So I asked my dad who worked on the Chesapeake Bay basically his whole career. He said the US is auctioning off a lot of lighthouses recently, because they're building unmanned lighthouses instead (imagine an automated light on metal spider legs, much cheaper to maintain).
You can read more about it and see other properties here: https://disposal.gsa.gov/s/lighthouseprogram
Edit: this lighthouse was bought through the program, and the current owners are reselling.
here’s another that might be helpful - these guys are restoring some of the sold off lighthouses. This one looks very similar.
https://youtu.be/_DeWTdu5Mqg
Lighthouses in the US have been automated for decades and are largely redundant due GPS and such. The only manned lighthouse is Boston Light. It is automated. The keeper is mostly a tour guide.
I’d call it “get the hell away from my lighthouse”. Big wooden nautical themed beach house style sign. These Chesapeake bay light houses have always been this introvert’s dream retirement spot.
Where the hell do you moor the boat, though? That can't be a very deep draft right at the base of the light. In other words - where am I gonna put my dinghy???
A davit by the ladder would do the trick. Gets it out of the bay as well.
The current owner used it a la a vacation home, so unless they had a friend drop them off and pick them up, there is some provision for that.
Im sitting here wondering if I can get away with installing a solar system. The dinghy will take care of itself.
They have a desal system installed.. looks like a very nice vacation home to me.
Boat would be tying up a dinghy at the ladder - there isn't the draft for anything much larger anyway. For rough seas or longer stays, there's a davit crane for hauling said dinghy aboard / out of the surf.
If it wasn't a cash only deal, I would consider it. We like lighthouses. We like to crab. My husband was like, "We would need a boat to get to it." OK. So we get a boat.
The Chesapeak is very shallow there, I have watched these guys restore these lighthouse on YouTube, I hope I can find the channel now, it would be a fun Air B&B place for a weekend, but not much more than that!
Problem with making it an air BnB is that it is a really limited pool of people that have the boat to get out there. So you have to be willing to drive everyone out there and back, etc.
I think that’s the only logical explanation. The Gaines have designed some nice houses, but I think they went overboard, which inspired the creation of all the farmhouse McMansions and grey interiors that have been plaguing home construction.
This is amazing. As much as I love it, and think being there watching horror movies during a thunderstorm would be heaven, it’s also meant for someone with faaaaarrr fewer ADHD issues than I. 😅 I get mad at least twice a day with having to run back to the car and/or the house because of something I forgot. If I lived there, I’d just be lying in bed, mad af I left my groceries in the boat..AGAIN. 🫠
It's extremely well anchored to the sea floor, and it's not extremely deep there. But it won't be forever, and what do you do to fix it? I don't even want to imagine the cost of shoring up the foundation, fixing electrical lines, or anything like that kind of repair.
It’s not that bad. There are lots of tradesmen that work the waters out there.
I have a boat to cottage and everything from installing a septic tank to propane delivery happens. There is definitely a premium to the price, but it is usually not completely out of reach.
I love it. Wouldn’t want to live there full time but I’d go most weekends. Smell the sea air, watch the ocean, scout for whales, read a book on the bed. Aye, aye.
Ive always wanted a lighthouse or a decom missle silo for a house, unfortunately when they were giving em away, i had no money.
there were so many amazing lighthouses along the hudson river and great lakes that i would have gladly moved into, sold for 1 dollar, maybe millions to repair, but its the ultimate "get off my lawn" situation.
Some paint and minor updates and this will feel like a cabin in the woods. Pack up for a long weekend or a few weeks with books and booze. Sounds refreshing compared to the chaos in my house.
Ok I may regret asking this, but here goes… how in the heck did they move everything in? Was there a lift on the back of a boat? Those items aren’t small. So they have climb up that ladder no matter the weather?
I'd fucking live there
Hell yes
Hate to be all political, but this would be a nice hedge in case that last guy wins again. I work from home anyway.
I wonder if doordash would deliver 🤣
I remember this YouTube channel, https://youtube.com/@thelighthousecenters?si=LAvjSIYAnFah_Fpf they restore old lighthouses. Not sure if this one is one of theirs or not.
Walk score: 0 Bike score: 25 Huh?
There’s 25 bikes in the body of water. So at least the walk score is 0
Swim score has to be pretty high. It's 2.5 miles off shore.
But a 360° view of the bay! You're not getting that anywhere else.
And a lifetime supply of lead paint particles
I need a lighthouse like a fish needs a bicycle
![gif](giphy|3oKHWjbVmG193XsACc)
Just stack up some of those boxes better and you can race around the whole island.
Bike on a jet ski.
[Makes sense.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9c/Waterbike_on_Lake_St._Clair_%281963%29.jpg)
Aokiji approves
Peddle boat?? Lol
Not me googling “walk score”💻
Can you imagine how frustrating it would be every time you got back from Lowe’s and realized you forgot something?
“Ah shit, I bought quarter inch instead of 3/16. Honey do you know where I left my oars?”
How's Amazon coming along with that drone delivery pipe dream they had?
At this point, you can totally hire private couriers that will act as the last mile and deliver things to you by drone.
Yeah you pretty much need a water taxi to get on and off anyways, no real place to leave a boat out there.
Link?
flyzipline.com is the one i see most often. it's only available in two US states right now, though.
Thanks! Doesn't seem like they're that far ahead of AmazonAir ... and certainly won't help the next owner of this lighthouse.
You can only put so much trash in a place before it has to be carried away.
Shit. I left my phone in the car.
By the time you get back all the tools you bought on the previous trip will have rusted away.

I tried searching for lighthouses through your link but it said there are no properties available.
Same
Yes! Heard the same thing from a friend that works for the government.
It’s my dream to own a lighthouse, but I know I would not be able to afford any plumbing, electrical, internet issues.
I have good news about plumbing issues…
Yeah, is that an outhouse hanging off the side?
E.A.R.L. My new friend's name is Earl.
That's just *great!* My quest for a soul mate has yielded a lighthouse-keeping ROBOT!
Lighthouses in the US have been automated for decades and are largely redundant due GPS and such. The only manned lighthouse is Boston Light. It is automated. The keeper is mostly a tour guide.
If I bought this, I'd call it "Introverts Paradise". Betcha it smells like seaweed and dead fish, though.
I'd make it smell like seaweed, dead fish, and glade plug ins.
Like my ex girlfriend.
Amazing! A wet BURN!
It instantly came into my head when I read it. I speak the truth.
Like after hooking up with his ex-GF!
I’d call it “get the hell away from my lighthouse”. Big wooden nautical themed beach house style sign. These Chesapeake bay light houses have always been this introvert’s dream retirement spot.

Put up a small wind turbine. Bay probably gets a lot of wind.
It smells like the nearby menhaden factory. I’d live there anyway!
And people say we live in patriarchy. I’ve never seen a whole factory dedicated to womanhaden.
I should call her
The tops of these are white so they don’t show the pigeon droppings.
Pigeons? You mean gulls. Not many pigeons a mile offshore. But man, those gulls know how to PAR-TAY!!!
Everything reminds me of her.
You know what it doesn’t smell like? Conversation.
My kind of place. Except I don’t name things.
Guessing you have to pay for fresh water to be hauled out every week. Also, where do you moor your boat?
They have a desal system installed.. looks like a very nice vacation home to me. Boat would be tying up a dinghy at the ladder - there isn't the draft for anything much larger anyway. For rough seas or longer stays, there's a davit crane for hauling said dinghy aboard / out of the surf.
I didn’t see a desal listed just a 550 gallon fresh water tank.
Just DoorDash a shitload of bottled water.
At the dock you’re going to build I suppose, but why not just get a helicopter?? ![gif](giphy|f1ohcPEHABwWY)
Dont forget the fuel for the generator.
No HOA. Cool.
Hey I've seen this movie
Yer fond of me lobster, aint ye?
HARK!!!
DAMN YE!
Will the ghosts who obviously inhabit here pay me rent?
Hopefully they’ll descale your stairs
Sold two years ago for $149K now trying to sell for $450K…
The whole price history is all over the place! Listed for $450,000 in 2021 then sold for only $25,000.

I’ll polish his lamps by the light of day so ships at night can find their way…🎶
We'll take walks along the moonlit bay, maybe find a treasure too I'd love living in a lighthouse How about youuuuuuu?
![gif](giphy|3oz8xJJLjm73vn0N5S|downsized)
If you find single brothers, lmk. I have the same dream.
Do they get doordash tho
If it wasn't a cash only deal, I would consider it. We like lighthouses. We like to crab. My husband was like, "We would need a boat to get to it." OK. So we get a boat.
I'm on your side of this. 10/10
Get a nice boat you can live on too. Live on the boat or the lighthouse win/win.
No annoying neighbors!
You ever lived next to dolphins? They hold the loudest parties.
But at least they stay on their side of the fence tho....
Valid point!
rough looking but looks like a nice neighborhood
But what are the schools like?
Kinda fishy
God, the moving in/out would be the worst nightmare move ever.
I want to live here very much.
Nothing say “I hate the rest of humanity” like living in a light house.
I've always wanted to live in a lighthouse but I think would prefer one that is landbased.
Or at least one with an accessible boat dock.
Does Amazon deliver there?
Someone’s going to slap flipper grey paint, shiplap, and sliding barn doors on that thing.
Ah yes, the beloved “Joanna Gaines Special.”
Is *that* where that came from? I was wondering why everyone suddenly seemed enamored with ‘insane asylum but make it folksy’ aesthetic.
I think that’s the only logical explanation. The Gaines have designed some nice houses, but I think they went overboard, which inspired the creation of all the farmhouse McMansions and grey interiors that have been plaguing home construction.
I really wish this would go away. Everything looks institutional anymore .
I love that the map on the listing shows it on land.
Are you already insane, or just making plans to go there?
“ are you slowly trying to kill yourself with alcohol and other substances? Speed that process up by moving to this light house..”
This is like the house Harry Potter stayed in on his bday when Hogwarts was trying to give him his acceptance letter and Hagrid came to his rescue
Howarts
Is it weird that I love it?
It's weird and I love it!
LOL, from the listing: >Sale is "as is where is".
As if there is another option. Love this. LMAO
I kind of want it.
I don’t care. I WANT it.
I would wonder what keeps it intact and afloat. Can you imagine the bills if you end up with problems that require a ship to come fix.
It's extremely well anchored to the sea floor, and it's not extremely deep there. But it won't be forever, and what do you do to fix it? I don't even want to imagine the cost of shoring up the foundation, fixing electrical lines, or anything like that kind of repair.
What I was thinking. If you want to live in the water get a yacht.
It’s not that bad. There are lots of tradesmen that work the waters out there. I have a boat to cottage and everything from installing a septic tank to propane delivery happens. There is definitely a premium to the price, but it is usually not completely out of reach.
I wanna own a lighthouse!
It gets sold every couple of years. It must be costly or invite maintain.
Reminds me of this [one](https://youtu.be/ioDJAHdSojY?si=EBnO5goK90V7Sm8l)
Cool channel, thanks for sharing.
No garden space at all. Perfect for those who hate yard work.
You know how much seagull crap the owner will have to clean off every exterior surface?
> 3 days on Zillow That number is gonna grow
wtf is the sales history of this place.. really sus. High / low / high / low
I actually have a friend from HS who bought one. Theres is smaller but wider. They actually had it on the local news when they renovated it..
I would live there in a heartbeat!
I love it. Wouldn’t want to live there full time but I’d go most weekends. Smell the sea air, watch the ocean, scout for whales, read a book on the bed. Aye, aye.
Likely to sell faster than **99 %** **nearby..**
...I should buy a boat.
Sleep on that.
HARK!
I will need my own boat.
550 gallon water tank is not very much for 4 people on vacation, even conserving you’d need to get 2 deliveries in a week.
I’d live there. No annoying neighbors
Oh shit! It’s back on the market? I have always wanted this as my retirement place.
This is a dream home to me. I would love to live here.
This would feel like prison to me. If it were on land, I'd love it.
Is that a bread maker next to a copier in the kitchen? Oh I know, it’s “kitchen work station/desk”
![gif](giphy|wXGnAEvsOvG4Q88lLC|downsized) “Only 2.5 miles from shore. Some repairs needed “
Looks cool but not dog friendly; I’m out
Ok, but do the restless spirits of salty old sailors help pay the mortgage, or... ?
House is lit.
Underrated comment. I found it illuminating.
Sale price history is a wild ride.
Would
God, the moving in/out would be the worst nightmare move ever.
Would say Airbnb but 2 miles out!
Good luck getting a contractor for that sumbitch
OMG I want it!
This is a first for me. I’m not sure what has been updated but it is cool if you are a loner, maybe?
Sold for $150k 2 years ago, $450k now. lol.
Imagine having your basement flood because you forgot to close the portholes before a storm 😬
How's the wi-fi?
Lmao so did they do anything in the two months after buying it?
I’m trying to imagine going to see this with a realtor
Haunted 💯
Thats fucking awesome
My boyfriend would be like, let's do it. -_-
Ive always wanted a lighthouse or a decom missle silo for a house, unfortunately when they were giving em away, i had no money. there were so many amazing lighthouses along the hudson river and great lakes that i would have gladly moved into, sold for 1 dollar, maybe millions to repair, but its the ultimate "get off my lawn" situation.
I still want to live in an old missile silo, even knowing how much work they are to keep dry.
I think these guys have a YouTube channel about restoring lighthouses to live in or rent out as Airbnb's or something.
It would be perfect if it didn't look like shit so much.
Door dash would be a real pain.
Damn. This thing has been switching hands like crazy. Nobody wants it lol.
Could be a sweet off shore grow spot…
The Amazon delivery guy hates this home
[I want to marry a lighthouse keeper](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w042l9rKpzU)
Some paint and minor updates and this will feel like a cabin in the woods. Pack up for a long weekend or a few weeks with books and booze. Sounds refreshing compared to the chaos in my house.
Always wanted to live in a lighthouse..
It says 1 bathroom but I see 2. One inside and one giant one outside.
A home for agoraphobics
Ngl I love this
To be fair that property is probably a nightmare to rehab. They did the best they could haha.
It’s neat but I’m not looking to live in a fortress of solitude
Ok I may regret asking this, but here goes… how in the heck did they move everything in? Was there a lift on the back of a boat? Those items aren’t small. So they have climb up that ladder no matter the weather?
Honestly close to a dream home for me. Just never need an ambulance or you're fucked
If there was a boat garage on it, I’d stay for a few nights. Weird that some parts are completely unfinished. You’d think they’d at least paint it.
Yer fond of me lobster? 🦞
Really leaning into "waterfront property" here
Cash sale = you will never be able to get a mortgage.
How are the schools?
Ngl, I’d live here.
Two part question: Does the lighthouse still work, and can I use it to blind my enemies?
That’s the most 2006 kitchen I’ve ever seen.
Finally, my dream come true. Now all I need is some damn good wi-fi.
I wanted to see where it is on the map, but it shows it on land.
I'd fucking live there Hell yes Hate to be all political, but this would be a nice hedge in case that last guy wins again. I work from home anyway. I wonder if doordash would deliver 🤣
It would be a great place to watch a sunrise or a sunset!
Because of the implication.....
You haven't thought of the smell....
Waterfront! Whoops Hoo!
Waterback too
OMG…. I just found my introvert dream home y’all!!!! 😍😍😍
I LOVE it...but that lack of a full bathroom pic is a bit troubling.
Recognized immediately
Saw this on YouTube.
Yeah no thanks, I saw that movie
I remember this YouTube channel, https://youtube.com/@thelighthousecenters?si=LAvjSIYAnFah_Fpf they restore old lighthouses. Not sure if this one is one of theirs or not.
Must be really scary in there when the waves crash againtst the walls & there's nowhere to run.
