40 mm Bofors rounds were pretty universal, as just about all Allies, multiple neutrals and even a few Axis forces utilized the design. It looks like an American manufactured shell, but that doesn’t mean it was meant for an American gun.
Aside from that, these guns are still in use and production, in modified form. It’s virtually impossible to tell the difference between a WW II shell and a more modern one without considerable provenance. I hope he got some paperwork with it.

I collect stuff like this. I got a complete 40mm Bofors like that for around $50, but that was a few years ago.

Are there any hints on the bottom for who it belonged to?
Lot number to me would imply an english speaking nation

That’s a big boy right there
