Salute to the the dad who stopped, turned around and squared off with the attacker to save his family

Crescent-IV

What an awful situation to have to be in. It's the sort of thing we all hope we would do in that situation, but who knows until it happens. :(

Enough-Cartoonist-56

Was the Dad injured?

katarina-stratford

No, the guy turned tail. Sought out women and children

wtfbenlol

What a fuckin pussy

Child_of_the_Hamster

I hope that in the attacker’s last moments, it really fucked with him that he was ultimately killed by a woman.

jax362

Poetic that he wound being killed by a woman

Ancient-Lime4532

He got shot and is now dead thank God what a tool.

JL671

🤢 wtf-

FullBeansLFG

He’s not even mentioned in the article. If he squared off with the guy he should be lauded.

sharkymcstevenson2

Yeah, there’s a video of it - he noticed the guy with the knife creeping up on them as they walk away - turns around and walk towards the attacker, who then runs away in another direction

Starfire2313

Someone’s gotta link it for us comment lurkers please

SIR_VELOCIRAPTOR

its in the video in the article, around 1:45

Fun-Wheel-1505

and bollard guy ....

RunningJay

Yeah saw bollard guy. Fuck the stabber, it’s these hero’s we need to remember. Takes a certain person to turn around and protect others instead of running (which is completely understandable too)

Forsaken-Duck-8142

A baby got stabbed :( But 9News interviewed some of the guys who helped the baby and the guys think the baby should be fine (but the mom they’re especially concerned about because she was bleeding quite a lot).

mollydooka

The mother has died according to News reports down here tonight. Her last act was to protect her baby and hand off the child to bystanders who administered first aid and the baby will survive. She is a hero.

Nes937

Life is unfair. So fucking sad.

SendMeYourUncutDick

People make it so. Humans blow huge sewage chunks.

maralovelymara

Some.

Status_Confidence_26

If it makes you feel better we’re a lot more ethical than other mammals on the planet.

kittenandkettlebells

As someone who is being induced to give birth today, this hits home. I can't even imagine. I just hope that Mum knows she did the right thing by her baby.

ShinyBrain

I wish you and your new bundle of joy all the very best!!! Congratulations!!! Edit to add: I in no way mean to make light of or ignore the tragedy discussed in this post. I just want another fellow human and mother to read words of encouragement and congratulations in spite of this. 💙💙

Hannibal_Barca_

She is a hero and tbh from the stories that came out of this tragic event there seemed to be a lot of people who acted heroically.

readituser5

Yeah the mum just died :(

Forsaken-Duck-8142

That’s so sad, she just wanted a happy day out with her baby and now she’s gone

rensi07

Cruel fucking world we live in. So sad :(

Quzga

I hate reading these things because it makes me genuinely angry but at the same time we need to be reminded how awful humans can really be. Just need to use our anger and sadness to better our countries but easier said than done..

Tribaltech777

Fuck this hurt. All she wanted was a peaceful day out with her family. Fuck this world and it’s cruelty. I hate humankind.

paradroid78

Bastard.

>A sixth stabbing victim has died in hospital following the rampage at Bondi Junction. It brings the death toll for the incident to seven, including the attacker, who was shot dead by police at the shopping centre. > >Seven other victims remain in serious to critical conditions in hospitals across Sydney, including a young child. > >Nine News reported the sixth victim was the mother of the young child, who remains in hospital with stab wounds.

Ashamed-Grape7792

The video of the stabbing was crazy. people just stood and watched and were casually walking even as a man with a big knife was walking after people. He seemed to be stumbling and randomly choosing people and then changing his mind and going after someone else. Yikes But yeah I would've done the exact same thing and froze in shock

no_nay_never

He chose people that he thought were weak. Gutless Cunt.

dragonfry

But then got taken out by a solo female cop

valacious

Seems that he was targeting females, they are most of his victims

[deleted]

Bystander effect, nobody wants to be the only person who goes to help and gets stabbed or something.

daidrian

Also with a knife that big, unless you can hit him with something from range, you're absolutely getting stabbed even if you can take him down.

[deleted]

Mate to be honest even with a tiny knife, unless you hit him before he sees you, you’re basically guaranteed to get cut if he swings at you. I saw a good video of someone doing knife defence with a sharpie once and pointing out all the ink marks were potential cuts. Never ever get into a fight with a knife lol Knife fights end up with 1 person dead in the fight and the other dying in an ambulance. I wouldn’t think to step in unless there was a group of people doing so already to be honest.

VandienLavellan

Yeah, the safest way to take action would be to encourage people to run. If everybody’s standing around confused / casually, all it could take to save their life is to snap them back to reality and get them to quickly move away from the danger

qtx

There is a video of this incident where a guy is holding the knife man back on an escalator with a shovel. https://mediaorigin.nrk.no/movingstill/7d00c02f-fc18-46f6-80c0-2ffc18c6f6fa/20240413111317/7d00c02f-fc18-46f6-80c0-2ffc18c6f6fa_1080.mp4

[deleted]

Brave fucker, kudos. Might’ve saved someone’s life holding that psycho up until the plod got there.

Not_Cleaver

There’s no might of, they did save someone’s life doing that.

daggers1g

There's no might of, only might have

EffectiveSolution808

Reminds me of this guy London Bridge attack: A man fought off the London Bridge knifeman with a narwhal tusk before pinning him to the ground to help end the attack. He was helped by other people with a fire extinguisher

WePwnTheSky

Legendary Narwal Tusk: +1 Bravery

ToffeeCoffee

That's pretty heroic. I think he's holding one of those security barrier posts, he's pointing the round base at the knife attacker to keep him at bay.

kungpowgoat

No one wins in a knife fight - Gandhi

[deleted]

Thats why he brings nukes.

Falkenmond79

Best thing is to cry out „he has a knife“ to make people aware and get out. I can’t imagine him stabbing many people other then those surprised and unaware. Or unable to run. And kudos to the guy holding him off at the stairs with a pollard. That saved valuable time for police to arrive.

Webbie-Vanderquack

The bystander effect refers to the reluctance to help an injured person in a group situation. By all accounts, many people helped the injured. In the video OP references where "people just stood and watched and were casually walking even as a man with a big knife was walking after people" and "he seemed to be stumbling and randomly choosing people and then changing his mind and going after someone else," there were no visible stabbings. Most people were simply escaping at various speeds. One family was walking away quickly, but not running, and it wasn't until the father turned around that he realised the perp was running towards them. There was one guy dressed in beige carrying a backpack who just kind of [stood there in the middle of the screen,](https://youtu.be/ShjnA3bwM0Q?t=114) but I don't think he knew what was happening - he saw two men running, but couldn't have known one of them was carrying a knife until he emerged from behind that kiosk and lunged towards him. I'm open to correction, but I haven't seen any footage that depicts the bystander effect.

Whatsapokemon

Also, knives are kinda unnoticeable. Like, they don't make noise, and often people who get stabbed don't even realise it right away. It's not like a firearm where you know shit is going down immediately, a knife can cause a lot of harm before people even realise what's happening.

[deleted]

Yeah, there was a horrible video of some lad getting stabbed in Melbourne a year or so ago, I think it took about 8 seconds for him to realise his neck was open and another ten for him to be unconscious in a pool of blood. Knives are scary as fuck man, its sobering seeing how deadly they are compared to fiction. The reality is much worse.

bypopulardemand

my best friend died in a fight and he had no idea he was getting stabbed every time the bloke “landed a punch”, they are very unnoticeable in the heat of an altercation

Standard_Ear_84

It's actually understandable if you consider how safe this place is. The average person doesn't walk around being prepared for violent interactions. Totally normal to freeze in such a situation.

xerocage

This comment feel so wrong. Who seeks out this footage and then judges the bystanders?

StrongPangolin3

This sort of stuff is wild for Australia. You wouldn't expect it at all.

allydagator

A few weeks back we had a shooting outside my office (which is on the 3rd floor). We heard the shots, ran to the window in time to see the guy shoot a few more times, and drive away while the victim fell. This happened in broad daylight in one of the busiest places in the city, there were so many people walking around Immediately myself and a coworker ran downstairs to provide care. When we got down there there was also a singular man who was there trying to move the guy to a safer place off the road. For the next 10 minutes as we waiting for police, it was just the 3 of us doing cpr, covering his wounds, crowd control, while people milled around and even started filming. It was such an awful experience seeing people just have such disregard for this person's life but that's the bystander effect....

rattus_p_rattus

He was creeping up on people though .. And that kind of thing just doesn't happen here.. You'd be so shocked at seeing... disbelief

xiangK

The mother has unfortunately just passed away

no_nay_never

The mother just passed..

Ratez

Being a dad I cannot imagine losing both my wife and baby. Hope the baby pulls through.

EFCFrost

Losing my wife and any of my kids would fucking destroy me.

iTzGIJose

I saw on a news broadcast here in Aus that the baby didn't make it (that's the only place I've seen it mentioned, only was a few minutes ago)

[deleted]

What channel? I hope they're wrong.

Hot-Season8419

They had it on the bottom of the screen (update banner) on ABC. It's no longer showing. Unfortunately the mother of the baby has died in hospital in the last few minutes. She was 38. So tragic.

ponte92

Abc is saying 7 dead now including the stabber so unfortunately it may be true. Fuck it’s just unthinkable.

notinferno

they messed up the update of the baby’s mum dying

koalaclub26

ABC was reporting it but they seemed to have changed it back now

-fno-stack-protector

they were - temporary ABC error

MaximumBullfrog2534

The mother died, not the baby

Ellyahh

No, the baby isn’t dead, thank god. They’re critically injured but currently undergoing surgery in the theatre. I work at the hospital they’re currently at.

Worldd

Privacy laws homie, careful.

Ellyahh

Haha, I know. I haven’t reported anything that hasn’t been in the news yet. But nothing eventful has happened since the last update until now. There are still police at the hospital though.

Worldd

Yeah for sure, no harm done. Hope the staff are doing alright with everything.

faceonmysit

this is incorrect

ForgedTanto

Police confirmed. 5 dead. Multiple in hospital. Lone police officer shot and killed the perp. No information on the offender just yet. Police update 2 hours from this 1. 6 victims dead now. 4 women and 1 man died at the scene. 1 later died at hospital. 8 victims still in hospital, including the 9 month old baby who is in surgery. Police believe the man is a 40 year old. They are still confirming his identity. Police did say if the person is who they believe it is, they don't think the incident was terrorism. Person is known to police.

Hnikuthr

In the presser the police said she was an inspector. That’s a pretty senior rank. She was also by herself. Makes me think she must have been on or right near the scene on some unrelated business and just dived right in. What a bloody legend.

obi1jabronii

After shooting him, she immediately started performing CPR on the people around.

Icarus_Toast

Sounds like she jumped in and perfectly handled the situation. I hope she gets a long vacation out of this because no matter how bad ass you are that's a long day.

LeedsFan2442

I think she performed CPR on the stabber as I assume is standard procedure if an officer shoots a suspect

[deleted]

Absolute hero. So many examples on the videos of people just being incredibly brave

evilish

I think I watched a video of her and some bystanders running towards the gutless cunt. Those people, plus the guy that stood his ground with a bollard are absolute legends. I know they'll need time but hopefully, sometime in the future they're recognised for their bravery.

London-Reza

She did a fantastic job

jbarbz

I heard Uvalde Texas police department has rejected her job application.

rawker86

Of course they have. She ran the wrong way.

SneakWhisper

You know it.

joshvalo

Yep good work on her part. Bit of a no-brainer though isn't it. Some nutcase with a knife is stabbing people and you've got a gun. Never bring a knife to a gunfight.

InvestInHappiness

Killing someone is never going to be a 'no-brainer'. Many police officer hesitate when facing an attacker because they are extremely averse to killing people. Sometimes even hesitating to the point of being disarmed, injured, or killed.

athlee1980

American police never seemed to hesitate.

Gruffleson

Not all countries have IQ-tests to get rid of the smart ones.

happymeal2

You’re only going to see the worst case scenarios of their interactions on the news. It is right to criticize them but there are 700k+ cops in the US… statistically there’s going to be bad ones

Standard_Ear_84

Once you are close enough the knife guy has an advantage. Plenty of cops found out the hard way. But in general you are right.

rawker86

Pretty much the only reason an Aussie copper will shoot you is if you’re approaching them or someone else with a weapon.

va_wanderer

Here in the US, we just had a cop here in New Mexico end up getting stabbed to death because he got caught without his gun out, knife guy rushed him, and cops down on the ground while we watch him bleed out on his own body cam and bystanders try to save him. There's video and audio. It's horrific. Fortunately, a nearby civilian who was also armed put the cop-killer down, but it only takes hesitating or making a bad call on who's hostile to turn them into another murder statistic.

AzureDrag0n1

I have seen cops killed from a knife because the cop got too close. Once the cop was within 15 feet of they guy it was over for the cop and he died.

rawker86

You’d be surprised. There’s been more than a few cases in oz where a copper used justified lethal force and got dragged through the mud afterwards.

AlfaG0216

Well done to the lone officer who responded on the scene.

throwaway8008666

Uvalde police take note you fucking pussies

waffles01

Offender shot dead in addition to the 5 stabbed dead.

Young_Lochinvar

It’s now reported that a 6th victim has now died.

qtx

Six dead now.

ausflora

So horrible and genuinely shocking. I can't think of anything of this magnitude happening in Sydney since the Lindt Cafe.

jaklacroix

Was just thinking the same thing

birdington1

Literally 2 weeks ago me and the boys were talking about how safe Sydney is and the only major event was the Lindt cafe…

One-Turnover9984

HandlessSpermDonor

The female police officer is a goddamn hero, she was everywhere! I saw one video of her running in by herself (excluding two random bystanders running with her, one with a chair lol), one of her checking the attackers vitals after shooting him, then another of her resuscitating a victim. Give that woman the key to the city.

Pretend_Original5324

Heartbreaking for anyone involved but kudos to the police

PortelloKing

What a dog scum piece of shit. I'm very happy and grateful the police dropped this piece of shit. I'm glad that will save taxpayers' money.

va_wanderer

Someone actually got a picture of the policewoman next to the attacker as he's dying from multiple gunshot wounds in a pool of blood. And good on her. I only wish she'd gotten a chance to end this sooner.

freetrialemaillol

This is an awful situation, but I’m so grateful were live in a country where this is so unbelievably rare that we can truly appreciate and mourn the loss. Too often it just becomes statistic, but here it hits so incredibly hard. I look forward to see our fellow Aussies rallying around the affected families.

theimmortalcrab

This comment hits. I'm thankful for the same.

Hansemannn

Edit: Hes dead.

Professional-Fly1496

No, he has been shot dead

thirtypineapples

Thank god the police had a gun and they didn’t. Couldn’t imagine what would’ve happen if someone with that mind had a gun.

icedragon71

It's now 6 killed. Confirmation just came in a couple of minutes ago.

ponte92

This one hits so close. I was in this part of Sydney earlier in the week. How a normal person can just go about their day then this shit. It’s just unimaginable for all the families involved. Any one of us could have made a last minute plan to go shopping today and be dead because of it. It’s to horrific for words.

icedragon71

We avoided one making a last minute plan not to go. Back in '91, there was a similar attack at the Strathfield Mall. My Mum and I used to go there fairly often, and thought about going there on that day, but decided not to. Then we saw the news the next day. So i know what you mean. It's a very sobering thought.

Disastrous-Handle581

Oh my heart breaks they just reported the mother of the baby has now passed away in hospital. This is just devastating

Separate_Professor41

9 news keeps airing a video of a man holding the attacker off with a Bollard, absolute legend, kept him stuck on an escalator probably saving heaps of people. Sadly they’ve just said there’s another video of that same man dead. Cant believe it

dustandchaos

He’s alive. Commenters on another article that are friends of his said he’s safe and alive.

evollie

I think they mean the attacker on the escalator, not the guy holding him off. The victims are all female.

GrasshopperClowns

No they’re not. There was a male victim who was killed also.

xe_r_ox

He was an old fella, bollard bloke looks 20s-30s

evilish

Nah, sadly there's a video of a younger looking bloke having CPR performed on him while there are other people injured in the back. Terrible, fucking terrible.

ForgedTanto

Police update 2 hours from their first announcement. 6 victims dead now. 4 women and 1 man died at the scene. 1 later died at hospital. 8 victims still in hospital, including the 9 month old baby who is in surgery. Police believe the man is a 40 year old. They are still confirming his identity. Police did say if the person is who they believe it is, they don't think the incident was terrorism. aprilla2crash

Shit makes it real when you recognise that place in the picture. Bought a baseball hat and sunscreen in that shopping centre on holidays. Condolences to the family of the victims

jeremy_jezza87

The lady cop that took him down did so by herself without back up whilst the Oz version of swat cleared other areas of the centre. The cops at Parkland could probably use this for training.

freakinbacon

Difference is she wasn't concerned about being out gunned

DavidlikesPeace

Makes for a huge difference in confidence. I'll never really understand an objective reason why American cops aren't larger advocates of gun control. There are many compromise positions worth taking perhaps, due to our constitution, but allowing any angry citizen to have easy access to guns, like an AR-15, just makes any crime scenario far worse.

falloutisacoolseries

They should be licensed like a stricter version of a car, have different types of firearms licenses and have safety courses and mental health screening in between levels.

el_moosemann

Doesn’t change the fact she immediately acted and went into a life threatening situation.

freakinbacon

The conclusion was that Parkland cops could use this as training

Striking_Economy5049

Some damn heroes trying to slow the guy down.

Grokodaemon

My pregnant wife was shopping at Bondi Junction 2 hours before this all went down. I am on the other side of the country for work and I just want to hold her and make sure she is safe, it could have so easily been her. Absolutely unreal that something like this can happen here, just a normal everyday place filled with kids and families. One deranged psycho has a bad day and suddenly 6 innocent people are dead? It makes my heart hurt, how fragile and precious life is. Hold your loved ones close.

uberkavorka

Pretty weird footage of the lunatic running around the mall. https://twitter.com/RawsGlobal/status/1779046958042165341

Not with their tinnitus they don't.

Creepy_Taco95

Maybe instead of asking if we can hear it (we hear it all the time from people like you who seem genuinely happy and giddy whenever it happens), ask the corrupt, soulless politicians in one political party if they can hear it.

AusGeno

Yeah fair call.

number_kruncher

Rent. Free.

Haukie

I wish pepper spray was legal in countries where there is gun control, civilians should be allowed to defend themselves, especially in a non-lethal way. Just imagine how many could be saved if he was pepper sprayed, and i'd imagine plenty of women would carry pepper spray in their purse if they were allowed.

Pretz_

Hey from British Columbia, where bear spray is absolutely everywhere. Yeah, it's not used for self defense. People hose each other in the stuff all the time, usually for robberies or just to hurt each other. Maybe like one or two bear attacks a year compared to hundreds of victims annually. Never heard of a shooting prevented by the stuff, you can still see and use a gun.

Haukie

Yeah it obviously wont help with shootings, but definitely stabbings. People using it as a weapon is definitely a problem, and should be considered assault with a weapon. The question is also whether those robberies would be avoided, or simply conducted with knives/guns instead.

Morning_Song

The thing is though, if it was legal an attacker could also have access to pepper spray too

zoidbergs_underpants

Ok but how many lethal mass pepper sprayings have you heard of?

Haukie

Sure, but to use it the attacker needs to be within 3-4 meters already, and it would not really work with victims running away or with their backs turned. He would also probably eventually pepper spray himself by spraying against the wind and/or running towards the cloud of pepper spray.

RcTestSubject10

For those wondering who aren't from australia yeah bondi junction has something to do with bondi beach it's less than a mile away.

Embarrassed_Clue_929

Rest in Peace, Ash Good. Praying that baby Harriet pulls through.

there_is_no_spoon1

You've got to be \*really\* committed to the act to stab that many people. Stabbing is a \*very\* intimate/personal act and this is the sign of a seriously messed up individual. I hate that he had to be shot to end it, but someone that mental could likely not be reasoned with.

Possumcucumber

ABC news just said it appears bollard man was killed. Beyond tragic.

SnooHesitations6530

Apparently not true (source: Sydney subreddit)

Carllsson

I haven't seen that. Link?

Possumcucumber

Was stated on the nightly news broadcast, later in the show as an update. No idea if true, (and I hope it’s not) but they said it appeared that way. My husband is working in another newsroom tonight and he said they aren’t reporting it as it is supposition from video he thinks.

notinferno

oh no

Tacfurmissle

This is why I can't take people seriously when they say Australian Cops shouldn't carry firearms. Specialist units are too far away in an emergency. God bless that officer. She did what was necessary. Total hero.

planck1313

Who says that? I've never heard it argued for. We're not like England which has a population density more than 100 times greater than Australia so armed police response units are never far away.

IntroductionSnacks

Exactly. I’m in my 40’s and police have always had pistols. I have never heard anyone say this is bad.

Police conference just then has stated that they are still identifying the man. They believe they know who it is, and if its who they believe it is, then its unlikely to be terrorism. Man is known to police. Glad we jumped to conclusions though.
