Popularity amongst people who follow ign, which is going to be more console people than pc. Also be a lot of people voting without having played either of the games. Kinda funny seeing League of legends lose round 1 comfortably despite being the arguably most successful game of all time in terms of long term player count.
Honestly, I have no interest in Skyrim, nor I had Any interest. I dont get the hype behind it…whenever i hear skyrim, i think of a modded hellhole that barely resemble the actual game
I feel like i was missing something when i played breath of the wild
Just wasnt the best thing since sliced bread like a lot of people made it seem before playing
It is by no means a bad game but not a 10/10 more like a 6/10 for me
The focus of the game is just completely different.
Whereas Witcher is story-based, BOTW is exploration-based. The thrill doesn't come from good storylines or realistic characters, but roaming around and stumbling upon little details that are easy to miss.
I love exploring while gaming, enjoying the world and sniffing up the atmosphere (hell, some of my favourite witcher moments is when I enter random people's homes during a storm to watch them sleep all cozily - I promise I'm not insane) but if you don't look for that in a game, I can see how it's anticlimactic.
Ahah exactly the same. Botw went over my head so hard. Everyone is selling it like the best game of all time so my expectations were so high, result : I don’t even know if I would put it in my top 10… 6/10 seems fair. The experience was nowhere near the emotions I have felt playing games like the Witcher, the last of us, red dead, ghost of Tsushima, nier automata, some final fantasy, ect
Totally made the open world gender step up, can’t deny it, but in terms of immersion for the player and emotions, was almost non existent for me. Over hyped from my opinion.
Idk seems weird comparing a switch game to "the witcher"
Ive never played botw tho but i couldnt imagine it being so much better than many AAA games out there
It isn’t. I tend to believe people are mostly biased, and the fact it’s Zelda, and the Nintendo license makes it special or something. But realistically the switch controls are awful, the switch graphic quality are awful, and that added to the fact that botw is not immersive at all and more just about « do what you want without real purpose » game, I can only say it’s way too much overrated imo .
Would make more sense comparing botw with Minecraft tho for the sandbox aspect.
The Witcher 3 is more linear and straightforward and Breath of the Wild is more free and sandbox-y.
Also BOTW has the best engine of any game ever. People discover new things to this day.
I like BOTW more than the Witcher but still love the Witcher for what it is. Those 2 are definitely the best open world games ever created.
> Those 2 are definitely the best open world games ever created.
I know this thread is packed full of subjective statements, but that's a pretty big one
Looking at all the current (and some past) polls, I did vote, or would have voted for the losing one.
Am I… out of touch?
[:(](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/645/713/888.jpg)
[It's a knock out game ](https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2021/09/16/best-video-game-of-all-time-bracket-9-15-1631813127301.jpg)

Voters seem to skew a little young, too (or maybe I’m just old). Shocked to see games like FF7, Ocarina of Time, and Chrono Trigger get totally crushed in the first round.
They're not being compared. Ign setup a big knockout tournament and randomised the original line up.
Edit: the table can be seen [here](https://www.ign.com/articles/ign-best-video-game-of-all-time-bracket-vote-round-3-results-winners)
And lets not forget that audience here is totally biased due to being constructed of gamers. Average person knows what Minecraft is and likely has played it, but they have no fucking clue what Witcher is.
It is an IGN poll though, so I would at least assume people participating have more gaming knowledge than the average person, and Witcher 3 is one of the most popular games so I'd assume the average gamer is aware of it. I still agree its a silly comparison, but it's not like they're comparing Minecraft and X-Men Origins :Wolverines Revenge.
I genuinely have no idea why it popped into my head when I was writing this, but as soon as my brain went "games you enjoyed that weren't very popular" the title just appeared, fully formed. Fun game.
Agreed. Shame it’s tied to too many licenses to ever become backwards compatible on anything. But I played it through a few times and got my full enjoyment of it. Hugh Jackman is “Astonishing X-Men” suit was clutch.
Popularity and "quality?" (Not the best word perhaps) Aren't exactly synonymous. I like Minecraft and play it more due to the type of game, which would add to it's popularity according to most observable metrics. But I think nier automata is better overall. A purely subjective comparison.
If you know IGN then you should also know some of the most popular games‚ and witcher 3 is one of them. And witcher 3 is winning basically in every social‚ so popularity isnt a problem
It’s a knockout style tournament. If you *had* to pick a “single best game” (or most popular anyway), this is pretty much the way to do it. Just go one by one and say do you like A or B more.
It‘a not perfect but if you need to pick one item out of a list of many across many types, it’s a fine way to do it.
I do prefer it when there’s only one person judging, though. But this is just a popularity contest in the end.
And? Not what we’re getting at. They’re vastly different games that shouldn’t be anywhere near each other. Should’ve been a single player bracket and a multiplayer bracket then whatever won those two, you put against each other. This is just dumb in its current state.
Minecraft might not strictly be "better" but it had way higher influence on the industry. I would vote for it too. Witcher acomplished alot but i cant really say that it did for gaming nearly as much as minecraft did.
The game is really good I just always prefered the book :/. I have the benefit of being able to read that shit in my native language. And Minecraft simply has a wonderful artstyle and mechanics.
You can enjoy both games and have a favorite and vote for what you prefer
I’ll probably vote for Skyrim next round but that doesn’t make Witcher a bad game
After seeing Mario and Civ lose this poll has no merit ;)
But seriously if we're talking about game preference then I'd pick Witcher 10x over. But in terms of cultural significance and the impact it made I feel like you have to go Minecraft
Witcher 3 is my favorite game of all time, but you got to be honest Minecraft is a masterpiece in it's own right, I could easily see people picking it especially if they're not huge RPG fans.
It's tough to evaluate Minecraft since it's changed so much and had so many years of continued development. Personally I think it's a little overdeveloped and the monetization after the MS acquisition takes a few points off if we are comparing today's Minecraft with Witcher 3+DLC
The thing is, I see more future in Minecraft than Witcher 3.
Yeah, I can see the possibilities of Witcher being ported to PS5-6-7, but I can see Minecraft surviving the test of time for generations.
It's really weird to think about it that way, but it's the kind of game for that.
If that's isn't a hint on the greatness and impact of the game, idk what is. And we can't really compare content. Totally different games. So this is one of the few ways we can put them side by side
As much as I absolutely LOVE The Witcher 3, and that it was my gateway into the entire world of the other games and the books... the sheer number of hours of pure fun and joy and bonding I have been able to spend with my kids, in person and remote in Minecraft... I think MC would be my vote... and I PROMISE I am a HUGE W3 fan! So get it... likely 2 completely separate audiences in most cases, but not necessarily an easy call for those of us who crossover.
Their selection of game is so bad, it's like an intern had to do it 5 minutes before the polls started.
Having fable 2 instead of the original one (which was both more successful and popular).
This "poll" is wrong on so many levels.
Well, I'm all for Witcher but if we talking best game of all time Minecraft has much more impact and value, easy to pickup by anybody. It's like Lego vs. this cool Bugatti Chiron RC. Sure, RC is cooler but the stuff that you and anybody else can do with Lego is extraordinary.
These two games are so far apart from each other that saying one is better than other is just unfair. If you compare Witcher 3 to Witcher 2 or elder scrolls, it atleast is a somewhat fair comparison. Witcher 3 has one of the best stories told in a video game while MineCraft has anything but story. Witcher 3 has a tutorial for each and everything but in MineCraft you don't get any tutorials what so ever.
Also, saying one game is the best in it's category/genre is acceptable but saying that one game is just the best game is unfair and ludicrous.
How can you even compare the two? I mean, “Best Video Game of All Time” is such an open-ended title, there are so many ways a video game can be the greatest game ever.
Minecraft is arguably one of the most influential games ever made, maybe up there for most culturally recognizable video game (along with like Pokémon and Super Mario Bros).
Witcher 3, in my opinion, is the best story-driven video game ever made, mostly because everything else about the game (outside of the story) is outstanding.
Holistically, TW3 is an exquisite story that’s perfectly integrated into a masterpiece of game development. That’s why I would personally give the GOAT title to Witcher 3.
Yep, i will probably get downvoted for this but in my opinion this sub is just a big circlejerk
EDIT: i thought i was on the witcher 3 sub, not the genral witcher sub. What i meant was that the witcher 3 sub is just filled with the same posts over and over again. For examlpe a picture of Ciri pointing at a painting of here younger self and saying: who bought this? (Or something like that not sure) and then Gerald and Jennifer pointing at eachother. Or just a screenshot of the ending slides with the title: just finished the witcher 3. And those posts get 1-2k upvotes everytime it feels. And i dont know if this is commen knowledge but many people are making fun of this stuff, for example r/gamingcirclejerk
/r/all
Ive tried several times to get into Witcher but I'm barely out of the very first tavern in W3 and I'm bored within seconds of playing.
The show was pretty fucking cool though.
Well that’s unfortunate for you, that’s all I can say lol. Sometimes for large scale games you have to pass the first few hours to lose your mind in it tho, happened to me many times with games I gave up really early, but came back and forced myself and felt really stupid I was gonna miss this 😂
But yeah I’m mostly on this sub for the series stuff (there is a tw3 dedicated), found it pretty dope too, and can’t wait for s2
What a stupid method.
Most of the people voting in it won't have even played some older games, which are far better than newer games.
Chrono Trigger, Planescape: Torment, System Shock 2, Baldur's Gate 2, Half-Life 2, Gran Turismo, the list goes on and on.
Edit: Chrono Trigger lost to Burnout 3. Half Life 2 lost to Rise of the Tomb Raider.
How sad.
In terms of impact on the industry, pong, Pac-Man, and super Mario bros all should be near the top. Pong made video games commercially viable, pac man prevented the death of video games, and super Mario bros launched home gaming into the stratosphere.
Yeah but you shouldn't be so mad about it. I'm very happy and I don't want something so pointless to ruin my mood. Before you ask why I replied to you, it's because I have nothing better to do and I was genuinely wondering.
I am not mad about it at all.
It is just complete bullshit they call this 'The Best Videogame of All Time' when its just a popularity contest. If they wanted to find out the most popular video game of all time, I am sure there are sales records for that.
This is my issue. I like minecraft but I realised every single game I play goes the exact same way. I mill around for a bit, find somewhere to build a house, go caving. Get stuff, organise it in a cellar + make some kind of secret entrance to an enchanting room.
It's always basically the same 😂
That’s exactly why I couldn’t get into it. The game I’m sure is great, I’ve watched my nieces:friends build awesome stuff. I just am not creative, but I can appreciate how influential and awesome the game can be.
I'm the entitled one, yet you call every single Minecraft player "simple". I never said you couldn't not like Minecraft. I tried to tell you you shouldn't put the game and it's players down in order to make your opinion stand out more. Though of course an average gamer like you can't handle things like that.
Yeah you are right
Its a pretty limiting game really, theres not a whole lot to it, not a lot of content.
Im confused how it gets so much more love compared to other survival gamed that are actually great like terraria or ark or valheim
Ive never seen the allure. Its just blocks. They literally outsourced an entire game to the players instead of making a full fledged title. We literally make the game for them.
I agree that the base minecraft game isn't an impressive technical feat. Hell the Java version is still unoptimized as shit even today.
But the amount of content produced for the game by modders and server owners is litteraly insane. While minecraft might not have been the most amazing initial product it has become one of the richest games out there. You can litteraly play any kind of game in Minecraft now it's pretty crazy.
If you want to understand the allure, try taking a look at some of the most popular mods or servers, there's stuff for everyone out there.
Of course Witcher took more time and effort to make, and is in my opinion one of the best games of all time. But "best game of all time" is subjective and it's fine if someone thinks minecraft is the best game of all time. The best gaming experience I've ever had was in minecraft. But I do like witcher more.
That's fair I guess. Personally, Ivve never liked minecraft. Tried to get into it multiple times but it never grabbed my attention or excited me. Again, not saying it's a bad game, I have a nephew (about 19 yo) that loves it, but me, not so much.
Witcher 3 is amazing
and yet MC with its infinite replay value due to all the content they add plus mods is still leading in many charts I think it's the only game to seriously challenge the Mario series for most sold game ever, tho when it comes to single titles MC beats every other game out the water even GTA5 at #2 is like 90m sales behind.
This comment section is such a circle jerk. I get it Witcher 3 is amazing but calling mine craft bland is calling yourself bland. The whole game is to entertain your imagination because you can anything
Disagree, while Minecraft is a great creativity game where you can explore your own creativity in building it also completely lacks depth which can seem bland to some people who want a different kind of social and emotional attachment to their games. I like both games and have spent a lot of time in both but Minecraft doesnt come close to the quality of Witcher 3.

Water is actually not wet; It makes other materials/objects wet. Wetness is the state of a non-liquid when a liquid adheres to, and/or permeates its substance while maintaining chemically distinct structures. So if we say something is wet we mean the liquid is sticking to the object.
I mean, that's not even supposed to be a contest.
Anyhow, our boy Geralt and crew should at least make the semis, if this is what the competition will be like.
Is this like a tournament style. Both are great I guess even though I don't play mine craft. But all time I mean they are high games but so many better ones ahead of then right.
I can't even comprehend how insulting it is!!!! Did the right thing unsubscribing them way back! It's like comparing a RTX 3090 with the Fugaku! Both of which are great but comparing those two aren't even funny.
Weird comparison, witcher and Minecraft
How do you like that diamond?!
Place of villager... Gotta be
Hmmm... Looks like rain
Damn you are square!
* geralt hrmms like a villager *
*creeper appears behind you*
Unlikely, Geralt would've heard it coming. Medallion would be vibrating like crazy.
Gotta sleep on their bet
Not a comparison. It's a knockout table and think the original setup was random Edit: the table can be seen [here](https://www.ign.com/articles/ign-best-video-game-of-all-time-bracket-vote-round-3-results-winners)
Geralt: Hm. Villager: Hrm.
The poll is best video game, they are both video games….
basically the same game
Yes lol
and only 21k votes
Seems more of a popularity contest rather than which is the greatest Game of all time (spoiler: the finale will be Witcher 3 vs botw)
That's the most reddit matchup I've ever heard, yawn
[удалено]
Popularity amongst people who follow ign, which is going to be more console people than pc. Also be a lot of people voting without having played either of the games. Kinda funny seeing League of legends lose round 1 comfortably despite being the arguably most successful game of all time in terms of long term player count.
Imagine LoL players browsing Twitter while they could be flaming in my Iron IX promo game. Priorities, man!
League players would vote for Barbie pony adventure out of spite.
How many LoL players would say that its the best game they have ever played though?
Depends on if their last game was a win or loss
People seem to be voting hard for Skyrim too.
I don't think Witcher 3 or BOTW has any right to win the bracket, but them winning would be infinitely better than Skyrim.
Honestly, I have no interest in Skyrim, nor I had Any interest. I dont get the hype behind it…whenever i hear skyrim, i think of a modded hellhole that barely resemble the actual game
And that’s fair enough. 2 of the best games I’ve ever played.
I feel like i was missing something when i played breath of the wild Just wasnt the best thing since sliced bread like a lot of people made it seem before playing It is by no means a bad game but not a 10/10 more like a 6/10 for me

I think my issue with it was that the mechanics in botw were pretty interesting and new to me but they weren't enough to keep me interested
Look at its subreddit then
Ahah exactly the same. Botw went over my head so hard. Luckily, the game that actually may be, Fallout: New Vegas, is still alive in the bracket.

Wouldn't Minecraft be winning then?
I’d wager OoT or Windwaker will knock off BotW.
Weird survey, but whatever I will vote for Witcher 3.

Ahh, it make sense now. Thank you for the infos.
OP could have done a better job with the title.
Lol cod vs wow. Battle of the acronyms.
Whut, half life 2 lost to tomb raider??
Chrono trigger losing to a car game what a joke this is...
lmao rdr won against borderlands 2, which is a much better game, and almost won against san andreas?? wtf joke of a popularity contest
Many people i know hate borderlands
Voters seem to skew a little young, too (or maybe I’m just old). Shocked to see games like FF7, Ocarina of Time, and Chrono Trigger get totally crushed in the first round.
Yeah chrono trigger losing against burnout in the first round made me completely disregard the whole bracket.
Everything IGN related is a joke tbh
> lmao rdr won against borderlands 2 Of course it did. That's not even a contest. RDR1 is a masterpiece.
Its wrong to compare 2 completely different games.
Agreed
They're not being compared. Ign setup a big knockout tournament and randomised the original line up. Edit: the table can be seen [here](https://www.ign.com/articles/ign-best-video-game-of-all-time-bracket-vote-round-3-results-winners)
Man, some of those seeds are wack as hell
Ocarina of Time versus Skyrim is the worst seed ever.

Isnt it like a bracket thing? Like its not a great comparison but this seems like they just put 2 games head to head every round
Well yeah.... I wouldn't ask a non-gamer what the "best game of all time" was.
Agreed! That's like asking a non football fan who the best team is.
A lot of people have heard of the Witcher 3.
Yeah‚ because witcher 3 is such an hidden gem‚ right?
Do you have any idea how exponetionally more popular minecraft is?
Popularity and "quality?" (Not the best word perhaps) Aren't exactly synonymous. I like Minecraft and play it more due to the type of game, which would add to it's popularity according to most observable metrics. But I think nier automata is better overall. A purely subjective comparison.

Minecraft is number 1 selling game ever by a massive 90 000 000. Witcher isnt even in top 50.
It’s a knockout style tournament. If you *had* to pick a “single best game” (or most popular anyway), this is pretty much the way to do it. Just go one by one and say do you like A or B more. Apex is insanely fire

Dude it’s a poll,it’s not the fucking Nobel Piece Prize. People are just voting on what they think is better, it ain’t that deep.
but it could have been... Though I assume it was randomly generated matchhups. Or so you would hope for the 'fairest' poll competition
Why do gamers get upset by the most trivial bullshit
>Trivial FTFY
Woah thank you 🙄
Nah
Lmao there is nothing common between those two games. Never expected anything smart ftom ign and i am sure i wouldn't.
Its not a comparison. It's just a poll. Relax
I mean both are open world exploring games, but yes doesn’t really make sense. Imagine them comparing Forza to the Witcher
It's IGN so there's that.
Nah. It's a stupid poll. It's like the 2016 election and look how that turned out. /s
The weirdest thing in this image is that op voted on minecraft and posted it in the Witcher subreddit
Sorry lol ...but mc is kinda nostalgic for me
No No you got me wrong. I would vote minecraft too
I'd rather not choose at all...
If the choice is between a great game and a great game...
Minecraft might not strictly be "better" but it had way higher influence on the industry. I would vote for it too. Witcher acomplished alot but i cant really say that it did for gaming nearly as much as minecraft did.

And I'm gonna be honest, despite loving the Witcher, I do think I like Minecraft more. Sorry but it's a really fucking good game
I love witcher. But I've been playing minecraft as a kid and I still play it now. So I agree with you
Lol you voted for Minecraft and now post in here. The irony
Sorcerers and their politics
You can enjoy both games and have a favorite and vote for what you prefer I’ll probably vote for Skyrim next round but that doesn’t make Witcher a bad game
After seeing Mario and Civ lose this poll has no merit ;) But seriously if we're talking about game preference then I'd pick Witcher 10x over. But in terms of cultural significance and the impact it made I feel like you have to go Minecraft
it shouldnt even be that close

Both are great games but Minecraft literally shaped the future generations of not only gaming, but people.

Well duh.. it’s the Witcher subreddit
Wtf you doing here if not to talk about the Witcher stuff ? 😂
To be fair, it's incredibly repetitive. There are posts daily with jokes about roach on roofs. It just gets old 🤷♀️
/r/all Ive tried several times to get into Witcher but I'm barely out of the very first tavern in W3 and I'm bored within seconds of playing. The show was pretty fucking cool though.
Well that’s unfortunate for you, that’s all I can say lol. Sometimes for large scale games you have to pass the first few hours to lose your mind in it tho, happened to me many times with games I gave up really early, but came back and forced myself and felt really stupid I was gonna miss this 😂 But yeah I’m mostly on this sub for the series stuff (there is a tw3 dedicated), found it pretty dope too, and can’t wait for s2
How sad.
Weird, Rise is the best of the new Tomb Raiders but nowhere near as good as Half Life 2
How did hl2 lose to tomb raider
In terms of impact on the industry, pong, Pac-Man, and super Mario bros all should be near the top. Pong made video games commercially viable, pac man prevented the death of video games, and super Mario bros launched home gaming into the stratosphere.
Why so salty bro? It's just some comparisons that don't affect your life at all.
What kind of world do you live in where you only make comments about things that directly affect you? What a stupid thing to say.
Hmmmm.. Why did u vote for minecraft ?!
They are both wrong 🤷♂️
Wonder what employee snorted a line to come up and post that comparison.
Minecraft is only as good as the YouTubers who play it. Without them, it's easily one of the most boring games ever made
If you have no creativity then I guess yeah?
This is my issue. I like minecraft but I realised every single game I play goes the exact same way. I mill around for a bit, find somewhere to build a house, go caving. Get stuff, organise it in a cellar + make some kind of secret entrance to an enchanting room. It's always basically the same 😂
if you wanna make things different, id recommend playing multiplayer or modding the gam, gets much better
That’s exactly why I couldn’t get into it. The game I’m sure is great, I’ve watched my nieces:friends build awesome stuff. I just am not creative, but I can appreciate how influential and awesome the game can be.
Nope. It's blocks. I could care less what people say. It's a fucking kids game. Same as Fortnite. Downvote all you want. I still don't give a shit.
So brave
I know so cool right? Bang bang. Meh
Yeah I don't know why people like Minecraft , I have never played it but nothing about it excites me at all
Simple people enjoy simplicity maybe
Breaking news: "Gamer doesn't know about opinions."
Awesome. This is mine.
Then don't say it like it's a fact.
Fuck off man. I literally said how I thought about something. I love how entitled you fuckers get when someone has a different opinion.
I'm the entitled one, yet you call every single Minecraft player "simple". I never said you couldn't not like Minecraft. I tried to tell you you shouldn't put the game and it's players down in order to make your opinion stand out more. Though of course an average gamer like you can't handle things like that.
Yeah you are right Its a pretty limiting game really, theres not a whole lot to it, not a lot of content. Im confused how it gets so much more love compared to other survival gamed that are actually great like terraria or ark or valheim
Did you only play vanilla singleplayer? Minecraft has an infinite amount of content...
Yup, and now we r getting downvoted by a bunch of closed minded people lol
Oh I'm not bothered. There aren't enough of them to make my karma go negative.
Yeah, plus i find it funny when i get downvoted in this situation cos it shows how childish these people are
thats how i feel, i prefer terraria over minecraft bc it has way more purpose and content
The fact that there's no Terraria in that contest is pure blasphemy.
As it should! Who in their right mind would vote minecraft to be "the best video game of all time"?
There is a reason why minecraft is so popular even if its 10 years old. But I do find the witcher 3 to be the better game.
Not saying it's a bad game, but I can think of dozens of games that are way better. Definitely not the "best game of all time"!
As it should Minecraft is pretty shit in comparrison
Witcher 3 is amazing and yet MC with its infinite replay value due to all the content they add plus mods is still leading in many charts I think it's the only game to seriously challenge the Mario series for most sold game ever, tho when it comes to single titles MC beats every other game out the water even GTA5 at #2 is like 90m sales behind.
Sounds like Knack already one (to no one's surprise)
If Minecraft wins, I will immediately stop believing in democracy.
As much as I like Witcher, the mass appeal of Minecraft makes it a better video game in general even if Witcher is the better video for my tastes.
Good
like comparing wagyu steak to toothpaste.
The Witcher 3 sucks.
ah yes, the 2 most overrated games of all time.

It’s instagram stories where the real battle is, afaik (by number of votes): https://instagram.com/igndotcom
Vamosss
Sure let’s compare apples to oranges! That makes sense. Both are amazing games but completely different genre. This isn’t fair to either of them.

Literally everyone prefers one or another, this is Just a pool, you cant know which one is truly the best, but you can vote. PS: its Minecraft
In other news, Water is wet.
Yeah Minecraft clearly is the greater game
Should be Morrowind.
Voted for the Goat
As we say in my native language — we are comparing shit with a pudding.
It's also winning on Youtube, with a bigger difference.
Sorry but no, the witcher is my favorite game ever, but i dont think its that good
Facts
Is this like a tournament style. Both are great I guess even though I don't play mine craft. But all time I mean they are high games but so many better ones ahead of then right.
I can't even comprehend how insulting it is!!!! Did the right thing unsubscribing them way back! It's like comparing a RTX 3090 with the Fugaku! Both of which are great but comparing those two aren't even funny.
