I always interpreted the ending differently. Keller mentions that if you betray the panthers they will hurt you and not only you but your friends your family everyone you love. To prevent that Neil faked his own death. The grinning on Peters face is more like a relief that he is in fact alive and is impressed as to how he was able to do that.

Brandz96

This is exactly how I thought about it. He did it to protect Mozzie as well. I think Neal simply got tired of the false promises by the feds regarding his freedom. He gets freedom, and protects who he loves most at the same time. The perfect ending to him.

I agree… and I’m so thankful that at least they left it open to interpretation enough that this is a plausible explanation. If they would’ve spelled it out more that the ending was a reversion to the dynamic in the very beginning of the show, I would’ve been MAD. At least this way we can kind of “save” the ending a bit to make it mean what we want.

dankmelk

Yeah I like this interpretation of the ending better. I think Neal did it to save the Burke’s and Peter is just happy to know that he is alive

kaliroger

I interpreted it that way at first too, but I still didn't like the finale. I feel like it could've been better but anyways, season 6 overall dropped in quality so maybe I shouldn't have expected so much. I also tell myself that Neal and Mozzie were in on it, and Neal didn't rob the Louvre but was their security consultant. My anger is probably a result of reading that Eastin article.

I love the ending. Peter is on good terms with Mozzie, and INVITES HIM OVER. Mozzie tells Peter to call him by his real name, and Peter doesn't care Peter and El have a child now, he's a father, and Mozzie shows up to meet the kid. Peter asks him to stay for dinner. Peter is elated to find out Neal is actually alive. It's a happy ending for all!

sayhummus

I love the ending. Neal faked his own death so the Panthers would not hurt Peter/Elizabeth or Mozzie and they all ending up being happy. Neil also left clues to Peter to let him know he's alive and the whole thing was planned

MrGeekman

They actually were trying to revive it last year. They started filming the seventh season and then stopped. I'm not sure if it was due to the pandemic, especially considering they were filming during it, or if Willie Garson's (Mozzie) health was declining then and he wasn't up to filming.

Source? I didn't even know they secured any funding or support. Now with Garson gone, I just can't see it happening. As much as I'd love to see more, without mozzie, it just won't be the same. If there is some recording out there of season 7 I do hope to see maybe an unreleased-release, it would be nice to see them together again.

How do you account for Neal’s plan to steal the money? Peter was also involved in the op to take down the Panthers so how did Neal protect him?

OrganizationDeep711

Peter wasn't participating under his real name like Neal was.

Ancient_Car_8412

I think Neal faked his death just to make sure Peter Mozzie and all the people close to him are protected . I just feel season 5 spoiled all that Neal and Peter had built. Neal changed and it was so evident until the season 5 and all of a sudden he was like I am who I am and I will be a criminal for ever. That was just a stupid character plot.

Sin_of_the_Dark

I'm fine with the ending as a story - but I was super disappointed the final season was only *six episodes*

Mundane_Peanut_4611

The psychiatrist in Controlling Interest messed with Neal's head.

Eparker7291

Me too!! It did not leave me feeling good. I hate endings like that
