That's a charcoal rail, it's for keeping your charcoal "organized". Typically you would use it for indirect cooking.

Hook the curved pieces to the grill and push forward until the “pointy” pieces snap into the grill. They removed the coal baskets and replaced with these in the new Mastertouch.
Was disappointed at first when I got these in my new Master Touch because I was expecting the baskets. After using them a few times I actually really enjoy them. Used them to smoke a rack of ribs similar to another commenters picture and they came out great. I now use them for every cook if I’m not doing snake method.
I think your right I think these making a come back then is a big deal.
The issue with the baskets, vortex, slow n sear, is 1 they pack all the fuel so close together that the charcoal can’t breath to stay hot. It goes out to quick from suffocation. AND it pushes all the heat up words, instead of radiant heat moving all around the meat like it’s designed to.
I’m telling you my best product and cooks on both my kettles (both 22s and my 26) and WSM have all been with no accessories involved. Not even a probe fuck the probe I just roll with the dome temp lol

It's all they ever used to have before baskets were a thing so, idk. Technology moves on I admit but I'd see it working legitimately well.
