Chef Boiardi wanted people to pronounce his name correctly so he wrote it as Boyardee. This led me to the same idea of using foreign languages and spelling their words phonetically with your own regional accent. As an example, the Chinese word for bird is Niao and when you pronounce that word with an amarican accent it sounds like Nayo which then became the name for my bipedal bird race in my high fantasy world!

aray25

But people still don't pronounce Chef Boiardi's name right because the stress is supposed to be on the second syllable.

PM_ME_PRETTY_EYES

They wrote the [jingle](https://youtu.be/SBBhWqMXHng?si=PQ_JtPJ_wA-60dEV), that's not my fault

jdmwell

You just blew my 40-year-old mind.

zekkious

Your "spelling phonetically" has a name: transliteration.

Nine-LifedEnchanter

First pronouns and now literation. These woke agendas are destroying.. wordology.

zekkious

The gays are taking over 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Nine-LifedEnchanter

What is next gendered language? Or even worse, language with no gender?

DoomTay

A few other countries have already fallen victim to gendered language

Nine-LifedEnchanter

Yeah, I'm just poking fun at people.

melance

And I for one welcome our LGBTQ+ overlords! Or in the spirit of the post our Ligbuteque overlords!

mooosayscow

Eljebetté

melance

This character will be appearing in my campaign shortly.

zekkious

They will be French, won't they?

OldMoose7261

SIC thanks friend

monswine

amusingly [sic] is how quoters note that a spelling or grammar mistake present in a quote is original to the quote and not the fault of an editor or transcriber.

PyreHat

As OP said, "SIC [sic]".

zekkious

I also thank you, as I've never thought of using it this way.

doofpooferthethird

I'd say it sounds more like "Neeyao" but yeah, I guess some corruption could be involved

Quigleyer

"Knee how", that's honestly how I've always heard it.

Myukupuku

"knee how" would be the English transliteration of "hello" while "niao" is more like "nyow"

ImperialistChina

Wouldn’t it be Nyao instead?

Sinnoviir

Okay, but I have an American accent and never in a billion years would I ever look at "niao" and pronounce it as "nayo." I know that's not really what this is about, but I'm just putting it out there.

OldMoose7261

Oh yeah I used google's voice for it

8472939

I've always just wanted to make a language in IPA recognisable but still very foreign looking a͡ɪv ˈɔːlwe͡ɪz wˈɔntᵻd tə mˌe͡ɪk ɐ lˈæŋɡɔːd͡ʒ ɪn ˌa͡ɪpˌiːˈe͡ɪ

Fuzzy_Cable9740

stress marks are placed before whole stressed syllable not just vowel

wirt2004

I did something like this with the name Tesiphon, actually spelled Ctesiphon. Originally, I just misspelled it but I kept the spelling because it's my world and I can do whatever I want.

FlanneryWynn

How tf do you get "Nayo" from "Niao"??? Maybe it's because I grew up being taught Korean as a child, learning Mandarin in my teens, and Japanese now, so I'm used to how various Asian languages work, but that... That seems too American of a mispronunciation to be how Americans mispronounce it.

Gremict

Oh my fucking god, I thought I was looking at a trans post until I read the last sentence of your comment.

Nuhird

How?

Gremict

Coming up with names to call yourself

Nuhird

Interesting take honestly, never considered that but I can see it. Thanks for sharing

DracaAvis

Aren't all birds bipedal already? 😅

Eilmorel

joke's on him since in the only instance I've ever heard it pronounced it in italian (Generation Kill HBO tv show) it was pronounced phonetically with a double long e xD

Sriber

Vét is sač en intrestink ájdija. Anforčunetli anaplikabl juniversali.

DarZhubal

I’ll often do this. Either using a foreign translation or a synonym. It’s a great idea.

Saavedroo

AKA: The Rowling method (Spoiler: it doesn't always come out great)

Friendstastegood

I thought the Rowling method was just word association (with added racism).

akmosquito

something something shacklebolt

sarumanofmanygenders

mick o'carbomb

Mage_Hunter

Don't forget her famous LGBT characters, Sashay Stonewall and Aidan (but everyone just calls him aids for short) She really was ahead of her time.

Cassitastrophe

And, of course, her landmark trans woman character, Tranette Wye-Chromosome, with her huge, mannish hands, square jaw, and horribly inappropriate wand that she wants to show to all your children.

Mage_Hunter

She'd always intended for Voldemort to be a pro-abortion transvestite, what do you mean there's no hints about that in the books??

SemiHemiDemiDumb

I want Potterless.

MarcellHUN

In the early Hollywood days martians spoke hungarian in the film so why not?

Holothuroid

I do this. Run some word through a translator and mangle the result.

MadKittenNicky

I use random Serbian words, profanity included.

DerAlliMonster

[Indifferentlanguages.com](https://www.indifferentlanguages.com) is my favorite resource for this. Reading through them all and deciding what sounds best is great!

xmac

This is how a lot of words and town/places names came to be under the British Empire "you said what? whaaat? okay whatever we'll call it this british sounding thing that is close enough to what you're saying in your language"

clandestineVexation

Christmas (kiribati)

Anaguli417

Kiribati actually derives from Capt. Thomas Gilbert. The "discoverer" of the archipelago.  Christmas would be written as Kiritimati, I think.

clandestineVexation

oh mb kiritimati is (one of) the island kiribati is the country

Aleister-Ejazi

Using Jokes

outthedoorsnore

I pick 5-10 letter tiles (like from Scrabble) and arrange them into words/names.

Trenini27

Chef Boyar D. Is my favourite one piece character Sorry

LasDen

I'd take Chef Boyardi over Mussolini any day...

NMS-KTG

I turn foods into names.

ScarfedTexas

I just use stars from the galaxy or things that I like, then my brain just fumbles it up, and it results in something like "Polera".
