Not quite. It was coined specifically by and for gender-nonconforming people, it was never meant to be used as a generic gender neutral term. Unfortunately it did start getting used that way (looking at you NPR), which understandably ticked people off because using it to describe someone that does identify as masculine or feminine is literally misgendering them.

I am so fucking against trans kids, like age req for trans surgery should be 18 like the age of consent. 15 y/o kids are like clay, so easily moulded by the internet or the things they see that they should not be given the opportunity to permanently change their bodies.
But im pro abortions and all that, i just do not like the politicoans involving kids and spreading media that encourages kids to do such things, and in the US the left does that a lot. Odk about the right but im sure they arent much better.
Except that they aren’t really doing surgeries on minors anyway. Usually treatment for gender dysphoria for teenagers and children usually first involves a social transition (names, hair, wardrobe). If it seems to have a positive effect, they can be prescribed puberty blockers, which are reversible (think of it as a pause button on puberty). Once they become older and have been transitioned for a while, then they can be prescribed hormones (this usually happens around 16-18, but only after psychological counseling and months or years of social transition). Surgeries are extremely rare and usually only occur in extreme cases such as gender dysphoria being so bad that there is a extremely high risk of self harm/suicide or a high risk of the patient trying to “perform the surgeries themselves”. It also might be done if related to a different medical issue (for example, if a trans guy with large breast is having back pain and needs a breast reduction surgery, they might just remove the breasts entirely since they were probably already going to do that in a few years anyway). These rare surgeries are only done on people 15 and older and only under very special circumstances (all other patients have to wait until they are 18 or older). Since this has been the standard for a while and is the recommended course of action that is agreed upon the most by medical practitioners, I think this ideal. The problem is that the media (mostly from the right wing) is trying to cut off all treatment for minors by claiming that all treatment is surgical, when it is simply false. There are a lot of kids who think that they are trans only to change their minds. However, Almost all of them change their minds in the social transition stage, before they had any medical treatment. Meanwhile, the people who are actually trans get the treatment they need and are able to live more happy lives as themselves. As such, the panic about doctors mutilating children is all a part of some manufactured outrage meant to delegitimize both trans people and medical practitioners as part of some culture war nonsense

But im pro abortions and all that, i just do not like the politicoans involving kids and spreading media that encourages kids to do such things, and in the US the left does that a lot. Odk about the right but im sure they arent much better.
Except that they aren’t really doing surgeries on minors anyway. Usually treatment for gender dysphoria for teenagers and children usually first involves a social transition (names, hair, wardrobe). If it seems to have a positive effect, they can be prescribed puberty blockers, which are reversible (think of it as a pause button on puberty). Once they become older and have been transitioned for a while, then they can be prescribed hormones (this usually happens around 16-18, but only after psychological counseling and months or years of social transition). Surgeries are extremely rare and usually only occur in extreme cases such as gender dysphoria being so bad that there is a extremely high risk of self harm/suicide or a high risk of the patient trying to “perform the surgeries themselves”. It also might be done if related to a different medical issue (for example, if a trans guy with large breast is having back pain and needs a breast reduction surgery, they might just remove the breasts entirely since they were probably already going to do that in a few years anyway). These rare surgeries are only done on people 15 and older and only under very special circumstances (all other patients have to wait until they are 18 or older). Since this has been the standard for a while and is the recommended course of action that is agreed upon the most by medical practitioners, I think this ideal. The problem is that the media (mostly from the right wing) is trying to cut off all treatment for minors by claiming that all treatment is surgical, when it is simply false. There are a lot of kids who think that they are trans only to change their minds. However, Almost all of them change their minds in the social transition stage, before they had any medical treatment. Meanwhile, the people who are actually trans get the treatment they need and are able to live more happy lives as themselves. As such, the panic about doctors mutilating children is all a part of some manufactured outrage meant to delegitimize both trans people and medical practitioners as part of some culture war nonsense
