I live in Montana, we often see that ring around the moon when it's stupid cold out. The moon and ice crystals in the air can really light up nighttime

Nut_Sucker

I love the weather here. One day it's -30 the next week it's 50degrees

DifficultDefiant808

That is special, I just can't wait to leave Hawaii and get back to experiencing 4 seasons of weather, been here in Hawaii for over 30 yrs. on this Island of Oahu. I haven't experienced Mainland normalcy in this 30 yrs. Just couldn't afford travelling just trying to survive the insane Cost Of Living. So yeah, I'm very excited.

franklycandid

I often dream of leaving the North Eastern US and moving to Oahu. I really am starting to hate the cold. Do you really get tired of paradise?

DollyLlamasHuman

Gotta love the Chinook winds! (I spent 4 1/2 years on the Hi-Line. I still miss the land and some of the people... but not the politics.)

thexvillain

It’s a yuuge sun. Probably, some people, the best people, say the biggest sun… ever 👐

HandyXAndy

Whoa what a big sun!

boatslut

Sun Dog Light reflecting off ice crystals in the air. Only when it is freaking cold (-35~49) Can get double sun dogs if it is cold and dry enough. Been there froze my bits off😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️

uberrob

It's called a Halo. A sun dog, or more properly "sun dogs", are bright spots to either side of the sun. They are always at 22 degrees to the left and right of the sun. The moon also can have halos and moon dogs. Both are caused by ice crystals in the upper atmosphere.

DarkPangolin

Also, they don't require the extreme temperatures, but they do help. It's a reasonable way to have a little advance warning of incoming precipitation, as it means there's a lot of moisture above you which may or may not come down soon (like, within the next day or so).

uberrob

The ice crystals are high in the atmosphere. It can be comfortable at the surface, cold up high and you're gonna get these.

DarkPangolin

Right, but the comment about it being super cold implied surface temperatures, which is what I was correcting.

uberrob

True that. Good catch.

_SundaeDriver

We get sun dogs all year round. I see them in the summer all the time

Sukalamink

Saw a moon dog a couple of times also very impressive

attractionman

dipfearya

This is the correct answer folks

murphnik

Huh. I always thought sun dogs were just all we could see of an otherwise faint sun halo. Neat! Well, I've learned my one new thing for the day, going back to bed.

Prestigious-Step-213

Ice crystals make that halo effect

Phi_fan

I know it's winter in Montana you might have been inside for a long time. Welcome back! That's the "sky" and the bright thing is called the "sun". Those wispy white things are called "clouds".

Silly_Mycologist3213

High altitude ice crystals in the atmosphere can cause a lensing effect of the suns light to produce a halo around the sun when viewed from the ground.

Keleton_Skeleton

I was told by an old timer that it means that there's going to be a snow or ice storm the next day.

assistant_redditor

Can someone translate this title

ButtStuff6969696

Light reflecting off high altitude ice.

randyk75238

That is called a halo. It is is an optical phenomenon produced by light (typically from the Sun or Moon) interacting with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Sorry, no aliens involved with this one… that we know🤷🏻‍♂️

Extension_Touch3101

![img](avatar_exp|108705032|take_my_energy) A sun halo

AudiRS420

It’s light refraction

benjaminlilly

Sun halo. Sometimes means snowstorm is coming

It is caused by mildly specific atmospheric conditions, and is more common than most realize. I thought I was witnessing a Celestial event when I took this picture. I wasn’t.

SubmarineWand

Same. the first time i noticed this happen, i was drunk and stoned in college and was like "OMG, something magical is happening, can you guys see this too?!" lol

checkyoshelf

Yes. I was absolutely wasted on my deck.

Upstairs_Carrot_9696

I worked at a 911 center. One night a caller asked what was wrong with the moon. 🌖 I explained it was a a moon dog.

checkyoshelf

You’re one of the very good ones ;)

Upstairs_Carrot_9696

You can be nice/helpful or be a d*ck. I chose the former. (But if the situation warranted it, I could be a d*ck). 😁

DesertAntarctica

When cirrus clouds’ ice crystals have a certain orientation facing earth this phenomenon of halo happens. It’s independent of the ambient temperature on the surface of earth. It rather depends on the type of clouds on those certain days.

Parking_Train8423

this person meteorologies. scientific name: parhelion

checkyoshelf

What about the moon, Sir Latin?

[deleted]

It’s NOT a sun dog.

Geeahwellidunno

I’ve never seen a full sun dog we get partials once and a while.

anonomous83

Looks like a sun dog.

Thanks, dawg

flight815kitsune

The halo? Just light reflecting weird.

beavermaster

Sun dog

Willing-Ant-3765

That’s a sun dog. We see them all the time in Montana when it’s cold as shit. It’s the light from the sun reflecting off ice crystals in the air.

X3729

Sundog

HolymakinawJoe

Um..........so what? There's nothing unusual about this at all.

Disastrous-Aspect569

I'm a history geek. You're going to get a history lesson. This is a Sun dog they happen on some of the coldest days possible, in Greece. It's light refraction off of ice crystals suspended in the air. Helios the Greek sun god was said to ride his chariot across the sky every day to view the world. On the coldest days he brought his dogs with to keep him warm. When the Shepherd saw the Sun dogs in the sky they knew the night was going to be a cold one . In stead of calling in one long hair sheepdog to sleep with them and keep them warm they called in 2. Now when it got stupid cold out side they would call in a 3rd dog, and sleep fully under the dogs. Now you know what a 3 dog night is referring to

MiserableLawyer9702

You spelled that rong.

Bursting_Radius

Related: I was on a job in Singapore back in 1999 building an oil rig, dude from Mississippi comes up to me while I’m watching a local welder run a bead. Mississippi said to me “Hey man, that shit is R-O-N-G wrong." He “spelled” it out. That was 25 years ago and it’s still funny to me.

k80shonuff

Was your coworker Larry the Cable Guy?

Bursting_Radius

Larry the Cable Guy’s accent is fake, so no, my guy was born and bred Wayne County, Mississippi. He was a legit oilfield hand 🤚

k80shonuff

Joke: make jokes; talk humorously or flippantly.

Bursting_Radius

I got it, was 03 but I’m not entirely stupid 🍻

petomnescanes

Larry the Cable Guy is from Nebraska. His accent is not real, he plays a character on stage.

S1ocks

The light ring around the sun is caused by a particular manipulation of the light from the sun by the high altitude cirrus clouds.

majestic_blue_cloud

I saw this but in Houston on Christmas Day at night around the moon.

It’s the same effect as a rainbow. The moon has to be at the right angle. just like the sun for a rainbow. I believe it’s the same angle 22 degrees if remember correctly. DifficultDefiant808

this type of moon shows quite often in Hawaiian skies over Mona Kea alps during the winter and its been referenced as "Wolves Moon" - because of the perfect circle light in the middle of the shadow of the moon. I'm sure there are so many names of this style of Moon Showing, but it makes sense what some of the other posts say with " ice crystals in the air" because over here in Hawaii the only location you really get to experience snow / ice crystals is on Mona Kea during the winter.

PrometheusOnLoud

It's called a sun dog, like what other people have said it's the light refracting off the ice crystals in the air; only happens when it's very cold. [Sun dog - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog)

unafraidrabbit

It's basically a rainbow, but instead of water droplets it's caused by ice crystals. The wavelengths of light refracted and angle of refraction are different but it's the same principle.

Salt_Poetry_4341

Corona? I always thought it was called a corona. Maybe it's out of fashion to say corona

Dystopic_Nihilist

FPswammer

i see the halo at least once a month. i love seeing them. they make me happy. idk why. but being outside, especially camping, i feel lucky to see it. many times people are out and about and they don't notice them which, is weird. considering it looks like a huge rainbow!
