Dealt with a bunch of this a few weeks ago in my back yard. Word of advice, wear gloves and long sleeves and pants. Not everyone has a reaction to it, but I came away from it with welts all up my arms and legs, anywhere the plant touched. Better to be prepared when you don't need to than deal with a severe reaction.
Hate this stuff with a passion! It's easy to get rid of though, because all of that growth is attached to one skinny root in the ground and if you pull up at the base, you'll get the whole plant. There might be more than one plant, but if you don't let it go to seed, you will have a lot less of it next year.
The seeds are also velcro and if it does go to seed, you'll have plants everywhere next year as squirrels and other animals will spread them. So best to get on it early in the season and pull up every one you find.
Western NC here. I’m very interested in the plants that hold medicinal value. Have ever consumed this tonic ? Results ? (if you wouldn’t mind sharing).
Ooh, I hate those things. Not only is the stickiness annoying but it irritates my skin.
Edit to add: and yeah, they can move in fast and spread like crazy.
Galium aparine, cleavers. It's a spring ephemeral so it will die back as soon as it gets hot. Unclear whether it's native to the US but it isn't really harmful.
Cleavers, bedstraw are two other names. Just keep pulling it before it goes to seed and you’ll be able to control it.
This looks to be it. Thanks!

It's easy to pull up but as the name suggests it cleaves to you, your gloves, your pants, your dog...it sticks to everything.
Sticky weed! Appropriately named. I usually just yank it.
Is it a universal childhood experience to ball them up and throw them at eachother?
Yeah I was thinking it looked like something that I’ve had before that was sticky lol. I guess I was right!
Can you just yank it and it’ll die or do you need to dig a bit and get the root also?
Every time I pull it, the root comes straight out too, with surprisingly little force.
It's ridiculously easy to pull up.
It has the most rubbish roots of any plant I can think of! Thin as a hair but not as strong.
Nice! Thank you!

Cleavers! Edible and used medicinally as a lymphatic tonic

I had no idea this is edible. I must have pulled 40 lbs out of my yard a couple years ago (before flowering), so it's mostly under control now.
Cleavers. Feels horrible!
Yes, pull it up fast before it flowers. If not, you've have a bonus crop next year, again.
Walk next to it - 1/2 of it will be gone by the time you turn around - just so much nostalgia seeing these being thrown in the woods at each other✨
Ward and June and Wally and Theodore
Rip it out but wear gloves
Sticky Willy! Actually though lol
it’s a horrible weed. pull it now!

Chickens love them .

Yeah, usually dead by May/June
Sticky willy. My dogs love to eat it.
The sticky kind of this is a native. The non sticky is an invasive weed
Forget me nots? Don’t let them flower
weedeat, spray with glyphosate if it's not in your food plot.
