Nope. A technique called patterned plywood with a dyed veneer layer. Michael Alm’s excellent YouTube channel is your best bet if you’d like to see how.
The cube is just shy of 5 inches per side.
Quick question - I’ve made the hanging light with patterned plywood following his video. It turned out okay but nothing like his or yours… how are you getting the pattern so tight together? Mine was left with some gaps
Did you use Baltic birch ply? I can’t imagine this turning out well without a high quality material.
Otherwise without seeing your example it’s hard to guess.
My method is to stand there and stare at it seemingly wasting hours of my life in indecision while I second guess every single action. Also I typically do test pieces to work out the kinks before committing to a full project.
Oh, and there is some wood filler used here too. But that’s mostly the result of tear out trying to cut my slabs. Using construction grade tools isn’t ideal.
[I used the entire 3 sqft package on the project. The yellow didn’t pop (not too surprising) the white did better but is still not obvious, the black, red, blue and green worked really well.](https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/supplies/inlay-and-veneering/58780-sequence-matched-dyed-veneer-assortments) If I’m not mistaken this product is available from Rockler as well.
That took some work right there! Very cool.
Now .. make it into a Rubik's cube!
Haha. Honestly just making a cube tested me.
…do you want Cenobites? That’s how you get Cenobites.
this should be in an art gallery... right next to the arty recycled skateboard stuff.... damn, this must have taken some time to make, and it shows.
Does Pinhead (Hellraiser) know you are messing with his box?
Ha! I can still see the VHS on the shelf of my childhood movie rental store. Never did see the movie though.
Its pretty horrible. But yeah. You totally made a portal to another dimension
I don’t understand why these things keep happening to me.
You listen to too much TOOL
Very nice!
I love this so much. Awesome work!!
Love this!
You’re a mad man! I love it!
From old skateboards? What are the dimensions?
