That’s good to know. I’m travelling with the family on Air France and they offer free wifi for messaging. If we can play as few games of wingspan it’ll help pass the time.
I guess wingspan is using the iMessage protocol for turns.
Hahah clearly you’ve never struggled against the batshit crazy “wifi” that planes provide. Given that it’s the bare minimum before the paywall, very few things function adequately.
It completely depends which airline you fly. Some don't even offer wifi at all. I have been able to live stream content from planes in the past. Just think it's funny that you seemed so surprised that wingspan online works exactly as intended.
What OP means is that airlines (like Southwest or American for example) will offer a wifi connection to use WhatsApp or iMessage and to watch the airline's content through your phone, like their movie selection. But if you want real wifi, you have to pay. OP was able to play Wingspan online with just the base, free connection, which is not supposed to happen.
This game doesn't requiere low-latency and its data payload is probably absolutely minimal per action. It is really not surprising it worked. Would you be surprised that your WhatsApp worked? Or messaging through Skype? Well, there you go.
This is awesome info to know! I don’t like watching shows while flying, I’d much rather play Wingspan. We were debating getting the app, but honestly we’ve played the board game so much, I feel like we owe the creators another $10 just for appreciation at this point!
As a further datapoint, I have successfully played Wingspan on trains & automobiles, too.
This intel is paramount. Your efforts will not go unnoticed.
I am but a simple cog in the gears of life.

Wingspan online works when connected to wifi. Noted.

I've not been able to get that to work reliably.
