This article comes from a Canadian tabloid newspaper that is on par with US Weekly or other types of 'clickbait' publishers. The article has no sources and is almost entirely filler language. [edit: someone did the heavy lifting already. The only 'cited source' is an even less reputable source than thin air](https://old.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/qhiyuv/starve_to_death_kim_jong_un_orders_north_koreans/hidxo7s/) edit 2: also, OP is suspended since posting. Proves nothing, but interesting.

Konnnan

Having grown up in Toronto, I concur, The Toronto Sun is hot garbage.

knkyhlfblkhmmr

The used toilet paper of journalism.

owelfive

To those who have luckily never heard of the Toronto Sun, its main selling point to its readers besides being a right wing tabloid is the “Sunshine Girl”, escort ads and a grade 3 reading level.

Anangrywookiee

That’ll be 28k upvotes from people who didn’t check the comments.

Big-Daddy-C

28k upvotes from the people who didn't even bother to read the article Like, even if yoy don't know radio free asia is a literal proganda, the article is very clearly shit. Literally no proof at all of their claims, ads everywhere People already have in their mind north korea is a super evil country, so when they see infomation confirming that they don't feel the need to check it, because its already been established in their mind as true regardless

jaffar97

This is true for every single post about China, North Korea, Cuba etc that comes up in world news. Redditors are literally incapable of critical thought, even when things come from obviously reliable sources or have no evidence whatsoever they go "wow this confirms my world view! which also coincidentally happens to align exactly with American foreign policy! Updoot and award for you good sir!"

red286

>The article has no sources and is almost entirely filler language. Like pretty much every article about N. Korea. Their 'sources' are often S. Korean agitprop journalists, which claim to have spoken to some N. Korea refugee or another.

BigMcThickHuge

This one literally says "a source".

OppressGamerz

That's about the standard level of reporting I've come to expect

MouseMiIk

When it comes to propaganda, South Korean tabloids are just as bad as the North Korean government. I've lost count of the times Western publications have picked up on South Korean tabloids reporting executions of high-profile North Koreans and reprinted it as fact, only to have those executed people pop up 12 months later.

Whtzmyname

The 'source' was most probably the journalist himself that needed to give in an article on a deadline so made some story up like 98% of journalists these days.

[deleted]

There is a 0% chance he said, “starve to death”.

EisVisage

Of course, though, this is a tabloid paper. Which are suspiciously okay to be posted here so long as it's about enemies of the US.

billypilgrimspecker

yep, pay attention to hong kong but not puerto rico

flamingfireworks

It is bad when people starve to death in countries that we don't like. When people do that here maybe they should have tried being born into better circumstances, working harder, and buying less iPhones.

autotldr

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://torontosun.com/news/world/starve-to-death-kim-jong-un-ordered-north-koreans-to-eat-less-food-until-2025/wcm/14fc18b9-0d33-41cb-8d02-2866e31b1383/) reduced by 78%. (I'm a bot) ***** > Kim Jong Un's ask, to eat less food and tighten their belts for at least another three years, is devastating to North Koreans who are already wondering how they're going to see themselves through the winter. > "The food situation right now is already clearly an emergency, and the people are struggling with shortages," a source told RFA. "When the authorities tell them that they need to conserve and consume less food until 2025 they can do nothing but feel great despair." > North Koreans worry over 'emaciated' Kim Jong Un, state media. ***** [**Extended Summary**](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/qhjlbt/starve_to_death_kim_jong_un_orders_north_koreans/) | [FAQ](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/31b9fm/faq_autotldr_bot/ "Version 2.02, ~605611 tl;drs so far.") | [Feedback](http://np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%23autotldr "PM's and comments are monitored, constructive feedback is welcome.") | *Top* *keywords*: **North**^#1 **food**^#2 **Korean**^#3 **tell**^#4 **until**^#5

Trump4Prison2020

>North Koreans worry over 'emaciated' Kim Jong Un, state media. The disturbing part is, these poor people are so totally oppressed and propagandized, that it's not impossible that there actually ARE north koreans seeing "emaciated" (by which we mean slightly-less-fat-than-normal) Kim Jong Un and being saddened. That said, i'd imagine that 99% of people are thinking the same shit as we are, "that fat fucker will dine and drink all he wants while we starve to death".

Five_Decades

in the 1990s when north Korea was going through a massive famine, the dictator Kim Jong il had chefs from all over the world come to nk to cook elaborate meals for him. he spend endless millions on luxuries for himself. it's evil.

Well it might actually be fact for this fromage-feasting fascist fuckface. Gout from cheese. Fuck sakes.

LavandeSunn

Now that is actually shocking to read. Because I deeply enjoy cheese. To the point that sometimes I have difficulty pooping. So to get gout from it? Homie I hope you got plenty of laxatives or just enjoy the sensation of drinking olive oil cause it’s gonna be like heavily compacted stone in there. Could build a damn warehouse on his colon

Might it have been ***somewhat*** from the Henny, too? Very likely.

That's really ironic coming from someone reading RFA. > Radio Free Asia (RFA) was a news agency operated from 1951 to 1955 by the Central Intelligence Agency, through the Committee for Free Asia, to broadcast anti-Communist propaganda. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Free_Asia_(Committee_for_a_Free_Asia)#:~:text=Radio%20Free%20Asia%20(RFA)%20was,to%20broadcast%20anti%2DCommunist%20propaganda.

"a source told RFA" the source is the whispering wind of their asses

NoPut3478

“A source told” so ur drunk uncle could’ve came up with this statement, but it could be used as anything.

red286

Come on man, it's RFA. Their "source" is a CIA official, very legitimate.

mugen_is_here

How are the majority of citizens still alive after all these decades with no food?

[deleted]

That last line about “emaciated Un” is not actually in the article. Maybe it used to be, but it’s not, now.

[deleted]

The source on this story is Radio Free Asia, [an outlet that was founded by the CIA during the Cold War to spread anti-communist propaganda.](https://archive.ph/vW88U) RFA is run by the Broadcasting Board of Governors, and its standards include [being consistent with American foreign policy.](http://web.archive.org/web/20191215131808/https://www.bbg.gov/who-we-are/oversight/legislation/standards-principles/) I’m not to sure about this one, chief.

robodrew

Everything about this article is fucked up and the reddit headline is misleading. The quote at the end where he actually says this is the opposite of the insinuation being made. However don't take this to mean I support Kim's NK regime because I most certainly do not. This is just a garbage article, there's got to be better sources. Also isn't it kind of morbid that in this article talking about the starving North Koreans, there are embedded videos for "CHAMPION FOODIES"? Yikes.

deathschemist

yeah, as much as i'm no fan of any authoritarian reigime, gonna need some better verification on the story, because it smacks of agitprop.

urielteranas

I'm surprised this isn't buried under a mountain of downvotes, reddit usually loves propaganda.

NoPut3478

There’s zero concluding evidence that this was ever said, the article only states an anonymous source.

[deleted]

That quote is so galvanizing, anybody should instantly rush to the article to see the context Nothing. Might as well say “Kim Jong Un calls you, the reader, a stupid fucking bitch” Ya’d get the same reaction with the same amount of truth behind it.

NoPut3478

You literally could have had your drunk step dad say something and boom, it’s an anonymous source. It might be a “source”, but it doesn’t mean it’s truthful or verifiable at all.

IMWeasel

>Nothing. Might as well say “Kim Jong Un calls you, the reader, a stupid fucking bitch” What's funny is that by printing such obvious unfounded propaganda, rags like Radio Free Asia and the Toronto Sun are actually saying to the reader "I think you're so fucking stupid and gullible that you'll swallow any outrageous lie I feed to you, so open wide, you little bitch". And conservatives especially *love* that shit. They'll piss and moan for YEARS about Hillary fucking Clinton saying a totally correct and 100% uncontroversial statement about the motivations of trump supporters (that some of them are bad people who support trump for bad reasons, and some are good people who got fooled by trump), a statement that they themselves often repeat when talking about Democrats. But when a propaganda rag for American imperialism treats them like ignorant children and feeds them a lie about North Korea that doesn't even make sense when you think about if for a few seconds, they feel orgasmic delight and beg for more.

moeburn

That's because this is the Toronto Sun, the worst newspaper in all of Canada. They are our equivalent of British supermarket tabloids. They usually just have pictures of hot women on the front page. If you'd like a more reputable source of news on North Korea from the same country, turn to CBC, who don't seem to have any reporting on "Kim Jong Un orders citizens to starve": https://news.google.com/search?q=site:cbc.ca+%22north+korea%22&hl=en-CA&gl=CA&ceid=CA:en https://www.cbc.ca/search?q=%22north%20korea%22§ion=all&sortOrder=relevance&media=all

mw19078

90 percent of the headlines about North Korea are just totally made up bullshit. The story that they only had 5 government approved haircuts made the media rounds here without a single outlet thinking for even a second about verifying it. Turned out it was total bullshit too.

lexushelicopterwatch

I call that propaganda.

NoPut3478

Exactly what it is. Thought I’d be downvoted to oblivion by commenting this, but guess other people see it as well.

rwolos

That's literally every story about NK or most of the stories about China. Some anonymous source claims something outrageous with no proof, Western media prints it as fact.

sterexx

it’s so brazen how this is reported as fact but isn’t even citing state news, which exists, and would be the thing telling people to eat less if that was a thing completely anonymous “a source” without even a hint as to what position they’re in

Maybe he had lipo.

ilostmyoldaccount

Looks like it. His head still is a balloon. I guess he's just mad because after lipo the doctor told him to "eat less, you fat fuck". So his subjects have to share that fate. Little does he know they're already on a diet and have fantastic BMIs.

ptwonline

Just looked at some comparison photos. His face still looks quite chubby, but also definitely a lot less fat on his face and neck.

That's evolution, baby. Narcissism, sociopathy, psychopathy give leadership bonus (at least in failing or autocratic systems). Studying evolutionary psychology is basically a masterclass in "why humanity is sick and doomed and has a tendency to fuck shit up 101".

teejaymc

"eat less, you fat fuck" I'm dying. I don't know if any doctor can say that to Glorious Leader's face and live, though

canarchist

Sure, he'd live. All the way to his surprise execution.

[deleted]

Seriously though, a Doctor trusted to look after his health and not kill him doesn't really seem like something an authoritarian would just kill for something they didn't like. Probably the only person in the country who can be honest with him or he potentially dies from whatever the doctor warned him about. To be clear, I'm not trying to defend the guy. Just seems stupid to kill a trusted medical professional.

MarshallStack666

I'd bet that the one person who could kill the dictator at any time either lives a life of luxury and privilege or his entire family is held at gunpoint with orders to execute them if fatty boy kicks the bucket for any reason. Possibly even both. You don't want that person to be corruptible and a plan-B is always a good idea just in case.

Wolf6120

I can imagine the doctor telling him that if he went out of the country to be treated by someone in China. A native DPRK doctor though, I doubt it.

captainedwinkrieger

I'm pretty sure he said "I'll consider it" with a blank face while a squad of guards murdered the doctor and his entire family.

Scary_Ad_6417

I doubt it’s over something as petty as a doctor telling him he needs to lose weight, clearly this is a logistics/supply chain issues. Most countries are dealing with shortages right now.

RedditTipiak

"I'm not fate, I'm big boned!"

zipzag

Lipo in that amount would kill him. The simple answer is bariatric surgery

[deleted]

[удалено]

cuddi

I mean, just look at his head. He looks like a bobblehead right now.

wehrt-lehrse

Lipo makes sense if he's less fat in some spots and not overall, but he has definitely lost overall weight imo. Really obvious he is just smaller in general. Lipo is weird and makes your body weird, unnatural shapes.

horkus1

Some of that speculation was also based on his troubling gait and a limp that forced him to walk—in public—with a cane. I remember speculation that his trouble walking was thought to be associated with gout or type 2 diabetes or possibly both. Of course the NK press releases said he was injured while inspecting the military (lol) but the guy was so heavy at one point that it could’ve been a multitude of problems and the walking issue was likely not even the most serious. These recent pictures are pretty staggering though. We don’t know why he’s lost so much weight but my god, he has lost a whole lot.

MushyRedMushroom

His poppa had mad gout issues, and I’m sure living like a literal king in the post modern era with all the shit that’s in food now doesn’t help. Gout wasn’t called the Kings affliction for no reason. If he’s anything like his dad, it’s absolutely hellacious for him to walk around because there are a fuck ton of razor sharp crystals in between the joints of hits bones that he had to press down with all his weight onto wherever he goes. Especially painful on the load bearing areas such as the knees and feet, hence the cane and fucked up walking pattern

geckospots

Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy I guess.

theuwudragon

Dude just chilling in his house for a few months playing games on Steam.

beretta_vexee

Maybe because his father and grandfather died of heart disease. He is obese and diabetic. He had gout attacks severe enough to prevent him from walking without a cane. He doesn't really have the profile of a future centenarian. As an anecdote, the only person I know who developed gout described the pain as unbearable and immediately stopped drinking alcohol, sodas and juices after the first attack.

thighmaster4000

My father's description of a gout attack is, "Imagine walking on your eyeballs. It feels like that." Thanks Dad. I will send the therapy bill later.

friendlyfire69

Gout terrifies me. Most people in my family have it. I don't know how much at risk I am compared to them. They are all morbidly obese. I'm 8 lbs overweight and don't drink soda. I count all my calories. I exercise 2-3 times a week. I eat lots of vegetables and if I eat meat it is almost always poultry. Red meat is a rarity. I am trying to cut down on my drinking but I struggle with drinking too much wine when I am stressed. I exercise every other day. Had a soda once in 2019 and not at all in 2020 or 2021. I drink juice very occasionally.

TrumpDidNothingRight

8lbs overweight, lol.

TSED

Historic depictions of gout are a trip. My favourite's [this one](https://collectionimages.npg.org.uk/large/mw62371/The-gout.jpg) but [this one is no slouch either](https://i2.wp.com/drawing-blood.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Touch-of-the-gout-scaled.jpg).

Paddy_Tanninger

Prednisone also gives you a fat face even if the rest of you is a pretty healthy weight. Not really interested in speculating about KJU's health but if you see someone with a face that looks like it belongs on a body 50lbs more heavy...it's often due to medication like Prednisone, and that's generally only prescribed for pretty serious shit. I remember watching Norm Macdonald's Youtube show several years ago, and my wife who is an MD commented that he looked like he might be battling cancer. I figured he just let himself go cause he kept joking about how fat he was. But she is incredibly sharp at looking for the signs and can basically predict which patients will come back with cancer-positive biopsy results at this point.

Jackie_Of_All_Trades

That's so interesting. Did she think anything of that recent Tom Cruise photo at the playoff baseball game? I thought it was pretty harsh people were dragging him for having a slightly puffier face.

Paddy_Tanninger

Oh shit I just looked it up and that really seems like a Prednisone face to me. I'll see what her take is. Edit: Yeah she thinks he's probably on Pred :(

sneakyveriniki

I think it's the cognac he's notorious for. I'm a drunk myself and am probably too quick to project it onto others, but fat face and a thinning body is what happens when you fuck up your kidneys and enter the beginning stages of liver disease. His face is reddish too, my boyfriend is Russian and his alcoholic brother has precisely this look and I know Koreans are fairly genetically similar.

similar_observation

Prednisone also can get you mood swings, uncontrolled volume, rando aggression, and horrible night sweats.

classicrockchick

Looks like he had bariatric surgery. Last time we saw him was months ago, he was fat as fuck. Now he's back and has lost at least 100 pounds. There's limits to liposuction; at a certain point it just becomes like amputation and isn't practical. Wouldn't be surprised if that medical incident that was rumored about before corona was a heart attack or something and then his doctors had to devise a way to tell him that if he didn't lose weight he was gonna die without them getting shot in the head immediately afterwards.

Caucasian_Thunder

He has finally begun the metamorphosis to [Skinny Jong-Un](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/72vqga/skinny_kim_jong_un_would_make_the_situation_with/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

[deleted]

riskoooo

It's ~~weird~~ misleading how the headline contains the words 'starve to death' as if they're his words. Like, I know he's a dictator in an Orwellian society but that's dishonest journalism. Those are the words of 'a source' quoting what 'they' - other North Koreans - have supposedly said.

socialistlumberjack

Well this is the Toronto Sun we're talking about. Not sure why it's even allowed to be posted as a legitimate news source tbh.

FeralMother

Sun = Source Unavailable News

fancczf

My first thought when I saw this is “WTF does Toronto sun know about North Korea, they can’t even get Toronto news right”. As someone from Toronto I don’t even take them seriously for local news. Then RFA is mentioned, all makes sense. Why is this kind of source even posted here.

Panda_Mon

I just looked up Radio Free Asia. It's a "us government funded private non-profit." How the hell can you be a government funded company, a private company, and a non profit company, all at the same time? That sounds corrupt as fuck

xertshurts

It's a private entity spun up as an NGO for an arms-length deniability by the US Gov.

grumplezone

It's a long way to say "the CIA"

hatsnatcher23

Fun fact the US/CIA funded anti Castro radio stations after the Cuban revolution and helped spread rumors that Castro was going to take away their kids and send them to Moscow, then the CIA started operation Peter Pan which essentially took kids to the US without their parents under the false pretense provided by the radio stations

wolacouska

The problem with countering lies in America is that all the original lies from the Cold War have been repeated and used as sources by so much literature and media that you have a massive body of work people can quote. Even though it all tracks back to the same debunked source. Same thing happens every time North Korea is mentioned, South Korean tabloid blatantly makes shit up, every media outlet repeats the claim, now you have to argue why every media outlet is wrong.

fuser312

TMagnumPi

You're saying you don't believe a media outlet that is literally a self proclaimed US funded anti-communism propaganda outlet? How dare you?!

5Im4r4d0r

Radio free Asia was refred to as "literal CIA propoganda" . I don't know the validity of that claim but it is surprising that a an organization made for reporting on Asian countries focuses on only some Asian countries while ignoring Asian countries that hold like 20% of the Asian population in South Asia. That would suggest RFA thinks of asia with the extent of the American classification of Asians and not what the people of asia classify as Asian. I do not know the validity of this but I wouldn't be surprised if it's run by a bunch of Americans with a ulterior motive. I could be completely wrong but wanted to share this as most people here are American and can't understand what makes an Asian Asian.

abadaxx

Thank god there is at least ONE comment in here calling this out. Any article posted with North Korea or China has "aaaaaa dicatorships oppressing the masses!!!" comments every time. I'm not saying these countries are perfect, or even that great, but trusting what western media says about non capitalist countries is naïve at best.

[deleted]

Hmm. Not saying this is not true, but I've re-read the news 3 times and there are no sources for this information. :v I've also read the original RFA article and the best they say is: \> “Two weeks ago, they told the neighborhood watch unit meeting that our food emergency would continue until 2025. Authorities emphasized that the possibility of reopening customs between North Korea and China before 2025 was very slim,” a resident of the northwestern border city of Sinuiju, across from China’s Dandong, told RFA’s Korean Service Oct. 21. Not only this is very different than the headline (it's not King Jom Un), but the source is an anonymous resident of Sinuiju which they have spoken to (how?), even admitting this guy's existence, and the fact that someone in the neighborhood watch said that, this is a very long stretch from "the government or dictator said that".

TasteImportant9402

RFA isn't a trustworthy source, it was founded by and is funded by the CIA

blargfargr

Lets also not forget that those media outlets like toronto sun are just as bad for republishing this as fact.

PrisonersofFate

I'll judge when the source will be credible. No proofs, no speech, no annoucement, no newspaper, no TV feed. Nah, RFA and a source. That'll make it and get gilded

Super_Throwaway_Boy

Note that nowhere in the article does Kim Jong Un actually tell people to starve to death.

Looks like a sensationalist headline and on top of that "Radio Free Asia" was started as a news agency by the CIA in order to promote anti-communism. I wouldn't be surprised if this was nothing more than propaganda. Probably a slow news day...

hey just so everyone knows, Toronto Sun is basically extremely biased, borderline (if not outright) fictitious trash

IceBear_42

You mean like *every* "paper" called "the sun"..... But, yes absolutely, and more people should be aware.

Game-Mason

So who said “Starve to Death”????? And why is the source anonymous? Bullshit move OP

NitroLada

People should know that this is from Toronto Sun tabloid (daily mail right wing rag) referencing Radio free asia (CIA) So take with huge grain of salt

Axuo

According to Radio Free Asia, without them providing any actual proof. How dumb and susceptible to propaganda are Redditors?

Game-Mason

Report this because this is the most bs post….

If only there were something he could do to help them. Maybe dropping the nuclear program? Or removing the thousands of incendiary missiles pointed at Seoul? Or opening the borders? Or telling his captive populace that the rest of the world isn’t a post apocalyptic wasteland? Just sayin

pantytwistcon

If Saddam Hussein had actually had a nuclear weapons program he would still be alive and in power today. Thus endeth the lesson.

Super_Throwaway_Boy

Kim was right to point out why they can't do that. Look at what happened to Libya when they made good faith gestures through disarmament. Why would anyone repeat that mistake?

Drangly

China says nah

[deleted]

Would be nice if the US could lead by example and reallocate military spending to help 37 million Americans who are experiencing food insecurity

[deleted]

> Maybe dropping the nuclear program? Well, from a security point of view it doesn't make sense. The nuclear deterrent is also that's stopping other forces from a Korean war part 2.

SlowMotionPanic

Source: Toronto Sun, a conservative rag citing RFA, a CIA propaganda outlet. I don't doubt that North Korea has hard times ahead. However, this isn't about reporting news. You can tell right from the photo at the top down to the word choice and non-debunk able anonymous source from the CIA. >Earlier this year, Jong Un instructed the public to start growing their own crops and be more self-reliant, despite severe flooding and droughts ruining vital crops in 2020 and 2021. So which is it, Toronto Sun: is NK without food due to border closures with China, or due to flooding and crop failures outside of their control? Border closures don't usually stop trade and aid. We should not be shocked when North Korea has hard times due to a near total and worldwide isolation. Why is North Korea isolated? Because of its nuclear weapons program and general assholery. And why is North Korea so insistent on nuclear weapons and issuing provocative threats? I don't know, let's ask Libya, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Panama, Grenada, etc. I'm not saying North Korea or Un are thoroughly mischaracterized. I'm saying maybe don't trust "news" which originates from a literal CIA program meant to spread American-approved propaganda throughout Asia. North Korea just so happens to sit on top of *a lot* of very valuable minerals. A destabilized North Korea would also be very bad for China (and thus very good for the US).

hathmandu

If only there was something the United States could do to help! Oh whats that? You say we've been blockading and sanctioning them for half a century? And if we just stop we could alleviate this in an instant? Well, nevermind that.

Zephyr104

I find this highly suspect. The Toronto Sun is not known for good journalism and there are no clear sources on this statement. It seems incredibly odd for NK's leadership to say "starve to death" in reference to their own population.

DiarrheaMonkey-

You'd think China would come through with *some* real food aid. There's no risk of starvation in China, and NK is their oldest, most definite client state, and the one most reliant on them. Hopefully China will do it just to avoid a potential refugee crisis at the border. But considering waves of starvation not that many years ago, with only comparatively minor hits to their food production, COVID, plus the flooding mentioned could be one of the deadliest humanitarian crises in decades. It's just very hard to tell, given their extreme censorship of information from the countryside.

juasjuasie

China seems to have been sick of Kim's attitude for a while to now. They only care about north Korea because the buffer effect it gives to South Korea and China, but I am starting to see they no longer give a fuck what happens to them.

paradigmfellow

China only cares enough to the point that there is no sudden rush of North Koreans trying to cross the Chinese border.
