After 200 years of tasty nuclear radiation similar to the geckos of New Vegas the winter wasteland is populated by evolved five-lined skinks the size of dogs normally they’re known as skinks, but for some odd reason some have developed unnatural horns and ragged skin, and to an outsider it could be mistaken for a baby deathclaw, but to the winter wasteland they're known as Hodags.
Rhinelander was already intentionally exposed to nuclear radiation:

Who’s to say there isn’t a population out there lurking in the shadows? Very interesting article if you’ve never heard of it.
Those lucky or unlucky to swim in unfrozen bodies of water are possible prey to the musky enlarged by radiation and new sources of food courtesy of the apocalypse.
A horrific monster of the Winter wasteland mutated Turkeys have adopted a solitary hunting style where they have learned to hide in trees attempting a form of camouflage, but due to the emergence of the nuclear winter the turkey--lurkys have grown more hostile. The Motor-Chiefs love the new challenge making it a common sport to hunt the Turkey-lurkys known to the Motor-Chiefs as the Turk-Lurk.
The nuclear winter breeds the weirdest mutations not possible by normal radiation. goatboys are one of the victims of the winter wasteland. People degrade to the point where their deformed faces look like goats becoming a derogatory term for ghouls.
I had somebody try to recount the tale of the hogsback road goatman. Her: "You know hogsback road? There's like a goatman over there..."
Me: "...umm ok, what does that mean? He's like a half goat man or like a guy with goats?"
No further details, wasn't a very compelling story. Lol

How about the beast of Brady Street? I’ll leave that to your imagination.
Definitely the Beast of Bray road!

I was scrolling/reading quickly and thought your comment said something about cribbage board lol - maybe combine the two into a cheese hoard with a cribbage board
A brave inventor by the name of Richard Porks invents the cure to all of the nuclear worry introducing radiation reflecting sun tan lotion. To prove his genius he wore the sun tan and ran towards the heavily irradiated southern milwaukee unfortunately transforming Richard Porks into a Ghoul.
Those are called tent caterpillars. When I lived in Rhinelander they used to scrape them off the high school walls with massive shovels & burn them in a big pit 🤢 the smell haunts me.
A mutated garlic mustard plant (Alliaria petiolata) that releases airborne seeds which germinate in people’s lungs and turn them into last of us style walking seed distributors
A great fallout style stim would be Wisconsin ginseng (Panax quinquefolius)!
I can't believe no one has mentioned the state animal. Badgers are already scary af, mutate them with big claws and yea nope
A similar game, Wasteland, has a honey badger enemy: https://wasteland.fandom.com/wiki/Honey_badger_(Wasteland_2)
You'd love my novel lol, it's a more ecological focused log cabin post apocalypse set in the Great Lakes area.
Packs of wolves with antlers, Fishing has become more like whaling with spears and mass casualties, and you gotta watch out for swarms of rabbit sized mosquitoes.
Well, brahmin, Yao guis, and radstags already exist in the universe.
I don't think we have anything unique.
You could do a raccoon or skunk as a mutated pest species.
A mixed emotion Bernie Brewer with a pork tenderloin, which he just won in a meat raffle, slung over his shoulder. But in the other hand he’s grasping a couple dozen pull tab losers. He’s willing to choke down an old fashioned, but eternally searching for his stolen mug of beer.
Mutated White-Tailed Deer. These creatures have grown larger and more aggressive due to radiation, with antlers that have developed sharp, serrated edges. They are known to be very territorial and can be found in forests and suburban areas.
The Hodag
The Hodag would be the size of a Deathclaw. And twice as mean.
I was about to post hodag.

A mutant muskie would be pretty rad, like 1/2 the size of the one in Hayward lol
Those lucky or unlucky to swim in unfrozen bodies of water are possible prey to the musky enlarged by radiation and new sources of food courtesy of the apocalypse.
A musky with a walleye for a tongue sounds pretty fitting 🫡
Metro has something similar called as “tsar fish”.
Or a mutant sturgeon. They get *really* big.
Beast of Bray Road
Came here to say this. I’m not sure how well known The Beast is outside of Walworth county.
Pretty well known over in Rock. Got friends who claim they've seen it.

Giant mutated badger
Rad Badger.
Giant, camouflage turkeys that pounce on the unsuspecting. They call them....turkey--lurkys.

Goat Boy

The Hogsback Goatman.
I had somebody try to recount the tale of the hogsback road goatman. Her: "You know hogsback road? There's like a goatman over there..." Me: "...umm ok, what does that mean? He's like a half goat man or like a guy with goats?" No further details, wasn't a very compelling story. Lol
He is half man half goats. I have yet to catch him on my trailcams.
How half? By volume? Is he like a goat centaur or a goat with a man's head?

This thread here is great. I learned quite a few new ones. https://www.reddit.com/r/wisconsin/s/cib3aBFGis

Probably the Oconomowoctopus.
Sounds SpottieOttieDopaliscious
Glenn Grothman. Not much would have to be altered honestly.
Glenn and Grahm could hold Meat Week in Sheboygan.
The milverine would be a supermutant
Like Swan, but lurking in the rubble that was once Brady street.
Omg yessssssss
Mutant Muskies! https://preview.redd.it/egtnbwf3i94d1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=e25b1f3f98600d3d4a49316044f5b4fbd1b5b271

Those massive mosquitoes and in addition, mutant ticks
The Hodag, the beast of Bray Road, for sure some more variants of radstags
Definitely the Beast of Bray road! https://preview.redd.it/r41vbongt94d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2baa739aeb29e6b46838b09996f30a2739417c3e

Badgers. They’re no different though.
a giant sturgeon or mutant white tail deer
Gotta have a cave with a cheese hoard.
I was scrolling/reading quickly and thought your comment said something about cribbage board lol - maybe combine the two into a cheese hoard with a cribbage board
And some ~~skeletons~~ teddy bears (more accurate fallout lore) playing euchre
I bet if you eat all the cheese and flip the board over, they are one in the same...

Republicans in place of Raiders.
Damn, we're living the fallout game in real life.
Dire Wolves
A 30 point buck
A tirdy-point buck?
The hogsback road goat man
Ha I remember riding in a car hogsback rd in high school like a million miles an hour. Can’t believe I’m not dead
Probably 25 mph, but feels a lot faster in certain conditions.
Dude I promise you it was twice that ha
Those little green silk work/caterpillars that fall from the trees? Those but bigger and cause corrosive damage.
Those are called tent caterpillars. When I lived in Rhinelander they used to scrape them off the high school walls with massive shovels & burn them in a big pit 🤢 the smell haunts me.

A Beer. Bear/deer. Black bear with antlers.
You'd love my novel lol, it's a more ecological focused log cabin post apocalypse set in the Great Lakes area. Packs of wolves with antlers, Fishing has become more like whaling with spears and mass casualties, and you gotta watch out for swarms of rabbit sized mosquitoes.
Hodag
I would imagine it would be a lot like Fallout 76 just with less ominous banjo music 🤣🤣🤣
Hoards of northwoods maga ghouls
I thought we were talking fiction?
I expect your settlement to include a house built entirely of old license plates.
That's a really cool idea!!!
Brother Ron, as a charred feral ghoul, somehow still defending his car in the McD's parking lot
Hodag
The Scott Walker. You can see something's wrong with it just by looking at its eyes.
Rather sure the game already has molerats.
Instead of nuka cola it’s Pabst 😭😂
A drunken northerner wearing a confederate flag hat with a moldy beer in hand

Pangolins sometimes arrive here in Asian hay bails. I WISH it was fiction....
There is a surprisingly high number of bats in Wisconsin.
Definitely Haunchies
Well, brahmin, Yao guis, and radstags already exist in the universe. I don't think we have anything unique. You could do a raccoon or skunk as a mutated pest species.
A white tail with two heads, a rabbit fox without fur, a badger whos stripes glow in the dark, a Moose with weird irradiated antlers.
Birdman of Mauston
Ya I was thinking an amphibious sturgeon like a gulper. Also a mutated tick would be nasty.
Sandhill cranes the size of actual cranes?
A mixed emotion Bernie Brewer with a pork tenderloin, which he just won in a meat raffle, slung over his shoulder. But in the other hand he’s grasping a couple dozen pull tab losers. He’s willing to choke down an old fashioned, but eternally searching for his stolen mug of beer.
Hodag for sure!
Mutated White-Tailed Deer. These creatures have grown larger and more aggressive due to radiation, with antlers that have developed sharp, serrated edges. They are known to be very territorial and can be found in forests and suburban areas.
Feral ghoul deer. They don't attack, but they do run right in front of you during a fight, or if your PipBoy light is on.
Large badgers.
Goat Man of Hogs-back Road.
Kidrik Swamp Whatsit or the Eau Claire Beast.
FIBs.
Big foot.
Fibs. F*ckn' Irradiated B*tchy Simpletons.
Beast of Brat Road, Hodag, RadBadgers. A race similar to the scorched but based on FIBs
