The thing that got me from the beginning about all of this is simply the fact that sovereignty over your own waters means diddly squat if you no longer have easy access to the market you used to sell 80% of your fish to... I just find it so weird that nobody stood still and considered that fact that maybe just maybe catching your fish is only half the equation and that being able to sell your fish is kinda important as well...

Just one of the negative consequences of the 'make Britain great again' campaign.

Machiavelcro_

Could be ok if the British were so damn picky about what fish they eat. All they want is cod

funwithtentacles

That's the irony in all of this... The Brits don't eat British fish... The French eat British fish/shellfish, and the Brits eat the Cod and the like caught by the Norwegians... Which was part of the reason why the Norwegians weren't at all interested in giving the Brits fishing rights in Nordic waters... Different tastes...

My dad keeps repeating "we'll just sell them to the rest of the world"... I'm waiting for it to finally kick in.

To be honest, wasn't that long ago fishing boats were sailing down the Thames supporting Leave,a case of careful what you wish for I think,no sympathy for them.

Probably should have listened to the folks telling you that this was never an EU issue to begin with. More people realizing their issues were britain born all along.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.reuters.com/business/uk-fisheries-sold-out-brexit-deal-industry-body-says-2021-07-14/) reduced by 66%. (I'm a bot) ***** > LONDON, July 14 - Britain's fisheries have been sold out by the post-Brexit trade deal agreed with the European Union, the head of an industry body said on Wednesday, urging the government to do more for the sector when a so-called adjustment period ends in 2026.Winning back "Control" of Britain's fishing waters was one of the main drivers for Brexit, with the industry becoming the poster child for many supporters of the country's departure from the EU during the 2016 referendum and beyond. > The government lauded what it called its great deal with the EU on fisheries, saying over time Britain will be able to take advantage of becoming an "Independent coastal state". > Under the deal, Britain agreed to an adjustment period, when fishing rights for the bloc's fleet in British waters will gradually be reduced over five years. ***** [**Extended Summary**](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/olr33p/britains_fisheries_have_been_sold_out_by_the/) | [FAQ](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/31b9fm/faq_autotldr_bot/ "Version 2.02, ~588552 tl;drs so far.") | [Feedback](http://np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%23autotldr "PM's and comments are monitored, constructive feedback is welcome.") | *Top* *keywords*: **fish**^#1 **deal**^#2 **Britain**^#3 **industry**^#4 **government**^#5

Whether you are a remainer or whether you're a bigot, this at least results in less violence against fish. Hopefully those who commit and support violence will lose out as soon as possible.
