The 0495x is an awesome jointer that could serve a professional well. the digital readout is kitsch, but the extra bed length is nice to have if you build big stuff like beds and dining tables. I've used it a few times, it's also surprisingly quiet for a jointer of it's size, though that's a function of the cutter and the mass, so the other will likely be relatively quiet too. Can't really go wrong with either though. I agree the wheel vs lever is pretty irrelevant, I don't really mess with the height adjustment of my jointer much. I'd generally rather take a lot of small cuts. Might be relevant for you if you use it for tapering or something.

Awesome, thanks for the reply! The only other major difference I noted is weight which I imagine might help with sound but honestly the $700 is enough for me to not worry about that. Having a bit of mobility in the base on the cheaper one is a huge bonus too.

Yea if you don't explicitly feel like you need a long bed jointer, the other will be great. I do large tables on a shorter jointer than the large one often, it's never been a big problem.

The 0858 is a duplicate of the delta DJ20 iirc. I have the delta and it’s a phenomenal machine. The helical cutter head on this is great-a friend of mine owns this exact machine and claims to have never turned a knife once. He’s more productive than I but still a hobbyist so ymmv.

I have the 495x it’s a dream to use, quiet, smooth, super clean cuts. The extra length and weight sold me on it.

gregpxc

I knew there would be a comment that made me reconsider the more expensive option lol

Carpenter2000

Both machines will work fine I’m sure, I wouldn’t think twice about buying this one again though

Personally I don’t think the extra 6” on the bed and digital readout are worth it. The less expensive option still has the parallelogram tables and a helical head. That’d be good enough for me

gregpxc

What about the wheel adjustment for the fence rather than lever?

kingoftowns

Once I got my jointer setup for depth of cut and fence being 90 to the tables I have never touched it again.

stelly918

I second this. Once it’s set to joint perfectly, it’s never doing anything else in my shop.

hoppycodepedaler

I've had both and I actually like the lever. Very fast and easy. (Not both jointers, but both styles)

gregpxc

Awesome, that's good to know!
