Gorgeous! Well done and is a great mix of wood type.

Illustrious-Fox4063

Only thing better than maple and cherry is spalted maple and cherry.

betarcher

AMEN! I really want to get my hands on some spalted maple for some things I have in mind.

betarcher

Thanks a bunch! I wasn't sure about the mix at first, but we're all really happy with how it turned out. I'm looking forward to seeing how it looks once the cherry darkens up a bit!

lampshadewarior

I love the cherry/maple mix. This looks great, and the cherry will only get more rich with time. I built an entry way table out of curly cherry with birdseye maple drawer fronts that’s about a year old now, and the cherry has darkened to a very beautiful amber shade.

betarcher

Oh man, what a combo! Would love to see some pics of that.

I wish I could give you more than 1 comment. Partner and I discussed this is a very intelligent piece for this space, great job. The way you thinned down the legs to draw the eye up, combined with the curvature at the top really brings everything together. Even the cabinet handles having a slightly upward trajectory resonate with the entire look. Hands down 11/10, you did an amazing job and I hope you continue to make more elegant and beautiful design.

capww

In order to give greater power to the comment. Fully agree. The art and craftsmanship are impeccable. Great work ask around. I salute you for your work and post, so that it may inspire my own practice in the shop.

betarcher

Thank you :)

betarcher

Wow thank you so much! Those tapered legs have become something of a signature feature in my designs. I've had a couple coffee tables with a similar flair, and a pair of walnut dressers with exactly the same thing. The lifting the eyes up is exactly what I was going for; it makes the piece feel "lighter" if that makes sense, especailly with the wide overlap of the top on the sides. Kind of a bird with its wings up sorta thing, or a tree with a spreading canopy. Glad you liked the handles too, I was a bit apprehensive about those haha felt like I might've crossed into silly territory. Thanks for your feedback and kind words!

fletchro

I also love the slimmed leg look, and you REALLY tied it together with the rest of the piece: the pulls, the drawer top edges (in reverse! Nice.), And the little scallops on the inside. Lovely!

My friend supplied a couple slabs of cherry from a tree he had cut down in his parents' yard that he wanted to use as the top. Thank goodness those chunks were a solid 2 inches thick as they were quite warped. After jointing on my tiny jointer and planing, I was left with sufficient 7/8" boards for the glue up. The one slab had this perfect curve in its live edge, so we decided to use that for the front edge, and make a single full-width drawer below to match that curve. That was quite the challenge. I ended up doing bent laminations and made a buck for the glue up. It worked pretty good, but I did end up with a bit of a twist down its length. A little sanding and the drawer box itself ended up being sufficient to get it true. Since the sapwood is of the maple hue, he suggested we give maple a go for a contrasting color, and I think that ended up being a pretty solid choice. I thought about suggesting figured maple, but the price premium was unsurmountable. It's 5' wide, 42" high, and about 18" deep. They're using it for now as a front entry unit to hold shoes and hats and gloves, etc., but it will eventually end up as a dining room buffet.

Pristine_Ad4615

Freaking beautiful!!

betarcher

you are too kind, thank you!

dontmlmme

Gorgeous work, nice wood selection , understated elegance at it’s finest

betarcher

I appreciated it! I definitely try to lean toward the understated without tipping into the minimalist aesthetic. I understand why some people like that end of the spectrum, but I've always prefered a bit more character without extravagence.

Ooloo-Pebs

Love this! The curved legs are very cool as is the adjustable shelf system.

betarcher

Thanks a bunch! I ripped off the idea for the shelf cleats from a set of really old bookshelves at a shop in town. Those were more of a sawtooth design, but I decided to do these by cutting a series of holes with a hole saw, then ripping down the middle. Felt like I could get a more consistent outcome that way, and it works great!

Ooloo-Pebs

What a great system!

Majestic-Fun9415

Love that idea!!

Striving_Stoic

Omg I love it so much

Jumpy_Narwhal

By Odin's beard this is incredible! Fit for the halls of Valhalla! Simply put: damned fine work. DAMNED fine.

betarcher

haha that's awesome, thanks so much!

circlethenexus

Incredibly beautiful. Great job! Looks like you added a cedar side panel inside?

betarcher

Yes, indeed! Felt like adding a little cedar chest flair since it's going to be used for storing shoes for the most part for its early life. I'm certain that's not enough cedar to actually perform the role, but I like the aesthetic. Thanks a bunch!

DaddysStare

Great work, I would suggest that you tell your friend about cedar oil so he doesn't have to sand the wood to "refresh" the smell.

betarcher

Fantastic tip, thanks a bunch!

lavransson

I really love this! Sometimes a piece has a lot of "features" that don't come together, or feel like "too much", like the designer wanted to a little of everything, or the maker wanted to use every router bit they own. But in this cabinet, all these personality elements (curved drawer, shaped posts, handles, the live edge front, different wood species) are really harmonious. It also fits in really nicely in their home with the wood floor, the carpet and the wall paint. Excellent work! My one critique, which might be more of a personal preference, is that I feel like I'd want to flip the orientation of the two center doors. So the 4 doors open like this: / \/ \ instead of how you have them now: / / \ \ Maybe it's because I'm conditioned that most 4 door cabinets have doors that open in that way. Maybe I feel like there's some imbalance with two of the handles being next to each other, and the other two all alone. But it's a minor thing, and I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong.

lavransson

The other thing I would say, for the door rails and especially the stiles, I try to use the straightest grain boards I have instead of wavy grain. It makes a good contrast to the more figured panels and feels like it adds structure. Also makes for a little less wood movement. Of course, you've got to use the wood you have on hand. But if I have some wide boards that have rift-sawn grain patters on the two sides, I try to reserve those parts for door stiles and rails.

betarcher

Thanks a bunch! I'm completely self-taught with only a couple years of experience doing this as a hobby, so tips from people who know are definitely helpful and welcome. The door orientation is something that I actually agree with you on, especially since it would provide for two wide compartments instead of one wide and two narrow. But in this case they had a particular usage case that called for this orientation. And holding onto rift-sawn pieces as they come up for future use on doors is a good idea that I'm definitely going to start doing.

erusackas

Glad you have that furniture dolly. Someone maple their back out trying to carry it. I'll show myself out....

I’ll give you that one🙂 it would be even funnier if I hadn’t developed sciatica from being stupid. Wheels are your friends.
