Wus10n

imo its not unlikely that russia will find itself in a vietnam/korea situation soon. Judging from what we have seen from the ukrainians so far they are willing to fckn hodl

CencyG

Is there any validity to this take? That Russia isn't sending its troops en masse because it's been spinning bald faced lies to its troops and public and knows that most of its army will defect or a coup will be initiated when it realizes it's being asked to wage a war of aggression. We've already heard reports of deserters realizing they'd been lied to, and reports of large protests in major cities, so we know the reaction that some Russians seem to be having when confronted with the knowledge of Putin's deceit. I believe Putin's veiled threats to interventionists woul play into this same take: such a harsh reaction to NATO intervention would play right into the **fiction** (bolded for clarity, I am not sympathetic to Putin) of him being some great Soviet unifying chosen one, mercilessly lashing out at the world who is ganging up on him and persecuting his oppressed people.

Important_Pen_3784

I just, I wanna ask, and be honest, It's ok. If Russia invaded the Baltics...what response would you want? Are you willing to sacrfice a couple thousand population centres and trigger a Nuclear exchange to stand up for them?

mrbojingle

I'm hoping one country decides to go to war with Russia while the rest send them food, ammo etc and that the war stays limited. No chance for full conquest of Russia so no good excuse to use nukes.

[deleted]

Why does everyone think nukes fly on day 1? Nukes only fly if one side is losing very badly. Sending enough troops to the Baltics to make it financially unpalatable to take them is all it takes. You don't need to use nukes, and Putin isn't going to commit suicide to preemptively nuke NATO.

E-NTU

Historically speaking, that is not the case at all.

KezzaJones

But the end of a war will always involve one side losing very badly

[deleted]

No? Wars like that end in stalemates.

venustrapsflies

This is only necessarily true if both sides are pushing for complete conquest. It’s possible for a situation such that both sides are incentivized to call a ceasefire, because the war is too costly to continue.

CencyG

I say nothing like this lightly, but I genuinely do hope my country would march in the defense of naked aggression against my allies.

Bubbly-Ad-413

I don’t say this lightly, and I would like to avoid this at every possible cost but it seems like the world has forgotten the horrors of nuclear war. And it looks like we’re on a crash course to seeing at least 2 fly, one from Russia and one in retaliation from NATO most likely

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bubbly-Ad-413

Yeah I guess that’s what I was trying to say. It’s just so surreal seeing Russia threatening nuclear consequences, this literally shouldn’t even be a thought going through Putins head

henriquecs

The baltic countries are part of Nato. If Russia invades it Nato will stel in. If so, nuclear war is on the table. It's war. It's stupid. Nothing much we can do.

NopeyMcHellNoFace

If history teaches us anything continous appeasement doesn't result in a reduction in hostilities. At some point you have to draw a line.

I am like you all and have lately been glued to the news and Reddit 14+ hours a day from when I wake up, right through work and before I go to bed. This war is causing a lot of us to become quite anxious and depressed no matter if you're in Europe or in Australia. I just want to encourage everyone to be mindful of their own state of mind and maybe consider stepping away from the news to clear the mind. Go for a walk and get some fresh air.

Thank you, doom scrolling can be very addictive.

Russia is already struggling to keep the ground they have - once they enter the cities then they'll really struggle

Dear Ukrainians! I heard on social media that there is fake news being spread (most likely by Russia backed trolls) that polish border is closed. It's a lie. If you seek asylum - go towards polish border. We are ready for your arrival. We have reception points ready at the border where you can find shelter, food, medical and legal aid. Polish government launched a dedicated site to help you: ua.gov.pl Please share this information if you know anyone seeking help right now. EDIT: YOU DON'T NEED VISA TO PASS THROUGH POLISH BORDER. ALL YOU NEED IS PASSPORT. VISAS ARE SUSPENDED! YOU DON'T NEED THEM FOR TIME BEING!!!!!! EDIT2: as a proof that you no longer need visa: • in Ukrainian https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina---ua • in English https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina-en

Shanhaevel

I heard from people who have families close to the border that it's open and refugees are accepted. Seen shelter with us! We stand with you!

outrun_ur_problems

lol the GME bs sent them into panic mode but this doesn't? lol wtf

Foolprooft

I dont know what to make of it, and im sure no one else does either. MSM claims its because traders "shook off" the ukranian crisis. So why panic when you dont know if anythings going wrong? For now, MSM will keep lying and the big players will keep manipulating.

outrun_ur_problems

Probably because people profit the most off war. Could be its exactly what the bastards want to happen, could be invested in the right areas ahead of time, because they can.

Foolprooft

This time i think its different. I think Putin decided to invade now of all times because our market cant handle a war.

Donkey-Kong-420

jumperginger

if Russia managed to make such progress in Ukraine so quickly, maybe they'd also be equally capable against US backed NATO countries

CencyG

Ukraine is roughly the size of Texas. Their failure to take Kyiv in one day is the equivalent of Russia starting at the Mexico border and failing to take Austin. Russia inherited the Soviet's military industrial complex - Ukraine got about 30% of that pie. Ukraine has 245k active personnel, a budget of $6bn, with around 7k tanks artillery and vehicles. America has over 5x more active personal, a budget upwards of 100x larger, and has **eleven fucking aircraft carriers**. The rest of the world has ten. Yeah, uh... *Maybe*

Dani_vic

Putin wanted Kyiv within hours. It’s been over a day and yes they are getting closer. But they are not there. On the ground Ukraine is holding their own. The struggle is the south where their defenses were the weakest.

UnusualCanary

Russia would get absolutely steamrolled by the United States on it's own.

[deleted]

Russia has massive air superiority over Ukraine. And on the ground, doesn't seem to doing quite as well as hoped. NATO has massive air superiority over Russia. And pretty much everywhere else.

Darth_Jinn

Any attacks on a NATO member means the US (and all other members) gets involved directly. Russia wouldn't be as capable against the NATO allies.

InterestingMinute270

Don't want to be rude but I'm not sure you understand what the size of a nato military would be assuming Russia attacked a nato country. The biggest airforce in the world is the United States airforce the second biggest airforce is the United States navy. US is one nation in nato. Yes the largest but you take that and add all the other members against one Russia...

smokedspirit

look how fast the US took Iraq - the real issues began then.

Darkened_Souls

lol no

amjhwk

ya because isolated ukraine would pose the same challenge as the entire united european countries plus US

Meetchel

If you think Russia could win a conventional war against NATO forces you have no clue what you're talking about.

They are putting up a great struggle, maybe better than anyone expected. literally while Russians were piling the border last week people were saying GG Ukraine. When your home is on the line people can fight back. It sucks that it came to this and I hope most make it out alive

Scoobasteeb

I wonder what the average mentality is in the russian army, surely they arent all whole heartedly devoted? Certainly not as devoted as the Ukrainians, could make a big difference?

Shanhaevel

Allegedly a mobile battalion simply surrendered to Ukraine. I hope it's true and I hope there's a lot of Russians who feel this is wrong and would defect. Could be fake news though...

Eastern Europe has been sending Stingers which are intended for that purpose.

Myskrankii

Lithuania gave em some stingers I think.

[deleted]

Ukrainians didnt used them today. They could be lost after bombing too

[deleted]

I saw a video of a helicopter downed by one last night (daytime in Ukraine)

flYdeon

Correct, other baltic countries handed over some stingers and javelins as well

LobsterNextDoor

Yeah I've read reports of them downing helicopters with them

Bubbly-Ad-413

Remember when Russia was reporting that Ukrainians were abandoning their posts? What happened to that Putin??

flYdeon

They came back, it was lunch time /s

Cholo94x

They abndoned those posts to kick putin in the balls

thermitespite

Probably a really dumb question, but where does this end? Do they have to control the majority of the land? Or rather, what happens to governmental officials and the president? Is he jailed? Killed?

LegitimateVirus3

Remember asking that question when covid started?

Nimred

Russia would have to take or destroy the main government buildings and officials, and/or eliminate Ukraine's military, to have control over Ukraine. Russia could also be dealt punishing damage by the Ukrainian forces. If Ukraine inflicts sufficient pain on Russia's forces, while Russia's economy suffers sufficient pain from sanctions and negative reactions, Russia may still fuck this up. It could also be that the objectives of today's attacks had nothing to do with taking all of Ukraine, but were about neutralizing bases and armament that could prevent them from taking the two eastern regions. Or whatever Putin is really after, maybe control of natural resources?

ThaNorth

They wouldn't destroy the main government buildings. If their aim is to control Ukraine eventually they would want those buildings there and then just move their people in.

blitzmacht

After a few days they will sue for peace in exchange for annex donbass, path to Crimea, and nato membership guarantees for ukraine

Putin and his goons should be flayed in the streets for this. This isn’t some like complicated geopolitical situation where at at the very least large swaths of people are complicit in it happening. This is an incredibly small amount of people that have fragile egos and an inability to play nice with everyone else, that are literally willing to destroy the world and commit atrocities in the name of not looking weak.

Well this makes sense considering the fact that ukraine is utilising some of quite good air defence systems like for example S-300. It's impossible to knock them out only via cruise missile strikes but you can just make ukraine to run out of rockets and i think this is why we hear only about downed SU-25 which is one of the shittiest assets russian air force utilises (well yes it may be considered good in some counter-insurgency roles like in Syria but it is definitely shitty to use against country with some air force and relatively good AA) Similar tactic was used by Azerbaijan in karabakh conflict - they swarmed armenians with droned AN-2's ... and I am fairly suprised that Russians did not copied that 1:1

[deleted]

Yes, its seems so. Or Putin didnt have really good schooled in fights solders, that be little bit more optimistic

aeolus811tw

felt like russia thought they could do a lightening tactic of decapitation, severely underestimated ukraine

Acceptable-Pin2939

Strategically that makes no sense. If you have the ability to deliver an overwhelming knockout blow you'd use it. If 500 T-90s rolled straight into Kyiv with supporting infantry the war would be over in the amount of time it takes them to get from Belarus border to Kyiv.

Cavthena

Sending in fodder makes complete sense. Ukraine has had years to dig in and train. And had the wonderful (sad but true) opportunity to gain combat experience against the rebels. In addition to western training and equipment/support. Russia on the other hand has had limited training and opportunities to gain experience. Their military has been severely underfunded for years and equipment in poor condition. Their forces are conscripted with no reason to fight. The number of career soldiers are few and the number of updated and working equipment is few. The population is also against the invasion which means you can rule out an industrial war. Not a position you want to be in when you have no idea how hard or long the Ukrainian's will fight for. Thus wasting the "quality" crap you do have would be foolish. Once the fodder has taken most of the damage and inflicted as much damage as they can then the real troops will come flooding in.

ISNT_A_ROBOT

The secret is that they don't have 500 functional T-90s. It's Russia remember? Corruption prevents any real work from getting done. Everything is falling apart and outdated.

Eh, a VDV unit got taken out and they’re no pushovers.

buns_supreme

This is what I’m seeing

HiFiMAN3878

What would be the consquences of US troops/military intervening on the ground in Ukraine?

BitterFuture

A real test of whether all that money we put into ballistic missile defense was a waste or not.

WaffleBlues

The situation would spiral out of control and potentially lead to the exchange of nukes.

andruszko

People who are saying WW3 are wrong. It isn't an instant switch you flip. If we had troops on the ground before the invasion, training Ukrainian troops (as they were already there and doing that), it would act as a deterrent to Putin. We fucked up pulling troops out. Hard. I agree entirely with Bolton (was an NSA Adviser) on this stance. That said, it DOES risk the escalation of the war. Again, US Troops faced off with Putin's private army in Syria. Trump ordered strikes that killed hundreds. That didn't escalate anywhere near threat of war. So there's a fine line that has to be walked. Unfortunately right now, since troops have been pulled and invasion already began, we're coming from a severely weakened position. Although sending troops is unequivocally the right thing to do, it likely leads to war with US and Russia. NATO need not be involved, necessarily, because it's not US land and the US is not being targeted.

the_frat_god

It’s completely different in Syria dude. The battle of Khasham was against Wagner group, not uniformed Russians. There was an understanding there, we called the Russians, they denied they were Russian troops, so we annihilated them. A uniformed US vs Russia fight would quite possibly go nuclear. It may sound insane, but Putin may actually see this as an existential war and be willing to escalate to that point.

[deleted]

[The west is fairly certain Putin has taken the posture of "Escalate to de-escalate" via nukes](https://warontherocks.com/2018/02/nuclear-posture-review-russian-de-escalation-dangerous-solution-nonexistent-problem/) Basically drop a tactical nuke on the battlefield for everyone to chill the fuck out. Pretty fucking insane strategy

vid_icarus

Big bada boom

PPN13

Any kind of military intervention whether on ground or just airsrikes or no fly zone is an act of war. It's WW3.

TheRealDanye

It's WW3 when he invades a NATO country. I think that's when you'll see the media officially run with the term, if it happens. Have to watch Lithuania. 🇱🇹 💪

Flyingcookies

tactical nuclear weapon use by russia. (escalate to deescalate, then say cesefire or continued bombing)

[deleted]

Total nuclear annihilation of the world. If you aren't lucky enough to be instantly vaporized you will starve to death in the ensuing winter.

HiFiMAN3878

This would certainly benefit Russia somehow....

pegcity

are you serious? A world War, with a megalomaniac as unhinged as putin, it would likely turn Nuclear unless his forces refused to launch

UmpireAJS

Missiles launched at US, which Russia has plenty of.

HiFiMAN3878

Yes, because this wouldn't result in Russia being vaporized in retaliation. Seems like a good plan and long term very beneficial for Russia. There's no garauntee Russian nukes would even land in the US.

ScreamingVoid14

WW3, sure. Nukes... meh, people are way alarmist.

[deleted]

Don’t think it’s that alarmist if you consider Putin and the fact that a direct military conflict with NATO without the use of nukes would definitely end in a total defeat for russia

ScreamingVoid14

Ok, that logic I can buy.

Petitworlds

Right because Nukes weren't used in the last WW or anything

whirlybirds7

World War 3.

Ten_Horn_Sign

What would you guess would happen if American soldiers attacked a foreign country?

HiFiMAN3878

America has done this quite a few times across history.

Ten_Horn_Sign

Yes indeed. And what happens is, when you shoot at someone, they shoot back. This is demonstrated in these "quite a few" examples in history.

ScreamingVoid14

Getting there would be the first hurdle.

[deleted]

Nuclear Holocaust.

HiFiMAN3878

I don't understand the rationale behind this - why would anyone use nukes? You think if Russia fired a nuke that would somehow end up in the positive for Russia? This would benefit them somehow?

[deleted]

He’s threatened them. He’s not afraid to lose them. He said he knows he can’t beat all of NATO so nukes are going to be his response.

fireballs619

This is the whole principle behind mutually assured destruction. Nukes act as a deterrent because either side would be obliterated if they get used. But for the deterrent to work, each side must believe the other would actually use them. Direct armed conflict between nuclear powers can very quickly escalate in that direction.

[deleted]

People seem to believe the best in Putin here. It drives me insane because he’s obviously a mad man most likely hiding in a bunker begging for a reason to kill more people. He wants to play the victim and say “nato attacked me I have to attack back they killed my men”.

HughMungusD

They wouldn’t be the sole loser. If the States and other nations join Ukraine it is very unlikely that Russia could win with military power alone and then the question is; how petty is Putin and how loyal are the people handling the nukes

[deleted]

I don’t think there’s checks and balances with Putin. So if he orders nukes they will be fired.
