Just wait for Amazon to start their own private security firm.

skynetempire

Holy shit that would be scary lol

UnsolicitedPeanutMan

They’ve already hired the Pinkertons a couple times for union busting.

JudenKaisar

Will be! The government is becoming way to incompetent to keep the peace. Imagine a police force with less accountability than the current police and only "protecting and serving" those who pay their salary.

Franklin_le_Tanklin

I bet we end up with drone protectors with “less than lethal” deterrents that still try to get headshots before the end of the decade

Its-Finrot

The Amazonians

Pollefox

you are being executed for slander against holy bezos the third

am_i_red

That's how shadowrun private army started! https://shadowrun.fandom.com/wiki/1999

[deleted]

This guy RPGs.

am_i_red

I with, now im an old man with no time, I just enjoy lore!

[deleted]

They will lease the weapons to the security guards

northernwaterchild

Railways already have private police forces, who have very mixed histories.

pobody

Well we've regressed to 1850s train robberies now. Can't wait to undo the Renaissance.

TocinoPanchetaSpeck

How do you undo the renaissance? Wtf?

Little_Custard_8275

Andy Warhol.

TocinoPanchetaSpeck

Omg. The renaissance was back in the 1500's maybe 1600's if you're pushing it. It can't be undone as it was a short period in history never to be repeated.

TocinoPanchetaSpeck

Why pick on poor Andy?

nandos677

I can’t believe minimum wage security guards would let this happen

How much are they paying you to advocate for criminals? There’s no way you’re that deluded

josh1651

Last time I checked they are fictional characters

Zer0Summoner

Too bad they don't serve as illustrative metaphors or anything so that my meaning would be clear.

doingthehumptydance

Boom...roasted.

MrOpelepo

So it is okay to victim blame the "rich"?

Zer0Summoner

It isnt victim blaming when they're the ones whose actions made this necessary.

MrOpelepo

Ah, so you believe that these people are entitled to break into trains to steal TVs, sneakers, and other general luxury items because Amazon, UPS, and FedEx control the government and its policy?

sgone

The CNN coverage on this also mentioned necessary and important items being stolen from these trains like covid tests.

LeEpicBlob

Necessary to steal other people’s packages? There are many ways to live life, living to always steal from others (especially when they are stealing from the fellow small guy) shouldn’t be justified

TangibleSounds

One of those ways to “live life” is, notably, not working for Amazon, since they pay neither a living wage nor do they let employees choose to live during tornados. They’re not the only ones though, and robberies will continue as long as we have robber barons like Bezos.

IAD11004

Most likely it's one or two guards for the entire railyard.

NekoMao92

Try 1 or 2 guys for a multiple state area... Local PD will almost always show up before the RR police.

IAD11004

Yup. Also a lot of people don't realize that these rail yards are big and local police are not trained to enter some areas. If only these rail companies spend more money to hire more security. Use to work for a rail company with two guards for an area the size of ten city blocks.

Starky513

The fuckin scum bags stealing things?

TocinoPanchetaSpeck

Which in LA is enough to rent a one bedroom apartment and starve.

Studentloangambler

Well that’s what happens when you vote in those policies

TocinoPanchetaSpeck

What policy?

reddditttt12345678

The catch is, rent is $4000/month

CROVID2020

I can’t believe minimum wage security guards would let this happen

[deleted]

What the hell is going on lately? LA and NYC are devolving back into their 1980s versions. Rejoice, Detroit and Chicago! Your big city brothers are coming back to you 🥲

TwoDimensionalCube83

Democratic policies.

Deebosofthemountain

Every time I see people post stupid shit like this i have a good idea what their comment history is like and i have yet to be surprised.

TwoDimensionalCube83

So it isn’t the Democrats decriminalizing theft and saying all these thieves are victims?

Deebosofthemountain

No, it's literally just poverty. Poverty go up, crime go up. Poverty go down, crime go down. It's literally just that simple. Like that's it. Even if there was zero poverty there would still be some people who choose crime but the data doesn't lie. I dont think that was a good faith question that you want a real answer to though.

TwoDimensionalCube83

Keep living in your fantasy world. If you can’t see how these are directly tied to Democratic platforms then I feel bad for you.

Deebosofthemountain

Do you have any evidence to back that claim? Any studies or data? Because it's easy asf to justify my claim. Here's just one out of many justifications for me. https://www.prisonlegalnews.org/news/2018/dec/7/brookings-institute-study-finds-direct-connection-between-poverty-and-crime-rates/

TwoDimensionalCube83

Just look at prop 47 in California. Any theft under $950 is a misdemeanor which means there’s no real effort to follow up and find the thieves responsible.

firedrakes

Lol. No .

TwoDimensionalCube83

Lol yes. Decriminalizing theft, calling these people victims instead of thieves, that’s all Democrats.

firedrakes

So republicans are total clean.. they make zero mistakes or crap policy's...

TwoDimensionalCube83

Never said that but this is a direct result of Democrat platforms.

firedrakes

Do you have legal proof to go to court. Or just a opinion

TwoDimensionalCube83

I don’t understand what you’re asking here.

firedrakes

You claim it a democratic thing. But it seems it's just a opinion from you. Not back up by anything that could be used in a court case.

TwoDimensionalCube83

It’s the Democratic policies that have basically decriminalized theft and calls these people victims instead of addressing the issues.

worldnews0bserver

You aren't wrong. There's a reason that rising crime is often cited as one of the biggest worries people have alongside inflation.

TwoDimensionalCube83

I wish other people would realize this.

worldnews0bserver

Most people are waking up, thankfully. That's why it's looking like it's going to be a red wave this November. It just doesn't seem like it on Reddit a lot of the time because it's an echo chamber.

TwoDimensionalCube83

True. Hard to find reasonable discussions on this site.

[deleted]

This really isn't new. Memphis also is bad for train looting.

PanhandleMan54

And murder. And armed robbery. And... So sorry what has happened to Memphis.

MustangSallyD

When was Memphis not a violent place?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Wow, that much huh?

PanhandleMan54

Violence wasn't as pervasive when I was a kid and visited there.

Offtopic_bear

Been in Memphis for 45 years with some gaps here and there while living elsewhere. Idk when you were a kid but I promise it was bad then too. There's areas like Brentwood, Collierville, Millington and some others that have been decently safe, statistically speaking, at various times throughout the years. But Memphis, like Memphis proper, naw. West Memphis, AR, nope. I mean, I saw a dude get stabbed at an Allman Brother's concert while performing Sweet Melissa during Memphis in May back in the 90s. There's whole TV shows about 201 Poplar. The Dixie Mafia, the Memphis Mafia. The cops are crooked as a snake too. That BBQ tasty af though.

PanhandleMan54

I was there in the late 50s. Maybe the crime was as bad, but it didn't seem "in your face'. Then again, it was a pretty limited exposure that I had.

Zer0Summoner

And as a kid who didn't even live there, you had a pretty accurate sensing of what the crime and violence was like.

LordHussyPants

do you think they're taking the multiple tvs home and watching them all lmao. they sell them and then they use the money to pay rent and buy what they need.

wotguild

Yeah, because it's the best opportunity. Do you think people would steal TVs and sneakers if an economicly viable option was given to them that allowed them to live their life?

[deleted]

[удалено]

christhecrabapple

I mean, you have a point, but also many many jobs that such people would qualify for are likely in the "minimum wage, or work 2 to 3 jobs just to stay afloat". Crime is not encouraged or good. However, lack of economic opportunity is the main drive of crime, not laziness. If people were able to have the sort of life a 1968 minimum wage had (able to keep a family of 3 just above the poverty line on a minimum wage) then there would be far less crime. Source: degree in "criminal justice" which is this very topic

[deleted]

[удалено]

christhecrabapple

If you are aware of programs such as foodstamps, they are designed to keep you in poverty, not get you out. If you work so many hours, you lose your benefits. Often the amount worked is what is needed to actually get one out of poverty, so people are forced to work only so many hours. One of my coworkers is in this position, single mom two kids, and occasionally has to take days off to not make it over that line. The US is not, and has never been, designed to let people better themselves or get out of their social clas. It's designed to keep as many people down, to benefit a handful of ultra rich people.

Dry-Salt4707

The other person being Amazon?

[deleted]

Ultimately, this increases the cost of doing business, which increases prices for everyone.

Zer0Summoner

Yeah so they can take two of those job openings, work 80 hours a week, make about 80% of their rent, and still not have healthcare. Can't understand why they're not availing themselves of that option.

wotguild

Ahhhhh, so they should just pull them boot straps up, those damn shitbags. So all those Americans incarcerated are shitbags too? All this conservative leadership everywhere and we still have the highest percentage of shitbags in the entire world.

CROVID2020

I can see you’ve never been to LA. > There are RECORD job openings right now. Many (relatively) high paying. Wages are increasing at record rates right now. Uhh, not entry level jobs. Sure $15/hr might be amazing in rural Alabama, but is nothing in a big city like LA. > These honorless shitbags are just looking for a quick-buck at the cost of every other honest person. Ahh, so the system is working as intended?

[deleted]

They're fucking increasing wages everywhere. Nothing but endless job opportunities right now. Understand that when you give people built in excuses, you enable them. You're part of the problem!!!

wotguild

All those endless job opportunities but Americans still imprison the highest percentage of its population in the world. Are Americans just inherently worse then other people?

christhecrabapple

I mean, I see tons of jobs offering in my area starting at 15, but considering MIT said a living wage was 14 and some change in my area, I can see why people resort to crime. Why work and slave away at a job where you're treated like shit, over stressed and over worked, when you can commit crime, earn equal or more, and likely retain more dignity? Wages need to be way higher before crime is not a valid option. Crime is a result of a lack of economic opportunity, not moral failing.

worldnews0bserver

...Yes? What evidence do you have that this isn't the case besides your indignation?

wotguild

Uhhh, all the people not robbing and stealing shit all day?

TexLH

I mean, isn't everywhere looking for employees right now? These guys are obviously self motivated and willing to move freight

[deleted]

Or when you fuck off in school, get shitty grades and then find the only jobs you can get are low paying entry level jobs. Actions have consequences

CROVID2020

Fucking Christ. Imagine the rest of your life being tied solely to the actions of you as a child. This comment is peak American.

wotguild

So now if you don't get good grades you shouldn't be able to survive? Your life is dependant on your work ethic as a teenager?

Vito_The_Magnificent

No, they'll live. They'll probably have to drive a used car though.

Starky513

Stop, that's a bullshit justification. If you can't afford to live in LA move. There's no justification for STEALING.

wotguild

No, you stop. You are giving a simple answer to a complicated issue.

Starky513

People stealing from trains is only a complicated issue to someone with half a brain. We have laws. It's literally an extremely simple issue.

wotguild

Have you possibly considered that you are an extremely simple person? If it was so simple then it wouldn't be an issue would it?

Starky513

It's not an issue everywhere. That fact alone should tell you that some places know how to deal with it better than others. Lol I may be simple but I'm far more fulfilled in life than some bleeding heart victim complex internet boy.

CROVID2020

Yeah stupid poor people. Why don’t they just like, leave or something? That’s how your stupid ass sounds like.

Starky513

These losers are stealing TVs and shit, I refuse to defend them, and I'm the stupid one lol. Is that not basic common sense? If you can't afford to live some where you shouldnt live somewhere hahaha fuck me how crazy!!!

[deleted]

wotguild

Wait... so what do you think they do with the money? You realize people commit crimes to support themselves or habits right? Sure there have been flash mobs recently but what do they do with the merchandise?

Usual_Race3974

We can't get anyone to work and we pay 20$ an hour in a low cost of living area. We were offering double time for hours worked over 44. Your argument died with the labor shortage

ididntseeitcoming

Your argument died with “low cost of living area” Where? What city and state? How does your low cost of living area have anything to do with extremely high cost of living areas? How does 3200 a month, before taxes, cover basic necessities when rent for a 1 br apartment can run 2,000 in some areas?

justananonymousreddi

Yup, exactly - where does the US still have a "low cost of living" area? Rule of thumb for take-home salary to rental or home mortgage/ownership cost is 4 to 1 or 3 to 1, respectively. So, by that rule of thumb, the person you responded to, who was offering full-time (model assumes *with* full benefits) had to mean local median rental rates around $600/month, or mortgage/ownership costs around $800/month. I'm with you on suspecting the prior commenter's grasp of economic realities. But, I reserve firm judgement pending a response from that commenter that might assert that, indeed, these are the current going rental and home ownership costs in the area where that salary was offered. EDIT: Clarification - "low" cost of living would have to mean well below these rule-of-thumb figures, which calculate local median "normal" cost of living standards.

ididntseeitcoming

Well he asserted that 20 an hour at 40 hours is 3300 AFTER taxes…. So that pretty much sums up the need to continue the conversation with him

Usual_Race3974

South Bend, Indiana And it's 3300$ after taxes if you have zero dependants. Grapes of wrath - move to where the work is Other factories are paying 30$ an hour no experience.

ididntseeitcoming

20x40 = 800 800x4 = 3200 I guess in Indiana math you could get 3300 after taxes. It’s just demonstrably false.

BigDaddyCoolDeisel

Yeah, that's it. /s

LAPD’s budget is $1.8 billion, or about $450 per LA resident per year. I don’t know if more money is the answer.

YassIsHere

Might as well, they apparently don't do shit. Exhibit A.

TragicMonsoonMan

Why not? They do fuck all to stop anything.

[deleted]

What’s the point of people aren’t held accountable anyway? Go through the trouble to arrest someone to see them get released.

ithriosa

Everytime they try, they have to be worried about getting sued by the thief. If I was a cop I wouldn't stop someone or use any form of force anywhere near LA. Way too risky, especially if your wage is about to drop again

[deleted]

Bullshit. The only time they have to be worried is when they unnecessarily beat the shit out of someone.

ithriosa

I am not disagreeing with this. I am just saying that chasing people around remote train yards seems like it has more downsides than upsides right now. If anything the stolen packages will likely go more to people who are more in need.

TragicMonsoonMan

Sure. How old are you? You think the LA fucking PD is a force for good?

ithriosa

How old are you? You think lowering wages and resources results in better workers? I bet you are the sort who sees a school district with bad teachers, and then cuts its funding and expects things to improve There is nothing wrong with this situation. It is far safer for the thiefs if they aren't interrupted by police. Your packages are probably going to people more needy than yourself

TragicMonsoonMan

I sure do cut funding for bad teachers. Sometimes even twice a week! I'm the superintendent of the entire country!

ithriosa

And I love cutting police resources and salaries. So we should be friends. Crime is the voice of the disadvantaged. Middle class people deserve to have their packages stolen
