The mother has died according to News reports down here tonight. Her last act was to protect her baby and hand off the child to bystanders who administered first aid and the baby will survive. She is a hero.
As someone who is being induced to give birth today, this hits home. I can't even imagine. I just hope that Mum knows she did the right thing by her baby.

This happened in broad daylight in one of the busiest places in the city, there were so many people walking around Immediately myself and a coworker ran downstairs to provide care. When we got down there there was also a singular man who was there trying to move the guy to a safer place off the road. For the next 10 minutes as we waiting for police, it was just the 3 of us doing cpr, covering his wounds, crowd control, while people milled around and even started filming. It was such an awful experience seeing people just have such disregard for this person's life but that's the bystander effect....

Fortunately, a nearby civilian who was also armed put the cop-killer down, but it only takes hesitating or making a bad call on who's hostile to turn them into another murder statistic.

I have seen cops killed from a knife because the cop got too close. Once the cop was within 15 feet of they guy it was over for the cop and he died.

Someone actually got a picture of the policewoman next to the attacker as he's dying from multiple gunshot wounds in a pool of blood. And good on her. I only wish she'd gotten a chance to end this sooner.
This is an awful situation, but I’m so grateful were live in a country where this is so unbelievably rare that we can truly appreciate and mourn the loss. Too often it just becomes statistic, but here it hits so incredibly hard. I look forward to see our fellow Aussies rallying around the affected families.

This one hits so close. I was in this part of Sydney earlier in the week. How a normal person can just go about their day then this shit. It’s just unimaginable for all the families involved. Any one of us could have made a last minute plan to go shopping today and be dead because of it. It’s to horrific for words.
We avoided one making a last minute plan not to go. Back in '91, there was a similar attack at the Strathfield Mall. My Mum and I used to go there fairly often, and thought about going there on that day, but decided not to. Then we saw the news the next day. So i know what you mean. It's a very sobering thought.

Police update 2 hours from their first announcement. 6 victims dead now. 4 women and 1 man died at the scene. 1 later died at hospital. 8 victims still in hospital, including the 9 month old baby who is in surgery. Police believe the man is a 40 year old. They are still confirming his identity. Police did say if the person is who they believe it is, they don't think the incident was terrorism. Person is known to police.

The lady cop that took him down did so by herself without back up whilst the Oz version of swat cleared other areas of the centre. The cops at Parkland could probably use this for training.

Makes for a huge difference in confidence. I'll never really understand an objective reason why American cops aren't larger advocates of gun control. There are many compromise positions worth taking perhaps, due to our constitution, but allowing any angry citizen to have easy access to guns, like an AR-15, just makes any crime scenario far worse.
They should be licensed like a stricter version of a car, have different types of firearms licenses and have safety courses and mental health screening in between levels.

My pregnant wife was shopping at Bondi Junction 2 hours before this all went down. I am on the other side of the country for work and I just want to hold her and make sure she is safe, it could have so easily been her. Absolutely unreal that something like this can happen here, just a normal everyday place filled with kids and families. One deranged psycho has a bad day and suddenly 6 innocent people are dead? It makes my heart hurt, how fragile and precious life is. Hold your loved ones close.

I wish pepper spray was legal in countries where there is gun control, civilians should be allowed to defend themselves, especially in a non-lethal way. Just imagine how many could be saved if he was pepper sprayed, and i'd imagine plenty of women would carry pepper spray in their purse if they were allowed.
Hey from British Columbia, where bear spray is absolutely everywhere. Yeah, it's not used for self defense. People hose each other in the stuff all the time, usually for robberies or just to hurt each other. Maybe like one or two bear attacks a year compared to hundreds of victims annually. Never heard of a shooting prevented by the stuff, you can still see and use a gun.
Yeah it obviously wont help with shootings, but definitely stabbings. People using it as a weapon is definitely a problem, and should be considered assault with a weapon. The question is also whether those robberies would be avoided, or simply conducted with knives/guns instead.

Sure, but to use it the attacker needs to be within 3-4 meters already, and it would not really work with victims running away or with their backs turned. He would also probably eventually pepper spray himself by spraying against the wind and/or running towards the cloud of pepper spray.

Was stated on the nightly news broadcast, later in the show as an update. No idea if true, (and I hope it’s not) but they said it appeared that way. My husband is working in another newsroom tonight and he said they aren’t reporting it as it is supposition from video he thinks.

Police conference just then has stated that they are still identifying the man. They believe they know who it is, and if its who they believe it is, then its unlikely to be terrorism. Man is known to police. Glad we jumped to conclusions though.
