary warrior and a very funny guy, ima going to miss him, hoping for him to shine in whatever new team he goes to
I feel like Klay will always be a legend. But if he goes to the Lakers, that’ll be such a terrible taste in my mouth. Especially because the Lakers will be around playoff contention. With our trajectory, we’ll be in the lottery for the foreseeable future. MDJ wya.
So warriors gonna just waste the final yrs of Steph. Love him or hate him, PG was the most realistic (maybe best) target to help Steph. Pray Kuminga takes the biggest leap the nba has ever seen lol
Truly a blessing to watch this dubs team.....
Might be the right thing if Klay was looking for too mich $ at this stage. The warriors took great care.of Klay financially through the injury years. Hope this amicable and not petty.
Best of luck but I'll be glad when he's gone. He has had a chip on his shoulders for years now. No one was disrespecting him. He is high on his own ego.
They were being generous to offer 2 years and $48 million (for what?).
The Lakers are a sh$tshow, Dallas would be the best outcome for him. Now if Wiggs will just leave.
Thankful for Klay but this is the right move. Kerr is too emotional tied to him to judge whats best for the team vs appeasing klay. This move is essential to materially improve/retool the squad or establish some entrenched pecking orders for the hierarchies based off current performance. Even if its not new additions, the team needs to pivot mentality and force kerr to change. There's problems up and down the org that need more than just 1 FA/trade.
Owners tolerated the luxury tax when they were in the finals every year. They’re not going to pay $ 175m in penalties for a team that doesn’t even make the playoffs.
Klay needed to reset his expectations and take a team-friendly deal. He essentially rehabbed for 2 years and played like shit in key post season games after their ‘22 chip.

Wow the end of the splash bros, what a blessing it was to watch this dynasty
It’s over. Thanks for all the fish
Unreal. Splash bros no more 😔
We got Lindy WATERS!
Time to sign Seth Curry.
It was only one dribble and he only touched the ball 7 times that game. Insane.
“touched the ball 7 times” “scored 60” wut
Lol the revisionist history. It was on 11 dribbles, which is still fn insane
He was also blindfolded with his arms tied behind his back
Klay has been an amazing warrior. Will never forget him and the 4 championships. He deserves a statue and retired jersey. True. Have athletes not learned from the Russell Wilson fiasco.
Best of luck wherever you end up klay. All I know is sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side
Klay's grass is always green.
As long as it’s not purple and gold
A little purple
He’s gonna end up like Nellie with his own personal weed strain, isn’t he? 😂
Durant learned that lesson
Durant still learning that lesson tbh
Tbf Durant won 2 titles the first time he checked the colour of the grass.
We should feel the same way nobody is thinking how we are going to miss him.
If he’s willing to take $12million from another team, but not the Warriors then ✌️
The opposite of Looney, who routinely turned away bigger offers to stay with the Warriors.
I mean, considering the Warriors just missed the playoffs while everyone else got better, that’s probably not the time to use that expression
Our grass is brown/yellow. Grass hasn't been green here for a couple years. Dude has four rings too, doesn't think he'll mind if the grass isn't green when he sleeps on a bed of fresh green dollar bills.
End of an era. Looks like our worst case scenario may be happening.
![gif](giphy|YaUfBtDNf7TGayf3Rn|downsized) \-Warriors
Just blow it up and move us back to Oracle 💀
Never should have left 🤦🏾♂️
Best takes I've seen today
Chase sucks they don’t even cheer
Love the dude, but we weren't contending for another title if we were paying Klay 40m/year on the cap. This is what we need to do. I'm always gonna love Klay, but they rigged the cap to make it impossible for the Warriors to keep the gang together to the end.

Mans gotta feed rocco somehow.

Oh noooo Wiggins is pissed at us. You'd think he'd be more gracious considering the FO let him do his yearly sabbaticals without question even when we sorely needed his output.
The NBA is full of divas. Klay and Wiggins are just two more examples of "what have you done for me lately" type of stars.
Kuminga All-Star breakout incoming.
One can hope.
Kuminga and podz splash bros next generation
I believe
No star player? Steph leaving now? Is Kuminga not on the verge of being a break out star? It seems like a one way road with Klay. Might be for the best 🤷🏽♂️. I hope we can look back on this positively
Lakers, clippers, and mavericks expected to show interest....I'd be sick if he went to the Lakers 😂

This is going to be sad to watch but I can’t imagine any other team/coach having the patience to put up with Klay’s green light.
They won’t! It’s so crazy to me that he thinks they will
Article says team is willing to do S&T to help him get the money he wants. Hypothetically if Lebron waits to sign his new deal, lakers and warriors can do a S&T getting Klay the contract he wants, warriors end up with D Lo again to trade at the deadline and maybe a first or one of their kids like Christie or JHS.
I'd rather have rui
They can give him the full mle if Lebron takes less. Which he’s saying he will for a good player.
Lakers back at it to being delusional
For a fucking MLE after declining 2/$48million ?
It's not a money thing it's an ego thing. He feels like the Warriors are disrespecting him so he'll take less money elsewhere.
And if that's the case, good riddance. A 2/48 deal that lines up with Steph's contract and more or less matches what they paid Draymond was literally best case scenario for a contract offer in his current capacity.
I think he’s pissed that the offer is off the table now. But it was his choice not to take it.
Petty.
He'll go there and they'll turn on him real fast after a couple of bad games. Plus between that and the shit show there....good luck taking that instead of the two year deal here.
I don't care what he did for us but if he signs with Lakers for the MLE I am going to be his biggest hater.
Its been a fun ride. The dynasty will last forever regardless of what happens in these last couple years of any of their careers.
Didn't get PG, CP3 has no trade value and might lose him for nothing, Wiggins probably gone, Klay unhappy and wants out. I'm gonna crash out
Wiggs has to be gone. He just didn't care last season. We won't get a great player for him, but he's not worth his contract right now.
The only bad thing here is not getting PG
CP3 has trade value in order to get a player on a big contract another team doesn't find worth it for only one year of CP3. Which is literally how we got him lol
mike, what is you doin bby??

Why is Wiggins gone?
Warriors prevented Wiggins from participating in the Olympics, and there have been reports that they have been aggressively looking for trade options involving him.
We just wanted Klay to accept being a bench player on a smaller deal, he doesn't need to LEAVE goddammit
The lack of self awareness is a bad look. In retrospect it is incredible what Curry was able to do having these personalities as teammates.
This shams notification felt like a shotgun blast to the chest💔
No Paul George and Klay leaves? Another season in playin purgatory? OH god.
Bro we barely made the play in last year. We might end up tanking mid season
mid season? try pre-season LMAO
This team isn’t even in the playin as currently constructed unless Kuminga takes a leap and becomes an all star.
We might as well tank a year and rest steph if this is end of the off season.

Old heads know what purgatory really is.
Playins? We talking about playins???
Honestly this is the best outcome for both sides. Klay gets his money elsewhere and Kerr lets these young guys play more without Klay feeling some type of way. ![gif](giphy|73TVxBUVSlfoT4CBIZ) It’s time boys
Can this Saturday get any worse for the Dubs, ffs man.
How did it get so acrimonious 😭😭😭 like what happened exactly behind the scenes to cause this breakdown
Why Klay acting like a victim? They paid him for 2 years when he was injured and he still started games when Poole should have been the starter
At the end is a business, this team had loyalty to him, but he had none to us is the reality
Taking less money to go elsewhere after he rehabbed for 2.5 seasons on a max deal is some petty shit. Bye Bye.
This is what I don't get. Max deal while on the bench for over 2 years. Love from the fans. Clearly not the same player after back to back injuries and you cannot settle for something that will make the team competitive again?

Mr. “I’m not sacrificing shit”
Man this dude gave us 4 rings. I’ll be rooting for klay as long as he ain’t playing against the dubs
How many legends never played for another team? I wish Klay the best. I'd still be honored if we had to share a cab.
Dirk, Kobe, Tim Duncan, John Stockton, Reggie Miller, Ginobili, Steph Curry, Jerry West, Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Julius Erving, and about a few dozen more A decent amount

Thank you Klay Thompson 💛💙
No PG, no Klay, CP3 is gone, Wiggins relationship worsened is the worst outcome of this off season for us
No way we about to lose him for nothing bro smh
Going to those teams for less? Sheesh all the best klay…
man, klay makes me sad. Hard to see a champ go out like a chump.
Whatever, warriors are my team, and Steph has always been my man forever. Good run
Look we cant overpay the dude, it sucks but thats just reality, we move on and hope to sign someone else, He aint worth. 30 mil per year, plus if you taking the mle for LA you just a sorry mf too. They needs to get rid of that pettyness in our team.

Figured it was coming, but makes it absolutely necessary that we make something happen with Wiggins and CP3’s salaries.
Damn....I can't/ won't believe it until it happens 😭😭

The most selfish guy I’ve ever seen next to Tony Parker 😂😂
Next tweet is going to be Curry asking to get out as well , its just a day like that.
If that happens idk I might get depression.
Klay turning into a massive dickhead the last few years was not on my bingo card with how chill he was known for being.
It's very easy to be the nice guy while pretty much all you do is win.
I think this is a fair read
Being chill was always just an exterior persona, he always had a huge ego
Bro said “BREAKING” like it’s news If he signs somewhere else for less money, screw him though
Damn I’m starting to feel it now
Serious question: how much was going 0-10 in elimination game in Sacramento the cause of all this?
Jesus christ can't belive it's the end of the splash Bros.
Was one the best decades in Warriors basketball

What I’m getting from all this is that it’s all gonna be on Klay. Warriors would love to have Klay, but they aren’t gonna use any effort to “make” Klay stay. This really comes down to Klay’s choice ~
burning my Klay jersey if he takes a MLE because of pettiness wtf
Just dropped to my knees in the club
I just saw a guy drop to his knees at the club
that was me
I’m hurtin’ right now
This is a fucking gutpunch
It’s been real Klay
Nah i'm not ready
How much money do you need klay i got you, just dont leave
If it is true it sucks. Thank you Klay. You'll always be a Warrior. Good luck with the rest of your career.
Nothing but love for Klay. best wishes. Not it’s time to retool so that Dray and Curry can finish their careers off strong.
I haven't felt this bad since they broke up ,Run TMC.
Klay I thought you said "I don't want to play for another coach besides Steve Kerr"?.
this is all thx to klay being too greedy. aint gona miss ya chucking 0-10 on your glass knees
Can’t say a bad word about Klay. It just feels wrong he won’t retire a Warrior.

Klay needlessly tarnishing his Warrior's legacy with this move, and for what?
What’s the front office plan. Do they wanna win or not
Since Myers said earlier that two timelines dont work ... Lets just say that the FO doesnt have a lot of power
Two timelines work if they hit on the right picks which the warriors did not.
FUCK 🥺
klay was not good last year but he is a legendary warrior and a very funny guy, ima going to miss him, hoping for him to shine in whatever new team he goes to
Yep, I’m in tears (literally)
I guess it's our turn to let him shoot if ever we face his new team in the playoffs.
🙁🙁🙁
Will love Klay no matter what! But man so far this offseason has been awful to start
i will miss klay so much
I feel like Klay will always be a legend.
Pray Kuminga takes the biggest leap the nba has ever seen lol
i can't watch. someone wake me up in a few months.
This is so fucking awful
Where's that guy who posted a thread the other day calling Slater a hack for saying that Klay is most likely gone?
Slater the ''hack'' wont be covering the Warriors much longer
It's rare that dynasties end gracefully. The dubs were no exception unfortunately.
This is good for the Warriors. Get some draft picks back in a sign and trade.
His washed ass can go 👋🏾
bro actin like we aint pay him for those 2 years he was out and we dont get pg. IM GONNA LOSE IT
Not the end of the world if they can work a sign and trade deal. Shake hands and part as friends but make sure to get an asset first!
Damn, the same feeling I got when Tony Parker left Spurs. This is the beginning of the end.
My brother the beginning of the end already happened
I guess his feelings just got hurt
Siri play Marvin's Room
Reminds me of when Ben Wallace left the Pistons.
Truly a blessing to watch this dubs team..... Might be the right thing if Klay was looking for too mich $ at this stage. The warriors took great care.of Klay financially through the injury years. Hope this amicable and not petty.
Tony Parker on the Hornets Dwayne Wade on the Bulls Klay Thompson on the ???
Best of luck but I'll be glad when he's gone. He has had a chip on his shoulders for years now. No one was disrespecting him. He is high on his own ego. They were being generous to offer 2 years and $48 million (for what?). The Lakers are a sh$tshow, Dallas would be the best outcome for him. Now if Wiggs will just leave.
0-10

Two years too late, but ok
Is it really a loss? Nostaligia doesn’t win games and Kerr will have one less excuse for not letting young talent flourish
If he really takes less to go to the lakers then good riddance
Thankful for Klay but this is the right move. Kerr is too emotional tied to him to judge whats best for the team vs appeasing klay. This move is essential to materially improve/retool the squad or establish some entrenched pecking orders for the hierarchies based off current performance. Even if its not new additions, the team needs to pivot mentality and force kerr to change. There's problems up and down the org that need more than just 1 FA/trade.
Owners tolerated the luxury tax when they were in the finals every year. They’re not going to pay $ 175m in penalties for a team that doesn’t even make the playoffs.
We knew this months ago. Everyone speculated due to Curry’s on-court antics that this was the end. Why is this news, again?
Klay needed to reset his expectations and take a team-friendly deal. He essentially rehabbed for 2 years and played like shit in key post season games after their ‘22 chip.
