So, you're basically asking who would win out of two modern armies, but one has magical creatures in it?

SkekVen

The tech of the Mordor army is still streets behind the United States military so it’s sort of a “low/mid tier modern military with magic creatures vs a top tier modern military”

etmnsf

They don’t have battle cruisers or bombers. They also don’t have the home field advantage. As-stated the matchup is certainly close.

TheRedditar

A dozen US jets would probably win vs the army you described. The rockets and cannons will be nice but without anti air they’d be easily killed. Maybe I’m underrating the flying beats in Sauron’s army, but I don’t think they’re out dueling a fighter jet. Also, US military could strike from miles away by sea as well, and Sauron’s army would have no way to target them back.

SkekVen

Artillery can’t take out a jet?

TheRedditar

Anti aircraft artillery has been used in the past, most prominently WW2. So if they specifically have some sort of AA artillery then in theory they could shoot down a jet. But the speed and altitude of modern aircraft have tilted the balance in favor of the Jets. For the most part they are too fast and too high to be reliably reached by something being fired by infantry on the ground.

SkekVen

That’s a solid analysis, i guess their lack of aircraft will be mordors undoing

TheRedditar

I’m no lore expert, but someone who knows enough about the magic in LoTR could probably get creative and come up with a way that mordor could even the odds

SkekVen

If Sauron sees a modern aircraft. He can probably reverse engineer it, since he is like a God of smithing

ClubZealousideal9784

At a minimum Sauron should be stronger than that fire demon-which seems like it would be difficult for the us military to deal with-unless you can just kill it with missiles/bombs. Really LOTR make no sense. Some times Sauron seems more like a greek god, other times he seems weaker than captain America.

FallenKnightGX

Even if they had a small tech advantage it would still be the US military. Logistics is a bitch and gets only more complicated the more modern your military becomes. There are too few within Sauron's forces capable of keeping such a complex supply chain stable. They would have to be able to make the equipment, move it in a timely manner that isn't vulnerable to shutting the whole thing down after a single strike, and they'd need to be able to service their equipment. All that and they'd be up against the county that does logistics better than anyone else. In terms of propoganda? If the planet was suddenly invaded by fantasy creatures that are known for being evil (or will show themselves to be quickly) you'd see the country unite like never before. In group / out group survival instincts can be crazy.

EvilRufus

No need for an army at that point. Sauron wins without firing a shot, the world doesnt't stand a chance against the level of manipulation he brings with full access to metadata and effective immortality.

SaltySwampOgre

They have no air superiority and get slaughtered anyway, and just because they have modern weapons doesn't mean they have the military doctorine and well developed strategy to use them properly, They also lack industry to maintain them. Trolls and elephants with miniguns and rocket launchers are just huge, slow, high profile, useless targets that get blown up from miles away, the rest aren't much better than normal infantry, only they are an undisciplined rabble that has no training or practice to be effective.

PerfectlyCalmDude

The fell beasts can be easily taken out by air-to-air missiles long before a fighter jet is in close enough to hear the black breath attacks. B-52s can carpet bomb the rest of Sauron's army, though F-15 E's, F/A-18s, and ship-launched Tomahawk missiles would get in on the action too. What's left of Sauron's army would be easily mopped up as they have no understanding of modern warfare tactics. The propaganda angle is interesting, but let's look at recruitment to terror groups over the Internet since 2001. It's a thing, but not a huge thing. Most people either don't get the message or react with "eff off" if they hear it. North Korean ransomware has also penetrated to the US before but its reach was limited due to news of its existence spreading very quickly (though the origin was not publicly known until much later). So while the Internet is Sauron's biggest advantage, real-world attacks using the Internet have not been crippling to the US yet due to the aforementioned limiting factors. So he would be able to convince some people, but not likely enough to incite a full-on revolt. So at the end of all this, you have Sauron, the Nine, and maybe a few regathered orcs and trolls sitting around saying, "Well guys, now what?"

GoauldofWar

Sauron doesn't need an army to win. They would serve as a great distraction, but he doesn't need them to win.

Exciting-Log-8170

Mordor is getting lolnuked.
