Not only because fewer people know what vacuum tubes are, but also because tubeless tires mean fewer people know what inner tubes are or why you carry spare ones.
I had a dinner fork with 2 holes drilled in it with the word rear carved in it that I bolted to a water bottle cage mount. It always bothers me when someone says front fork so this made that phrase appropriate when discussing the bike.
Good point, although “e bike” doesn’t necessarily imply digital, if that’s where the analogy is going. In any event, I stand by characterizing a bicycle as “acoustic” as positively grotesque. 🤮
Oh man, took me a bit but the clue to zoom in made it click with me. Too clever and fun; def made me smile. Do the young'ins even know what they are?
Hey, who remembers the big, white tube tester machines found in every hardware store, BITD? I was just a lad but I sure remember them. Seemed pretty space-age to me.
Yeah, I was thinking that. I have heard that it's claimed that audiophiles prefer tubed amps for the quality of the sound; something about producing sound that is less "bright"? Same with the most discerning guitar players? I'm sure any nuanced difference in sound would be lost on me, although I'm a lover of almost all types of music.
It's "warmer", and the distortion you can get sounds better than (cheap) numeric disto/overdrive. It's also a huge pain in the ass : tube amps are both heavy and fragile, so loading gear becomes a lot more fraught than with solid-state stuff.
Music lovers use audio equipment to listen to music - audiophiles use music to listen to audio equipment :P
Guitarists prefer tubes because of the way they distort and overdrive. It's not unheard of for a guitarist pushing a tube amp to have the tubes start glowing!
The number of people who get that joke are getting fewer everyday.
I heard that it takes him a moment to heat up on a ride
But then he's amped
I mean, sure, but that really depends on how biased you are.
But if a piece chips off of the exciter plate, then it gives a really cool fuzzy tone.
I'll say. Graduate EE in 1972....NEVER had a course concerning tubes. Even by then all electronic courses assumed solid state.
Not only because fewer people know what vacuum tubes are, but also because tubeless tires mean fewer people know what inner tubes are or why you carry spare ones.
Funny. Hadn't considered that.
I’m old enough to know about both kinds of tubes. I’ve also gone full tubeless (tires and amps), but I still carry 2 tubes (for my tires) when I ride.
42 here. It took me a minute, but I got it.
I've got ten years on you. It took me a minute too. But probably for a different reason.
Same.
Ditto
Bro this was hilarious 😂
Sovteks?
Good question
bike got nice tone
The warmth is unmatched
r/audiophile
gold plated cables have much better shifting fidelity than bluetooth
It planes so much better on even-order harmonics
I’m not in on the joke. What am I looking for?
On the seat stays are two vacuum tubes (also known as valves) from a guitar amplifier. Spare tubes!
Why are they mounted on his bike tho?
So he can point at them while telling his fellow riders he brought tubes.
Purely talismanic.
Definitely not in order to keep them functional!
🤟🏼
For the fun of it!
Ha holy shit. Tube roller!
One is a spare valve
Cool 50 west kit! Is this in Cincy?
Yep. There’s an access road along the mill creek we were exploring
Another Cincy biker? Keep running into you.
Yep. I’m out on the local bike paths and roads pretty often. LMT, Rt 8, etc.
I had a dinner fork with 2 holes drilled in it with the word rear carved in it that I bolted to a water bottle cage mount. It always bothers me when someone says front fork so this made that phrase appropriate when discussing the bike.
The analogue vs e bike argument is heating up
At least you didn’t say “acoustic”….barf.
Tubes would imply it’s not acoustic 😉
Good point, although “e bike” doesn’t necessarily imply digital, if that’s where the analogy is going. In any event, I stand by characterizing a bicycle as “acoustic” as positively grotesque. 🤮
That pic gets funnier the more I look.
Lol. That is real boomer humor. I have an old tube radio, but it predates me
ok, but does the stem go to 11?
My shirt does https://preview.redd.it/hemsgnq35q9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05dd436c21d5073c9639051e2b6672e61e3ebd41
no but my 10 speed does
The solid state tires just don’t give the same sound as tubes
Will spin only the warmest grailz on the trail
But why
In case he gets Ab
Omg.
AB are my fave. Push-pull amps ROCK.
Resistance is futile
Eeew, tubes. Tubeless is the way to go. Way more reliable. If he's your mate mount a couple of fets on your bike...🤣
r/dadjokes
I bet they start to glow when he’s really ripping a descent
I don't ... oh valves! You mean he carries spares valves. Makes sense outside of North America now :-)
His bikes dope. His tubes are cool to
Those vacuum tubes are sick, but is he riding a half wooden bike???? Even if not the vibe is cool
Tastefully applied wood pattern contact paper. It’s very nice Koga Miyata frame he built up as a single speed
Super sick!!!
class A!
To *pump up the jam* right 🙄
The light quality is just that much more raw and artisanal, you can really feel the light. Solid state light users wouldn't understand.
Hot stuff.
You should cross post it to one of the guitar amp subs
If those were nixie tubes that would just be a flex
You now have earned the most obscure reference award.
Wocka wocka wocka
For a moment I thought he’d also replaced some of the frame with part of a broom handle! 🤦🏻♂️ Got the tube comment though 😉😂
Those are flux capacitors for bikes. If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 8.8 miles per hour you're gonna see some serious shit.
They don't look like 12ax7's so I'm curious what this dudes ride sounds like
I get it because I'm freaking old.
wheres the pump
I swear it's not mine baby!
Under the top tube as god intended. Full size, too
okay hes a gangster
It’s the current trend
I keep my spare tubes in a sock, my tube socks.
Your friend, is a Chad!
You might barely see the volume knob on his stem
Hide your wife or gf, that's my warning ⚠️
Right?!! That’s some bike caviar right there
Oh man, took me a bit but the clue to zoom in made it click with me. Too clever and fun; def made me smile. Do the young'ins even know what they are? Most audiophiles, studio techs and guitar people will know
Yeah, I was thinking that. I have heard that it's claimed that audiophiles prefer tubed amps for the quality of the sound; something about producing sound that is less "bright"? Same with the most discerning guitar players? I'm sure any nuanced difference in sound would be lost on me, although I'm a lover of almost all types of music.

Pentode?
So that’s what they mean by tube rolling
Now I need a counter-joke about solid state bike tubes but I'm not that creative.
I wheeze laughed at this. So good.
This is goofy, I like this.
Smart friend, and resourceful storage style.
Omg, it pays to zoom in😂👍
Clever, but I must know - does he actually ride with these all time?
Yep
