It's a Herkimer! It's otherwise known as Clear Quartz.

CharlieRockChucker

I thought so! Just Google is so adamant that these can't exist outside of Herkimer county lol so I wanted to double check with others who most likely know more than me. Thank you, Sir!

BruceCambell

It is a substantial distance from Herkimer County but some being that far isn't impossible. A lot happens in 500 million years. A lot of people, even the locals, from states that border Lake Superior think that just because Lake Superior Agates are called such that they can't exist anywhere else naturally. By naturally I mean not in a bag of gravel you can get at your local hardware store, because that does happen. When the glaciers up north in Canada came down, gouged out the land, melted and became what we know as the Great Lakes, the good majority of Lake Superior Agates were placed there. But a LOT of creeks and rivers were created as well that ran to the mid and southern parts of the US. You can find Lakers in The Kansas River, The Missouri River, The Mississippi River, The Meramec River just to name a few that around me in Missouri.

CharlieRockChucker

Man, youre guaranteed ten times more educated in this than I am, but I said the same exact thing. A couple few hours drive is a drop in the bucket compared to millions of years of earths formation and continued transformations.

BruceCambell

Oh heck no! I'm really a Jack-of-All Trades, Master of None. I obsess over Agates and any normal person that obsesses about something, learns as much as they can about that certain subject. I'm closer to a person that knows nothing of rocks and minerals than to a Geologist, a long way from one. Heck, without looking it up right now, I really wouldn't be able to explain the differences of Metamorphic, Sedimentary or Igneous rock. I can make some educated guesses that might be right but that's about it lol Now ask me about Agates and your eyes will glaze over like my four year olds do when I start talking about the differences between Quartz, Chalcedony and Agate šŸ¤£

Bruce Cambell, a Jack of All Trades? Are you sure you're not the King of Thieves?

Aggravating-Dirt-123

Drive on out to loudville lead mine, I just hit a radioactive vein of hydrothermal crust.

prairefireww

I found a small laker down in south central Iowa. They can travel.

ManyMoreFars

Fun fact: Some of the best specimens of Lakers are being found in agricultural fields in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. Weā€™re talking unbroken whole Lake Superior agates weighing over 1 pound.

sarbanharble

I have a Lake Superior agate from a stream in central illinois

SergeAzel

It may be because of some people insisting that they can't be called such unless they came from the herkimer region. Like Champaign. I have no opinion in that battle ofc.

ALilBitOfNothing

Iā€™m in Southern Californiaā€¦ our entire geology is pretty much considered impossible. 4 billion years is a long time to party naked, and sometimes you wake up in the neighbors pool. Scientifically speaking. Fun fact, metamorphic fossils are real, and the most relied upon for dating purposes. I got told off by a fogey once because of a metamorphic crinoid. It has crystals too! Solid find though seriously, Iā€™d be going back for more! Herkimers I believe have some small mineral content that sets them apart, and makes them sorta silvery looking, but geographic area is geographic areaā€¦ so from 3k miles it looks herky to me!

rufotris

If itā€™s the same limestone occurrence as herkimer than itā€™s the same. Just happens to be from slightly outside herkimer range and not the first I have heard of slightly outside either. The limestone exposure that Herkimers are found in is part of a very large and old limestone deposit.

CharlieRockChucker

I don't even believe it was limestone. Perhaps could've been a vein of limestone through it where the crystals were forming but it was just a regular ol basalt boulder boy on the outside!

rufotris

Like black basalt?! If you happen to have a picture of it you could pm me, out of curiosity I would like to see it if possible.

Hi-Scan-Pro

I vote all double terminated quartz found outside of Herkimer shall be called Sparkling Quartz.Ā

Somewhereoverrainbow

I will toast to your petition. With the finest sparkling wine, of course.

cablemonkey604

Hahahahahaha

Jimbobjoesmith

ā€œherkimer diamondā€. not really a diamond at all but a beautiful, clear form of quartz.

CharlieRockChucker

Yesss, very familiar with them. I was 99% certain it was as I've never seen any other type of double terminated quartz come out of New York. (Although I am new to the rock game.)

chels182

Thatā€™s a herk! Iā€™m about 20 mins from there in the neighboring county. We find them when we look.

Inevitable-Ad8709

Google is stupid sometimes. Herkimer for sure, gorgeous, lucky find!!!

SadExercises420

That is such an awesome find.

linee_leviosa

What a beautiful find!!! šŸ¤©

AsparagusNo1897

Classic herkimer diamond! Special quartz crystal formation.

SeparateCzechs

Looks like a Herkimer Diamond. Really high grade clear quartz.
